Talking Through Is Anybody Out There? Kyle, Mark and I talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 8, which is titled, Is Anybody Out There? This was written by co-executive producer Michael Alaimo, and directed by Michael E. Satrazemis. We have a very important announcement! After five years, we decided that we were ready to strike out on our own, and as a result, we are leaving the Golden Spiral Media network. We would like to thank Darrell for the opportunity to podcast with GSM over the last five years, and thank him for allowing us to take our podcasts with us. Going forward, the podcasts that we do will be a part of our new network, which is called Talk Through Media, and will consist of the following podcasts: The Walking Dead Talk Through and Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, hosted by Mark, Kyle (Fear only) and me;The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, hosted by Ruthie and me;A new podcast, The Star Trek: Picard Cast, hosted by Ruthie and me, coming soon! And… more podcasts to come! We are excited to start our new endeavor, and we hope to have everything set up by the time we return in three weeks for the FTWD mid-season premiere! If you are listening to us via our TWDTT/FTWDTT feed on whatever podcast app you choose, you should be OK going forward. When we make the change, it should be transparent, and the feed should continue to work. However, if you don’t see an episode from us in about three weeks, several days after the mid-season premiere, then there might be an issue. If you listen to us via the goldenspiralmedia.com website, the episodes will no longer appear here. Just go to walkingdeadtalkthrough.com and you will be redirected to the new location from there! We have more feedback for last week’s episode… S5E8 coverage starts at 34:22… Now that we have our announcement out of the way, we have to share more feedback we received for last week’s episode, S5E7 Still Standing. Discussion on last week’s episode starts at 34 minutes and 22 seconds into the podcast and ends at into the podcast. A better episode! It seems that most people agree that this episode was better than the last several episodes, although Kyle didn’t like it as much as Mark or I did. Ratings went up! Are you wondering about the ratings for S5E8 Is Anybody Out There? Well, they were up this week! got a 0.48 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.599 million viewers, which is up from the last week‘s all-time low of 0.34 and 1.393 million viewers. Talking Dead, on the other hand, after weeks of not being on, came back to what might be the lowest ratings of that show. It only got a 0.07 in the 18-49, with only 373,000 viewers. That’s it for Is Anybody Out There? So Is Anybody Out There? We think so! We’ll be busy over the next three weeks getting our podcasts set up at their new home. We’ll post a link to them here once we have everything finalized. Talking Through Still Standing On this episode 58 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian, Kyle and Mark talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 7, which is titled, Still Standing. This was written by co-producer Richard Naing, and directed by Marta Cunningham. Marta Cunningham is notable because we think she is the first director to also direct Star Trek: Discovery, which is the other show Brian podcasts about. We have more feedback for last week’s episode… S5E7 coverage starts at 30:37… Before we get into this week’s episode, we have to share more feedback we received for last week’s episode, S5E6 The Little Prince, and Kyle tells us what he thought of the episode. Discussion on this week’s episode starts at 30 minutes and 37 seconds into the podcast. Not as many people disliked this episode, but it’s still not a favorite! Most people think this episode was better than last week, but it’s no masterpiece. The character moments are really good, but there are some points in this episode that are handwaved over. How did Strand and Charlie move the balloon? How did it become arranged in such a way to make a wall? How did they move the propellers? How are they continuing to put the plane together when it seems there’s no one actually working on it? How did they suddenly become airplane mechanics? How we don’t see June and Al repel up the mountain? It has some flaws, but if you don’t nitpick too much, it’s still an enjoyable story. Ratings went to an all-time low for the show this week… For the second week in a row, FTWD ratings sunk to a new low in the 18-49 demographic and ratings. S5E6 The Little Prince got a 0.34 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.393 million viewers, down from the last week‘s 0.42 and 1.488 million viewers. Unfortunately, this is an all-time low in ratings and viewers for the show. Again, there was no Talking Dead this week so no ratings for it, but it returns next week. That’s it for Still Standing! Still Standing wasn’t a spectacular episode, but we liked it well enough. Talking Through The Little Prince On this episode 57 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Brian and Mark talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 6, which is titled, The Little Prince. This was written by Mallory Westfall, and directed by Sharat Raju. We have more feedback for last week’s episode… S5E6 coverage starts at 38:30… Before we get into this week’s episode, we have to share more feedback we received for last week’s episode, S5E5 The End of Everything. Discussion on this week’s episode starts at 38 minutes and 30 seconds into the podcast. A lot of people didn’t like this episode… but we did! It’s rare when we like an episode more than all of our