American Patrick Kypson joined The Sit-Down this week in a great place in his career. The 26-year-old sits at a peak ranking of No.117, thanks to results on the Challenger circuit which also helped him secure a main-draw wildcard at Australian Open 2026. After missing three months of 2025 due to a foot stress fracture and dropping outside the world’s top 450, Kypson soared when he returned, winning four ATP Challenger titles and benefitting from a commitment to more aggression and a better transition game to compliment the counterpunching instincts he honed from childhood on the green clay courts of North Carolina. During this interview Viv and Matt also learned about Kypson’s connection with leading Americans on the ATP Tour, his journey through the US college system, and what he’s targeting when his 2026 season begins Down Under. George Bellshaw grasps the reins as James Gray takes a week off. He is joined by Calvin Betton, fresh from ATP World Tour Finals victory with Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara. Here are six bullet points summarizing this podcast episode: Henry Patten and Harry Heliövaara's ATP Finals triumph: Calvin reflects on their dominant week in Turin, where they became the only pair not to lose serve all tournament and capped off a phenomenal end to the season with victories in Beijing, Paris, and the year-end finals in Turin, all after winning the Australian Open in January. Sinner's indoor dominance continues: Jannik Sinner defeated Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 7-5 in the ATP Finals, extending his remarkable indoor winning streak to 31 matches (fourth-longest in history) and demonstrating his superiority in fast court conditions. Felix Auger-Aliassime poised for breakthrough: Calvin's bold prediction: FAA will establish himself as the world's third-best player in 2026, citing his newfound confidence, consistent results, injury-free status, and superior talent compared to players like Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz. Zverev's coaching concerns: Despite being world number two, Calvin criticises Zverev's practice sessions as lacking proper structure and technical coaching, suggesting he needs to hire a proven coach rather than relying solely on family members if he wants to win majors. ATP calendar controversy intensifies: Calvin and George discuss Andrea Gaudenzi's plans to expand Masters events and focus on "premium products," with Calvin arguing passionately against taking tennis away from passionate fanbases in places like South America and Italy in favour of lucrative but atmosphere-lacking Middle Eastern venues. Djokovic's reality check: George and Calvin reflect on Novak Djokovic's interview with Piers Morgan, in which he admits the rise of Sinner and Alcaraz has forced him to re-evaluate his goals. After the final match of the ATP Tour season, Catherine David & Matt are joined by Charlie Eccleshare in Turin to discuss the latest edition of the Sinneraz rivalry, and another astonishing ATP Finals title for Jannik Sinner, who is now undefeated on indoor hard courts for two full seasons. Part One 00:00 - In depth analysis of Sinner's straight sets win over Alcaraz in front of a giddy Italian crowd. What makes Sinner so good on an indoor court, how big an impact has his new-found variety had on his match up with Alcaraz? And how worried should we be about Alcaraz's hamstring injury that seemed to plague him in the second half of the match? There's also discussion of the rivalry in general, where it goes from here and whether men's tennis is precariously reliant on its two biggest superstars. Part Two 54:33 - The team discuss a doubles title for Harri Heliövaara and Henry Patten, beating Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury in the final, as well as a dominant showing generally for British doubles players at the year-end finals. There's also a deep dive on the comments from ATP CEO Andrea Gaudenzi in Turin this week, defending his controversial move to extend 1000 events to 12 days in length. Plus there's a look ahead to the week ahead at the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna, where Matt will be reporting from on-site.Become a Friend of The Tennis PodcastCheck out our new merch shop! Humbert, victime de douleurs au dos n'a pas voulu prendre le moindre risque. Les galères continuent pour Humbert qui a enchaîné les blessures cette saison et s'il renonce au Masters de Paris, il perdra son statut de numéro 1 français.

