“Always think positively" sounds like good advice - on the surface. But is it really possible, or even desirable? In this episode, Dominic Thiem and I explore why chasing constant positivity isn't the answer. Novak Djokovic weighed in on this idea in a 2024 interview, explaining why he doesn't agree with the idea that we should always think positively. Novak's ability to acknowledge and allow challenging thoughts and feelings, and then recenter himself, is what makes him probably the 'mentally toughest player' in the history of the sport;. Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, shares a similar perspective. I caught up with Dom just before his retirement last year, and his insights on this topic were particularly insightful. The full episode with Domi is here: https://pod.fo/e/276837 The paperback edition of my book, Champion Thinking: Get Out of Your Own Way, Find Your Peak Performance, is now available. Grand Slam winner Dominic Thiem is a strong proponent of the importance of mindful eating. Dominic shares his powerful perspective on how we interact with food, the role mindfulness plays in his life, and how anyone—athlete or not—can benefit from a more intentional approach to eating. As the year winds down, Jack, John, Stevie, and Sam take a look back at the 2024 tennis season. The gang kicks off the show reflecting on the year's biggest storylines, from Jannik Sinner's historic 73-6 season and Djokovic's Golden Slam-less year to Zverev's climb to No. 2. How does Sinner's dominance compare to the all-time greats? Is Djokovic content with Olympic Gold but no majors? And how will Carlos Alcaraz rate his two-Slam season? The boys then dive into the season's most memorable moments submitted by the audience before wrapping up by discussing the players who said goodbye to tennis in 2024 including Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray, and Dominic Thiem. 2024 was a year of new beginnings, and bittersweet ends. Andre, Vansh, and Owen discuss the careers of several incredible players who announced their retirement this year, reminiscing of fantastic matches they played, their game styles, and what value they brought to the tennis world.Rafael Nadal, the eternal Clay GOAT, but so much more.Garbiñe Muguruza, who did all that a tennis player could dream of, and leaves tennis enjoying full health and a well deserved rest.Angelique Kerber, an unorthodox player who probably overachieved, and will forever be one of the greatest defenders tennis has ever seen.Andy Murray, the only one who could possibly challenge the Big 3 consistently, and carved a space where he alone stands in history.Dominic Thiem, who had his career stolen by injuries, but reach such heights that will leave fans in awe of his on-court aggressive mindset forever. And dang, what the heck, Andy Murray is already back on the Tour coaching Novak Djokovic. Sometimes, as we've been reminded, life doesn't always turn out how you think it should. In this episode of NCR you'll hear from the recently retired Dominic Thiem via his appearance on a recent episode of the podcast A New Way of Being hosted by Simon Mundie. Simon joins Ben on this episode to expound and annotate on Thiem's journey, and what the lessons he learned might hold for us. We also discuss the unprecedented generational chasm between Thiem's generation and the one that came before, and what smartphone technology might have to do with it. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. It's American election time! Which means we discuss the very important upcoming vote results…People's Sexiest Men in Sports list, obviously! (We joke to cope.) Our predictions include one last hurrah for Rafa and the possible inclusion of Taylor Fritz? (Will he be blonde or brunette? That's the real question.) We also have a conversation about Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz's comments about why they played the Six Kings Slam, and if you were wondering why we personally don't support the Saudi tournaments, the Tennis Podcast does a great episode going through why you should care and why it's upsetting. We say our goodbyes and thank yous to Dominic Thiem and consider who he could coach should he wish to now or in the future. In Vienna, rising star Jack Draper defeated a very on-form Karen Khachanov. While in Basel, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard crushed both the final and his Instagram page. New to tennis or trying to get a friend into the sport? In an annual tradition, Ben and Ricky Dimon convene the day after the Marine Corps Marathon to discuss the year in men's tennis. This year the top line story is