Misery beneath the Miracle in East Asia (Cornell University Press, 2024) challenges prevailing views of the East Asian economic miracle. Existing scholarship has overlooked the severity, persistence, and harmful consequences of the social-welfare crises affecting the region. Dr. Arvid J. Lukauskas and Dr. Yumiko Shimabukuro fill this gap and put a major asterisk on East Asia's economic record. Combining big-picture analysis, abundant data, a dynamic interdisciplinary framework, and powerful human stories, they shed light on the social ills that governments have failed to address adequately, including low wages, child abuse, elderly poverty, and substandard housing. One of the major forces behind the multidimensional welfare crises is the region's productivist welfare strategy, which prioritizes economic growth while abandoning a robust social safety net, leaving the most vulnerable segments of society largely unprotected. Misery beneath the Miracle in East Asia brings the region into debates over the dangers of seeking growth at all costs that are currently embroiling the United States and other advanced industrialized countries. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. This episode is a followup from last week, as Tiffany guides us into the art of public speaking while explaining why evaluations are crucial in developing the impressive skills of speechmaking. For the big portion of this topic, we hear the feedback on Tiffany's speech (which you can find in the previous episode) from the other contestants from the Toastmasters where Tiffany receives reviews from more than ten people! Tiffany offers us helpful tips to keep in mind when receiving evaluations. For example, how not be overly critical, to not take feedbacks personally, and how constructive criticism can help us grow and improve as communicators. From Tiffany's toastmaster speech, the reviews are received with much praise and congratulatory remarks. The feedsbacks included comments such as how they enjoyed the choice in topic, speech structure and self disclosure, how eye opening, resilient, breathtaking, sincere and authentic the powerful personal story as a transwoman in the lens of diversity. Moreover, they applaud Tiffany's splendid performance, gestures and her use of vivid and colorful language and so on. Other critics included wanting more emotional connection from the speech, suggested to have a strong core message in the beginning to connect to the end, adding more humor to the speech, simplifying and speaking more slowly, and much more. Overall, the speech was a huge success and everyone who attended were looking forward to seeing more of Tiffany's public speech! Thank you Yumiko for the delightful review! And as always, we thank you for your support and for joining us time and time again! Remember, you are valued and deserve happiness. Thank you for joining Nicole and Gary for their TWD S11 E20 "What's Been Lost" Likes and Dislikes! This was a Carol episode, and you know how amazing she is! Especially when she's "Carol-ing"!!! Luck for us tonight's episode started where it left off last week, but unlucky for us Pamela Milton has an unexpected surprise for our group! The biggest questions of the episode are... will Lance Hornsby be a friend or foe after what he's been put through, what is the fate of Eugene, and what side will Yumiko be on? Thanks for listening!
