February is National Career and Technical Education Month, an annual public awareness campaign sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education, which encourages us to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements of CTE programs and educators across the nation. Here in Hillsboro, we have much to celebrate as we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for students through our robust CTE and Career and College Pathway programs. In HSD, our 37 CTE programs are an integral part of our larger Career and College Pathway system, which offers 65 programs across the district at the high school level. These programs provide students with hands-on learning experiences that connect them to high-demand careers in more than 13 industry sectors. Additionally, our Career and College Pathway system supports students K-12 through targeted career exploration and postsecondary planning initiatives, ensuring every student is equipped with the knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their future. This month, we proudly recognize the contributions of our 46 dedicated CTE educators, whose pivotal role in shaping our students' futures cannot be overstated. Through engaging, career-connected learning, our educators help bridge the skills gap, foster innovation, and empower students to explore their passions while building a strong foundation for their postsecondary success. Join us in celebrating the incredible work of our CTE educators and the opportunities they provide to students throughout Hillsboro School District! To learn more about CTE and Career & College Pathways in HSD, please visit hsd.k12.or.us/ccp.   Our featured student is Liberty High School senior Ryan Howard. A field trip to the Portland Black College Expo transformed into a life-changing opportunity for Ryan when he joined fellow members of the Black Student Union at the Tony Hopson Sr. Center for Self Enhancement on Thursday, January 16. There, he received an unexpected full-ride scholarship to Langston University - Oklahoma's only Historically Black College and University, and the westernmost public four-year HBCU in the United States. The Expo provided students with a unique opportunity to explore academic options and connect directly with representatives from HBCUs and other colleges. The event featured workshops, financial aid information sessions, and one-on-one interactions with college representatives. Ryan's success story exemplifies the opportunities available through such networking events. Congratulations and way to go, Ryan! You make us Proud to be HSD! First semester ends on Thursday, January 30. There will be no school for all students on Friday, January 31 and Monday, February 3 as teachers prepare grades. School resumes and second semester begins on Tuesday, February 4. Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. In the Hillsboro School District, we are committed to all students graduating career and college ready. Not only is it the district's mission, it's our passion and commitment to students and the broader community. Our school counselors and career and technical education teachers play an integral role in the achievement of this mission each and every day.   National School Counseling Week will be celebrated from February 5th through 9th, 2024 to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems, as well as how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. This year's theme is "School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused." National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  Please celebrate the imperative work of the 64 school counselors, 10 Student Support & Wellness Counselors and 4 Mental Health Care Coordinators in HSD! February is also National Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, sponsored by the Association for Career and Technical Education. Specifically, this month, we recognize the contributions of our CTE teachers and their pivotal role in the development of CTE programming in HSD. These dedicated educators are instrumental in shaping the future of our students. They provide hands-on training, real-world skills, and valuable insights into a variety of career paths, ensuring our students are well-prepared for success in today's job market. CTE teachers not only bridge the skills gap but also inspire innovation and creativity in our classrooms. Their commitment to excellence empowers students to discover their passions and chart a course toward a prosperous future.  Please celebrate the career-connected work of the 45 CTE educators in our 35 Career and Technical Education programs in HSD! Our Featured Event was a visit to Liberty High School's Sustainable Agriculture and Sustainable Design programs on Thursday, January 25th by Oregon's U.S. Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. Students and staff talked to the Congresswoman about their unique classroom spaces and Falcon Farm, and the opportunities they have to grow and sell produce and related products, as well as design and construct items with the environment in mind. A very cool thing they did with her was show her how they turn some of the corn they grow into yummy tortillas! As one student worked on hand-grinding the kernels that had been treated with calcium hydroxide, two others were mixing that fresh masa with a bit of store-bought masa flour, water, and salt to make tortillas. Still other students cooked the tortillas and added some cheese on top then set them out for fellow students and the guests to top with a variety of salsas that students had previously made! See pictures on our website.  Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Please add the address to your “safe sender” list to make sure you always receive the latest issue. Forty-five years ago, President Ford declared February “Black History Month” in a commemorative speech where he urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” At their meeting on Tuesday, January 26th, the Hillsboro School Board read a proclamation recognizing Black History Month. Here is an excerpt: The Hillsboro School District honors and acknowledges the central role of Black Americans in U.S. history. The Hillsboro School District is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and rejects the long history of institutional racism towards Black Americans. The Hillsboro School District pledges to stand against bigotry, intolerance, and hate, and follow the lead set by generations of Black Americans who have courageously led us to the pursuit of equality. The Hillsboro School District has been enriched by the diversity of perspective and experience of our Black community members, who have made valuable and long lasting contributions to our district. Please join us in recognizing and celebrating Black Americans for their many contributions and achievements throughout February and beyond. Learn about Black History Month activities in the Portland area at travelportland.com. Highlights are the Cascade Festival of African Films, offered online free of charge February 5th through March 10th; and the Portland Jazz Festival, with limited in-person concerts as well as live-streamed performances, February 18th through 27th. February is also National Career and Technical Education Month. The Association for Career and Technical Education sponsors the CTE Month awareness campaign each February to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs and educators across the country. We have much to be proud of in our Hillsboro community, as we continue to expand and grow CTE opportunities for our students.

Tiger Talk Podcast by Northeast Mississippi Community College

In this sixty-first (61st) edition of the TigerTalk podcast presented by Northeast Mississippi Community College, host Will Kollmeyer welcomes NEMCC head football coach Greg Davis to the podcast to talk about National Signing Day and how he thought the Tigers did in the recruiting ranks. Davis addresses the needs of offense, defense and special teams. Davis talks about the new recruiting rules in the state that hold coaches to their home counties until the second weekend in November and then the state opens for recruiting and also how those rules allowed for the Tiger football coaches to have a better recruiting period than in the past. Davis also talks about the rule on signings -- teams can only sign what they lose -- and how the Tigers are looking for an open tryout in late February to add to their ranks for the fall. In the second half of the podcast, Associate Vice President for Career Technical Programs and Division Head of Business and Engineering Technology Jason Mattox to the podcast to help celebrate National Career and Technical Education Month. Mattox talks about all the visits that his division has been involved in from the TSA district conference two weeks ago, to helping with the FBLA Northern District Conference last week and this week, helping to host the local Future Farmers of America (FFA) district competition on Friday, February 15. Kollmeyer wraps up the podcast with a new addition to the publication -- an extended version of what is coming up on campus that details events happening on and around the Northeast campus in a daily breakdown. It contains one of the most comprehensive lists of events and happenings on campus -- so if you have an event or happening on campus and want it mentioned on the podcast, please reach out.
