189: UX Portfolio Myth: Your case studies don't need to show the full UX process (Myth 3 / 5)

UX portfolio case studies don't need to walk through every single step of your process, and trying to do that is actually working against you. This is week three of a five part series on UX portfolio myths, and this episode tackles a big one, the belief that every case study needs to show the whole end to end process for a project.Sarah argues the opposite works better. Going deep into just one or two parts of a project beats trying to cram in everything you did, especially for projects that spanned six months, a year, or longer. Trying to show it all just skims the surface of everything and overwhelms the person reviewing it, which is the opposite of what you want. She backs this up with a clip from her interview with Alexander Zeh, former Head of Product Design at ManyChat, who said he's specifically listening for problem solving language, phrases like "I facilitated," "I unblocked," "I synthesized," because those signal maturity in how a candidate thinks, not just what they produced. The bulk of the episode is a screen share walkthrough where Sarah rebuilds a weak case study slide by slide, showing exactly what it looks like to go from a shallow "next, I made some wireframes" slide into one that explains the problem, the decision, the reasoning, and the impact. If your case studies currently read like a list of what you did, this episode shows you exactly what to change and why.Topics Discussed✅ Why cramming your entire UX process into one case study actually works against you✅ What Alexander Zeh, former Head of Product Design at ManyChat, said he's actually listening for in a portfolio walkthrough✅ A live screen share breakdown showing the difference between a shallow case study slide and one that goes deep✅ Why "next, I made some wireframes" is what Sarah calls a five alarm fire in a portfolio✅ How to handle a case study for a project that spanned six months, a year, or longer without trying to cram in everything✅ What questions your case study should actually be answering, beyond just what you did✅ Why you might choose to highlight different parts of the same long project depending on the specific role you're applying forLinks & Resources

Behind the Business #9: How I Actually Get Work Done With Three Kids at Home Hook: How I stay consistent in my business—even when motivation is gone. Welcome back to Behind the Business, where I'm taking you behind the scenes of how I actually run Classy Career Girl. Last week, I took you behind the scenes of my life—motherhood, homeschooling, travel, routines, and the choices we've made as a family. This week, we're going behind the business. Yesterday, I shared the one-page business plan I actually use. But here's the thing: A business plan doesn't work if you don't actually do the work. And that is what I want to talk about today. Because I have three kids at home. We homeschool. We have gymnastics, activities, appointments, meals, laundry, and all the normal things happening around us. And I still have a business to run. So how do I actually get things done? Especially on the days when I don't feel motivated? Motivation Is Not My Strategy One of the biggest things I've learned after more than a decade of entrepreneurship is this: You cannot build a business based on whether you feel motivated that day. There are mornings when I'm excited to work. There are also mornings when I'm tired, someone needs me, the schedule changes, or I would rather do almost anything else. Consistency comes from having a simple system I can return to. And for me, that starts with knowing my priorities. 1. I Design My Work Around My Life I don't start by asking: "How can I fit my family around everything I need to accomplish in my business?" I do the opposite. I look at our family schedule first. When are we homeschooling? When do the kids need me? What activities do we have? When do I want to be completely off? Then I decide where work fits. I've learned that less time can actually make me more productive because I have to decide what truly matters. I can't spend six hours making a Canva graphic perfect. I have to focus on the work that actually grows the business. 2. I Know My Most Important Business Activities There will always be more things I could do than I have time to do. So I focus first on the activities that move the business forward: Sales. What am I selling? Who needs to hear about it? What conversations do I need to have? Delivery. What do my clients and customers need from me? Marketing. What podcast, email, social media post, or piece of content needs to go out? Everything else comes after those things. Because a full to-do list does not necessarily mean you're growing your business. 3. I Pick My Top Three This is probably one of the simplest things I do, but it makes a huge difference. Every day, I identify my top three priorities. Not 27. Three. If the day completely falls apart but I accomplish those three things, I can still say: "Today moved the business forward." That helps me avoid spending my best working hours answering random emails, organizing files, or doing little tasks that feel productive but aren't actually important. 4. I Time Block the Work Once I know the priorities, I give them somewhere to live. I don't just write: "Record podcast." I decide when I'm recording the podcast. I don't just write: "Follow up with potential clients." I put a block on my calendar to do it. Your calendar forces you to confront reality. You might have 15 things on your list, but only two hours available. Something has to go. And that's okay. 5. I Make Consistency Easier I also use simple tools to reduce the amount of thinking I have to do. I use things like ChatGPT to help me organize a messy brain dump into priorities. I use project-management tools to keep track of what needs to happen. I use Calendly so I'm not going back and forth scheduling calls. I use ManyChat so someone can comment a keyword and automatically receive the resource they're looking for. The goal isn't to add more technology. The goal is to remove friction. Every little decision you can eliminate gives you more energy for the work that actually needs you. 6. I Communicate My Boundaries This is a huge one when you work from home. My kids know there are times when Mom is working. They also know there are times when they have my full attention. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. There are interruptions. Plans change. Someone needs something. That's life with kids. But having boundaries and rhythms makes it possible for me to be present in both places. What I Do When Motivation Is Completely Gone And then there are those days. You know the ones. You don't want to record the podcast. You don't want to write the email. You don't want to make the sales call. Here's what I do: I make the next step smaller. I don't tell myself I have to finish everything. I ask: "What's the next most important thing I can do?" Open the document. Record the first five minutes. Send one follow-up. Write one paragraph. Start. Because action creates momentum. You don't have to feel motivated before you begin. The To-Do List I Actually Use I have a really simple Daily To-Do List that helps me do all of this. It's one page. It helps me identify my priorities, organize what needs to happen, and focus on what actually matters that day. And you can download the exact template I use for free. I'll put the link in the show notes. Because you don't need another complicated productivity system. You need to know: What matters today? When am I going to do it? And what can I let go of? That's how I've stayed consistent. Not because I'm motivated every day. Not because I have unlimited time. But because I've learned to focus the limited time I do have on the things that matter most. And sometimes, that's actually the gift of building a business with kids at home. You learn very quickly what deserves your time. I'll see you tomorrow for another episode of Behind the Business.

