In this week's episode of Sexual Assault Survivor Stories, I'm honored to welcome someone whose name has become synonymous with advocacy, leadership, and meaningful systemic change. Rita Smith has spent more than four decades reshaping how this country understands, responds to, and prevents violence against women. From her grassroots beginnings to her national-level impact, Rita has consistently shown up for survivors with a rare blend of humility, strength, and deep psychological insight. Rita's work reaches across some of the largest platforms in the nation. She has served as Senior Advisor to the National Football League for more than 11 years, guiding the NFL's policies, training, and cultural shifts around domestic violence and sexual assault. As Vice President of External Relations for DomesticShelters.org, she strengthens community programs around the country, builds partnerships, supports frontline advocates, and provides a steady, trusted voice to the national media. She's also spent years consulting for organizations nationwide and serves on the board of Restoration Project International, supporting victims of sex trafficking with compassion and expertise. But what stands out most in our conversation today isn't just Rita's résumé—it's the heart behind the work. She brings decades of crisis intervention experience, conflict-resolution skill, and trauma-informed understanding into this discussion. You'll hear the wisdom of someone who has sat with survivors, challenged institutions, trained leaders, and refused to accept the status quo when it harms those who need protection most. Rita's clarity, steadiness, and lived commitment to justice remind us that change doesn't come from policy alone—it comes from people willing to keep showing up, year after year. This episode is a powerful reminder of what it looks like when advocacy meets integrity. Whether you're a survivor, a professional in this field, or someone trying to understand how we build safer communities, Rita Smith's voice will leave you thinking differently about the systems around us—and inspired to push them toward something better. Send us a textA four-day work week is not a gimmick. Done right, it can reduce burnout, stabilize output, and help you keep great people. Our guest today shares that after two years of doing a 4-day work week model, they saw a 46% increase in staff morale and wellbeing. This is only one of the many amazing benefits Imagine Canada has seen! In this episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, Maria Rio sits down with Jodene Baker, Vice President of Research, Advocacy and External Relations at Imagine Canada. Jodene oversees national research and policy efforts supporting Canada's nonprofit sector. Imagine Canada also builds tools like Grant Connect and advocates federally to strengthen the sector. Maria and Jodene discuss the challenges of starting, decent work practices, and how to measure the unmeasurable. 4-Day Work Week for Nonprofits - The Highlights: Why try a four-day week in the first place The sector is stretched: lower average pay, rising demand, and chronic burnout. Imagine Canada saw the same internal pressures and chose to test a four-day week to improve staff wellbeing and retention while holding impact. Their model is 100 percent pay, 80 percent time, 100 percent outcomes Imagine Canada works Monday to Thursday and closes Fridays. There is no pay cut and no compressed schedule. This pilot began in January 2023 and is now extended through 2026. It remains a pilot so they can keep measuring and adjust if needed. Preparation made the shift workable They joined the Four Day Week Global pilot, created a cross-functional staff group, set clear goals, and defined success metrics. They also cleaned up calendars: Audited and shortened meetings Made Monday afternoons meeting-free internally Blocked Fridays well in advance to build the habit Measured results: wellbeing up, sick days down, impact stable They track roughly 50 metrics across wellbeing, productivity, and outputs. Recruitment and retention improved Candidates now cite the four-day week as a reason to apply. Staff attrition has dropped exponentially.

In this episode of the Today's Conveyancer Podcast host David Opie is joined by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers' Director of Strategy and External Relations to discuss the regulator's view of the big issues facing conveyancing. The podcast was initially recorded in the days before the government's home buying and selling reforms consultation with much of the discussion focussing on the risks identified in the CLC's annual Risk Agenda. A key topic is the changing nature of client accounts, prompted by the Solicitors Regulation Authority's consultation. Despite the SRA's confirmation it is not likely to change the operation of client account in the short term, Stephen warns firms not to rely on the current model indefinitely. He confirms the CLC has no immediate plans to mandate alternatives but recognises reduced risk of funds interception in a world where solicitors and conveyancers complete fewer bank transfers; and highlights the current discussions on redirecting interest earned on client accounts toward legal aid funding as in other jurisdictions. Stephen also tackles the recent Mazur litigation ruling which redefines the role of unqualified individuals conducting reserved legal activities. Stephen clarifies that the ruling pertains strictly to litigation and does not affect conveyancing. He is clear, although concedes the wording in the legislation isn't(!), under the Legal Services Act 2007, conveyancing and probate may be performed by non-qualified staff under supervision, a model widely used and fully compliant with current legislation. The conversation covers post-completion, complaints handling, cryptocurrency and AML, auction houses and the future of conveyancing; observing that government legislation is paving the way for initiatives like digital ID verification, conditional contracts, and shared data frameworks; the CLC remains engaged with industry stakeholders to ensure that regulatory infrastructure supports this transformation while safeguarding consumers. The podcast swerves into a brief segue regarding the home buying and selling consultation and separate material information consultation, a whole podcast in itself. Stephen says the CLC welcomes the move which could bring a level of mandation to the process and start to see pressure from home movers through the adoption of material information and service comparisons outlined in the consultation. The Today's Conveyancer podcast can be found on your preferred podcast provider and also at www.todaysconveyancer.co.uk. Player Development is not optional—it's essential. In this episode of The Player Development Pod, I break down the three main areas where a Player Development professional transforms a program:Players — creating belonging and situational awareness so every athlete feels valued.Program & Staff — supporting academics and recruiting so coaches can focus on coaching.External Relations — strengthening trust with families and alumni to build lasting culture.I share real stories from my time at Houston, Kansas, and Baylor, including how one recruiting adjustment helped land a future first-round draft pick, and how simple situational awareness calmed a nervous freshman before his first game.

