Die Sandplatzsaison ist in Europa gestartet und das war für Florian Heer von tennis-tourtalk.com natürlich die Gelegenheit, mal wieder auf Reisen zu gehen und ein weiteres Turnier zu besuchen. Florian reiste nach Murcia und dieses Turnier lieferte Geschichten en masse. Alcaraz Garfia sorgt für Euphorie Die größte Geschichte war wohl die von Carlos Alcaraz Garfia. Er ist erst 15 Jahre alt, muss sich aber jetzt schon Vergleichen mit Rafael Nadal stellen. Riesiges Talent hat er, aber Florian als auch Andreas wollen die Kirche hier noch ein wenig im Dorf lassen. Alcaraz Garfia sorgte aber für den stimmungstechnischen Höhepunkt der letzten Woche. Sein Viertelfinale gegen den Deutschen Rudi Molleker war ein absolutes Highlight. Beide spielten gutes Tennis, der Platz war ausverkauft, die Stimmung prächtig. Der "Veteran" Molleker behielt am Ende die Oberhand. Nicolas Almagro trat bei diesem Turnier zurück. Von Rückenleiden geplagt, konnte er in den letzten Monaten kaum noch spielen und nutzte das Turnier in seiner Heimatstadt, um ein letztes Mal aufzuschlagen. Natürlich nutzte Florian die Möglichkeit, Stimmen zu sammeln. Er sprach mit dem Turniersieger Ricardo Carballes Baena (auf Spanisch!), mit dem Finalisten Mikael Ymer, dem Halbfinalisten Kimmer Coppejans und dem Doppelsieger Marcus Daniell. Brown gewinnt überraschend auf Sand Zusätzlich zu dem Turnier in Murcia gab es in den letzten Wochen auch noch andere berichtenswerte Ereignisse. Dustin Brown gewann wie aus dem Nichts das Challenger in Sophia Antipolis, Kevin Krawietz und Andreas Mies waren in Marbella erfolgreich. Alexander Bublik gewann das Turnier in Monterrey und sorgte mit diesem Ergebnis dafür, dass er der letzte Spieler war, der ins Hauptfeld bei den French Open einzieht. James Waterson reports the week’s news for Tennis Now. Tomas Berdych, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mardy Fish qualified for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after their competitors, Nicolas Almagro, Janko Tipsarevic and Gilles Simon lost before the third round. Berdych defeated Andy Murray to reach the semifinals in Paris, and Roger Federer won his 800th career ATP match when he beat Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5. If Federer wins the tournament, he would reclaim his No. 3 ranking from Murray. The WTA announced it set new records in attendance at its year-end Championships, and it saw a significant increase in web traffic during the tournament. Finally, nine of the top 10 players on the WTA tour are from different countries, which sets a new record.
James Waterson reports on the weeks tennis news. Most of the top women returned to action at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, where World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki was looking to defend her title. But she fell in the third round, while US Open champion Samantha Stosur was beaten by Maria Kirilenko in the second round. Meanwhile, Donald Young, Gael Monfils and Andy Murray made the final four at the Thailand Open, and Kei Nishikori upset Nicolas Almagro in Malaysia. On the other side of the world, Novak Djokovic made a UNICEF visit to a Serbian pre-school.

American teenager Christina McHale upset eighth-seeded Marion Bartoli 7-6 (2), 6-2, and another American, Irina Falconi, beat Wimbledon quarterfinalist Dominika Cibulkova in three sets. Another American teen, Jack Sock, won his first ever match at the US Open when he took down Marc Giquel in four sets. Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets, and Julien Benneteau upset 10th-seeded Nicolas Almagro in straight sets.

Gilles Simon won his second title of the year after he beat Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at the German Tennis Championships in Hamburg. Mardy Fish fought off two match points to beat John Isner to defend his title in Atlanta, and Vera Zvonareva beat fellow Russian Ksenia Pervak to take the Baku Cup in Azerbaijan.
