07DEC1941: As Japanese plans attacked in the early morning, Chief Petty Officer John Finn hurried to the airfield where he was responsible for maintaining the weapons of naval aircraft. As the American planes were shot up on the runway, Finn and his men began salvaging machine guns from the burning craft to provide some sort of defense. Finding a rolling platform used for training, CPO Finn attached a .50 caliber machine gun and positioned himself out in the open where he had the best view of enemy aircraft. For the next two hours, CPO Finn fired his weapon, offering resistance as the enemy fighters continued their attack. Only after being wounded 21 times and being ordered to receive medical attention did CPO Finn leave his weapon. Quickly treated, CPO Finn made his way back to the airfield where he helped to rearm the surviving aircraft to get back into the fight. For his brave and selfless acts that day, CPO John Finn would be awarded the first Medal of Honor in WWII.

In a shocking turn of events, ratings for S10E12 Walk With Us are way up from last week’s historic lows. It got a 1.23 in the 18-49 demographic, with 3.494 million viewers. This is up from last week‘s episode, which got a 0.92 in the 18-49 and 2.927 million viewers. That’s an increase of 0.31 in the 18-49 and 567,000 viewers, up 34 and 19% respectively. But what an episode NOT to have a corresponding episode of Talking Dead with it! Due to the Coronavirus scare, Talking Dead did not have an episode this week. AMC aired an episode of Norman Reedus’ Ride instead. This is the first time an episode of The Walking Dead hasn’t had a corresponding Talking Dead since Season 1 if you don’t count the “Survival Sunday” Season 8 finale episode, which aired directly after the Season 4 premiere of Fear the Walking Dead and featured cast from both shows. We could use your help in collecting feedback! Lately. it

Don’t worry, you still hear from me this week, but through voicemail instead of hosting the episode. An Exchange… We saw Alden and Luke exchanged for Lydia. I know that many of them didn’t want to give up Lydia, but what could they do? They owe it to Alden and Luke while keeping Lydia would not make any sense, since Alden and Luke would have most certainly been killed. Leave the baby alone! We see the coldness of Alpha and The Whisperers, with them leaving a crying baby for the walkers. I know this was probably difficult to see for a lot of people, myself included. I think she was testing them to see if they’d care. I thought the scene with Connie rescuing the baby and then trying to thwart off the walkers in the sorghum field (looked like corn, but the behind the scenes video calling it a sorghum field) was tense and I was noticeably scared for Connie. Daryl comes to her rescue, but other Hilltop people were behind him, including Tammy Rose and Earl, who eventually take the baby, to raise, I assume. Are we shipping Daryl and Connie? I’ve heard a lot of people shipping those two. I, honestly, never thought of that at the time, until I heard it said on Talking Dead. Now, I can’t stop thinking about it. If that happens, it’s about time! The Bounty One of the best aspects of the episode was The Kingdom’s side trip, to retrieve a projector bulb, so they can watch movies again. This was fun, inspiring, and a ray of hope in an otherwise depressing story. I needed that hope after some pretty depressing elements of this post-Rick era. Ezekiel, Jerry, and, of course, Carol light up the screen. Talking Through The Bridge! On this episode 84 of The Walking Dead Talk Through, Mark and I talk through The Walking Dead Season 9 Episode 2, which is titled The Bridge. It was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer. We both loved this one and are happy about the direction the show is going so far. Poor Aaron… There’s a great action sequence at the lumber camp, featuring the log rolling, a work accident, some great melee combat and Rick shooting the logs free and the awesome destruction unleashed as a result. Aaron’s arm is gruesomely crushed, with flesh and bone showing. Enid is forced to think on her feet and do what she had no choice to do and amputate Aaron’s arm, with Siddiq being back at home dealing with a bug that’s hit Alexandria. For me, this was one of the best sequences on the show in recent seasons, with outstanding special effects and makeup to make Aaron’s injury so realistic. I was very impressed with these scenes, although some of the backstory was a little sketchy. Why would they put slacker Justin in charge of that second siren post? Did he get what he deserved at the end of the episode? I think so! Love… Exciting and New! Friendships strained… We saw some couples this episode, old and new. New couples Jerry and Nabila, Ezekiel and Carol, Anne and Gabriel, established couple (but new to us) Tammy