For Podcast 18, August 2025, Seabed 2030 Head of Partnerships Steve Hall brings an update from our recent attendance at SubOptic 2025, a conference and trade show of the global subsea cables industry. We were invited by Alcatel Submarine Networks, one of the big three subsea cables companies, owned by the French state and Nokia. Alcatel are enthusiastic contributers to the work of the UN Ocean Decade Corporate Data Group. The public don't always realise that the vast majority of international internet traffic is carried on thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable laid across the ocean floor, not bounced off satellites. As such, the industry is one of the few that conducts bathymetric measurements at global scale - albeit along narrow tracks - and so is an essential source of new, and legacy, data for Seabed 2030 & GEBCO. Indeed from the earliest days of GEBCO, bathymetry supplied by cable layers has formed an important source of data. In this episode we also introduce our Head of External Relations, Pegah Souri - she has been associated with the project for six years and is a key person for ensuring that the outside world knows about our work. In the second part of the podcast, Steve runs through the topics covered in his presentation to industry at SubOptic, and finishes with a preview of the imminent publication of the Seabed Mapping Special Edition of the Marine Technology Society and Society for Underwater Technology journal, Volume 59 Number 2.Find out more about Seabed 2030 at www.seabed2030.org, contact the editor the podcast Steve Hall here, or Pegah Souri here. Now “retired” (whatever that means), Nevin is the former Chief Content Officer and Head of Retirement Research for the American Retirement Association. One of the retirement industry's most prolific writers, these days he's “retired”, which means he writes less, but continues to keep his eye on developments in, and threats to, the nation's private retirement system. He's the Chief Advisor Strategist at Endeavor Retirement, and he's also the “Nevin” in the Nevin & Fred podcast (along with renowned ERISA attorney Fred Reish), offering irreverent, but relevant perspectives on the critical issues confronting plan sponsors, advisors, and retirement industry professionals. Prior to his time at the ARA, he was the Employee Benefits Research Institute's Director of Education and External Relations, Co-Director of EBRI's Center for Research on Retirement Income, and Director of the American Savings Education Council, and prior to that, spent a dozen years as Global Editor-in-Chief of PLANSPONSOR magazine and PLANSPONSOR.com, as well as PLANADVISER and PLANSPONSOR Europe magazines. He was the originator, creator, writer, and publisher of PLANSPONSOR.com's NewsDash. He began his retirement services career at Northern Trust in Chicago, where he later served in a variety of management roles, culminating in the development of a proprietary recordkeeping platform, and at Wachovia Bank, leading their defined contribution/recordkeeping businesses. In this episode, Eric and Nevin Adams discuss:Retirement income requires tailored solutions.Fiduciary roles shift after adoption.Default options remain a challenge.Adoption will be gradual and cautious.Key Takeaways:There's a wide range of income options beyond annuities, but each plan should carefully assess its participants' needs before implementing anything.Choosing to offer a retirement income option begins as a settlor decision, but once implemented, it becomes a fiduciary duty to select the specific solution, to monitor, and manage.Auto-enrolling participants into lifetime income products is complex—many don't fully grasp the trade-offs, and surveys show mixed interest.Due to regulatory uncertainty and logistical hurdles, most plan sponsors are expected to move conservatively, guided by education and expert consultation.“How are we making default lifetime income assumptions about people on a generic basis without some of that nuance? Aren't you, almost by definition, creating a product that's not really going to fit people anyway?” - Nevin AdamsConnect with Nevin Adams:Website: https://nevinandfred.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nevinadams/ Connect with Eric Dyson: Website: https://90northllc.com/Phone: 940-248-4800Email: contact@90northllc.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/401kguy/ The information and content of this podcast are general in nature and are provided solely for educational and informational purposes. In this episode, we speak with Matteo Mirolo, Director of Strategy & External Relations at Contrails.org, a science-led nonprofit initiative aimed at transforming contrail research into practical climate action. Mirolo discusses:The substantial climate impact of contrails, which are responsible for 1-2% of human-caused global warming and have roughly the same warming effect as all aviation CO2 emissions since the jet age.The concentrated nature of the problem, with just 5% of flights causing about 80% of aviation's contrail warming effect, primarily over Europe, North America, and the North Atlantic.Contrails.org's three-pillar approach focusing on science (improving understanding of contrail impacts), technology (developing open-source tools and protocols), and adoption (raising awareness and fostering incentives). The cost-effectiveness of contrail mitigation compared to other decarbonisation options, with studies suggesting only 0.11% extra fuel burn across airline fleets. The vision for seamless integration into airline operations, where contrail avoidance becomes as routine as avoiding turbulence or adverse weather.Contrails.org seeks to be an open, collaborative space, with Mirolo likening it to “a tent under which people can put their furniture.” Its goal is to address the contrail issue through collective effort, recognising that effective management requires coordination across the aviation sector. If you LOVED this episode, you'll also love the conversation we had with Alejandra Martín Frías, Head of Sustainability Research at FLIGHTKEYS, who shared insights into the company's research on contrail avoidance.
