In this episode, we're honored to share a powerful conversation with Charlie Shunick — founder of the Resource Association for Missing People, forensic consultant, professor, and passionate advocate for families of the missing. Back in October 2024, G attended the virtual Cold Case Symposium — a meaningful event that brings together families of unsolved homicide and missing persons cases from across the country. It was there she heard Charlie speak, and the impact of her words was immediate and emotional. Charlie's heartfelt presentation on the harms of exploitative true crime content and the importance of ethical storytelling struck a deep chord. We knew then that we had to invite her on the show. Charlie brings a unique and invaluable perspective to this conversation. Her sister, Mickey Shunick, was tragically taken in 2012 — a loss that fuels the deeply personal work she does today. From founding her own resource organization and consulting company to teaching forensic science and maintaining a body farm (for animals!), Charlie is dedicated to making a difference both in and out of the classroom. This conversation is thoughtful, moving, and a must-listen for anyone who creates, consumes, or shares true crime content.

A serial killer is an individual who commits a series of intentional and premeditated murders, typically targeting multiple victims over an extended period of time. This specific type of criminal behavior is characterized by several key features:Pattern of Killings: Serial killers have a distinct pattern when it comes to selecting their victims and executing their crimes. They may have specific preferences regarding the victim's age, gender, appearance, or occupation.Motive: Serial killers often have complex psychological motivations for their actions. Motives can vary widely and may include a desire for power and control, sexual gratification, a need to satisfy twisted fantasies, or a compulsion driven by mental disorders.Cooling-Off Periods: After each murder, serial killers typically experience a "cooling-off" period, during which they lie low and refrain from committing further crimes. This period allows them to avoid detection and continue their killing spree.Multiple Crime Scenes: Serial killers usually commit murders in different locations, sometimes spanning across different cities, states, or even countries. This geographical mobility can make it difficult for law enforcement to connect the crimes.Signature: Many serial killers have a unique "signature" or modus operandi, which are specific behaviors or rituals they perform at the crime scene. These signatures are distinctive elements that set their crimes apart from others and are often driven by the killer's psychological needs.Lack of Connection to Victims: Unlike other types of murderers, serial killers typically have little or no personal connection to their victims. They choose victims based on certain characteristics that fulfill their fantasies or urges.Psychological Profile: Serial killers often display psychopathic or sociopathic traits, including a lack of empathy, remorse, and a propensity for manipulating others. Many have experienced troubled childhoods or traumatic events, contributing to the development of their violent tendencies.Media Attention: Serial killer cases often attract significant media attention due to the horrifying nature of their crimes, resulting in widespread fear and public interest.Investigating and apprehending serial killers is an intricate and challenging task for law enforcement agencies. It involves thorough profiling, collaboration between jurisdictions, forensic analysis, and sometimes luck. Understanding the psychology and motives behind their actions is essential in developing strategies to prevent and solve such crimes.According to the New York Times, serial killings are a thing of the past and due to technology the instances of serial killings are far and few between. Meanwhile, there have been at least four serial killers caught in the past few months, calling into question the whole article from the Times. So, let's dive in and have a look!(commercial at 11:37)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Serial Killings Like the Gilgo Beach Murders Are Becoming Rarer in the U.S. - The New York Times (nytimes.com)Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-moscow-murders-and-more--5852883/support.

The case of the Springfield Three is one of the most haunting and enduring unsolved missing persons cases in American history. On the night of June 6, 1992, in Springfield, Missouri, three women—47-year-old Sherrill Levitt, her 19-year-old daughter Suzie Streeter, and Suzie's friend 18-year-old Stacy McCall—vanished without a trace from Sherrill's home at 1717 East Delmar Street. The night before, Suzie and Stacy had just graduated from Kickapoo High School. After attending several parties, they returned to Suzie's house around 2 a.m. intending to sleep over. The plan was to go swimming the next day and meet up with friends. The next morning, the house was eerily silent. Friends who arrived to pick up the girls found all three women's personal belongings inside—purses, cars, and even Suzie and Sherrill's cigarettes were left untouched. The front porch light was broken, the glass swept up by someone, and the front door was unlocked. There were no signs of forced entry, no signs of struggle, and no clear evidence of what had happened. Over the years, multiple theories emerged, including abduction by someone they knew, a botched burglary, or even police cover-up, but none have been proven. A key figure, convicted kidnapper Robert Craig Cox, claimed to know what happened but refused to say more. Despite intense media coverage and thousands of leads, the Springfield Three remain missing, and the case continues to baffle investigators and haunt the city more than three decades later.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.com