pretty clear: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dividing and conquering the calendar, claiming the tour for their generation. Which one of them had a better year? And how much of a shadow (or a doubt?) does Sinner's positive test morass cast over his stellar year? We also discuss the generation of 90s-born guys getting passed by, Djokovic hanging on, and young guys like Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard who have arrived in a big way. We also salute some of the guys saying goodbye, including Dominic Thiem (much more on him soon). Thank you for listening! Why success alone doesn't bring happiness but truly embracing the now can be transformative. This is a fascinating conversation with one of my favourite tennis players of the last few decades – Dominic Thiem, who is retiring this week in Vienna. Dominic explains what it's like to reach the pinnacle of success, and then realise… it didn't bring the fulfilment it promised. After winning the US Open in 2020, he found himself grappling with a sense of emptiness, which prompted a period of deep introspection and growth. We talk about the myth of perpetual positivity, dealing with the critical voice in the head and the importance of finding flow—not just in sport but in life. Dominic also shares his insights into mindfulness, meditation, and why smartphones and social media may have hobbled elite athletes born in the 1990s. We also discuss: Challenges of competing against the "Big Three" of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic Importance of stress management as an elite athlete Thiem's journey of finding flow states and the joy of playing, beyond just chasing results The profound impact of winning the 2020 US Open and the subsequent period of readjustment Being impacted by Eckhart Tolle's 'The Power of Now' Discovering the power of mindfulness, meditation and a philosophical perspective on life Concerns about the influence of technology and social media on the next generation of athletes Insights on finding meaning, balance and fulfillment beyond external success Please support this podcast by leaving and review - it can make a big difference My links: Book: https://www.simonmundie.com/book YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeSimonMundie Website: simonmundie.com Substack Newsletter: https://simonmundie.substack.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/ Learn more about your ad choices. Ben and Tumaini chat through all the big stories of the first week of the U.S. Open, which kicked into gear with the upsets of two big men's stars. Carlos Alcaraz (to Bob van de Slap!) and Novak Djokovic lost on back-to-back nights, but which was more surprising? We also discuss the crisis expressed in defeat by Stefanos Tsitsipas, scheduling, and other issues on the men's side. On the women's side, we discuss the difficulty in assessing Naomi Osaka's year, the thrill of Karolina Muchova, and concerns over Elena Rybakina. Lastly, Ben thanks everyone for their generosity, and we commemorate the end of the Slam careers of Dominic Thiem and Danielle Collins, and discuss ghosting ceremonies. Thank you for listening! We ended up quite punchy in this episode, so enjoy some mid-Slam delusion on DAY TWO. We talk about some of the upsets (rip Pablo Carreno Busta, Holger Rune, and Karen Khachanov), the battle of the Boss Babies (Taylor Fritz vs. Matteo Berrettini), and the retirement of iconic players such as Diego Schwartzman and Dominic Thiem. Katie finally announces what she's been teasing for months. She sold a book to Simon & Schuster! And yes, it's a tennis romance novel with soulmates and rivals-to-lovers. And, of course, it wouldn't be a B&C episode if we didn't have a completely unhinged hypothetical question to discuss. The Roland Garros draw threw up 128 first round singles matches, but there's only one which everyone is talking about: 14-time champion Rafael Nadal drawn to face Alexander Zverev. On the pod, hear the reaction from inside the room when Zverev's name was drawn next to Nadal's, as well as Catherine, David and Matt's own feelings about the prospect of that match. Elsewhere, there's chat about the draws facing all the other leading contenders, the state of French tennis, and Dominic Thiem's defeat in qualifying. Ben and Tumaini catch up on the Dinara Double, in which Iga Swiatek "won Rome and Madrid" while on the men's side a whole bunch of draws fell apart and the top of the men's ladder looked shakier than it has in years. We talk about Swiatek launching herself into a new orbit, the upper hand she has on Sabalenka, and wax poetic about the current gloriousness of Danielle Collins. We also discuss the uncertainties around many men's stars, including Djokovic, Sinner, Nadal, and Alcaraz. We then spend a lot of this mega episode discussing players who have announced their retirements and the legacies they leave. Garbine Muguruza, Dominic Thiem, Diego Schwartzman, and Camila Giorgi led four very different lives on this tour, and all left marks in their own ways. We also cover wild cards, how media should discuss Zverev as his criminal trial gets underway in Berlin, Ben's detour into the very different ecosystem of Eurovision coverage, and more!