listeners, but that was true for The Little Prince this week. For me, I guess it was because our main characters continue having hope, despite insurmountable odds. That’s the only thing I can think of, but I guess it was hopeful when I needed it to be. In other news, that comic book thing happened… Mark and I talk a bit about that news that was a rumor last week, that ended up being the truth. The Walking Dead comic bookended this week, and we talk a little about it, without giving away any spoilers. Ratings went to an all-time low for the show this week… This week, FTWD ratings sunk to a new low in the 18-49 demographic. S5E6 The Little Prince got a 0.42 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.488 million viewers, down from the last week‘s 0.46 and 1.708 million viewers. Unfortunately, this is an all-time low in ratings and viewers for the show. This is not a good trend to go. Again, there was no Talking Dead this week so no ratings for it. Talking Through Adaptation On this episode 91 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and Brian discuss The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 9, which is titled Adaptation. This was written by Corey Reed, and directed by Greg Nicotero. More teenage angst! Henry!!! What else needs to be said? I am kind of fed up with this character, and as such, Brian didn’t care for the episode. Thankfully, ratings are up again!!! This week, TWD got a 2.00 in the 18-49, with 5.156 million, up from 1.96 and 5.089 million for the mid-season finale. That’s not much, but we’ll take it! Charts below. Due to scheduling conflicts, we have decided to go to a Wednesday night recording schedule for the rest of the season. Please leave your feedback for The Walking Dead, Season 9 Episode 10, titled Omega by 6 PM Eastern/5 PM Central on Wednesday, February 20, 2019. Check the Facebook group for any deadline changes. Speaking of scheduling conflicts… Brian has decided that he will be stepping back a bit from the podcast, and will not be hosting the show every week. Part of it is due to scheduling with The Star Trek Discovery Podcast, partly due to some fatigue, and partly because the show is not doing it for him like it was, and he wants to focus more on Star Trek. Rest assured, you’ll hear from Brian every week, even when he’s not hosting. He’s not leaving the podcast, but he will take a few weeks off. Talking Through Stradivarius On this episode 89 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I discuss The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 7, which is titled Stradivarius. This was written by Vivian Tse, who is a new writer to the show, and directed by Michael Cudlitz, who I’m sure you all remember played Abraham. This season continues to be the best in years. SPOILER ALERT!!! SPOILER ALERT!!! The rest of this blog post requires a SPOILER WARNING!!! If you haven’t watched this week’s episode, then you probably should stop now. Daryl’s been searching… but won’t ever find what he’s looking for It seems like Daryl has been out there, searching for Rick for the past six years, living alone, except for a new dog named Dog. It turns out that Daryl has the same X scar as Michonne does. Speaking of Daryl and Michonne… and Maggie… It was postulated that perhaps the rift between Michonne and Maggie could have been based upon Michonne finding out the circumstances behind why Rick was out there in the first place. If she found out that Daryl kept Rick out there to keep him away from Alexandria, and that Daryl’s actions were in part to blame for Rick’s purported death, then I could see there being a rift between Michonne and Maggie, and Daryl could have also been blamed. Maybe that’s why Daryl never went back to Alexandria, in addition to the guilt Daryl has. It doesn’t explain why they both have the same scar. I doubt that Maggie would have done that to them both. The walkers are speaking now??? Or are they??? Continuing from the end of the last episode, we see Rosita being pursued by a herd of walkers that can speak. She somehow got separated from Eugene, and the episode ends with the search for Eugene, led by Dog! Unfortunately, ratings have reached a new low… This week, TWD only got a 1.80 in the 18-49, with 4.794 million, down from 2.02 and 5.396 million last week. The 1.80 marks the all-time low for ratings in the 18-49 demographic. There were two episodes lower in viewers in Season 1, but this episode isn’t far ahead of them. With the mid-season finale airing on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, it’s highly possible that next week’s ratings could go even lower, although I hope I am wrong. Charts below. Talking Through The Bridge! On this episode 84 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I talk through The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 2, which is titled The Bridge. It was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer. We both loved this one and are happy about the direction the show is going so far. Poor Aaron… There’s a great action sequence at the lumber camp, featuring the log rolling, a work accident, some great melee combat and Rick shooting the logs free and the awesome destruction unleashed as a result. Aaron’s arm is gruesomely crushed, with flesh and bone showing. Enid is forced to think on her feet and do what she had no choice to do and amputate Aaron’s arm, with Siddiq being back at home dealing with a bug that’s hit Alexandria. For me, this was one of the best sequences on the show in recent seasons, with outstanding special effects and makeup to make Aaron’s injury so realistic. I was very impressed with these scenes, although some of the backstory was a little