Naomi Osaka fell short to an impressive and in-form Amanda Anisimova in a very entertaining semi-final which followed a three-set thriller between defending champion Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula. Osaka made a bright start but was pipped by the eighth seed who was able to hold her nerve and maintain her level in the deciding set. Take nothing away from Osaka, who has had a superb fortnight and has a top-20 ranking to show for the brilliant work she has put in during this North American hard-court swing. In the women's doubles final, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova fell to third seeds Erin Routliffe and Gabriela Dabrowski in straight sets – 6-4, 6-4. The top seeds were three-love-down in the second set and fought their way back into proceedings before the New Zealand-Canadian duo eventually saw them off. Regardless, it has been an incredible, “life changing” tournament for Townsend who made a run to the fourth round in singles, taking out a Grand Slam champion and the world No 5 en route and was within a set of beating Barbora Krejcikova. In the second men's semi-final, Felix Auger-Aliassime gave a good account of himself in a four-set defeat to defending champion Jannik Sinner. The 25-year-old Canadian looked a completely different player to the one that was outplayed by Sinnner in Cincinnati last month and was hanging with the world No 1 from the baseline. Auger-Aliassime, who returns to the top 20, can now focus on his wedding before returning to the ATP Tour where it feels like a another breakthrough is imminent. Good Evening. Welcome to Nakashima Nightly. It is July 11th, and I'm Dan Burkett - your lead Nakashima Correspondent. Before we begin, I want to take a moment to acknowledge Taylor Fritz in this week's hashtag-Fritz-Friday. Playing in his first ever Wimbledon semifinal, Fritz was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. Fritz played a determined match, and with two set points in the fourth set tiebreaker, it was a heartbreaking loss for the American. Still, we congratulate Taylor Fritz on a great grass court season, and look forward to seeing what he can do in the North American hard court swing.American tennis pro Brandon Nakashima took a well-earned break from the professional circuit yesterday, opting for a day filled with casual sports and quality time with his brother. After spending the earlier part of the day on the golf course, Nakashima was spotted later hitting tennis balls with his brother in what appeared to be a relaxed and enjoyable session on the courts. While there are no major updates to report in terms of tournaments or rankings for Nakashima at the moment, the glimpse into his off-court life is a reminder of the balance athletes strive to maintain during the long, demanding tennis season. With the ATP Tour's summer hardcourt swing approaching, days like these offer a chance to recharge both physically and mentally.Known for his calm demeanor and powerful baseline play, Nakashima has steadily carved out a name for himself on tour. His 2022 ATP title in San Diego and deep runs in several other tournaments have shown that he possesses both the talent and the temperament to compete with the best. But like any top-tier athlete, downtime is essential—and yesterday's mix of golf and tennis seems to be part of that personal formula. While fans may be eager for news of his next big match or training milestone, it's moments like these that provide a deeper look at the human side of high-performance sport. Whether refining his serve on the practice court or lining up a putt on the green, Nakashima remains a model of focus, discipline, and quiet dedication. For now, supporters will have to wait for his next official appearance. But it's safe to say that Brandon Nakashima is keeping his game—and his spirit—in good shape.Stay tuned for more updates as the tour rolls on.And with that, we conclude our first week here at Nakashima Nightly. Thank you so much for your continued support. Please continue to support our show by liking this episode, commenting below, sharing with a friend, and subscribing to our channel. Welcome back, tennis fans! It is July 10th, this is Nakashima Nightly, and I'm Dan Burkett, your lead Brandon Nakashima correspondent. Before we begin with our usual news report regarding superstar Brandon Nakashima, I want to first extend a heartfelt congratulations to Amanda Anisimova for defeating Sabalenka to earn her spot in this year's Wimbledon final. Truly, an amazing run she's been having, and we hope to see her take the title on Saturday. Now, let's get to it:While most professional athletes spend their seasons traveling, training, and competing non-stop, American tennis player Brandon Nakashima chose a different route today. Instead of heading straight back to the practice courts after his Wimbledon run, Nakashima took an unorthodox detour in his grass-court season—with a leisurely round of golf alongside his brother. The 23-year-old, known for his calm and composed presence on the tennis court, decided to take a break not with more drills or gym time—but with fresh air, soft fairways, and the soft thwack of a golf ball off a tee. It wasn't about training his swing; it was about recharging his mind and body—something more and more top athletes are realizing is just as important as physical workouts. So why would a professional tennis player swap his high-stakes routine for a quiet morning on the green?Because on the ATP Tour, rest is part of the grind.Brandon Nakashima may not always be in the spotlight like some of his louder or flashier tennis peers, but that's exactly what makes him so interesting. He lets his tennis do the talking—and this season, it's said plenty. After winning two tough matches at Wimbledon, including a four-set victory over fellow American Reilly Opelka, Nakashima was knocked out in the third round by Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. While some players might jump straight into the next tournament, Nakashima chose something different: a reset. With a handful of smaller grass-court tournaments still on the calendar before the U.S. Open series kicks off, Nakashima and his team decided that what he needed most wasn't another session of hitting backhands. It was balance. The Demands of the ATP TourTo understand why Nakashima's day off matters, you need to understand how intense life on the ATP Tour really is.Professional tennis players don't just play four tournaments a year like the Grand Slams. Many play 25 to 30 tournaments annually, all over the world—on different continents, time zones, surfaces, and climates. One week you might be playing on clay in Rome, and the next on hard court in Montreal.Matches can last three hours or more, and even if a player loses early, they often have to jump on a plane within 24 hours to get to the next event. That means players are constantly dealing with jet lag, sore muscles, mental pressure, and the challenge of keeping their body healthy. It's no wonder that injuries, burnout, and exhaustion are common—even among top players.Let's talk about Why Recovery Isn't “Being Lazy”To someone on the outside, taking a day off from training might seem like slacking. But in professional sports, recovery is actually part of the plan. Experts in sports science often say rest is when the body grows stronger—not during the workout, but after it.Here's what proper recovery can help with:Muscle repair – After intense matches, muscles need time to rebuild and recover. Overtraining can lead to injuries.Mental reset – Tennis is incredibly mental. Players often spend hours focusing, strategizing, and handling pressure. A day away helps clear the mind.Preventing burnout – Constant competition can drain motivation. Fun, stress-free activities like golf, swimming, or spending time with family help players come back fresh.