I've been pretending my ManyChat is set up for about two years now. Here's my actual system: someone comments the keyword, I see it, and then I manually DM them the next day like it's 2016. So when Angelica Pompy came on the show and dropped a plot twist about ManyChat in the first ninety seconds, I was already leaning in.Angelica generates about 65% of her revenue from Instagram. She's not anti-automation. She just knows exactly where it belongs and where it quietly costs you money. She sold a $3,400 VIP day in the DMs with no sales call, no funnel, no link. Just a video message and a few voice notes back and forth. And the story she tells about the event she wanted to attend but never bought a ticket for, because the host never followed up, is the most useful thing I've heard all month about why your launches underperform. We're all so busy automating the top of the funnel that we've automated away the part where someone actually decides to buy. What you'll learn:The exact moment ManyChat stops helping and starts costing you salesWhy a $3,400 offer can close faster in the DMs than through a full email sequenceThe follow-up gap that makes you think nobody's interested when they actually wereHow Angelica labels and tracks leads in Instagram, and why that system breaks after 30 daysHer three-post rotation and why she never sells in every postWhat "success" on social actually looks like when a viral post isn't the goalCHAPTERS02:30 The ManyChat plot twist03:38 When ManyChat actually earns its place04:13 The New York event she refused to automate06:05 A $3,400 VIP day closed in the DMs06:56 The follow-up that lost her sale09:24 Labelling leads before they disappear12:11 The video message that got an instant yes17:18 Where 65% of her revenue comes from20:41 Building a lead system the algorithm can't erase27:56 The three post rotation she teaches>MEET ANGELICA

UX portfolio advice is full of numbers that sound official but aren't backed by anything. This episode kicks off a five part series on UX portfolio myths, starting with the most common one: that you need three to five projects before you can apply.Sarah says the opposite is true. One strong, detailed project beats five surface level ones every time. She backs this up from an interview she did with Alexander Zeh, former Head of Product Design at ManyChat, who said he'd rather see one or two case studies that map directly to the job description than five that walk through every step of the design process without any real depth. The episode shares two specific examples. Laura got hired as a Principal Product Designer in cybersecurity with a single, unfinished feeling project still sitting in Figma slides, and was actually found and reached out to on LinkedIn before she even applied. Leon, laid off after 11 years at the same company and an author of a book on wire-framing, got hired after focusing on just one project instead of trying to rebuild an entire portfolio from scratch. If you've been stalling on applying because you don't have "enough" projects yet, this episode is a direct challenge to that belief, and a reason to ask where that number actually came from in the first place.Topics Discussed✅ Why the three to five project rule is a myth with no real backing, and where it likely came from✅ Why one detailed project beats five surface level ones, and what "confuse and lose" means for a UX portfolio✅ What a former Head of Product Design at ManyChat said he actually wants to see in a portfolio✅ How Laura got hired as a Principal Product Designer with one unfinished project, and was found on LinkedIn without ever applying✅ How Leon got hired after being laid off from an 11 year role, focusing on just one project instead of rebuilding his whole portfolio✅ Why working on your portfolio alone can make you more critical of it than recruiters and hiring managers actually are✅ The question to ask yourself if you believe you need three to five projects, and where to trace that belief back to✅ What Sarah says to look for in UX job descriptions instead of following a generic project countLinks & Resources

