Why were Laetitia Casta and Aishwarya Rai criticized for their appearance at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival? What starts as celebrity gossip quickly becomes a much bigger conversation about beauty standards, aging, body image, and social media. Because the more I looked at the comments coming out of Cannes, the more one question kept nagging at me:Did the tabloids disappear—or did we become them? Are. You. Send a textOn Inside Geneva this week, we look at women fighting for justice. In 2017, Myanmar's military launched an assault on the Rohingya population. Almost a million were displaced, there were reports of horrific violations: rape, the murder of children, including babies.“The accounts that affected me most are those of children. Now I'm a grandfather, I sit there and listen and I think of my own kids when they were young and my grandkids now. How can you not?,” says Chris Sidoti from the Myanmar fact-finding mission. The UN investigators who documented the evidence were shocked, but feared there would be no accountability.“They asked me for justice and when I asked them 'why are you here, why have you been waiting all day in the camps', many of them were not able to walk, they had not eaten and they wanted justice. And at that time, I really thought it would not be possible for justice to come,” says Antonia Mulvey from Legal Action Worldwide. But now, almost a decade later, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) is hearing a case of genocide against Myanmar.“To see now, action in the ICJ: I still know how many years it's going to take. I still know that the Myanmar butchers who are responsible for what happened may never individually be brought to justice. But I certainly live in hope that one day they will,” says Sidoti.Mulvey is at the ICJ, supporting women who are testifying about what happened. “If you were in that court, I can assure you, international law is alive and it is fighting very hard,” she says.Join host Imogen Foulkes on Inside Geneva.Get in touch! Welcome back, loves! The male gaze didn't begin with film, it was already centuries old by the time cameras appeared. In this episode, I trace how powerful patrons, religious institutions and elite collectors shaped beauty standards through the paintings they commissioned. From reclining Venuses to carefully staged portraits, these images didn't just depict women, they trained viewers how to look at them. But when women finally entered the art world and began painting themselves and each other, the visual language started to shift.By the end of the episode, you may never look at a painting, a movie scene, or even your own camera roll quite the same way again.Are. Acclaimed short fiction writers Sarah Hall, Jonathan Escoffery, and Niamh Mulvey on building immersive worlds in compressed spaces, grounding stories in real human stakes, and writing openings and endings that transform both character and reader. Timestamps: 00:01:06 Sarah Hall (from Episode 161) 00:14:43 Jonathan Escoffery (from Episode 56) 00:26:42 Niamh Mulvey (previously unreleased conversation) You'll learn: Sarah Hall's “keyhole” approach to short stories — and how the unseen world beyond the scene gives a story its depth. Why trusting your preoccupations beats forcing a theme, and how over-awareness of your own subject can kill the fiction. A technique for thickening a thin first draft: telescope into your character's childhood, then out to their future. Why Jonathan Escoffery believes stories without real-world stakes will lose to equally crafted stories that engage with the world, every time. How Escoffery pairs imagination with lived emotional experience to make unfamiliar settings resonate — and why personal growth feeds artistic growth. What choosing a linked story collection over a novel taught Escoffery about pacing, pause, and propulsive energy. Why Niamh Mulvey thinks showing off your best writing in an opening is a mistake — and what to do instead (start specific, name a character, put two people in relation). A prompt for finding your story's urgency: ask “why this moment?” and aim for the energy of really good gossip. How character desire shapes place and plot at the same time, so setting becomes what your character wants rather than backdrop. Mulvey's “third element” — a character, object, or event seeded early that can emerge later to unlock your ending. Resources & Links: Join our LWS community! At long last, our ATP “hot list,” in our signature TBS style. Our mission: have fun, be sex-positive, not put anyone down, and marvel at how subjective and silly all this is. We talk about the ethics of objectifying men, the male gaze and male gays, and the “structures of looking” from Laura Mulvey on into the 21st century. After that bit of (hopefully interesting) table-setting, we get right into our categories of hotness (brains, aura, and ass are a few key examples). Finally, each of us share our hot lists of both active and retired players. Stay tuned for a few embarrassing crushes and lots of Rafa/Bjorn/Grigor mentions; and remember, with men the ick is always just around the corner. 4:05 Is objectifying men ok? 14:00 The straight male gaze, the straight woman gaze, and the gay gaze 19:20 “The male figure cannot bear the burden of sexual objectification” (Mulvey, 1975) 27:25 So why are we doing this? Well, first of all, it's fun 32:55 Categories that make up hotness, starting with Aura 38:05 A key category: slutty shorts 56:00 The daddy archetype and faces that belong on a coin 60:15 Our lists 68:40 Embarrassing or disavowed crushes: we all have them 73:30 The retired players who would have made the list