sketchy. Why would they put slacker Justin in charge of that second siren post? Did he get what he deserved at the end of the episode? I think so! Love… Exciting and New! Friendships strained… We saw some couples this episode, old and new. New couples Jerry and Nabila, Ezekiel and Carol, Anne and Gabriel, established couple (but new to us) Tammy Rose and Earl and, of course, staples Team Richonne! Were you surprised about Anne and Gabriel? Let’s not forget the strained friendships of Rick and Daryl, Michonne and Maggie, and Maggie and Jesus (to a lesser extent). I look forward to how these develop – how many will survive? Ratings are way down… As you can see from these rating and viewer charts, created by me, you’ll see that the 18-49 rating hit an all-new low at 1.98, and the 4.937 million is the lowest since S1E4 Vatos. It is normal for ratings for the second episode to be lower than the premiere, but the decline cannot be denied. To contrast, last week got a 2.49 in the 18-49 with 6.076 million viewers. Talking Through I Lose People… On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Kyle, Mark, and I talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 15, which is titled I Lose People… It was written by co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez and directed by David Barrett. This was a pretty good episode! There were some cool stunts, nice story moments, and a few things we didn’t like, but all in all, this one was probably the best of the second half so far. Ratings are up… I Lose People… got a 0.66 in the 18-49 demographic, with 2.033 million viewers. up from 0.57 and 1.871 million viewers last week. Get in your feedback! Talking Through MM 54!!! On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, Kyle’s out this week, so Mark and I discuss Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 14, which is titled MM 54. It was written by supervising producer Anna Fishko & co-executive producer Shintaro Shimosawa and directed by Lou Diamond Phillips. We get to see some backstory on the “Filthy Woman”, who we now know is named Martha, but a lot of the backstory seemed forced and we found certain holes in how she became the psychotic zombie-apocalypse serial killer she is now. Both too much AND too little time had passed in the cold open, and how I ultimately liked the last scene with her connecting to Morgan. Ratings are up! Ratings for MM 54 are up from the previous week in the total viewers. Fear the Walking Dead got a 0.57 in the 18-49, which is the same from last week, with 1.871 million viewers, which is up from 1.712 million last week. That’s it for MM 54! Talking Through Blackjack!!! On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 13, which is titled Blackjack. It was written by executive producer and co-showrunner Ian Goldberg & writer Richard Naing directed by Sharat Naju. This was a polarizing episode. I thought it was the best episode this half-season, as did Mark, but Kyle did not like it very much. The “Filthy Woman”, as she’s called on Talking Dead, became much more of a villain against our people, showing her chaotic evil. We thought the characters worked better this time, but some parts of the story were pretty forced. Ratings were up from last week! Blackjack got a 0.57 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.712 million viewers, up from 0.48 and 1.521 million viewers last week. Charts below. That’s it for Blackjack! Talking Through Weak!!! On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 12, which is titled Weak. It was written by co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez and directed by Colman Domingo, who plays Strand on this show, in his TV directorial debut. This was a well-acted and directed episode, with a few negatives. I liked it more than last week’s episode, but there were some things I had to fault it for. We’re not sure what makes the “Filthy Woman”, as she’s called in the credits, tick. She just seems to be a chaos agent. We’re also seeing some characters are poorly developed. Althea is a self-defined “chick with layers”, but we’re not seeing those layers yet. She’s pretty two dimensional. But if she’s two dimensional, Jim is pretty one-dimensional. He’s all beer, all the time! Ratings are down a little… Weak got a 0.61 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.827 million viewers, down slightly from last week‘s 0.63 and 1.855 million viewers. Talking Through The Code!!! On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 11, which is titled The Code. It was written by co-showrunner and executive producer Andrew Chambliss & staff writer Alex Delyle and directed by Tara Nicole Weyr. This was a well-acted episode, with interesting new characters, but beyond that, the episode falls apart. For me, the plot of this episode was one of the weakest of the series, and maybe the entire franchise. How does Morgan not wake up even once while the truck he is sleeping in is being driven from Texas to Mississippi??? Trust me, I recently drove a truck 1200 miles across several states, and there is no way Morgan could have slept through it without being drugged. What were these characters doing BEFORE they met Morgan? Were Sarah and Wendell driving a different truck? If they weren’t transporting these boxes, how did they know all the routes? What about Jim? How was Jim going to become “rich” in the apocalypse if he never left the brewery? It goes on and on from there. Listen to the episode for more. Ratings were down slightly… Ratings for The Code were a 0.61 in the 18-49 demographic with 1.827 million viewers, down from last week‘s 0.63 and 1.855 million viewers. Charts below. It does not let you watch past seasons