Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss a captivating memoir by English writer and academic Sarah Moss, performed by Morven Christie. From an early age, society taught Moss that girls are to be restrained, smart but not too smart, and at home, she learned a girl must stay thin above all else. Moss's memoir follows her life as she pushes back against the patriarchal structures that threaten to confine her. Christie's performance perfectly captures Moss's narrative voice, creating a quiet intimacy. As Moss battles with an eating disorder, Christie's narration develops layers of emotional depth and keeps listeners enraptured. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. What do you get the person who has everything? A home DNA testing kit seems to be the present du jour and in the UK alone, more than 4.7million of us have spit into a vial to find out more about our ancestry. Journalist Jenny Kleeman's new BBC Sounds series, The Gift, explores what happens when technology, genealogy and identity collide, and our Mick got on the Zoom with her to chat crimes solved, sperm stolen, and why these kits' popularity show no signs of waning. Because what could possibly go wrong? After a full six years of trying, it's finally happened: the glorious Morven Christie is chatting to Hannah. They talk her new series, Payback (which starts tonight on ITV), The A-Word, leaving Twitter, and the effects, if any, of the #MeToo movement in telly. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's got her football on – there's a lot of it about – from grassroots club Victoria Park to Nigeria's Super Falcons. And all of those women are dealing with tomshittery. FFS.And how's about some family-friendly child exploitation? You got it! In Rated or Dated, we watch 1968's Oliver!. Will we be asking for more? How long is that song going on for? And does Mick actually know what ‘loveable' means? Plus, there are gaps all over the shop in the Bush Telegraph. Mind them? We're fecking livid about them.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Crime is in the air this week, so who better to draft in than the queen of crime, Steph Seelan? Steph holds down the fort for Kay (on holiday, typical) as we find trouble at the gym with Mrs Sidhu Investigates on Drama, a villainous Peter Mullen after his money in Payback on ITV, and a teen drama about reintegrating into secondary school life with Everything Now on Netflix. Plus Morven Christie drops by to talk to Boydy, and we mull over the most magnetic actors on screen (who are then placed into a bucket, for reasons).

Award-winning casting director, Kharmel Cochrane has a reputation for championing new and diverse talent across film and television. In Film, she's worked on John Wick: Chapter 4, Saint Maud and with Robert Eggers on all three of his feature films: The Witch, The Lighthouse and the upcoming The Northman. Beginning in shorts and music videos, Kharmel's first feature credit as Casting Director was on British-Cambodian director Hong Khaou's debut feature Lilting. Morven Christie’s limpid, Scottish-inflected voice and gentle, enticing tone combine to lure listeners into Sarah Moss’s astonishing seventh novel as effectively as mermaids tempt sailors into the sea. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten discuss this memorable tale set at a Scottish holiday camp over the course of a long, rainy day, written in a series of linked vignettes. Each is its own vivid, heartfelt, mysterious, or humorous story that builds with the others toward an unexpected and shocking final drama. Christie’s narration keeps listeners rapt while maintaining rhythm with the action. An outstanding performance. Published by Macmillan Audio. It seems like an age, but we’re back, rested and ready to fire up the mics and get back to doing what we do...We wanted someone very special to talk to for us coming back and getting down to business so when looking through a very large list of artists that we want to talk to, seeing where both myself and Griff would be in the country, the stars aligned. We found that we were in Manchester and guess who else was nearby... The magnificent MORVEN CHRISTIE!!!!! As you’ll hear near the start, we’ve been talking about making this conversation happen for well over a year but we’re so pleased it’s happened now and WHAT A CORKER of an episode this is. We touch on some very serious subjects on this one. This is just a conversation. We are not professionals so if you’ve been affected by any of the subjects we discuss please do seek out professional help or talk to a trusted friend or family member. You’ll know Morven from all sorts of stuff; Grantchester, The A Word, The Replacement, Doctor Who, Young Victoria, Hunted most recently The Bay on ITV1 also starring past TSP guest Dan Ryan. We’re thrilled to be back and even more thrilled that we’re kicking things off with this incredible conversation. Thanks for all your messages of support whilst we’ve been “off air”. And on Bank Holiday Monday there was the first viewing, from a BTL investor who has decided to widen his search to include Brighton instead of Worthing. Who Or What’s Impressed Nicola likes The Bay on ITV starring Morven Christie, and Judith is impressed by Tiger Woods’ winning the US Masters for the first time since 2005 and more importantly for her golf-mad nephew, Jeremy, sticking by his hero for those 13 years while Tiger wasn’t so successful in winning.
