In this episode of Talk2TheHand, we dive into the fascinating evolution of Sky TV, the network that revolutionised British broadcasting. From its scrappy beginnings in the late 1980s to becoming a powerhouse in sports, entertainment, and news, Sky's journey is one of bold risks, fierce competition, and game-changing innovation. We explore how Rupert Murdoch's ambitious venture transformed from a struggling satellite operation into a household name that reshaped how the UK watches television. We start by revisiting the early days of Sky Television, when it battled for survival against British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB). The infamous "satellite wars" of the early '90s set the stage for Sky's dominance, culminating in the dramatic merger that created BSkyB. We'll unpack the challenges Sky faced—financial losses, technical hurdles, and skepticism from traditional broadcasters—and how clever marketing and strategic partnerships helped turn the tide. Of course, no story about Sky is complete without talking about its groundbreaking acquisition of Premier League broadcasting rights in 1992. This bold move didn't just change the face of British football; it revolutionised sports broadcasting worldwide. We discuss how Sky Sports redefined live sports coverage, introduced new technologies, and created an entirely new viewing culture around football, boxing, cricket, and more. But Sky wasn't just about sports. We delve into the network's expansion into movies, original programming, and news, including the launch of Sky News, which brought 24-hour rolling news coverage to the UK for the first time. From cult classics on Sky One to the rise of Sky Atlantic's prestige dramas, we explore how Sky diversified its content to compete with streaming giants in the digital age. Finally, we reflect on Sky's lasting impact on British media and culture. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, how has Sky adapted to stay relevant? What does its acquisition by Comcast mean for its future? Join us as we unpack the story of Sky TV—a tale of ambition, innovation, and the ever-changing landscape of television. Rockets in the Sky: One Man's Journey of Healing the Loss of a Child with Mark Petruzzi This story is based on a journal Mark began writing in January 2019 through August 2021 to see if he could heal through the terrible loss of his son, Nicholas. He simply needed to see if he could survive. After two years of writing, he realized he could and would survive. Through the people he met, the mediums, the signs, and sightings of Nicholas, his days got a little easier. In Rockets in the Sky Mark shares his struggles with his faith in God, and his grave disappointment in science. How they both let his son Nicholas down, showing no mercy, while he was fighting the last stages of brain cancer. He kept the right people close, and found the right tools, to help regain and strengthen his faith in God, renew his belief in science, and most importantly, reconnect with Nicholas. If you are going through the loss of a loved one, and you're struggling, we hope what is written within these pages can inspire you to move forward with your life. To bring your loved one's spirit with you as you go. In this episode Rachel talks about being her struggle with post natal depression and putting pressure on herself to pretend everything was fine. We discuss the societal pressures put on new mums to have it all together when in reality hormones and sleep deprivation make it almost impossible and how Rachel helps new mums with PND through her Lyrical Light workshops. “I think there's something actually wrong. I'm really, it's not just baby blues already think there's something wrong, because I just felt so ashamed, I thought, oh, it will go, it will be fine. And it took me a really long time and during that time I shot a TV show for sky, made an album, made a music video, which Laila was in, I was a little baby, you know, and did it, did a, a tour and all these kinds of things. So people thought I was this incredible person having it all together, and I was just not, I was just an absolute wreck behind the themes and my family were almost like too worried to talk to me about it cause they, they could see that I was really fragile and putting on a front of “It's great. It's like, you know, everything's fine, I can pretend.” Yeah, so a lot of them, once I'd eventually talked about it, they said, “Yeah, we knew something was wrong, but we just didn't want to push, push you in case it pushed you away.” ABOUT THE GUEST - RACHEL WALKER-MASON Recipient of a prestigious British Citizen Award for contribution to the arts, named “a songwriting expert” by BBC Radio Four's Today Programme and described as “one of the most talented songwriters in the industry” Rachel Walker Mason is a multi-award-winning musician currently writing songs with Grammy winners, Billboard Hot 100 artists, alumni from The Voice UK and American Idol, Emmy winners, Oscar nominees, MOBO Award nominees and Independent Country Music Association Awards winners. We kick off this episode with a fresh co-hort of artist recommendations and documentaries to check out, including Netflix's hit ‘Made You Look: A True Story of Fake Art'. The tale of $80 million worth of art forgeries in New York in the 90s and 00s was truly gripping and pretty shocking. We also discuss writer Hettie Judah's campaign for how the art world can avoid excluding artist parents, and the upcoming sale of Karl Lagerfeld's art collection with Sotheby's. Before we weigh into our Artist Focus, we try and tackle the burgeoning NFT crypto art craze and what it will mean for the art world. Finally, our art crush this episode is American Neo-Conceptual and Feminist artist Jenny Holzer. The main focus of her work is the delivery of words and ideas in public spaces, and she often comments on war time controversies and violence against women.
