Send us a MessageIn this fourth of a series of planned quarterly episodes on Culture Change RX, host Sue engages with Ben Davis, President and CEO of Glencoe Regional Health, to discuss the ongoing transformational initiatives within his rural healthcare organization. As they mark the completion of the first year of Glencoe's “Experience Initiative,” they explore the concept of the 'whirlwind' in daily operations, the necessity of grit and perseverance in navigating change, and the significance of investing long term in people to foster a culture of growth and excellence in patient care.Investing in people is crucial for organizational success and quality patient care.Data tracking is important to measure progress and motivate change.Leadership development is one of the key focuses and a recent on-site leadership training achieved a high satisfaction rating by the leaders attending. The 'whirlwind' refers to the daily operational challenges that take time and energy and may distract from pro-active improvement and growth activities.Grit and perseverance are essential for successful change management.Adoption of new practices may take time, and at the one-year mark it is estimated that maybe only 10-15% of staff are currently engaged in these new initiatives which is right on target as to what could be expected at this point in the transformation. The journey of transformation is ongoing, requiring continuous effort and commitment.Missed earlier episodes in this series?

Congratulations are in order for the Leadership/Student Council teams at all four HSD comprehensive high schools! Each of them earned the prestigious Gold Council Award at the Oregon Association of Student Councils (OASC) Spring Leadership Conference in late April. The leadership programs begin by setting goals in the fall and actively participating in activities and events throughout the year. In order to receive the award, programs must create and encourage activities that promote inclusivity among all students and provide a series of events that include a variety of different areas/disciplines. Along with involvement in the school, they must also demonstrate that they are gaining valuable leadership and professional skills that they can take with them outside of the classroom. OASC Executive Director Cameron Broome shared: “all four programs are doing incredible things in their individual school communities as well as in the Hillsboro community as a whole. HSD should be very proud of their work and their ability to represent the district so well. As a former student of HSD, it warms my heart to see these schools continually striving for excellence.”Way to go, Century, Glencoe, Hilhi, and Liberty! Your hard work and dedication exemplifies what it means to be Proud to be HSD!Read more on our website at www.hsd.k12.or.us
Joining them were volunteers from Intel and other local manufacturing businesses who led them through the Lunar Lander project. This project involves students using a limited number of materials to design and construct a vessel to keep an “astronaut” - or lollipop - safe when dropped from various heights. Many thanks to Intel and other local businesses, the Portland Metro STEM Partnership, volunteers, and the teachers and other District staff who made this engaging and educational event possible. Just a reminder to our students, staff, families, and broader HSD community: Everyone Belongs in HSD! We support and protect everyone's civil rights and provide safe and welcoming spaces for people of all races, religions, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and ability level. We will continue to educate and support students based on Oregon standards, and we will continue to provide training to staff for differentiating instruction based on student needs.Hot News is produced and emailed to HSD families and staff each week school is in session. Hillsboro School District graduated more students on-time than ever in 2024, with 87.55% of seniors districtwide achieving graduation within four years of their first entry into high school. Graduation rates at two high schools, Century and Glencoe, crested the 90% threshold - a first for Glencoe and just the second time for Century since Oregon began using the cohort calculation method in 2008-09. The District's graduation rate is 5.8 percentage points higher than the state average, and 1.37 percentage points higher than last year's rate of 86.18%. Sizable gains were made in the focal group categories of Migrant and Students Experiencing Poverty, with overall increases of 7.38 and 7.03 percentage points, respectively. Meanwhile, the gap between all students and Hispanic/Latino students has shrunk to just 1.31 percentage points, which aligns with the District's strategic priority to help students achieve success that is not predictable or predetermined by their race, ethnicity, or any other identities. HSD's Asian American and Pacific Islander family engagement committee hosted the event, which ushered in the Year of the Snake in style with delicious food from Vivi's Vietnamese Noodle House, exciting entertainment, kids activities, and much more! Many thanks to everyone who came together in community to take part in the festivities. We know there is a lot of fear and confusion in our community and across the nation right now with regard to immigration, race and ethnicity, gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation, among other concerns. Students, staff, and families are asking about our position on these topics and whether or not HSD is still a safe place for them. The short answer is YES! At their meeting on Tuesday, January 28, the Hillsboro School Board adopted a Safe and Welcoming Schools resolution, which anchors to federal law, Supreme Court precedent, state law, and our own policies and procedures for keeping students safe. Was the last clan battle that which happened at Altimarlach in 1680 or the battle of Mulroy in 1688? In this two-part episode I consider the events that lead up to the battle of Mulroy and the different perspectives one could take in deciding if it was the last clan battle. The Highland clans of Mackintosh and MacDonnell of Keppoch take center stage with supporting performances by the MacDonald branches of Glencoe, Glengarry, maybe clan Ranald, Cameron (MacMartin), Grant, and