Jodi Marie Brewer was a 19-year-old woman from Las Vegas who disappeared on August 14, 2003. Her torso was discovered two weeks later, wrapped in plastic and cloth, near Interstate 15 in San Bernardino County, California. Brewer had been involved in sex work, a factor that has drawn parallels between her case and other unsolved murders of sex workers in the early 2000s. In 2023, following the arrest of suspected serial killer Rex Heuermann, who owned timeshare properties in Las Vegas, authorities began reevaluating Brewer's case for potential connections to Heuermann, offering renewed hope for answers in her unsolved murder.Lindsay Marie Harris was a 21-year-old woman from Skaneateles, New York, who moved to Las Vegas in 2003 with her boyfriend. On May 4, 2005, she disappeared from her home in Henderson, Nevada, after being last seen making a bank deposit. Her rental car was later found abandoned in the desert, and her credit cards remained unused. Weeks later, on May 23, 2005, children discovered severed legs near Interstate 55 in Divernon, Illinois; these remains were identified as Harris's in 2008 through DNA testing.Harris had been arrested multiple times for prostitution in Las Vegas, leading investigators to suspect a connection between her murder and other unsolved cases involving sex workers. Initially, authorities considered Neal Falls, a suspected serial killer, as a potential suspect. More recently, following the 2023 arrest of Rex Heuermann, the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer with ties to Las Vegas, investigators have revisited Harris's case to explore any possible connections.to contact me:  bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Her mother, Penny Cayedito, was initially unaware of her disappearance until the following morning. Despite intensive searches and investigations, no concrete leads emerged immediately. A year later, a mysterious phone call to law enforcement, allegedly from Anthonette herself, claimed she was being held against her will, but the call was disconnected before it could be traced. In the years following her disappearance, various leads and tips surfaced, including eyewitness accounts and a reported sighting of a girl matching Anthonette's description with a couple in Nevada. However, these clues failed to lead to her recovery. The case remains unsolved, and Anthonette is still listed as missing. Her story has become emblematic of the many missing and murdered Indigenous women in the U.S., highlighting systemic challenges in investigating such cases. Tammy Kingery, a 37-year-old mother of three from Edgefield County, South Carolina, mysteriously disappeared on September 20, 2014, leaving behind a baffling and haunting case. After returning home early from work, feeling unwell, Tammy sent a short, urgent text to her husband, asking him to come home, but by the time he arrived, Tammy was gone. Her phone, wallet, keys, and dog were left behind in their locked house, sparking a massive search that turned up no trace of her. Investigators explored multiple theories, including voluntary disappearance, suicide, foul play, and abduction, but no concrete evidence has ever been found. Despite re-examining the case in 2020 with updated forensic techniques, her disappearance remains unsolved, leaving her family and investigators grappling with lingering questions and a chilling uncertainty.Nefertiri Trader, a 33-year-old mother from New Castle, Delaware, disappeared under suspicious circumstances on June 30, 2014. Surveillance footage captured an unidentified man forcing her into her car outside her home around 4:00 a.m. The car was later found abandoned, but no trace of Trader was discovered. Despite extensive investigations by local law enforcement and the FBI, including neighborhood canvassing, analysis of personal connections, digital footprints, and public appeals, there has been no significant progress in the case. The lack of physical evidence and credible leads has left the investigation at a standstill, with Trader's whereabouts remaining unknown nearly a decade later. The case remains open, but the probability of resolution diminishes with time.And...Kelsey Collins, a 19-year-old woman from Everett, Washington, disappeared on May 9, 2009, shortly after testifying in a federal case against a human trafficking ring. Having been a victim of trafficking herself, Collins provided crucial testimony against her traffickers, which made her a key witness in the case. Her disappearance, occurring just weeks after her court appearance, raised suspicions of foul play, possibly as retaliation to prevent further cooperation with law enforcement. Despite extensive investigations by local and federal authorities, no substantial leads have emerged, and her case remains unsolved. Theories surrounding her disappearance range from targeted abduction by the traffickers to her voluntary disappearance, but no conclusive evidence has been found to support any one scenario, leaving her fate a troubling mystery in the ongoing fight against human trafficking.(commercial at 8:57)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