It's Roland Garros week! And Iga Swiatek will head to Paris as an overwhelming favourite for the French Open title after her dominant victory over Aryna Sabalenka in Rome. Catherine, David and Matt discuss the final, Swiatek's game on the clay, and where she stands in relation to some of the all-time greats. On the men's side, Alexander Zverev won his second Rome title over Nicolas Jarry in the final. Where does he rank among the Roland Garros favourites and will the fact that his trial for domestic abuse allegations begins on May 31st have any impact? There's also chat about Novak Djokovic's decision to take a wildcard into Geneva, Emma Raducanu withdrawing from French Open qualifying, and Dominic Thiem's attempt to get into the main draw. On the Mailbag, Gill Gross is joined by Jimmy Arias to discuss Danielle Collins' incredible surge, the ATP landscape shifting and Novak Djokovic's comments on motivation, before delving into viewer questions, including: is Rafael Nadal actually going to retire in 2024, should Roland Garros have given Dominic Thiem a wildcard, which Roland Garros title contender can take advantage of uncertainty within the top-4 (Tsitsipas? Zverev? Ruud?), is there too much Jack Draper hype, what is the future of technique, is there more complaining on tour these days, how can Taylor Fritz level up his game, Andy Murray has switched to a Yonex EZONE 100 and why might Alexander Zverev have such a poor record against Stefanos Tsitsipas? For the first time since 2004, neither Novak Djokovic nor Rafael Nadal will feature in the quarter-finals of Rome as both lost early at the Foro Italico. Djokovic was beaten in just over an hour by Alejandro Tabilo, a couple of days after being hit on the head by a water bottle, while Nadal was a shadow of himself in a 6-1 6-3 loss to Hubert Hurkacz. Catherine, David and Matt discuss both results and, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner both sidelined with injury, there's lots of chat about what it all means for Roland Garros. In the women's event, Elena Rybakina's withdrawal is discussed, as well as impressive weeks for Naomi Osaka and Paula Badosa. Finally, there's reaction to Dominic Thiem announcing his retirement at the end of the season. LONDON LIVE SHOW! On the Mailbag, Gill Gross unpacks Dominic Thiem's legacy and why the reaction to his retirement should be celebration, not regret. Then, we get to your comments: is Thiem quitting too soon, would Thiem have returned to peak form if the wrist injury never happened, are the injuries on tour a result of a poor calendar, who would be the Roland Garros Frankenstein, thoughts on Diego Schwartzman and Camilla Giorgi retirement developments, should excessive grunting be outlawed, what explains the decline in Daniil Medvedev's serve, why were top players so inconsistent at Roland Garros in the late 90s early 2000s? On the Mailbag, Gill Gross unpacks Novak Djokovic's split with Goran Ivanisevic, including the media coverage, the reasons for the breakup, who might be next and what value that person should bring to the 24-time major champion. We'll answer your comments, including: how do we rank events in order of court speed, why Nuno Borges got robbed in Estoril, why Iga Swiatek can struggle against relentless power aggression, how Jannik Sinner will fare on clay, will Medvedev overcome his limitations, has Stefanos Tsitsipas's forehand declined, what are the ideal surface speeds, can stats help explain errors, what to make of Dominic Thiem's admission that his wrist still limits his power? 00:00 Intro 00:30 Djokovic x Ivanisevic 10:30 Novak's Next Coach 18:09 Court Speed Tiers 22:33 Borges Robbery 28:50 Swiatek vs. Power 43:37 Sinner on Clay 38:40 Medvedev's Limitations 45:08 Sinner vs. Alcaraz Movement 48:35 Tsitsipas Struggles 51:50 Ideal Surfaces 55:58 Explaining Errors 1:00:13 Thiem's Quote Things I forgot to say… Regarding punishment for umpire mistakes; their performance is constantly being evaluated, so the punishment generally comes in the form of doing smaller matches.