In today's episode, Brock Johnson breaks down a 7-step system for making money with a small Instagram account, and it starts with picking the right topic. The goal is finding where your proficiency meets profitability — where a skill you already have overlaps with something people will actually pay for. He walks through how to build a list of every hobby, interest, passion, and skill you have, then validate demand using tools like YouTube, Google Trends, Udemy, Teachable, and Amazon, or simply by posting and listening to how people respond. Lived experience beats everything here, so I explain why the topics you've actually walked through carry the most weight. From there, Brock covers the execution side: optimizing your profile, committing to a minimum of one Reel per day with 80% focused on your topic, and signing up for affiliate programs to start promoting. I get into why listening is the key to uncovering real needs, how building in public compounds trust, and why selling in the DMs converts far better than a bio link. He closes by explaining the follow-to-DM and ManyChat automation approach — a 4-step viewer-to-customer system that lets you have those DM conversations at scale. Watch On YouTube

(Note: This is a RE-RELEASE. It was previously released in March 2026, but not sent to my email list, so you may not have heard it if that's how you access The Coaching Edge!) If marketing feels heavy, awkward, manipulative, or exhausting… it's probably not because you're bad at marketing. It's probably because you're trying to follow a strategy that doesn't match your values. In this episode, I'm pulling back the curtain and sharing what values-based marketing actually looks like inside my own coaching business. I'm walking you through 10 things I don't do — and why. This isn't about being moral or superior. It's about being congruent. Because when your marketing aligns with your personal and professional values, everything gets simpler. Decisions get cleaner. Boundaries get easier. And you stop resenting your own strategy. I share: Why I don't coach in niches I haven't personally lived Why I don't manufacture urgency or use pressure-based launch tactics Why I don't overprice just because I can Why I ditched ManyChat (even though it worked) Why I don't automate intimacy in my DMs Why I don't chase every platform — and how I decide where to show up How I help clients leave platforms that feel ethically misaligned Why I don't promise unrealistic timelines Why I intentionally keep my rooms small Why I refuse to shame people into change We also talk about something I see all the time with coaches right now: Feeling like you have to be on Instagram. Feeling trapped by the algorithm. Feeling uncomfortable with platform ownership and ethics. Feeling like marketing has become performative. You don't owe any platform your presence. You don't have to build your business the way someone else did. You get to choose based on what matters to you. In this episode, I'll walk you through a simple 5-step Values Audit you can use to evaluate your own marketing and make one aligned shift this month. Because the goal isn't to build the biggest coaching business. It's to build one you respect. In this video we sit down with Go, a Romanian born realtor who arrived in the US with two hundred dollars and no connections and has since built one of the largest organizations at EXP Realty with over 1600 agents, more than a million dollars in annual revenue share, and fifteen billion in total sales volume.  We cover her complete agent attraction framework including how she uses ManyChat keyword automations on Instagram to generate inbound leads without cold calling, why knowing your ideal agent avatar down to their age and production level changes everything, how she built a partner website that qualifies agents before they ever get on a call with her, and why she runs a strict no follow up and no show blacklist policy that somehow results in a ninety five percent closing rate.

I was just present with my family. Here's what I learned, and some of it genuinely surprised me.In this episode:What actually happens to your account when you go dark for a weekWhy carousel posts with ManyChat automation kept getting me opt-ins every single day while I was on the beachHow I came back with a bigger email list and more leads than when I leftThe minimum posting cadence every agent should be hitting and why stories are different from feed postsWhy reposting your best content is one of the most underrated moves in social mediaThe case for scheduling posts ahead of time before a trip or breakWhy taking a step back is sometimes the fastest way forward when you're in a creative rutThe honest truth: if you're not consistent yet, this episode is not your excuse to stopDon't be so hard on yourself. And most didn't book a single client from it. Not because giveaways don't work - because the giveaway wasn't built for the right person. When you give away something generic, you attract everyone. And everyone doesn't book. When you give away something so specific that only your ideal client would care, you get a list of pre-qualified leads who already want what you offer. That's the difference. And Christy learned it firsthand when she ran a targeted giveaway for Yosemite couple sessions and had $50K in inquiries hit her inbox inside of a week. Here's what's covered:How to choose a prize that attracts your ideal client instead of freebie-huntersHow to use ManyChat to turn every comment into a direct conversation with a real leadThe follow-up strategy to use after the giveaway ends to close actual bookingsThe most common mistakes that turn a giveaway into noise instead of a lead generatorHow to structure the full funnel from post to booked clientIf you've run a giveaway and heard crickets, this episode is exactly what you needed to hear first.

