Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession, about a young woman, Ellen, who faces a terrifying supernatural entity after her husband travels to Transylvania to conduct business with the enigmatic Count Orlok. As Orlok arrives in her town, he brings a plague of death and terror, forcing Ellen to confront the monstrous vampire and the darkness within herself. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke wanted to create a visually distinct and unsettling experience for Nosferatu, drawing inspiration from F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic, while developing his own unique look. Both he and director Robert Eggers chose a more romantic approach to the film, with a palette of blue and black. Shooting on film with candlelight and moonlight added to the haunting atmosphere. Jarin tested several lenses and the film scanning process to get the grain and color just right. He wanted Nosferatu to feel very composed and controlled. “If it feels claustrophobic, we lean into that,” he says. “How you pan, when you pan, what's the feeling of it, and how you guide the camera operator to execute that pan, all contributes to the overall feeling.” Jared has collaborated with Eggers on all of his films, beginning with the short film, The Tell Tale Heart, The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman. The two share a love of fairy tales and the golden age of illustration. As with most of their films, the two had several months to prep for Nosferatu. They talked through the scenes and shotlisted the movie, while Jarin drew small storyboard thumbnails as a draft for the storyboard artist. “I love the luxury of a long prep time,” says Jarin. “The ideas that you come up with over the course of four months, as opposed to four minutes, are much, much better, you know? Like if I'm just reacting to stuff in the moment, I'm going to go for the easiest thing. But if I have time to come up with an idea and think about how to surprise people, that's a lot more fun.” This meticulous approach extends to post-production, where Jarin even directed the lighting for visual effects. "I enjoy being an obsessive perfectionist," he admits. You can see Nosferatu in theaters and on VOD January 21. Along the way, there's plenty of humor, nostalgia, and even a shout-out to some heartfelt song lyrics.Key Topics Discussed:The Los Angeles fires and the fragility of modern life. How corporate structures create isolation and stifle creativity. The significance of community and tribal connections in raising children.Animism and reconnecting with nature as a spiritual practice.Reflections on the Salem Witch Trials and the evolution of "witch" as a concept.Pagan roots and the myths of Scandinavian and Celtic cultures. The transformative power of rituals, both ancient and modern.Musings on the importance of connection through art, music, and storytelling.
Nosferatu, the new film by Robert Eggers, has been the talk of the movie-town since its release on Christmas Day. With his remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 classic of the same name, Eggers has become the latest auteur to bring Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula to the screen, joining a group that also includes Werner Herzog and Francis Ford Coppola. Like those before him, Eggers makes the tale of the Transylvanian vampire all his own. His Nosferatu is rooted in precise historical detail—as in his earlier films like The Witch (2015) and The Northman (2022)—while also bringing a contemporary psychodramatic sensibility to the characters, particularly Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) and Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp). On today's Podcast, Eggers joins Film Comment Editor Devika Girish to discuss why he wanted to make Dracula “scary” again, the polarizing feminist readings of Nosferatu, and the visual restraint of the film. If you stick it out until the end, you'll also hear Eggers share some of the movies and T.V. shows he counts as Guilty Pleasures—including a reality show featuring a “demonic masc villain.”
In this episode, we look back at one of the best-reviewed graphic novels of 2024: Final Cut by Charles Burns! When Brian, a shy, socially awkward artist, meets Laurie, the soon-to-be star of his new amateur sci-fi horror movie, she quickly becomes his muse, sharing space in his drawings and his mind with the film's giant, pod-spewing aliens. Like him, Laurie is an outsider, wrestling with her own inner demons. But as his obsession with her grows, his grasp on his mental health weakens. This vividly drawn tale of longing – to create and to connect – is part love-triangle teen romance and part love-letter to the science fiction creature features of a bygone era. But is all of that enough to make the cut with that Invasion of the Body Snatchers known as … The Comics Canon? “Music that will bring Beethoven to his knees” We couldn't pass up the chance to record with BOTH visionary director Robert Eggers and composer Robin Carolan, whose period-horror NOSFERATU released on Christmas Day. (Robert confirms for the record it IS — sort of — a Christmas movie.) This interview done remotely, with Robert and Robin together in the same room in London. How Robert's breakout film THE WITCH led to a creative partnership with Robin, a UK-based music producer who had never scored a film before. Why he took 6 weeks to agree to take Robert's Viking epic THE NORTHMAN — and how it proved a trial by fire for his composing career. Robert talks about his history with NOSFERATU going back to high school (once thought of as an imitation of Dracula, but has achieved its own legendary mythological status). How Robert challenged Robin to “bring Beethoven to his knees” in the opening scene, and the decision to craft hypnotic “spirals” and haunting vocals to keep the danger close even when Nosferatu is not on screen. And why Robert's films — dripping with rich mythology — extend the traditional orchestral approach into unsettling, aleatoric music and modern sounds that carry the audience in and out of comfort. With Oliver Stone writing the script, Al Pacino starring and Brian De Palma behind the camera, perhaps it's no wonder that 1983's Scarface has enjoyed a long success. It was met with no shortage of problems during its production though: an unhappy shoot, a change of location, long overruns and the budget soaring. And then Al Pacino had to go to hospital. It's quite the film story. The second half of this episode? Filmmaker Robert Eggers arrives for a long chat about Nosferatu, The Northman, The Witch and more. Learn more about your ad choices. