On this episode of The Game of Nerds podcast, I'm sitting down with our resident zombie expert and my "work-husband," Jon Hicks, to talk about our adventures on the convention floor. Before Andy was on the floor doing conventions with me, the rule was Jon had to be going to the convention for me to go. So over the past six years, we've racked up a lot of convention time between the two of us. As SDCC@Home 2021 begins this weekend, it only seemed fitting for Jon and me to talk about our convention experiences as well as tips and tricks. Before we jump into conventions, though, Jon gives us the low down on the Pokemon card situation at Target and how he's deep into old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries. I'm convinced our parents just showed us the show to behave and not do something crazy with friends. As we begin chatting about conventions, we accidentally started with the best/worst example. Heroes and Villians, Fan Fest, or Walker Stalker Con, whatever you want to call it, is a prime example of how a convention with a great idea can turn bad quickly. It's considered the Fyre Festival of conventions. Here at The Game of Nerds, we've reported multiple times on Fan Fest Events, the legal trouble of its own James Frazier, and the outcome of the now-defunct convention. But there are plenty of great conventions to talk about, San Diego Comic-Con is the most popular out of all of it. It's over 50 years old, and Jon happens to be the only one on staff who has actually attended the convention. The Game of Nerds has applied for press passes for 8 years now only to be denied by new rules and requirements every year. We talk about Jon's venture to SDCC and how it's basically impossible to do everything. Just like all the movies and shows depict, people are lining up days in advance to camp out for a single panel at Hall H. If you are too busy camping you can't really do anything else the con has to offer. Many convention attendees will get worried if they are missing days, but Jon assures listeners that there is usually so much going on and around the convention that you don't really have to worry if you are missing tickets. Jon and I detail how some of these larger conventions work via lotteries for tickets, panels, and booths. This is when having a team or a system is extremely helpful. While Jon says getting the tickets for SDCC was the best moment of his life, it was the most stressful. He only got his tickets by sheer luck and friend's helping. Would he do it again? For him, once was enough. SDCC is for the die-hard fans and for those there to make money. Larges Conventions like SDCC are known for vendors having special convention exclusives or limited amounts. Some people strictly follow these conventions to pick up the merchandise to turn around a "flip" it for profit. If you've ever heard us say "Fuck Flippers," this is where the word comes from. It's when someone buys something to sell it for more profit. This is where I discuss my problem with SDCC and how I feel it's nothing but a money grab. While it's supposed to be a fan and media event, both these groups of people aren't being represented well. Tickets are limited for fans, and the media teams who are getting "free tickets" don't even care about the event. The pandemic was a doozy for everyone, and the conventions scene is no different. Many conventions weren't sure they were going to see the light of day again. So we are aware that conventions are trying to make their money back and that conventions are indeed a luxury. That doesn't mean that they can't be accessible to everyone. Reed Pop and Wizard World were two companies that quickly pivoted when the pandemic shut down conventions. They both started offering online panels and memberships for exclusive access to events. This system seems to be working for them as people decide whether they are ready to return to unperson events. We go on to talk about ECCC or Emerald City Comic-Con.

Surprise guest James Frazier, founder of Walker Stalker Con, joins me this episode. As most of you guys know, I moderated panels for WSC throughout its run, meeting most of the Walking Dead actors and many of you listeners around the country and overseas. It was quite the experience, and I’m grateful to James for putting it together. As you might also know, the whole thing fell apart at the end, and a lot of people are still owed refunds and payments. And James is here to talk about all facets of Walker Stalker Con: how it started, what it was like to run it, what went wrong, and what recourse people who were affected may have. FEAR ME: The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead & Preacher Podcast
Walkers, walkers everwhere. Our crew is battling wave after wave of dead, and its taking a toll, both mentally and physically. According to Lydia its not Alpha, but while we're on the subject, Alpha isn't happy. In one of the scarier episodes to come from The Walking Dead in a while, Michonne and crew have to bow down once again to keep the peace. Crossing the border has its consquences. Negan also joins the fight for better or worse. We had a great time discussing this one and got into some news about Walker Stalker Con at the start. Not the greatest news, but probably something that needed to happen. Please write in and let us know how you're liking the new season of #TheWalkingDead.