Sarah, Social Media Manager at ManyChat, has grown the brand's Instagram to over 600K followers as a B2B company — and she did it by leading with value instead of product pitches. In this episode of Beyond Social, Sarah joins hosts Chris Cunningham and Reggie Azevedo to break down the content strategy behind ManyChat's social growth and what it really takes to build an engaged audience in the creator economy. Sarah covers why an 80/20 split between educational content and product promotion is the formula that actually converts, how ManyChat uses comment automations to drive massive engagement (and why their followers trigger keywords even when they're not asked to), and how she manages YouTube and Instagram with a lean but structured team workflow built inside Asana. The conversation also gets into AI and where it actually fits in a social media workflow — as a brainstorming partner and efficiency tool, not a replacement for the creativity that makes content stand out. Sarah also shares her framework for evaluating what's working, from watch time and engagement rate to iterating on hooks that consistently outperform. If you're a social media manager trying to grow a B2B brand without sounding like every other brand account, this episode is packed with actionable perspective.Try Vista Social for FREE todayBook a Demo Follow us on InstagramFollow us on LinkedInFollow us on Youtube

NDAs stop a lot of UX professionals from including their best work in their portfolio, but they might not be the obstacle you think they are.Sarah has spent nearly a decade coaching UX professionals, and one of the questions she gets most often is how to handle NDA-protected work in a portfolio. In this episode, she walks through what NDAs typically do and don't restrict, how to write about protected work without violating your agreement, and why UX recruiters and hiring managers aren't looking for pixel-perfect deliverables (and what they are looking for instead.)Sarah also shares a concrete example of how to frame a confidential project in a way that's compelling, specific, and respectful of any agreements you've signed. If you've been leaving projects out of your portfolio because you weren't sure what you could share, this episode is worth a listen.Topics Discussed✅ What NDAs actually restrict vs. what most people assume they restrict (they're not the same thing)✅ A concrete example of how to write about a confidential project without naming the company, showing screens, or violating any agreements✅ Why UX recruiters and hiring managers care far more about how you think than what the final product looked like✅ Practical ways to include visuals from protected projects without revealing anything proprietary✅ How NDA concerns often uncover the real problem: not knowing how to structure a UX case study✅ How to go back to a former employer and ask the right questions to clarify what your NDA actually allows✅ Why your UX portfolio doesn't have to be a website and how a presentation format can sidestep a lot of NDA concerns entirelyLinks From This Episode:

The Press Release Is Dead — Here's What's Actually Working in PR Right Now | Mady Lanni of Manychat