Send us a textAt the razor's edge where civilization meets chaos stood a man whose name struck both fear and awe - Wild Bill Hickok. The sweltering summer of 1869 found Hays City, Kansas transformed into a powder keg of violence where 37 licensed liquor sellers hosted a volatile mix of railroad workers, soldiers, buffalo hunters, and fortune-seekers.When traditional law enforcement faltered against this tide of lawlessness, the town turned to James Butler Hickok, hoping his fearsome reputation might restore order where others had failed. Within just five weeks as acting sheriff, Hickok would face two deadly confrontations that defined his controversial approach to frontier justice. The first clash came when Bill Mulvey, "a notorious murderer from Missouri," terrorized the streets in a drunken rampage, firing indiscriminately through businesses. Using a clever tactical deception, Hickok called to imaginary men behind Mulvey, creating just enough distraction to draw and fire a single fatal shot. Just weeks later, when Samuel Strauhun and eighteen companions destroyed John Bitter's beer saloon, Hickok's warning was chillingly direct: "Do, and they will carry you out." When Strauhun challenged this ultimatum, another deadly shot rang out.Though coroner's inquests ruled both killings justified, Hays City began questioning whether Hickok's methods were too extreme - a sentiment that would soon cost him his position. Through these blood-soaked confrontations emerges a complex portrait of frontier justice, where the line between necessary force and excessive violence blurred in the prairie dust.Experience the raw, unfiltered story of Wild Bill's Hays City and decide for yourself: was he the solution to lawlessness or something more troubling? In this conversation I ask Professors Sam Richards & Laurey Mulvey about some of the most controversial topics concerning race and ethnicity in the US today. Is White Privilege a useful term that helps build understanding and facilitates conversation, or does it generate social tension and make poor white people feel gaslit? What is DEI, why is it so contentious, and can it be implemented effectively? What makes the N-word and blackface so triggering? Why are US racial social norms so culturally dominant and readily exported? Sam Richards is a sociologist and Teaching Professor at Penn State and a Distinguished Professor at Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea. He runs SOC119, which is the largest race, ethnicity and cultural relations course in the world. Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon his class is live streamed to 370,000 subscribers from around the world, and his classes have had over 400 million views. His willingness to challenge orthodox thinking led him to be named one of the “101 Most Dangerous Professors in America” and together with Laurie Mulvey is one of the “parents of radical empathy.” Laurie Mulvey is the director and co-founder of the World in Conversation Center for Public Diplomacy at Penn State, which is the largest dialogue center in the United States, hosting more than 17,000 participants each academic year. The Center has worked with the UNDP, UNESCO, and NATO, along with organizations and universities in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Palestinian Territories, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar, China, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, and twelve nations in the NATO Alliance to host dialogues between people separated by vast distances and borders. Laurie is a master facilitator, focused on moderating beneficial conversations between different groups on some of the most difficult, hot button topics. ►Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/wd2DytWSAYE ►Find out more about Sam's work here: https://sociology.la.psu.edu/people/sam-richards/ ►Find out more about Laurie's work here: https://sociology.la.psu.edu/people/laurie-mulvey/ These conversations are supported by the Andrea von Braun foundation (http://www.avbstiftung.de/), as an exploration of the rich, exciting, connected, scientifically literate, and (most importantly) sustainable future of humanity. Chris Smither has been Peter Mulvey's mentor since back in 1993, when the young Mulvey