In Episode #2: Jim and A.Ron flex their creative muscles and get into the holiday spirit by carving a bulbous orange vegetable. The spirits of darkness are appeased. They discuss their complicated upbringing preventing them from carving pumpkins sooner; the big things happening with business podcasts; ratings and reviews on iTunes; the guys anticipate the first ever Walker Stalker Con; Jim & A.Ron are incredulous about how incredulous the protagonist of Outlander is about sexism; J&A suffer with being perfectionists; and they search for podcast recommendations. Club members get access to a live recording of Lunch with Jim & A.Ron every Friday at 1pm, where members get to ask questions in real time. On the fifth anniversary of Lunch with Jim & A.Ron, we started reheating previous lunch episodes and making them available to the public for the first time. FEAR ME: The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead & Preacher Podcast
Well, I feel we can at least say this show has been very consistent this season. Not many episodes have really stood out to be great... and this one had that same follow through. Our gang is continuing the trek to find a landing pad and hits a wall in the last episode. This forces them to reconnect with thier new arch nemisis, who comes with preserves. At least, at least if nothing else, they may be able to save Lucy, which they did not try before. We wont even mention what happens at the end, mainly b/c we're still trying ot figure it out. Next week #TheWalkingDead is back in force which we will be covering, and the week after that, Walker Stalker Con will be here in Atlanta. Let us know if your going @FearMePodcast, fearme@gmail.com, www.facebook.com/FearMePodcast/
If you loved Bob's depth and intensity in AMC's "The Walking Dead", D'Angelo's street-wise swag in HBO's "The Wire", and Chris's cool sarcasm in HBO's "The Deuce", you must love Lawrence Gilliard Jr. as much as we do. In this interview with the New York/Baltimore native, we discuss Lawrence's transition from studying music to becoming an actor, which of his scenes he's most proud of, his #1 tip for aspiring actors, what it's like for him to meet fans, the one role he would not accept, and whether he has an ideal role. To learn more about this veteran actor, who also starred in "Gangs of New York", "The Beast", "Army Wives", "Graceland", and much more... tune in! If you ever have a chance to meet Lawrence at a comic con, make sure you do. He's not only witty; he takes time to make his fans feel special. His next appearance will be at Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta, October 18-20, 2019. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sexandhorror/message

Talking Through People Like Us We are back! Fear the Walking Dead Through is back with an analysis of Fear the Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 9, which is titled People Like Us. It was written by supervising producer Anna Fishko and directed by Magnus Martens. The story of the mid-season premiere, itself, was decent. The special effects, on the other hand, were among the worst we have seen in the franchise. Of course, we were warned, but there’s nothing like the actual episode to bring out more detail. Ratings were down… People Like Us got a 0.68 in the 18-49 demographic, with 1.878 million viewers, which is down from the mid-season finale‘s 0.73 and 2.320 million viewers. Charts below. Deborah Munies - I'm in the hot seat today giving you the inside scoop! In this episode of Let's Figure It Out, my longtime friend Eric Nordhoff is taking over the podcast. He's pulling back the curtain and interviewing me. I had a chance to feel what it's like to be on the other side (yikes!). You may remember Eric from Podcast 6. He's a courageous entrepreneur who is having success monitizing his creativity. Most notably, you may know him as the Co-Founder of Walker Stalker Con, now called Fan Fest, an Inc Fortune 500 company. Eric takes me on a walk down memory lane and to uncover how I figured out my life...so far! It was fun to chat with my my friend as he helped me to tell my story. Eric Nordhoff - Eric and I talk about not having regrets, living dangerously, finding out what you're capable of, and how there's always a way to find more time to pursue your passions. If you want to take a chance on YOU, this is your podcast. Today on Let's Figure It Out you'll meet Eric Nordhoff. You may know him as the Co-Founder of Walker Stalker Con, now called Fan Fest, an Inc Fortune 500 company. He is a courageous innovator, creator, entrepreneur and business inventor who is having success monetizing his creativity. Eric shares with us his professional journey and how he's followed fun and listened to his gut to pursue what some may call an unconventional career path. Eric's career began managing domestic and international sales and marketing at christian entertainment companies for a decade, touting artists like Amy Grant, Sixpence None the Richer, Michael W. Smith and Take 6. In 2008 he had the foresight to see how working in the music industry was going to change with the evolution of iTunes and online music. He saw the growing trend of Amazon and Ebay and leveraged his music relationships to