On this week's episode, I'm joined by Lou Diamond Phillips, who you know from … well, tons of stuff. La Bamba, Young Guns, Longmire, and last year's best new TV show, The Chair Company. He's on the show this week to discuss his new film, Keep Quiet, which is playing this Saturday evening at the Dallas International Film Festival and should hit theaters this summer. We talked about all sorts of stuff, but one thing I find really fascinating is Keep Quiet's place in the burgeoning mini-genre we might think of as Native Noir: films like this, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Wind River, TV shows like Reservation Dogs, Dark Winds, and Longmire, etc. It's an interesting moment, and Keep Quiet is a key part of it. I hope you'll seek it out once it hits theaters … don't worry, I'll remind you when it's about to happen.

RUNDOWN Mitch opens Episode 361 barely able to speak. Area code 361, is a surprisingly stacked Corpus Christi résumé — from Farrah Fawcett's iconic poster-era fame to Eva Longoria, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Lynyrd Skynyrd's longtime keyboardist Billy Powell. The college football playoff drama continues, Notre Dame spent weeks ahead of Miami in the rankings only to get leapfrogged on a Saturday when neither team played — and then "boycott" bowl season in peak Irish fashion. From there they pivot to the Seahawks' 26–6 win in Atlanta, breaking down Sam Darnold's Jekyll-and-Hyde day (ugly first half, near-perfect second), Rashid Shaheed finally becoming a real factor in the passing game, and rookie safety Nick Emmanwori looking like a heat-seeking missile on an already elite defense. Rick breaks down a wild Selection Sunday, starting with the baffling late flip that dropped Notre Dame behind Miami despite neither team playing — a move he believes was driven more by ACC politics than football. He argues Alabama should've been penalized for an awful SEC title game showing, outlines why championship games now feel meaningless, and even says this version of Alabama "has no chance." Mitch, Brady, and Jacson break down Seattle's 37–9 dismantling of the Falcons, a performance highlighted by back-to-back games without allowing a touchdown and the defense's most dominant two-week stretch since 2014. Devin Witherspoon and Nick Emmanwori delivered superstar-level days while the returns of Julian Love and Jarran Reed stabilized the unit even further. On offense, Sam Darnold shook off a miserable first half and exploded for 182 yards and three touchdowns after halftime. Mitch brings Brady and Joe back together for the first Mariners No-Table since the season ended in Toronto, diving straight into Seattle's early offseason headline: the five-year, $92M Josh Naylor deal — a rare moment where the Mariners actually did what "everyone agrees they should do." The guys break down why the front office moved so fast, whether it was an overpay, and what it signals to the clubhouse and the league. From there, they examine the next dominoes (Polanco, bullpen additions, third base uncertainty), debate Cole Young's floor vs. ceiling, unpack the Harry Ford trade, and even entertain the dream-but-unlikely scenario of trading for Tarik Skubal. Hollywood has never shied away from portraying obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — but it often gets it wrong. Typically, OCD is reduced to a punchline, a quirky habit, or a stereotype about neatness and handwashing. In this episode, TV & movie actor Rachel Alig and award-winning filmmaker Sam Sabawi take us behind the scenes of their acclaimed short film “For All I Know” to show how OCD can — and should — be portrayed with truth and compassion. Sam, who lives with OCD, explains why lazy writing has distorted public understanding and how he used his lived experience to create an authentic story. Rachel shares the emotional depth required to embody a character with OCD, and how she avoided the clichés that Hollywood often leans on. Together, they reveal how real therapy techniques — especially exposure and response prevention (ERP) — were brought into the film to highlight the messy, ongoing reality of recovery. Listener takeaways: how Hollywood depictions have shaped public misconceptions of OCD and why the process of authentically portraying OCD on screen matters what OCD actually is — and isn't why ERP therapy is the gold standard for treatment This is a rare insider look at mental illness through the eyes of two industry leaders determined to change how we see OCD. Listen now! Sam and Rachel's Award-Winning Short Film About OCD, For All I Know, is available on YouTube now. (Viewing Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vwk4UPHKp0) Our guest, Sam Sabawi, is a two-time Emmy-nominated filmmaker whose work spans narrative fiction, documentary, and unscripted formats. A five-time Telly Award winner and two-time Anthem Gold recipient, Sabawi brings over a decade of experience in visual storytelling across scripted film, development, and branded content. His recent short film For All I Know explores the interior landscape of OCD to externalize intrusive thoughts. The film is currently on its festival circuit. Our guest, Rachel Alig, is quickly establishing herself as a dynamic force in both comedy and drama, with a growing list of standout performances across film, television, and commercial work. With over a decade of experience, she has shared the screen with acclaimed talent including John Magaro (The Big Short, PastLives, Carol), Lou Diamond Phillips, Nick Jonas, Jason Biggs, Rob Riggle, and Master P. Her most recent film, OMAHA—starring John Magaro—premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in the prestigious U.S. Dramatic Competition category and was acquired by Greenwich Entertainment for a theatrical release in early 2026. She also appears in FOUND FOOTAGE, distributed by Vertical Entertainment, which hit theaters nationwide on June 20, 2025. Rachel stars opposite of Lou Diamond Phillips and Malcolm McDowell in, ET TU, which started streaming on all major platforms this summer. Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he rewrote rock and roll with a B-side that outlived him and in 1987, La Bamba brought that story roaring back. In this episode, the McGuigan Brothers trace how Lou Diamond Phillips turned a random audition into a career-defining role, how Los Lobos' version hit #1 worldwide, and how a teen from Pacoima became a forever icon. From studio snapshots to “Producer Kate's Rate”, “Most Beatley Moment”, and “Ryan's A&R Guy”, it's a soundtrack deep-dive that keeps the spirit of Ritchie alive and just maybe, changed our lives along the way.

