As well as it just being a really great view the documentary “John Farnham: Finding the Voice” spoke to me about another aspect of life – our faith journey. So often we can think that we are all alone and all our struggles are just impacting me. Throughout our lives none of us is completely alone, even in the darkest moments, for the Lord is with us. Sadly, it might not be the same for everyone all the time. So, who do know who might need to know that they are valued, respected – we all need someone to help us Find our Voice. Towards the end of the show John speaks about friendship. He says – something I believe in very, very strongly is what you give is what you get. Helping someone is a great gift that we can all do, even when we are struggling.)

God in the Everyday–Fr Mike Delaney–Where is God (Fr Mike says last August, on the feast of the Assumption, I was sitting in the Church before Mass praying. As I sat with my eyes closed, I became aware of the warmth of the bright sunlight – yes Tassie can have sunny days in August – that was all around me and I became more conscious of God's wonderful presence surrounding me. It also reminded me of the Old Testament reading from the 1st Book of Kings – the story of Eliza meeting the Lord on the mountain top. It doesn't matter if it is a gentle breeze, bright sunlight or even a mighty storm – there can be many moments when we can be still before the Lord, and we can be aware of God's presence. And it doesn't have to be on the mountain top after we have run in fear from our enemies, or even from our friends. Nor does it have to be in a Church where there are big windows that allow in mighty bursts of sunlight – it can be where you are right at this minute. All God asks is that you be silent so that you can listen to the gentle voice of God calling you into a deeper relationship with the God of life. I answered my own question – Where is God? – by looking all around and finding him in the beauty of that moment and it stayed with me throughout the day. I hope that you might find the answer to the question as you look around you and encounter God‘s presence today in all that you can see.)

Some time back I spoke about the challenge to pray for a greater response by the Church to becoming Missionary Disciples. Ultimately what these wine awards are saying is that on a given day, in a given place, the wine chosen is the best of all those that have been presented for judging. However, even though we might take notice of wine awards, the main question is – did I enjoy the wine and would I enjoy another glass. Is my personal judgement that buying that wine was a great decision? What happens when I meet people? Do we make decisions based on what other people have said about them, do we act like the wine snob who only takes notice of what others think and don't take the time to get to know them and make my own decision? Jesus says – ‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me.' Gospel Reflection– Fr Mike Delaney– Just Another Question (In today's Gospel there is no actual question being asked of Jesus – rather he makes a comment about what it means to live a faithful life according to the Law of Moses. The Pharisees taught the Law which they considered a firm foundation and Jesus acknowledges that. But their hearts were not open to what God had intended the Law to proclaim – that he was their God, and they were his children. Jesus condemns their teaching and in contrast Jesus teaches – ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for you souls' (11:28-29). As the extended family arrive with their cards and presents and as I watched her listening to the grandchildren's stories, I was reminded of a night sitting round a campfire almost 40 years ago as I enjoyed the company of her family in a camping ground at Port Arthur. On that night, her father had asked the children to share their answer to a question that he posed. No-one jumped in to give the answer – they waited until the youngest gave her answer. Then each child, from youngest to the oldest, made their contribution, each adding to the wisdom and understanding of their siblings. As I watched this now grandmother ask each child to tell their story I felt that I was blessed to be able to experience these two events so many years apart but so similar in their execution. As we grow in our faith journey, we should be able to add something to the conversation – but I wonder if we allow people the opportunity to make their contribution. The next time a conversation starts pray for the grace to listen and the love to encourage the person we're talking with to share their story and their faith.)

Gospel Reflection– Fr Mike Delaney–At What Cost-4-Doing the Will of God (Fr Mike Delaney concludes his multi-week reflection series that he is calling At What Cost. To put today's reading into a bit of a context, Jesus has entered Jerusalem when he's been welcomed by the people joyfully. From there, he'd gone to the temple where he'd driven the traders from the temple and had been challenged by the chief priests and the scribes. By what authority are you doing these things? We hear Jesus tell this parable about the two brothers who were asked by their father to work in the family vineyard, and we see two quite different responses. Jesus then asks the scribes and Pharisees which of the two did the father's will? Without hesitation, they were able to answer the first. Later in Matthew's Gospel, Jesus will again remind us that it's not what we say or believe that will determine whether we are faithful to the will of God, it will be what we've done. So where do we stand today in our response to God's call in our lives? Do I hear God in the everyday inviting me to answer his call to be a disciple in the vineyard?)

Gospel Reflection– Fr Mike Delaney–At What Cost-3-Boundless Generosity (Fr Mike Delaney continues his multi-week reflection series that he is calling At What Cost. This week, we're again faced with the challenge in the gospel regarding the boundless generosity of God and our response. This passage provides two insights into the generosity of God. Firstly, the payment of a denarius to each person was not the payment of a wage for work done, it was the payment that was the amount considered to be necessary for a family to have sufficient to survive each day. The 2nd way is to perhaps look at the parable in the light of what happens when someone, who's a Johny-come-lately, is accepted as being as much a part of the community as I am. And therefore, is as worthy of the mercy of God as I am. So, the question becomes; what happens, what will it cost me, that allows me to change my attitude so that I can really understand the generous love of God that is not concerned about how, when, or why, but who? Rather than resent God's generosity, we'll actually give thanks that God is bigger than we are, and is just to all of us, no matter when or how we hear the word of God.)