In this episode, we sit down with Mady Lanni, Senior PR Strategist at Manychat — the social media automation platform powering those viral "comment to get the link" moments you see across Instagram and TikTok every day. Mady's path to PR wasn't linear (criminal justice degree, anyone?), and that outside perspective has shaped a refreshingly sharp, social-first approach to a field that's rapidly changing. She gets real about the slow death of traditional newsrooms and what it means for brands still relying on press releases, why journalists are migrating from X to LinkedIn and how to meet them there, how to move fast on reactive PR without sacrificing brand integrity, and why your most powerful spokespeople might not be your executives — they might be your creators. If you work in PR, marketing, or communications and want to understand where the industry is actually headed, this episode is your roadmap.Key Takeaways:// Social is where the news breaks first — follow it accordingly. Mady starts every morning in her social feed, not her inbox. Trending conversations happen on social before they hit anywhere else, and the PR pros who catch them earliest are the ones who get the reactive coverage. // Newsrooms are shrinking, and modern PR has to evolve with them. Traditional media outlets are downsizing. Journalists are building their own Substacks and newsletters. What "media" means is fundamentally shifting.// LinkedIn is the new Twitter for journalists. Mady sees a clear migration happening: journalists who used to live on X are moving to LinkedIn for connections, relationship-building, and DMs. // Always be able to answer "okay, and so what?" Before pitching any story, Mady asks herself whether the news genuinely matters to anyone outside the marketing team. If the only people excited about it are internal, it's a brand moment, not a PR moment. // Creators are replacing executives as the most credible spokespeople. Journalists and readers are craving authenticity, and polished executive quotes often fall flat. // Press releases are a tool, not a strategy. The future of PR is more creative, more relatable, and more human. Connect with Mady: LinkedIn____Join the MHH Collective! Let me be real with you for a second. I used to be the guy saying "I don't have time to learn another tool." I said the same thing about social media back in 2012, and I paid for it. Every single time I waited, I left money, time, and momentum on the table. So when AI started picking up speed, I made a decision: I was going all in, not as some tech bro, but as a business owner who needed to do more with less and still get home for dinner. In this solo episode, I am giving you my full AI playbook. No fluff, no theory, just 7 tips, tools, and tactics you can actually deploy this week to grow faster, reclaim your time, and build the kind of business that works for your life. Here is why this matters right now. While you are listening to this, your competitor might be running what is essentially a 10-person operation for $30 a month using AI. That gap is opening up fast, and the entrepreneurs who figure this out now are going to be playing a completely different game than everyone else in 12 months. The stats back it up. Entrepreneurs using AI are saving 310 hours a year. That is 13 full days back in your life. Productivity is up 40% on average, and for every $1 invested in AI, businesses are seeing $3.70 in return. This is not a gamble. This is the safest bet you can make right now. Here are the 7 moves I am breaking down in this episode: Tip 1: AI as Your Content Second Brain — Use AI to draft emails, posts, pitches, and outlines, then add your own voice on top. You are the editor, not the writer. Tools: Claude, ChatGPT, Jasper. Tip 2: Automate Customer Communications — Build an AI-powered FAQ sequence for your top 5 customer questions. Set it up once and let it run while you sleep. Tools: Intercom, Manychat, HubSpot AI, Tidio. Tip 3: Market Research & Competitor Intelligence — Use AI to surface your competitor's biggest customer complaints in minutes and build your marketing around every single one. Tools: Perplexity AI, Claude with web search. Tip 4: Automate Operations with AI Agents — Map your most time-consuming weekly task and automate it. Run a one-person company like a 50-person operation. Tools: Zapier AI, Make.com, n8n. Tip 5: AI for Financial Forecasting — Export 12 months of revenue, paste it into Claude, and ask it to analyze trends, find growth opportunities, and flag risks. No CFO needed. Tools: Fathom, Digits, Claude. Tip 6: Multiply Your Sales Output — Before every sales call, paste your prospect's LinkedIn into Claude and get their top challenges and conversation openers ready. Tools: Apollo.io, Clay, Lavender. Tip 7: Build Your Personal AI Operating System — Write a brain dump of your role, goals, and challenges. Paste it into Claude every Monday and use it as your strategic advisor for the week. Tools: Claude, ChatGPT, Notion AI. The biggest truth bomb I can drop on you is this: AI will not replace entrepreneurs who are great at human connection. But it will absolutely replace entrepreneurs who refuse to use it. The Balanced, Fulfilling, Badass life is about working smarter so you can pour your energy into what actually matters, your relationships, your health, and your purpose. AI handles the work a machine can do so you can do the work only you can do. Start with one tip from this episode. Just one. The one that made you think "oh yeah, I need that." Open Claude or ChatGPT in the next 24 hours, paste in your biggest business challenge, and treat it like an advisor who never sleeps and never judges you. You will be surprised at what comes back. Listen to the full episode and get all the tools, resources, and action steps mentioned today over at https://caryjack.com/podcastin/ . And if this one hit home, share it with one person still sleeping on AI. Be the one who wakes them up. That is Happy Hustlin'. Most founders are still treating social media as a vanity channel — a place for likes, views, and followers. And here's the tough truth: if your social media isn't converting into customers, subscribers, or owned audience, you're building on rented land. And that's incredibly risky. I talked to a founder today who's been building his business for a couple of years. He's got Facebook ads running, active social media channels — but he doesn't have a large email list. And that's a massive problem. Because algorithms change, platforms evolve, and accounts get deleted overnight. I've lost a lot of money relying on these platforms back in the day, and I've seen it happen to some of the smartest creators I know. In this episode, I break down why social media should no longer be just about organic reach, how to measure performance properly, and why tools like ManyChat and strong CTAs are essential for e-commerce brands in 2026. Here's what you'll take away: • Why Instagram's new affiliate tagging feature changes the game — and how to track performance from social to sales • The shift from vanity metrics to revenue metrics: leads, conversations, clicks, email subscribers, and purchases • Why social media is rented land but your email list is an owned asset — and the stories of founders who lost everything overnight • How to think about social content as a funnel: top, middle, and bottom of funnel content with intentional CTAs • Why the moment of highest engagement is when you need to capture — not hope they find you again • How ManyChat automates conversations and guides users through your funnel (DMs, keyword triggers, coupon codes, email opt-ins) • The metrics that actually matter in 2026: email subscribers, website clicks, DM conversations, lead magnet opt-ins, and customer acquisition If you're obsessing over views and followers but not building owned assets, this episode will shift how you think about social media — from a reach channel to a conversion channel.