When Calculus Meets Heart: Stand and Deliver Gets the Math TreatmentWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell tackle the 1988 inspirational drama Stand and Deliver, starring Edward James Olmos as real-life teacher Jaime Escalante. This episode dives into whether this classroom classic still holds up or if it's just another case of sitting through endless math problems. The Good, The Bad, and The CalculusThe hosts appreciate Edward James Olmos' committed, Academy Award-nominated performance—he even underwent hair thinning for the role and followed the real teacher around for research. Lou Diamond Phillips also shines as Angel, the charismatic bad boy with hidden depths. However, Krissy and Nathan find themselves wanting more emotional depth and character development. They argue that while the movie succeeds as inspiration, it fails to show the real struggles and motivations that would drive these students to commit so deeply to advanced mathematics. The discussion takes an interesting turn when they question the practicality of teaching calculus versus life skills like tax accounting. They also critique the film's structure, noting that despite being billed as a comedy, it's more of a straightforward drama that keeps viewers at arm's length from the action. The hosts give Stand and Deliver a solid 6 out of 10, appreciating its heart while acknowledging its limitations.Additional Thoughts:The movie should have been called "Sit and Calculate" given how much sitting and math occursMore scenes showing students' home lives and personal struggles would have strengthened the narrativeThe ending needed more follow-up on what happened to these students after passing their AP examsEdward James Olmos deserved the Oscar over Michael Douglas that yearThe film lacks the dramatic tension found in other inspirational teacher moviesFinal VerdictWhile Stand and Deliver remains an earnest tribute to dedicated educators and student potential, the hosts feel it plays things too safe. It's a movie that works better in memory than on rewatch, though Olmos' powerhouse performance still delivers the goods.Ready to join the conversation about your favorite 80s movies? On this episode of The Adam Carolla Show, actor Lou Diamond Phillips stops by the studio to share stories from his life and career. Lou opens up about the origins of his name, the strange ways fans insist they've met him before, and his love of cooking for family and friends. He recalls making sandwiches his mom would make him as a kid, working at Whataburger and even preparing lunch for Willie Nelson, and the worst job he ever had. Lou also dives into Hollywood life, from his early days being cast in Hispanic roles despite not being Hispanic, to getting dragged 100 yards behind a horse on the set of Young Guns 2, and talks with Adam about how hard it is to make a good comedic film or TV show.Later, stand-up comedian Mike Vecchione and MMA personality Jason “Mayhem” Miller join Adam in the studio. They kick things off talking about the myth that white people don't want to work the typical manual labor jobs that immigrants take, and compare sports in high school back then to today, where schools make special accommodations for kids who aren't as athletic. Adam shares a brutal story about being rejected when he tried asking a girl out, while Mike and Mayhem weigh in on the challenges of growing up and competing in those environments. Adam also asks Mayhem for his take on the Raja Jackson situation. In the news, Mayhem joins Adam and Mike Vecchione to discuss the week's trending headlines. They cover Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's engagement, joking about the couple as “your English teacher and your gym teacher getting married,” and react to Burning Man 2025's Orgy Dome being destroyed by fierce desert winds, with organizers vowing to rebuild. Welcome back to Summer Slash 7, your ultimate horror movie marathon from Binge-Watchers Podcast! This episode takes flight with a deep-dive review of BATS (1999), a creature feature full of genetically engineered horror, wild kills, and a surprisingly committed performance from Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, Young Guns). We talk mad scientists, cheesy 90s CGI, and why the bats in this movie deserve their own villain origin story. But that's not all—we also revisit Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later, where Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode... again. Is her PTSD legit this time or just another cash-in? We break down the Halloween franchise multiverse (yes, there are four timelines now), why H20 feels like a weird Scream spinoff, and how Josh Hartnett may have been the weakest link in the final girl's family tree.
The late 80's and early 90's saw a lot of movies about executed killers coming back for revenge but how many of those movies starred Lou Diamond Phillips as a cop tracking one down? Only one and that's the one we watched in this episode. That's right folks we're talking about The First Power from 1990!
Today we are sinking our teeth into Bats (1999), the creature feature where genetically modified bats terrorize a small Texas town while Lou Diamond Phillips tries to stop them. We talk 90s eco-horror tropes, unintentional comedy, government conspiracies, and why bats probably deserves better. Is it so-bad-it's-good or just... bats? Tune in and decide.Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wheel-of-horror/id1534102813 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3HnyAISG8Z8hvMFdSG60tE?si=9b785cf21c7f46a3 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@wheelofhorrorpodcast1802/videos Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wheel_of_horror/ Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/HorrorWheel
