Psalm 145:3, "Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom!" God is pure Being--independent, infinite, and unchangeable. Before the mountains were born, before man was formed from the dust, before angels lifted their voices in praise--God was. He had no beginning, and He shall have no end. He exists of Himself, by Himself, and for Himself. He is the eternal I AM! To contemplate God's nature is to approach a blazing glory that no creature can fully endure. Yet He has revealed Himself--not exhaustively, but truly--in His Word. What He makes known is sufficient to bow our hearts in reverent awe. He is spirit, not limited by body or bounds. (John 4:24) He is life itself, the fountain of all existence. He is immutable: "I the Lord do not change!" (Malachi 3:6) Nothing can add to Him, improve Him, or diminish Him. He is eternally perfect in all His being. All of His attributes--His wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth--are not something He has, but the very essence of who He is. His justice is holy, His love is wise, His mercy is sovereign. Each attribute is harmoniously one with all the rest, perfectly united in His glorious essence. Though we are finite and fallen, the regenerate soul delights in the nature of God. The more we see Him as He is, the more we see ourselves as we are: a mixture of dust and sin. And yet, wonder of wonders, this infinite God condescends to be known, to be worshiped, and to be loved by His creatures. Let us then draw near with reverence and joy, remembering that to know God rightly is life eternal. (John 17:3) Let us worship Him not as a vague power, but as the living, personal, triune God--Fath
17By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19We love because he first loved us. 20If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannota love God whom he has not seen. 21And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

During today's conversation on Back Porch Theology we're wrapping up a 3-part series on Zephaniah in a series we called “The Theology of Compassionate Consequences”. It may initially sound like an oxymoron – a contradiction in terms - to pair the words “compassionate” and “consequences” together, kind of like “jumbo shrimp” or “act naturally” or “climb down”. It begs the question, “If God really is unconditionally loving, then why do we have to suffer consequences at all?” Here's the deal y'all, God's parameters aren't punitive or pejorative…they are always promissory and protective. Psalm 16:5 says it best, “His boundary lines for me have fallen in pleasant places.” Alli, Dr. Howard & I are so happy you've chosen to carve out this time to hang out on the porch with us, please grab a cup of coffee and your Bible, then feel free to lean back and put your feet up. This is a safe place to lean further into the unconditional love of our Creator Redeemer. Lisa Harper's Luke Study is available here.