opened for the already seasoned Smither. The blues and folk legend liked what he heard and enjoyed the similarities in creativity and quirks and he took that young man on the road with him. Their musical partnership has crossed paths and outlasted the digital age, the pandemic, parenthood and the indictment of a former president. Along the way each has worked to influence their best habits and life lessons on the other and as far as mentor-mentee relationships go, this one is for the history books. Also there are nods to David 'Goody' Goodrich, Jeffrey Foucault, Kris Delmhorst and the woman behind it all: Carol Young (aka Smither's long-time manager, aka his wife). In this rare joint interview, we address the important questions: like why do they delight in calling each other by their last names? Smither shares that he was first called by his last name in Paris when he was in school. They debate who has the better hometown: Milwaukee or New Orleans. Actually it's not so much a debate as a reflection on New Orleans music, since that is clearly the better spot to grow up a musician. Mulvey reflects on their musical differences citing some of his main inspirations to be Kendrick Lamar and Ani DiFranco versus Smither's affinity for Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. We break down how each feels about fatherhood and try to get Smither to spill his secret to longevity. Spoiler alert: it's not from remaining still. Chris Smither's 20th album All About the Bones is out now. Peter Mulvey's latest is the acoustic retrospective More Notes From Elsewhere.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? Today Blu interviews Drew Mulvey MS, CDN, CNS, CLT, PNL1, CISN. Drew graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Bridgeport with a Master of Science in Human Nutrition in 2018 and received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 2012. She is currently certified by the state of Connecticut as a Certified Dietitian/Nutritionist as well as a Board-Certified Nutrition Specialist, Certified Leap Therapist, Precision Nutrition Level 1 Coach, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Integrative Sports Nutritionist, and has her own practice Redeeming Life Nutrition, LLC. Drew has gained her nutrition experience working in several arenas including weight loss clinics, personal training, interning under a naturopathic doctor, through her personal practice, and a competitive residency program under a functional medicine nutritionist. She prides herself in helping active women transform their mindsets and beliefs around food, find their true selves, and empower them to ignite their true athletic potential. Her passion stems from my struggles with disordered eating and multiple health battles during my teens, such as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autoimmunity, and bulimia. In her twenties, from overactivity and disordered eating patterns known as orthorexia, she developed the Female Athlete Triad, a complex stemming from low energy intake and leading to a loss of menses and decreased bone density. All these significantly impacted on her athletic career and could have all been avoided. She decided to enroll in her Master of Nutrition program so that her eyes were open to other avenues such as Naturopathic Medicine, Acupuncture, Nutrition, Supplementation, Food Sensitivity Testing, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Mindset Reformation. By incorporating these principles, entering a 12-step program known as Celebrate Recovery, and reshaping her relationship with food and herself; she was able to break the chains of disordered eating and regain her athletic ability back. Today, she has now found a deep passion for endurance sports and has an Ironman 70.3 set in her future endeavors. Her goal is to get to the root cause of the problem spiritually, emotionally, and physically to create new foundations, leading these women to transformation and success in their athletic careers and their lives. It is an incredibly individualized approach that captures their strengths and uses them to "break the cycle."
The spirit of Parkrun is not centred around beating your fastest time but if there's a wall there, you may as well try and jump over it some time. You can sit on it, arrange to meet friends at the wall, chew the fat and have fun but occasionally it's ok to jump it. With the help of the Queen of Irish athletics you can instantly take minutes off your time. You're not going to believe how glaringly obvious and ingenious her tips are. Profound wisdom that is hard won from her years training and winning all around the world. Later in the show elite physical therapist and coach Vinny Mulvey joins me to discuss the best way to prepare your week to run fast on a Saturday morning and how to make a Rocky trilogy in a month of Parkruns. You'll be standing with both fists in the air at the end of this episode. Jarlath is also on tour right now.