Gospel Reflection– Fr Mike Delaney–At What Cost-2-Boundless Mercy (Fr Mike Delaney continues his multi-week reflection series that he is calling At What Cost. Today's Gospel then takes us beyond what the limits of our human experience are. We hear Peter ask Jesus, Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me. Jesus' response tells him and is further developed in the parable that the mercy and love of God is not limited by our human imagining but is boundless. Using the price of silver, the 10,000 talents would be almost $300 million, so for the king to forgive that kind of level of debt is beyond our imagining. The 2nd man owning the first servant 100 denarii is the equivalent of 100 days wages, which is around $34,000. What does this story mean for us in the light of God's generosity? Do I recognise that the first servant is a Jesus image, someone who gave everything for me, and that I frequently am the second servant who really struggles to forgive my sister and my brother? A question for today is: Will it cost me to look at forgiveness differently so that I can see God's mercy being poured out both as justice and compassion in every moment of my day?)

Gospel Reflection– Fr Mike Delaney–At What Cost-1-Reflect Before Responding (Fr Mike Delaney commences a 4-week reflection series that he is calling At What Cost. In today's Gospel we're being reminded that one of the challenges we can face in our living out the gospel is, how to respond to issues that arise within the Community. Jesus instructed his disciples to correct the faults and failings amongst members of the Community and effectively how we are to act in our day, but I wonder, as we heard these words, whether you would, or could do what is being asked of us. We need to reflect on what is happening before we act in order that we're faithfully fulfilling the call of being a disciple. It's not my belief or position that I need to defend, but it's the gospel that must be defended. The final part of today's reading has an important message for us. Going to God in prayer with others before we tackle serious issues is an important and integral step if we are to address the challenge of correcting faults and failings in one another. Anything less is unchristian.)

God in the Everyday—Fr Mike Delaney–Lent (As we celebrate the Resurrection, Fr Mike says tells of a Lenten experience he had that showed that people sometimes do listen to what he says. At the parish primary school on Ash Wednesday, Fr Mike shared with the students one of his Lenten observances, to put money in the Project Compassion box each time he had a can of Pepsi. During the Taste of Huon event one of the students asked Fr Mike how many fines he had paid for breaking his Pepsi fast. Usually, we don't share with others our self-denial decisions, but because he did share it with the school children, he wonders if it did make him more accountable. It's a reminder that frequently we do need someone in our lives who holds us accountable for our behaviour and can challenge us when we need encouragement.)

God in the Everyday—Fr Mike Delaney—The Phone Call (Fr Mike contemplates the wonder and perhaps restrictions created by the mobile phone. Recently, a retired priest who is a great mate of his sister-in-law's uncle was admitted to hospital after a medical episode during Mass. Thanks to the mobile phone “ring around” Fr Mike became aware of the priest's situation before the priest's sister in a classic case of how someone had rung someone on the mainland who had rung Fr Mike's brother who had rung Fr Mike who then contacted the priest's sister. There's an old saying that says – once upon a time the phone was attached to the wall and we were free to wander wherever we wanted but now we are attached to the phones and our freedom is gone. Fr Mike wonders how often do we really appreciate our mobile phone and all the things that it can do to help people and make life easier or do we now just take it for granted.)

This God spot is the result of opening a file with just the word “Zacchaeus” in it, listening to a homily about clutter in one's life, trying to put a God Spot together. Zacchaeus is the story of a man who wondered who Jesus was and looked for a way to see him by climbing a tree. As the story unfolds, we hear Zacchaeus pledging to make restitution to anyone he had cheated. He was uncluttering his life in a very different way, but he was now open to the Lord in a real way. This God spot is not what I would have thought when I originally created a file called Zacchaeus, but then, isn't that the way that God frequently works in our lives.)

Every day there will be people who experience great sorrow that can almost crush even the strongest person and there can be great joy that brings hope and life into a dark world. In moments of sorrow, as well as our prayers for those who are struggling, the most powerful gifts we have are simply our presence and even our silence. In moments of joy, we usually don't have to do very much at all because the joy is contagious and life-giving.)