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Our Robert Eggers Retrospective series concludes with The Northman. Revisiting this film after two years, Cam discovers that instead of just being 'Viking Hamlet,' the film is actually a freeform hybrid of Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Hamlet, and Doctor Faustus. Maggie tracks the strands of fate that connect these doomed characters, and the stylistic departures of Eggers' third film. Together, we chart echoes from across every project in his filmography and close with a deep discussion of The Northman as a revenge story. Editor - Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU editor Louise Ford, ACE and writer/director Robert Eggers have reunited once again to take on the not-so-simple task of remaking FW Murnau's horror classic. Considering "Lou's" disdain for cover songs, it was important that this film could stand on its own merits and add something new to the world of cinema. And although she has a few supernatural/horror films to her credit, "Lou" insists she doesn't seek them out. She's just looking for great stories to tell. With NOSFERATU, she told one. NOSFERATU - In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter's new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that's far beyond her control. Louise Ford, ACE NOSFERATU is the fourth feature film Lou has edited for Robert Eggers since their first collaboration in 2008 on his short film, The Tell-Tale Heart . She edited Eggers' The Witch , The Lighthouse , and The Northman . Other films she has edited include Don't Breathe , Wildlife , and three films with the director Cory Finley - Thoroughbreds , Bad Education , and Landscape with Invisible Hand . Aaron and a very special guest were able to attend an early screening of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake on Friday the 13th and lived to the tell the tale! Built in that rigorous period-accurate detail that's become Eggers' signature hallmark and embodied by a stellar cast, this retelling gives more depth to its cast of characters and drives a stake right into the dark heart of the gothic romance that beats at its core. "Brothers, I need advice"Is there an equivalent of dropping the handkerchief today as an indication of interest? I talked to boomers about approaching and they said that women used to drop thousands of hints on them until they got it. They didn't need to learn game, the small talk, how to be charming. "Best I got throughout these years was a few looks my way. I never knew if that was enough of an indication so I never went for it. So I'm wondering what happened to all that? Why should men do all the work of body language reading, taking the risk, learning how to flirt, being the salesman, and selling the product?"I feel like a bitch for not taking the initiative, being a leader, and approaching despite the fear or uncertainty.""Stef, If you go on X i'd happily subscribe there too. (or double my donation)"Is the possible financial incentive that is there not enough?"People might mostly be looking for entertainment, but ideas are still planted, lives still changed."As a philosopher, don't you just go where the people are?"The live spaces are just another platform""How should a young person approach their first romantic relationship? Would it be ideal to search for someone with the goal to build a family in the near future?"If a young man wants to spend his youth building a business till he's 35yo, what will his romantic life look like? When he's 20, a good 20yo woman will not want to wait for 15 years to start a family with him. Then who can he be in a relationship with?""Dear Stef, I feel a little uncomfortable maybe even a little effeminate for lack of a better word, when I say hello to a woman at a bar or a nightclub?"What is the best way to greet a woman i am trying to ask out on a date? Is it ‘Hello', ‘G'day' as is sometimes used here in Australia, I generally like to use this as it sounds the most masculine, ‘How you going?', ‘How's your night?' . Whilst these slight variations may seem insignificant you do know Stef that women are particularly picky about man's choice of words in the wooing process. For example, I recently greeted a young woman at the nightclub by saying ‘Are you Anya Taylor-Joy?'. This woman responded with a face that wasn't enthusiastic to me, it was a look of disinterest and even more than that, it's like her face was saying ‘every second you continue to talk to me is causing me immense discomfort, even pain?' I quickly noticed she wasn't making direct eye contact, she was looking down. I showed her a photo of Anya Taylor-Joy on my phone and she didn't say anything and because she looked so uncomfortable I just left quickly when I noticed how pissed of her facial expression was. This woman was doing seductive dance moves in the nightclub at the top of the nightclub next to me & downstairs too so I thought because of proximity interest signalling that she might be trying to get my attention. Anyhow Stef do you think that it was a good pick up line to compare a woman to a famous actress, especially a young & very beautiful actress? It seems more unique and more of a conversation starter than a generic ‘Hello'. I don't believe this woman was Anya Taylor-Joy because I live in Australia and I believe Anya-Taylor Joy has a boyfriend so I don't think she would randomly be in a nightclub in Australia. This woman looked very youthful but there was slight aging under this woman's eyes so I believe this woman must have been in her mid 20's to late 20's just like Anya-Taylor Joy. I have not seen aging under the actress Anya Taylor-Joy's eyes but maybe it's because she gets all make-up on her in movies. This woman was probably the height of Anya Taylor-Joy too & skinny, she had an identical body like Anya Taylor-Joy and this woman was about my height & I'm almost 6 foot like you Stef, so it may have been Anya-Taylor Joy but I think probably not, she looked strikingly similiar to Anya Taylor-Joy but not identical, I think. Just to show you a photo of Anya Taylor-Joy from the movie ‘The Northman' you know the famous photo where she is glaring at the horizon with those famous big eyes, so you know what woman I'm talking about Stef. Stef I've heard it's not a good idea to compare a woman to another woman, but surely being compared to a famous actress especially Anya Taylor-Joy is an acceptable gesture maybe even a compliment to a woman, would you agree Stef? Have you ever complimented a woman you were trying to woo by complimenting her by saying she looks like a beautiful famous actress or celebrity?"Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!NOW AVAILABLE FOR SUBSCRIBERS: MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING' - AND THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI AND AUDIOBOOK!Also get the Truth About the French Revolution, the interactive multi-lingual philosophy AI trained on thousands of hours of my material, private livestreams, premium call in shows, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2022
