The Ghost Furnace - Episode 116 "Dr. PA - Lost Children of the Alleghenies" The week we do something a little different. Before Mike started the Ghost Furnace, Nic and I had a Pennsylvania centric history/folklore podcast that ran from late 2015 until sometime in 2023. It had a different style and format but many of the topics either informed or would expand into elements we talk about on this show. So we wanted to start sharing them with everyone when we have a week like this, where both of us are crazy busy and don't have time to sit down and talk spooky stories with all of you. Let us know what you think about this early take of ours on the Lost Children of the Alleghenies, and if you like us digging into these archives from time to time. If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Youtube, Instagram or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

On this episode, we remind you to make sure you file your taxes on time! Andrez takes us back to Appalachia, sort of a part 2 from the previous episode in Spanish. So many strange events have been reported here for hundreds of years. This mysterious mountain range, more so the Alleghany Mountains, have been a site for admiration and fear. In 1856, George and Joseph Cox, at the ages of 5 and 7, disappeared into these woods under circumstances. Pull up a chair and let us tell you the details. In Syria about a decade ago, while the Assad regime was focused on crushing an uprising that challenged its rule, it faced a problem. It had too many children in detention, who had been swept up when their mothers were arrested. An NPR investigation has found that hundreds of children were separated from family and placed in orphanages around Damascus by government intelligence agents. They ordered the orphanages to keep this a secret. Now that the Assad regime has fallen, families are searching the Syrian capital for their missing children. We go to Damascus to learn more.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Thirty-five years after the horrors of the Ceaușescu dictatorship were discovered in Romania, our reporters investigated one of the darkest episodes in the country's history – the squalid, state-run institutions where thousands of children were locked away and abused. An estimated 15,000 children died, mostly in so-called hospitals for those often misdiagnosed as severely disabled. While part of society is nostalgic for the Communist era, the work of collective memory and justice is far from complete.

On our third Movie Night Dystopia episode, Forrest, Conan Neutron, Kristina Oakes, and Kt Baldassaro talk to filmmaker Jared Skolnick about Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet's the City of Lost Children. The City of Lost Children is a fairy tale like surrealist black comedy about a mad scientist who kidnaps orphans in order to steal their dreams. Two years ago, on Movie Night Apocalypse, we talked to Jared and Kt about Caro-Jeunet's earlier film Delicatessen. The City of Lost Children stars Ron Perlman, who learned literally just enough French to say his lines, as well as Dominique Pinon, Daniel Emilfork, Jean-Claude Dreyfus, Cemetery Man's François Hadji-Lazaro, and Judith Vittet. #ronperlman #french #frenchcinema #surrealism #dreams #jeanpierre #marccaro #jeanpierrejeunet #amelie #filmpodcast #moviepodcast #horrormoviepodcast #cinema #frenchmovie #dystopian Jared's latest project is WOODFELLAS: While traveling to the countryside to 'deal with' an informant, three Boston mobsters run afoul of a murderous woodland cult. Cornered in a cabin, they must band together to survive a siege of zealots ready to make them their next sacrifice. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, recorded at the IT Press Tour in Malta, I am joined by Antoine Simkin, co-founder of Digi Film Corporation. Antoine Simkine is also the lead producer and managing director of the Paris-based Les Films d'Antoine, which was founded in 2004. He was also the executive producer of the VFX of about one hundred feature films such as “The City of Lost Children”, “Amelie”, “Alien Resurrection” by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, “The Ninth Gate” by Roman Polanski, “Ronin” by John Frankenheimer, “Joan of Arc” by Luc Besson, and “The Man Who Cried” by Sally Potter. Antoine Simkine has then worked for 20th Century Fox as VFX producer during the final phase of development of “I Robot” by Alex Proyas. With a unique background in cinema and digital visual effects, Antoine brings a fascinating perspective on the challenges and solutions for long-term data preservation in our rapidly evolving digital age. Antoine shares his journey from pioneering digital visual effects in the 1980s and 90s to tackling one of the industry's most pressing issues: the longevity of digital data. Reflecting on his experience working with formats like Sony DIR and DTF tapes, he highlights the challenges of data migration, evolving standards, and the risks of losing critical digital assets. His work with Digifilm Corporation introduces an innovative approach to solving these problems by blending the permanence of film with the precision of digital encoding. We explore how Digifilm's Archifix solution offers a robust alternative to traditional storage methods, ensuring data preservation for decades, if not centuries. Antoine provides insight into the diverse applications of this technology, from the cinematic world to industries such as nuclear power, defense, and architecture, where the need for secure, offline data storage is paramount. As data volumes grow exponentially and regulations around data integrity and security tighten, Antoine's vision for the future of Digifilm highlights the critical importance of balancing technological advancements with sustainable, long-term preservation strategies. Could this approach be the missing piece in solving the global data storage puzzle? What role could Digifilm play in securing our digital heritage for future generations? Listen, reflect, and join the conversation. Learn more at https://digifilm-corp.com/home

