In celebration of Women's History Month, we dive into one of the most pivotal moments in tennis history—the story of the Original 9. In 1970, nine courageous women, led by Billie Jean King and Gladys Heldman, signed $1 contracts and risked their careers to revolutionize women's tennis. Facing discrimination and a male-dominated tennis establishment, their bold move laid the foundation for professional women's tennis and equal prize money. This episode of the podcast recounts the iconic Houston tournament, and the lasting impact of these trailblazers. Hear firsthand accounts from Hall of Famers King, Rosie Casals, Nancy Richey, and other members of the Original 9 as they reflect on the risks, rewards, and legacy of their fight for equality. This is a story of independence, resilience and a movement that transcended tennis. The TennisWorthy Podcast is presented by the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The idea of players using psychologists has really only come in over the past 30 to 40 years. Margaret Court captured an all-time record of 64 major titles during her esteemed tennis career, including 24 in singles, 19 in doubles and 21 in mixed doubles. As one of the greatest players of her era, there were several aspects of her life and training that she credits to pushing her game to the next level, which she details with Chris Bowers.Court began tennis as a matter of proximity, growing up near grass courts and fostered by coaches who recognized her talent at a young age. Aside from her on-court skills, she credits her passion for training - running and lifting weights - as the keys to her consistent success and relatively injury-free career. Her arrival at the top of the game was sudden, winning the Australian Championships at age 18, and began a sustained career she covers in depth. Court speaks to the tumult of the early years of professional tennis, her mentors in the men's game and what she enjoys about today's tennis.Margaret Court owns the fourth-best singles winning percentage of all time (91.69). She is one of only three players in history to have won the Boxed Set, consisting of every major title (the singles, doubles and mixed doubles) and is the only player to ever complete a double Boxed Set. Court was year-end No. 1 a total of seven times during her career.

Picture this: A kid growing up in Perth, Australia, watching his father - a  famous Australian tennis player - coaching tennis legend Margaret Court. I am fortunate to have Skip Bowman in conversation with me in our latest episode about all things tennis, scuba diving, and leadership, whether it's on a tennis court, in a deep blue ocean, or a corporate board room. Skip's journey from being a Master Scuba Diver and Instructor to studying organizational psychology and coaching and consulting leaders in some of the largest organizations in the world is an intriguing one. We chat about the revolution of tennis in the 60s and 70s, the remarkable women who paved the way, and the challenges they faced. We delve into how Skip's scuba diving experience and his international cultural immersion when he moved to Switzerland and then Denmark without knowing the language can unleash the next level of growth mindset, leadership, and understanding of the true meaning behind psychological safety. We reflect on the significance of curiosity, reflective capability, and confidence in nurturing a growth mindset and how leaders can tap into these elements to unleash team potential. We explore the digital age, its influences, and implications. We underscore the need to discern between manipulation and exploitation, the various leadership styles we see in global corporations, and how Dolphins - a metaphor for an exemplary leadership style - can shape a safe environment for self-expression. Skip argues that relationships play a crucial role and proposes an interpersonal theory of growth mindset that focuses on helping each other grow and mobilizing supporters. We also discuss the societal programming that leads to the promotion of narcissistic leaders and the need for more complex and clever strategies in today's world. Finally, we address cognitive and collaborative overload in our workspaces, the potential benefits of hybrid working, and the role humor plays in leadership. If the Serb manages to do it, not only will be equal Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slams – the highest across both genders – he will also equal Roger Federer's men's record of eight Wimbledon titles. And with Nadal out of the picture for the rest of the year, he will be on track for a calendar Grand Slam and perhaps put to rest the GOAT debate once and for all. As per usual, Steve Flink joins Vansh Vermani in a deep, highly knowledgeable and analytical talk about yet another Grand Slam tournament! The French Open is now over, and all the champions crowned. Iga Swiatek put on a great show yet again, but was pushed the hardest on route to a Roland-Garros title, finally able to defeat "surprise" finalist Karolina Muchova in three sets in the final. Creating her own history, Muchova herself managed an incredible feat reaching the championship match, notably taking down World No.2 and Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka in what was probably the most epic and dramatic match of the tournament.Novak Djokovic finally got ahead in the Slam race and stands alone for the first time with 23 major titles, a third French Open, and the triple career Grand Slam, a feat only surpassed by Steffi Graf, who has won all major tournaments at least four times each. But now Djokovic is the only one along Serena Williams to own 23 of the most coveted trophies in tennis, most in the Open Era and only one behind Margaret Court for all-time titles... and he is the overwhelming favourite to win Wimbledon. Regardless of what the GOAT debate means for anyone, one thing is certain: Novak Djokovic keeps pushing the limits of what is possible in tennis, and seems to be chasing nothing but his own records now. Question: Do parenting & society's use of problematic philosophy & bad theology prevent personal growth & perpetuate resentment/estrangement in kids as they grow up to be adults? Today's episode is quite powerful, ethnographic and esoteric, entitled “I could've been a Usain Bolt or like a Serena Williams but….” The episode features my twin brother Ricardo Mckenzie and Co-Producer/host Donte Nelson and of course Renaldo McKenzie, Your host. We went deep looking at issues of success as it is affected by ineffective parenting and society; raising and exploring the question: how poverty/parenting/society's institutions use of problematic philosophy and bad theology prevent personal growth and perpetuate estrangement and resentment in children as they grow up. Further, we considered the fact that we were twins but different in our own way and that life is about strategy but that many persons are devoid of that knowledge. We came to the conclusion that we should let kids find their own path; driving home the point that just as teaching must facilitate the uniqueness of students in the learning process, parenting must also account for that uniqueness within the growing process of every child and parents must understand and parent with that mindset. Moreover, we explored the issue of risk-taking saying that risk-taking is not one of some people's traits (certain communities or families traits) and examined how that maybe a consequence of poverty and the cyclical histories people find themselves and poor education and limited opportunities and connections or lack in society in Jamaica and our peoples and we will touch on that one as we talk about bad theology by exposing this particular text of biblical pericope “train up a child in the way that they should go so that when they order should not depart” but the interpretation of the scripture amongst many many many evangelical Christians Caribbean people the family is “train up a child the way that you want them to grow,” and but parenting must adjust their skills to facilitate the child's uniqueness so as to allow the child to become successful in his or her own growth and development. We repeated this several times indicating that parents keep down their children's growth because of bad theology and kids walk away with resentment. We also lift up the fact that there are is also the situation where there's just one parent and the children have to grow up struggling to survive missing out on their childhood and ultimately their dreams. In deed, the discussions on this episode was powerful and quite insightful as we delve into so issues of human value and ethics from an interdisciplinary lenses; lifting up matters to deal with parenting, sports, race, economics, life and learning and how society impedes dreams and perpetuate resentment. But the strongest take aways and points from our discussions is this point that: our parents thwarted our athletic prowess and dreams and 2. That post-colonialism provided new freedoms that was met with dogmas and rules and the the bureaucratic phenomenon. The topics we raised while contending for these and other matters were: Coco Gaugh, Serena and Venus Williams Mbape, Margaret Court, Billi Jean King, Chris Evert, Navratilova, Steffi Graph and the issue of Race, difference of expectations and how media is changing this. Undoubtedly, you can't afford to miss this episode, it's compact, ethnographic and esoteric! *) Republicans dub FBI raid on Trump house 'weaponised politicisation' Top Republican leaders have thrown their support behind former US president Donald Trump after an FBI raid on his Florida residence sparked a political firestorm. Trump's former vice president Mike Pence expressed "deep concern" and said the raid smacked of "partisanship" by the Justice Department. Kevin McCarthy, who is seeking to become the next House of Representatives speaker, accused the Justice Department of "weaponised politicisation." The FBI search marked a significant escalation of the federal investigation into whether Trump illegally removed records from the White House as he was leaving office. *) US police arrest 'prime suspect' in New Mexico Muslim murders New Mexico police have arrested a "prime suspect" believed to be involved in two of the four murders of Muslim men in Albuquerque. Authorities charged 51-year-old Muhammad Syed in the killings of two Muslim men and he is suspected of slaying two others. Police tracked down a vehicle of interest in their investigation of the murders, Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina wrote on Twitter. Medina said "the driver was detained and is our primary suspect for the murders.” *) Large explosions rock Russian air base in occupied Crimea Powerful explosions have rocked a Russian air base in the occupied Crimea, killing one person and wounding several others, authorities said. Russia's Defence Ministry said munitions blew up at the Saki base, and it emphasised that the installation had not been shelled. But Ukrainian social networks were abuzz with speculation that it was hit by Ukrainian-fired long-range missiles. There was no immediate comment from Ukrainian authorities as the conflict entered its 167th day. *) Deadly IEDs target soldiers in northern Burkina Faso At least 15 soldiers have been killed in northern Burkina Faso when a transport vehicle drove over a hidden explosive device. The first explosion killed several troops before a second explosion killed those who rushed to their aid. The incident occurred on a rural road in the Bam province of the country's Central-North region, where soldiers and civilians are routinely targeted by insurgents, the army said. And finally… *) Serena Williams announces retirement from tennis after US Open Tennis great Serena Williams has said that she is planning to retire from the sport following the US Open which begins later this month. Williams wrote in a Vogue article that she "never liked the word retirement." She said that she is "evolving away from tennis" to focus on having another child and her business interests. Williams won her last Grand Slam in 2017 and has been chasing an elusive 24th crown that will draw her level with Margaret Court who holds the record for the most majors.