Rose and Earl and, of course, staples Team Richonne! Were you surprised about Anne and Gabriel? Let’s not forget the strained friendships of Rick and Daryl, Michonne and Maggie, and Maggie and Jesus (to a lesser extent). I look forward to how these develop – how many will survive? Ratings are way down… As you can see from these rating and viewer charts, created by me, you’ll see that the 18-49 rating hit an all-new low at 1.98, and the 4.937 million is the lowest since S1E4 Vatos. It is normal for ratings for the second episode to be lower than the premiere, but the decline cannot be denied. To contrast, last week got a 2.49 in the 18-49 with 6.076 million viewers. Vincent Feldman/June 21, 2014 Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Vincent Feldman. Despite living in Washington, DC for a few years while attending college, photographer Vincent Feldman has lived his entire life in the city of Philadelphia. It is this life-long relationship with the Philly that lead to his passion for the city, its neighborhoods, its endangered (and often lost) architecture, and — perhaps most crucially — its people. Not only does Feldman document the dilapidated but once glorious buildings of Philadelphia (many gone, with others soon to vanish from the landscape), but the effect of these buildings on the lives of the people Feldman sees as often being manipulated (usually to their detriment) by forces more powerful than them. Coming from a family of immigrants (Jewish and Italian) with a distrust of “the State,” Feldman inherited both disdain and engagement. Punk and later hardcore punk came to Feldman as a natural, almost pre-ordained fit. He wrote most of the music for the ‘80s HC band Legitimate Reason (featuring previous interview subject John Finn), who had their 7” EP recorded at the famous Inner Ear Studios by Eli Janney. While living in Washington, DC, Feldman became a roadie for the just-formed Shudder To Think, which got him touring the U.S. and later Europe. Seeing the contrast between the disused, abandoned buildings in Philly and the thriving, vibrant squat scene in Europe inspired Feldman to document the vanishing buildings of Philadelphia and show how they were once used. While Feldman ultimately moved away from music, he often cites his experiences in the HC punk scene as serving as some of the inspiration for his work. Earlier in 2014, Paul Dry Books published Feldman’s stunning book City Abandoned to great acclaim. As a witness to the MOVE catastrophe of 1985 and the disregard for some of Philadelphia’s finest architecture, Vincent Feldman has seen this city at its worst. And yet, even now, he uses his art to inspire positive action; he bears witness. You can read more about Vincent Feldman’s book City Abandoned here at the Paul Dry Books website. Thanks to Will Schofield over at Paul Dry. City Abandoned may be purchased at both the Paul Dry Books website or, perhaps more conveniently, here at Amazon.com. John Finn of Legitimate Reason and Stepping Razor (guest interviewed by Stacey Finney)/May 31, 2014 Stacey Finney guest interviews John Finn of the bands Legitimate Reason and Stepping Razor. John was born in the lower Northeast section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania known as Feltonville, eventually moving to the Mayfair section of the city. John spent his formative years playing ball on his street with the other local kids and protecting their playground turf. John talks about the discipline and respect he gained as a result of his Catholic School education and the positive influence it had on him personally. John discusses his experiences as a kid diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and how the nuns handled his active behavior by tying him to a chair with an electrical cord as a means to keep him seated. He was consequently labeled early on as Beelzebub by his former nuns and even given his own private classroom in which his daily lessons were delivered one-on-one. John discusses the early influences that led him into the Philly hardcore music scene and how he became involved in his bands, Legitimate Reason and Stepping Razor, in addition to some of the escapades that ensued during his tenures in these bands. Both of John’s bands opened for the likes of the Cro Mags and Government Issue as well as some other well known groups which are mentioned in the interview. John talks very comically about his ongoing conflicts with the band Circle of Shit and how they eventually became friends. He also shares some other follies, such as when he and friends “kidnapped” a metalhead coworker to keep him safe during a fight that broke out at a house party. Some of John’s interactions with skinheads and his anti-racist views are brought up, providing valuable perspective on those volatile times in the Philadelphia HC punk scene.