In a dark and very French world, mad scientist Krank (Daniel Emilfork) aided by his 6 clones (Dominique Pinon), tiny woman nurse (Mireille Mosse) and brain in a tank, Uncle Irvin (Jean-Louis Trintignant) sneaks into the dreams of children in order to steal them and stop his unhappy aging. While this is going on, at the docks a side show features strong man One (Ron Perlman) and his little brother, Denree (Joseph Lucien). Also, while all THAT is going on, there is a gang of kids who steal things for the Octopus (Genevieve Brunet, Odille Malet) the leader of which is street smart Miette (Judith Vittet) who reluctantly helps One when the Cyclops Cult kidnaps Denree to deliver to...you guessed it, Krank and his nightmare machine. Donate to our October 2024 OVERCOMING THE DARKNESS campaign at https://weirddarkness.com/overcoming. Weird Darkness is narrated by professional full-time voice actor Darren Marlar. IN THIS EPISODE: In 1856, two young children – Joseph and George Cox – disappeared in the Allegheny Mountains. The story is tragic… and it also has a bizarre ending. (Lost Children of the Alleghenies) *** Is he an elf? A troll? Not only is it hard to classify Latin America's El Duende – but it's even difficult to know if he's good, evil, or just a mischievous menace! (Duende The Menace) *** Bachelor's Grove Cemetery just outside of Chicago is a mystery. No one knows exactly how it got its name; no one is sure when the first burial there took place or why it has since been abandoned; there is no explanation for the strange lights that are often seen there, or the ghostly lady, or the phantom horse and rider. (Bachelor's Grove Cemetery) *** A man is found in a graveyard with a bullet to his skull, barely alive. He died later – but what exactly happened to him is a bit of a mystery. Our guess though is that it had something to do with him being a grave robber. (A Grave Robber's Fate) *** Forensics has come a long way over the years, making it harder and harder for criminals to get away with crimes – particularly brutal crimes where DNA is usually left behind because of a struggle or physical assault. But despite technological advancements, there are still those cases that remain unsolved – and we'll look at a few murders of women whose cases still can't be closed. (Unsolved Female Murders) *** How's the saying go… “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned?” That's good advice for the living – but probably even more apropos when dealing with female ghosts! (Famous Female Phantoms) *** Imagine you're in a small town and suddenly you begin seeing people around you starting to change into beastly creatures. They begin attacking those around them, ripping them apart, eating like wild animals. Then suddenly you begin the transformation yourself… you are becoming a werewolf. But you were never bitten by a monster, nor were the townsfolk. How could this be happening? This actually happened in a small town in France… and one of the theories as to how it happened will not only surprise you, but have you wondering if it will happen to you someday. Rosine bears down on Guts at supersonic speeds (literally) and their final showdown begins! These chapters (that were too long to list in the title of the podcast: A BLOODY NIGHT SKY, THE SPACE BETWEEN DEMON AND MAN, FIREFLY, THE WAY HOME, BLUE SKY ELF, THE BEAST OF DARKNESS), cover Guts' triumph over Rosine, Jill's triumph over her fears of living in her abusive home/town...and the Beast of Darkness' triumph over Guts very soul. From here on out, Guts will have to contend with his own literal inner demon, built and fueled by the hatred and murderous intent of ever kill he's ever made...and ever will make.
On today's show, I open with a concept that people involved in politics are not that different from people who get involved in Hollywood. In fairness, it was Rush Limbaugh who used to say politics was Hollywood for the ugly. I then dive into some of the breaking news from the past 24 hours. In looks like the FED is no longer able to hide just how bad the employment numbers have been. They are set to revise them down by more than a million, one of the biggest adjustments in 15 years. Kamala Harris plans to continue with the Biden plan of jacking up the Capital Gains tax rate to a record 44.6%! On top of that, they want to introduce a 25% tax rate on Unrealized Gains. So, I spend time discussing this and how disastrous this would be for all Americans. Remember how just a year ago we found out the Harris-Biden regime has lost track of 85,000 illegal minor children? Now that number has jumped to nearly 300,000. Where is the outrage? This is a travesty and needs to be hung around the necks of this open borders administration. The democrat governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, literally said someone in JD Vance's family would need to be raped to teach him his views on the sanctity of life are wrong. It's disgusting to think that someone would wish that on someone else for political gain. Then we dive into yesterday's DNC in Chicago, night two. We start with Michelle Obama and her desperation to differentiate Harris 2.0 from Harris 1.0. It's the weirdest faucet thus far of the Democrat party, to convince it's members that Kamala Harris has never done anything politically and now that she is running, there is hope for tomorrow. Then, Barack Obama took to the stage and turned it into a bit of a comedy routine, disparaging Trump throughout. It smacked of desperation and emotion, devoid of any real truth or substance. And that's what the after-commentary seemed to focus on after the evening. There was no substance or any real solutions being offered. And even the CNN panel recognized that Kamala is the current VP, yet she is running on the notion that she has no control right now and bears no responsibility for what has transpired over the past 3 ½ years. Find all of podcasts I host at https://weirddarkness.com/links.IN THIS EPISODE: In 1856, two young children – Joseph and George Cox – disappeared in the Allegheny Mountains.