Van Badham joins Ben Davison for a very special weekend wrap.  Our hosts got married yesterday!  In a small family ceremony at the beach where Van's father's ashes were put into Botany Bay, Van and Ben have tied the knot. But the news waits for no one. Albo's decision to reinstate paid pandemic leave payments for worker's who have to isolate shows the power of working people raising their voice together and the willingness of a Labor government to listen to workers.  The union movement (which you can join at australianunions.org.au/wow) worked hard to make sure the full social, economic and health impacts of forcing people into an economic choice around COVID were understood by the federal and state governments. As COVID continues it will be more important than ever that worker's voices are heard. On Insiders this morning Adam Bandt managed to reignite the mistakes of the climate wars by threatening to vote with the Dutton Liberals to block a legislated 43% reduction in emissions because it wasn't "ambitious" enough. Or if it didn't have a mechanism to stop ALL future coal and gas projects.  Or possibly because he wants the campaign issue.  Van and Ben breakdown why this is bad policy development and self indulgent politics. Plus the happy couple take a look at why Van's mum's local MP, Scott Morrison, is delivering a sermon on the other side of the country at the church of well known anti-equality activist Margaret Court.

Welcome back to the Bill Bradley Collective, where it is our regularly scheduled second drop on a back-to-back, belly-to-belly twin bill: a conversational profile about tennis legend and iconic activist/advocate Billie Jean King. Few, if any, athletes can boast the combined on- and off-court level of achievement that can King. An owner of the rare career singles' Grand Slam and 12 singles' Slams in total, a further 27 were won in combined women's and mixed doubles. In a pre-Evert/Navratilova landscape, King, along with Margaret Court, were the standard-bearers of the time. Perhaps King's most notable on-court accomplishment also created great waves off the court, as her dominant 1973 victory over veteran male Bobby Riggs in the greatly publicized “Battle of the Sexes” in the wake of Title IX brought women in sports to a level heretofore not realized. King's activism both within and outside tennis, founding the modern Women's Tennis Association, advocating both for tennis to appeal to a broader socioeconomic audience and for commensurate pay on the women's side, but also fighting the broader fight for societal gender equality and championing LBGTQ activism as the first openly out prominent female athlete in history, lay the groundwork for this profile. On-court bonafides and off-court altruism tell the broad strokes, but join us also for the details of the palimony case that led to King's coming out and perhaps the greatest spotlight shown on the Virginia Slims' brand since Fatboy Slim's “You've Come a Long Way Baby.” Billie Jean King is both a legend on the tennis court, and as a heavy puncher in the fight for gender and sexual equality. No more apropos a subject for a profile in this the season of women in sports, on the Bill Bradley Collective.

We also do a book-club episode of sorts, discussing Grace Lichtenstein's 1974 book, A Long Way, Baby, which covered the 1973 WTA season, including plenty of great material on Casals. Carl and I talk about whether the 2020s game would allow for such an insider's account of a year on tour, why players seem less unique than Rosie and her peers did, and whether Casals's reputation does her justice. We consider whether today's game would be better off with top players who are more committed to competing week-in, week-out, whether 1970s-style barnstorming would open up new markets for tennis, and why Margaret Court got massacred on Mother's Day and Billie Jean straight-setted the same opponent a few months later. Also, Jeff answers a few questions about The Tennis 128 so far.