Grief has a way of shaking what we believe about God—but what if it also reveals His true nature? In part two of our series on C.S. Lewis and loss, Brandon explores how Lewis wrestled with the character of God after the death of his wife. Is God distant in our pain, or does suffering draw us deeper into His love? Can we trust a God who allows us to experience pain? Is it possible that grief might shape our relationship with Him? Join us as we continue our journey through Lewis’ reflections and uncover the ways loss can lead us to a clearer, truer view of God. Episode Resources:A Grief Observed by C.S. *Listen to the Show notes and podcast transcript with this multi-language player. INTRODUCTION:Christ came to earth to reveal the Father. When He taught us to pray, He started out with “our Father,” revealing the point that God is our Father also. (Matthew 6:9) But He also expressed that the Father directs our attention to Jesus, whom He sent. (John 6:29) Christ is showing that their relationship was a two-way street. When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him and the Father's voice proclaimed, “You are My beloved Son, in you I am well-pleased.” (Luke 3:22) Thus, we have the third being of God—the Holy Spirit. When Christ sent the Holy Spirit to those gathered during Pentecost, once again He was opening the door for us to know another aspect of God who is available to us. (Acts 2:4)SHOW NOTES: Jesus Christ must be real to us by revelation. The Words which Christ spoke were not words from man, but they came from the Father. When we seek the wisdom of the Father, He reveals His kind intention toward us. Whether we pray to Christ, or our Father, or we ask of the Holy Spirit to lead and teach, we can have the Truth revealed to us. The Spirit writes the Word of God on human hearts. He makes known the mystery of His will as we earnestly seek Him.QUOTATIONS: Jesus said to Peter, “Flesh and blood did not reveal that to you. That was a revelation from My Father.” He who has the Son has the Father, and he who does not have the Son, does not have the Father. No one knows the Father except the Son, and whomever the Son wills to reveal Him, and no one knows the Son except the Father. It is a back and forth relationship, so precious and so deep that it has to live for us. If you started out walking in Christ's footsteps and you continue in those footsteps, each step we take in His footsteps brings us closer to the Father. We're following after the pattern of the Son of God, the firstborn Son. We're learning to become sons, and as sons, we should be reflecting and painting this beautiful picture of the Son, Christ Jesus. The Father and Christ work together in a oneness that brings all these wonderful things that the Scriptures reveal to us. Whether you're speaking to the Holy Spirit, the Lord Jesus Christ, or the Heavenly Father, It's all the triune nature of God.REFERENCES:Matthew 16:15-17 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal...
Does worldview matter? Do basic foundational doctrines really matter in the lives of Christians? A new study from Barna shows that only 11 percent of American adults believe in the doctrine of the Trinity, while 16 percent of self-proclaimed Christians hold to it. The number of Gen Z's who believe in the Trinity comes in at only 8 percent. The doctrine of the Trinity has been largely neglected in churches today in favor of more "relevant" topics, the 20-minute homily, and the 40-minute music program. But not being grounded in the most basic doctrines makes one susceptible to false teachers. So how do we overcome this as we raise the next generation? First, check the foundations and worldview of everything you and your children participate in. Give your children a proper worldview as you teach them, and then instruct them on how to cast down every imagination and every high thing that exalts itself above Christ. This program includes:1. The World View in 5 Minutes with Adam McManus (Three survivors of Alaskan plane crash rescued; Muslim militants kill 9 in Congo, Africa; King Charles hospitalized from cancer treatment side effects)2. This week, we’re starting a new series called “Glimpses of Glory,” which is focused on the glory of God. The roots of this series are found in a previous series we completed last called “Covenant Living.” We encourage you to watch or listen to these messages if you have not done so. Exodus 33:11-23 served as the basis for that series, and we’re revisiting it for this series, too. There are many different passages in the Bible where God revealed His glory to people and many expressions of that glory, but churches don’t talk about it much because it’s difficult to understand and cannot be controlled. With this series, Pastor John is attempting to restore a biblical understanding and appreciation of God’s glory, starting with a message called “The Name and Nature of God.”

Morning Worship Sermon with Rev. Bud Hance Scripture reference Romans 2:4-11 4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: 7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; 8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, 9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; 10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.

On Sunday morning, we continued in Genesis 12 by looking at verses 1-9. When the Lord calls Abram, he isn't young and fit for the job, nor would we consider him a likely candidate. What makes him qualified? Nothing- but the Lord chose Abram. He will be blessed, great, and a blessing for all the families of the earth. Remember that our salvation, Jesus, descends from Abram. This fulfilled promise is the grace of God. We hope this sermon blesses you in the Lord. Originally February 2nd, 2025. Hank Atchison. Covenant Church. Tuscaloosa, AL.
In this episode, we discuss the nature of God, “who” God is, beginning with God the Father. Our reading explains how the Creed begins with God the Father because he is the first Divine Person of the most Holy Trinity. God is one Divine Being made up of three persons, and his identity is a deep mystery. Fr. Mike explains that God is a single ‘what' made up of three ‘who's.' Despite this mystery, God is not an anonymous force. He has revealed himself to us by making his name known to us, and he has thus made himself accessible. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 198-204. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/ciy Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

In honor of the 420 episode, I decided to smoke a nice strong joint for this one while recording. And the topic pairs perfectly with weed: a philosophical discussion on the nature of life. Why are we here and what is the point of life? We'll summarize Friedrich Nietzsche's thoughts on nihilism, Albert Camus's musings on absurdism, and Jean-Paul Sartre's views on existentialism. Is there any real point to our lives? Does that matter? If there's no higher power watching over us or judging us, why even bother to try and be decent people? Why care at all about our fates?