of shows, which really sucks. I continue to have authentication issues. Although I had downloaded a copy of this week’s episode on my phone through the app, which I was planning to watch on my lunch break, the app wouldn’t let me watch the episode because it wasn’t authenticating. I don’t know if the problem lies with Spectrum or AMC, but it led to a bad user experience. Talking Through Close Your Eyes On this episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 10, which is titled Close Your Eyes. It was written by co-executive producer Shintaro Shimosawa and directed by co-executive producer Michael E. Satrazemis. This was a bottle episode, but a good one. It only featured two characters: Alicia and Charlie. Charlie became somewhat less annoying this episode, and Alycia Debnam-Carey got to shine with this episode. Compared to last week, this was definitely a better episode, but, for me, it wasn’t outstanding. Though the acting was spot on, some of the dialog and scenes were a bit too on the nose. While the hurricane was definitely more believable this time around, there was one plot twist that I found a bit of a stretch. Ratings are down… Close Your Eyes got a 0.63 in the 18-49 with 1.855 million viewers, which is down from last week‘s 0.68 and 1.878 million viewers. Charts below. That’s it for Close Your Eyes! I also took a few minutes at the end of our episode discussion to talk about my recent experiences with AMC Premiere. When it works, it’s not bad. You get to watch shows commercial-free, there is additional content available to Premiere subscribers, and I enjoyed my first week. I was able to sign up using a $5 credit I had from Google Play, so it’s like having a free month. However, there were a few issues that make me fall short of recommending it right now. Talking Through People Like Us We are back! Fear the Walking Dead Through is back with an analysis of Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 9, which is titled People Like Us. It was written by supervising producer Anna Fishko and directed by Magnus Martens. The story of the mid-season premiere, itself, was decent. The special effects, on the other hand, were among the worst we have seen in the franchise. Of course, we were warned, but there’s nothing like the actual episode to bring out more detail. Ratings were down… People Like Us got a 0.68 in the 18-49 demographic, with 1.878 million viewers, which is down from the mid-season finale‘s 0.73 and 2.320 million viewers. Charts below. Laura was written by Anna Fishko, and directed by Michael E. Satrazemis. Forgive us for being late this week, but I was not available to edit the episode like I normally do. Billy Bass alarm clocks! Kyle and Mark both had reservations and suspicions about John, but they do no longer! They have joined me for being members of the John Dorie Fan Club! Anyone who has a Billy Bass alarm clock can’t be a bad guy! How can you not love John? I want to BE John. I just hope that Naomi’s not dead after all and that he will meet up with her in the end. Laura, what’s your story? Why Laura/Naomi didn’t stay with John at the end is beyond me, but at least she said consistently from first arriving until she left that she would be leaving. That’s why I haven’t gone completely ballistic over her. I don’t understand why she won’t stay, what she has to get back to, and, if she HAD to get back, why didn’t she take John with her? I definitely hope we will get an answer soon. She reminds me of a couple of past girlfriends a little too much. What’s the Laura consensus? We all loved it! What else can be said? Ratings are pretty even… S4E5 Laura got a 0.85 in the 18-49 demographic, with 2.464 million viewers, only slightly off versus 0.85 and 2.485 million last week. Regular Feedback Deadline!!! I mentioned on this week’s podcast that I might not be on next week, but since we recorded, I can now tell you that I will be on next week. However, Mark will not be, so it’ll just be Kyle and me. Talking Through Good Out Here!!! On episode 38 of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through, it’s just Kyle and me this time, as we talk through Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 3, titled Good Out Here. Good Out Here was written by co-executive producer Shintaro Shimosawa, and directed by Dan Liu. SPOILER ALERT!!! Do not read any further if you have not watched this episode! I mean it! OK… here it goes… We lost Nick this week!!! NICK!!! NICK??? It was a shocking ending that you couldn’t have seen coming. It was a great episode before the ending, but the ending solidified this episode as one of the best Fear the Walking Dead episodes to date, if not the best. Where do we go from here, and where is Madison? If she’s still alive, how’s she going to take the news? I missed reacting to it in Lara’s voicemail, but could Madison kill Charlie out of vengeance? So many of Madison’s actions have been to protect or find Nick. Then again, is Madison still alive? I know I had speculated she was dead last week, but I’m now finding it difficult to conceive of a show where they kill both Nick and Madison off. Who would lead the show after that? I see no good candidates that will ultimately work in that role. What’s the Good Out Here consensus? Like the first two episodes, the feedback on this episode is overwhelmingly positive, though not unanimous. Most people seem to like where the show is going but are floored by the death of Nick. I thought this was the best episode of the series. Ratings are down Ratings for Good Out Here were 0.97 in the 18-49 demographic with 2.708 million viewers, down from last week‘s 1.09 and 3.066 million viewers. Regular Feedback Deadline!!!