Today, Sima joins Mike Delaney, the Managing Partner of Court Square Capital Partners, and Gary Laben, the Former CEO of Dynata, on a panel discussion to discuss various issues related to the insights and marketing industry. What is the biggest obstacle and gaps you see for the insights and marketing industry moving forward? Sima thinks that the biggest challenges are getting used to all the change and managing all the available data. One of the biggest changes Gary has seen is how talent has been disrupted over the last few years. That has created an entirely different environment for acquisition, retention, growth, and development.  How are best practice companies dealing with how to work from home and culture? Gary believes that the values of a company define its culture. Mike believes that culture is singularly the most important thing that defines who will win in the marketplace. He has dealt with many leaders who feel that being in the office is essential for building a culture. However, many workers prefer to work from home. So the companies that tried to mandate going back into the office had to back off and opt for a more virtual environment because they had very high resignation rates. What should industry leaders focus on to ensure their success and help move the industry forward? Mike has seen marketing come a long way in terms of its importance to value creation within the enterprise. He feels that marketing has become a differentiator in how businesses can grow. However, there is so much data available now that typical marketing executives get overwhelmed by it, making it hard for them to take full advantage of it and consume it in a way that adds value to their businesses. So, industry leaders need to focus on making data more easily consumable for marketing executives and more tangible for them in terms of how it translates into actions.  Gary thinks leaders must determine the most important KPIs and use them in a disciplined way. How should leaders use various data sources to help them make better decisions? Sima thinks that all the data within an organization should exist culturally as part of that organization. She also thinks leaders need to consider the decisions they need to make and be disciplined in pulling in the right data sets to inform their decisions. What is Dynata doing to transform itself by connecting the insights and marketing industry to grow its addressable market? Dynata is on a journey to use its data in more places than originally intended. In creating more products and services, they have had to retool many technologies to make them fit for a broader application. They have to secure additional permissions to use that application and offer additional training to ensure their people understand where the business is going. They must also create an ecosystem that acknowledges where they are headed and extend their value proposition. Which skill sets are most critical for our industry? People need to take risks, be willing to fail, and be prepared to learn from failing. They also need to learn how to be comfortable outside their comfort zones and be prepared to do things that are data-driven and informed, even when those things are done in an entirely different way from how they were programmed to think about them. Coping with the current economic turbulence Everyone is always looking for higher rates of return. Many marketing departments and people running businesses are thinking about paying off some debts and ways to drive more earnings. Mike thinks we will see a re-rating of how much risk will cost, and people will be more willing to put capital into those investments. He believes that that will impact marketing. Fortunately, marketing budgets are getting more respect than they used to because the return on capital can now be proven.  Top predictions for the industry Gary thinks the industry will continue to expand and extend dat...

It reminds him of the pleasure of God speaking into our ordinary everyday activity and that there is so much beauty in life that we can miss if our mind is focused elsewhere. We've been living on our new street for almost nine months now, and other than hellos as we come and go or quick chats at the end of the driveway, this was the first time we'd actually sat down with one of our neighbors to really get to know them.   It was lovely. I'm so grateful they invited us over.   It got me thinking about the status of neighbors and our interactions with them in this fast-paced and highly digitalized world we now live in. How many of us actually know our neighbors? Maybe we know their first names and a rough idea of what they do for a living, but who can say they actually have a relationship with their neighbors.   We used to live in Central Florida, and when we moved onto our street back in 2006, our next-door neighbor was a guy named Mike Delaney. From the day we moved in, Mike made it his mission to get to know us and to introduce us to the other neighbors. Marc and I and the other neighbors joked that he was the mayor of our cul de sac. And while sometimes he bordered on a little nosy at time, the truth is that it felt good that there was someone on our street who really cared about the people he ended up living next to.      Mike was in his seventies back then, and maybe that's part of the reason he was so adamant about getting to know us; he came from an era when that was the norm.   These days, it's not really the norm, is it?   “By and large, we're lonelier and unhappier than we were in the decades before the Internet age,” writes Susan Pinker in her book The Village Effect: How face-to-Face Contact Can Make Us Happier and Healthier. “Psychologists don't know why that is exactly, though we do know that close relationships are the strongest drivers of happiness, and that being alone and unaffiliated makes us the most unhappy. The evidence is pretty clear that we are wired for frequent and genuine interaction. As humans, we need to know that we belong.”   Belonging matters. In fact, the relatively new field of social neuroscience, which looks at the relationship between social experiences and biological systems, is overflowing with evidence for how the health of our relationships is directly tied to our mental and physical health. We thrive in community. And if I'm to make meaningful social connection a core part of my thrive plan, then neighbors are just low hanging fruit. They're literally right next door.   Now, I'm not talking about having tea with Rick and Leslie every week. We're busy, they're busy. It would be unrealistic to keep that up. But next time I see Rick washing his car, can I stop for five minutes and have a nice chat? Next time I see our other neighbor walking his dog, can I pause for a few moments to connect?   It all comes down to identifying what matters (in this case, meaningful connection and creating a sense of community) and then being intentional about having what matters be a priority. It's noticing that these little two- and five-minute moments to connect really matter. It's slowing down in life long enough to seize the opportunity to connect when it arises.   Sometimes it's going beyond the organic, spontaneous opportunities to connect—like when we bump into each other while walking our dogs or putting out our recycling—and inviting someone over for tea, like Rick and Leslie did for us.   Remember my neighbor Mike Delaney? While we lost touch after he moved to back to Pennsylvania, when he passed away a few years ago we had the opportunity to connect with his sister. What Marc and I told her was that we would never forget how Mike made us feel; like we mattered, like we belonged. And this was all because Mike took the time to be a good neighbor: to connect, to get to know us, to show he cared. Maybe it's as simple as stopping to connect for a few minutes a week with someone we live near. Maybe this small act isn't so small after all.