MacPherson. Several notable personalities also make an appearance, including Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, Kenneth Mackenzie of Suddie, chief Lachlan Mackintosh, and the now famous but then young and inexperienced Donald MacBane. A key component of our 2023-2027 Strategic Plan is the incorporation of constituent voice. We have worked hard to ensure opportunities to share thoughts and feedback are varied, meaningful, and involve intentional outreach to identified focal groups and historically underserved populations. This includes our annual student survey in the spring, meetings with our parent advisory committees, one-on-one or small group conversations with families and/or students, superintendent focus group chats with high school students, and more. In both the planning year and Year 1 of the Strategic Plan, we also offered a survey to all families, community members, and staff. This survey was almost identical to the student survey and was approximately 25 questions long. Heading into this year, we took a closer look at that survey and brainstormed ways to make it more relevant and accessible to those completing it, in hopes that it would generate higher participation and more robust, actionable feedback for staff overseeing implementation. What we came up with is a survey that is just 7 questions long! We truly hope all of our families, community members, and staff will take a few minutes to complete the survey and provide their honest feedback by Friday, February 14. Themes and common questions/concerns will be pulled from the responses and used to shape our Year 3 Strategic Plan improvement actions, as well as our Integrated Guidance Plan, which includes our Student Investment Account, High School Success, and Early Literacy Plans. Our featured students are from Glencoe's Leadership class. On Saturday, December 21, Glencoe High School's lobby was once again transformed into a one-stop shop for students and families in the Glencoe feeder group who needed a little help for the holidays. This has become a favorite annual tradition of Glencoe leadership students and their advisor, Tom Stephens. Together, they staged new toys, games, and stuffed animals; as well as clothing, non-perishable food, and even Christmas trees for families to choose from. At designated times, families came into the shop, selected what they needed, and had the option of enjoying hot cocoa as students wrapped their presents. The following Monday, students delivered items to families who weren't able to make it to the shop. In all, more than 134 families representing more than 400 children were served through this innovative and generous program. To the leadership students, Mr. Stephens, and everyone whose donations made the event possible, we say a heartfelt thank you! You make us Proud to be HSD! There will be no school for all students on Monday, January 20, in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. School resumes on Tuesday, January 21. Travel with us as we venture to Scotland in the Summer. The sun is out late, the temperature is warm (for Scotland), and the grass is so so green. In this return to Scotland, I venture with Keely, my friend who is also a post-grad candidate for Public History and Cultural Heritage. We book another tour with Rabbie's to venture into the West Highlands, with our base of operations in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. From driving through Glencoe, swimming in Caribbean-blue waters on the Isle of Iona, and watching puffins fly on the Isle of Staffa, we got a wonderfully raw experience with the magic of mother nature. But of course... shenanigans ensue including losing the keys to our van on a ferry and said van breaking down 4 hours from Edinburgh leaving us stranded... there is no shortage of hijinks during this trip, that's for sure! Her experiences offer valuable insights into navigating life's toughest challenges and finding purpose in the face of adversity. We delve into topics that will resonate with anyone on a journey of self-healing, including the expectations we place on family, especially parents, and the often unspoken disappointment that arises when we realize they aren't perfect. We also discuss her experience coming out to her family, especially within a Catholic background, and the courage it took to seek acceptance and love on her own terms. Sarah speaks to the importance of community and interdependence, emphasizing that we're not meant to carry our burdens alone. But what if you truly are alone, without family or close support? Sarah offers compassionate guidance on how to find a supportive community, even when starting from scratch, reminding us that connection is fundamental to healing and personal fulfillment. In 1688 the Stuart King James II was ousted from the throne by his daughter Mary and her husband William of Orange, in what is called the Glorious Revolution. This momentous change would set in motion decades of unrest across the British Isles, as the supporters of James Stuart; his son the ‘Old Pretender' James, and his flamboyant grandson, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie', both exiled in France and Italy, sought to restore them to the throne of Britain. In Scotland especially, the hereditary home of the Stuarts, rebellion was constantly brewing amongst the Scottish clans, where demands by the English king for them to bend the knee would result in the bloody massacre of Glencoe…finally, with time passing and the momentum of the Stuart cause fading, the Young Pretender; Bonnie Prince Charlie, took up his family's struggle and sailed to Scotland to reclaim his father's crown….the storm clouds of revolt were brewing. What would be Scotland's fate, and indeed that of Britain? In today's episode, William and Anita are joined by historian Jacqueline Riding to discuss the Jacobites and their fight to restore the Stuarts to the British throne, in the build up to the cataclysmic Battle of Culloden… To fill out the survey: survey.empirepoduk.com To buy William's book: https://coles-books.co.uk/the-golden-road-by-william-dalrymple-signed-edition Twitter: @Empirepoduk Email: empirepoduk@gmail.com Goalhangerpodcasts.com Assistant Producer: Tabby Syrett Producer: Callum Hill Exec Producer: Neil Fearn Learn more about your ad choices.
