In this engaging episode of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into a fascinating mix of topics, blending personal anecdotes, cultural insights, and a shared love for learning. The hosts open the episode with an in-depth discussion of Jennifer Gerlach LCSW's Psychology Today article, “Is It Possible to Heal Trauma in Therapy?” They thoughtfully examine the article's key points, weaving in examples from their own lives to illustrate the practical applications of Gerlach's insights. This conversation also revisits Gerlach's earlier article, “What To Do When You Don't Feel Up To Anything,” which was featured in Episode 375. The duo reflects on the evolving nature of healing and the role therapy plays in navigating life's challenges. Professor Aubrey shares her experience attending a Sofi Tukker concert. Despite not being overly familiar with the music beforehand, she describes being swept up by the energy and vibrancy of the performance. Her vivid recounting captures the infectious joy of discovering new music in a live setting, leaving listeners curious about exploring Sofi Tukker's unique sound. Tim the Nerd takes the spotlight to discuss a compelling documentary about Billie Jean King that he watched on Max. Drawing from his prior knowledge and what he learned from the film, Tim the Nerd celebrates King's groundbreaking contributions to women's tennis and her influence on sports history. He highlights King's efforts to elevate women's tennis to a global stage, her role in World Team Tennis, and the inspiration behind Elton John's song “Philadelphia Freedom.” Tim also revisits the iconic “Battle of the Sexes” match between King and Bobby Riggs, discussing its cultural impact and King's enduring legacy as a champion for equality. He's labelled as the “winningest coach in college sports history,” sporting a 252-match winning streak over 13 years, a 507-29 all-time record, and winning 17 NCAA Championship titles as head coach at Trinity College. Paul systematically brought together great players from around the world and demonstrated how teammates from diverse cultures can unite to build a winning culture and team. And his experience is also enriched by having coached the US National Team in squash (17 years) as well as World Team Tennis with Billie Jean King. To add to his list of accomplishments, he's also co-author with James Zug of the book, "Run to the Roar, Coaching to Overcome Fear," (published by Penguin) and the subject of a 2013 documentary film, All In, by Marc DiBenedetto. In this conversation, we discuss his philosophy of coaching, how he's been guided by his personal purpose, the best ways to train, motivate and guide a team of individual athletes to bring out their best. We also look at the role of empathy in coaching, how to learn, improve and perform under stress, and the way to get the best out of everyone. Coach Paul Assaiante is the winningest coach in college sports history. For 30 years until announcing his retirement at the end of this season, Coach led the Trinity College squash program to 17 national championships and 20 finals appearances in the last 25 years, including at one point winning 252 straight matches and 13 straight national titles. In his final season, Trinity's squash team entered the national championships with the #6 seed and rode an almost fairy tale bookend to Coach's career to the finals and within a single point of an 18th national title. Paul also coached the USA National Team in squash for 17 years, Trinity's men's tennis squad for 24 years, and World Team Tennis with Billie Jean King in its heyday. In 2010, he authored Run to the Roar: Coaching to Overcome Fear, one of my favorite books on sports and leadership. Perhaps what is most fascinating about the soft-spoken Coach is he knew nothing about squash when he got his first coaching job. His true expertise is in managing, motivating, and inspiring a diverse group of players to be the best version of themselves. Our conversation covers Coach Paul's path and a career's worth of wisdom about preparation, emotional regulation, managing high performing individuals on a team, diversity, facing fear, learning to win and lose, and applying the lessons to the business world and next generation. Our "tour" of lost pro sports venues continues with another stop in the Keystone State, this time for a loving look back at the life and times of Pittsburgh's legendary Civic Arena - aka "The Igloo" - with Steel City native Dave Finoli (editor, "Pittsburgh's Civic Arena: Stories from the Igloo").   Originally constructed in 1961 for the city's Civic Light Opera, the Arena was an ahead-of-its-time architectural marvel - distinctively adorned by a massive 3,000-ton retractable steel-roof dome that was world's first of its kind - making not just an attractive venue for music and entertainment, but big-time sports of all kinds.   Over time, the Igloo became synonymous with its longest-running tenant - the NHL's Penguins - who became the building's main occupant as an expansion franchise in 1967, and saw three (of its total five) Stanley Cup title runs.   But, of course, we remember the other teams that also called the Civic Arena home - including: basketball's Rens, Pipers & Condors; World Team Tennis' Triangles; soccer's Spirit & Stingers; arena football's Gladiators; lacrosse's Bulls & CrosseFire; and even roller hockey's oft-forgotten Phantoms.   And don't forget Dr. J's Pisces too!

Over the past 14 years, Marc Lucero has emerged as one of the preeminent coaches for budding stars. He worked for the USTA from 2008-2012, coaching players of all ages, from 7 year olds to professional players. In his role at the USTA, Lucero worked and assisted with America's top young prospects like Nicole Gibbs, Ryan Harrison, Sam Querrey, and others. He also ran Regional Training Center camps around the country, working with players and coaches to identify and build relationships with future prospects. Since then, Lucero has worked privately with professionally players Eugenie Bouchard and Alison Riske, helping both to career high rankings in their time with him, as well as top American juniors players. Most recently he was the coach of Shelby Rogers, whom he helped reach a career-high rank of No.48 in the world in January of 2017. In 2016 Rogers reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, becoming the first American other than Venus and Serena Williams to reach this round since 2001. In 2017 Rogers was part of the United States Fed Cup Championship team, winning the deciding match with partner Coco Vandeweghe on the road in Belarus. Those accomplishments, along with guiding Rogers to one of her most consistently impressive years on tour, resulted in Lucero being named 2017 Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Touring Coach of the Year. Since December 2019 he was coached Steve Johnson. He is a co-founder of First Break Academy, a nonprofit program providing tennis, multi-sport, and educational programming to children in the Carson area. He also does television throughout the year, providing on-air commentary and in-match analysis at events like the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open, and World Team Tennis. Prior to working for the USTA, Lucero was an assistant coach for the women's team at Princeton University. He attended Boston College where he was captain of the men's tennis team, leading the Eagles in wins in his time there. He was also a 3 time Big East Conference Academic All Star. Lucero graduated with a degree in Economics from the Carroll School of Management Honors Program. Lucero grew up in San Diego, California. When he is not on tour, and enjoys surfing, yoga, and reading, but most of all spending time in his role as a new dad.

Jeff welcomes guest Steven Blush, author of the recent book Bustin' Balls: World Team Tennis 1974-78: Pro Sports, Pop Culture, and Progressive Politics. We talk about how drastically WTT has changed from the early days, the crucial importance of Billie Jean King and the 1973 Battle of the Sexes, and how WTT fit into the 1970s cultural milieu. As Steven tells it, the original WTT was revolutionary, even "proto-woke," with a place for everyone, setting men and women on equal footing, and welcoming everyone from Black NBA star John Lucas to (eventually) transgender trailblazer Renee Richards. This is an in-depth look at a neglected but fascinating part of tennis history.