create new online sales businesses. He was an early adopter of podcasts, seeing their future in business development, realizing he could leverage them to help grow his sales team. In 2013, he took a love of the TV show "The Walking Dead" and together with James Frazier, founded The Walker Stalkers Podcast for fans of the TV Show. It evolved into a successful convention business - Walker Stalker Con (and it's affiliated Heroes & Villains Fan Fest) serving 500,000+ people annually. The company, Fan Fest, is now an Inc. 500 company. A heads up, Eric and I have known each other since high school so you'll get an inside peek into two "young" friends reconnecting. I was excited to feature him on the podcast to share with you how he figured out how to monetize his creativity, continue evolving, and be one step ahead of the trends. Last weekend while Lucy and Lara were hosting the podcast (and doing an amazing job at it, I might add), I was at Walker Stalker Nashville hosting a great panel with a bunch of the cast members of FTWD, including Kevin Zegers (Mel), Daniel Sharman (Troy), Danay Garcia (Luciana), Jenna Elfman (Naomi), Colman Domingo (Strand), and Kim Dickens (Madison). It was awesome, and I'm glad to be able to present it to you now. Enjoy! This podcast is made possible by listeners like you (and you too) who have supported us at patreon.com/jasonandkaren. Thanks to all you guys! This episode brought to you by: Walker Stalker Con!: As a fan of TWD and FTWD, you owe it to yourself to get out to one of these, meet the stars of the show, meet me :) and hang out with other fans. Beware of the ticks! Woody went all "using the force" throwing the first pitch at the Sounds game. Gender Wars. The Preds helped Jim clean his garage. Woody and Jim will be at Walker Stalker Con hosting a panel with the Walking Dead's Abraham (Michael Cudlitz). Fancy weddings lead to divorce.
On this episode of Rhodes to Success I interview Jason Cabassi who is the host of the number one fan podcast for AMC's hit TV show The Walking Dead. Jason's show The Walking Dead ‘Cast has 25,000 listeners per episode and this week we pick his brain on how to grow an audience for your podcast, have fun with your show, and get a ton of downloads. Main Questions Asked - When did you start podcasting? - What was your vision for the your Walking Dead ‘Cast show? - Where does your desire to have an audience come from? - Did your show start out with segments and sound effects or just a conversation between you and Karen? - Did you teach yourself postproduction and editing as you went? - How do you get people to engage? - What is the reason your show became so popular over the years? - What is the process of getting featured on iTunes? - How did you make the celebrity interviews happen? - How did you get into Walker Stalker Con? - Talk about your vision for the future and how you see this being a career. Key Lessons Learned - The Walking Dead ‘Cast started a few months before The Walking Dead TV show actually aired. - The show modeled itself of the Jay and Jack Lost podcast, which had segments like show recap and listener feedback. Engagement, Downloads, and iTunes - Jason chose not to address that the show had a small audience in the beginning and acted as though they had a good size audience from the start. - In the beginning he asked his friends to leave reviews, write and call in to jumpstart engagement. - Jason has an eye on trying to reach people who might not find the show on iTunes. In the early days he would get involved in message boards and mention the podcast in forums. - Jason wrote to Apple and said he's the number one Walking Dead podcast and would love to talk about any promotional ideas. Apple wrote back! - There is no secret to high downloads, it's all about producing great content. - Jason made friends with other Walking Dead podcasters (rather than avoiding the completion as many might do.) - He often does collaborations and guests on other shows. Making Celebrity Interviews Happen - Jason reached out to all the publicists of the actors on the show in season one in order to get celebrity interviews. - New actors are more likely to do interviews than more established actors. - When you reach out to more people, make sure to tell them who you've already interviewed and use that as leverage. - Be persistent. If you don't get a response just keep writing back every month and always be positive. - Publicists generally respect persistence and often really do keep your contact details for a later date. Preparing for Interviews - Be prepared for your podcast interviews and think what you would genuinely be curious about if you were just sitting with the person having a drink. - Write 12-15 questions beforehand and try to keep it conversational and not sound too polished (not sounding like a real person.) - The questions are as a safety net but let conversations go into other areas - Let the interviewee speak and don't step on their answers. In this episode we interview the author of Survivor Max: Too Smart to Die - Davi Barker. We also talk a little more about Walkerstalkercon and our new logo we've been secretly working on. Look for merchandise bearing the new logo soon including a revamped website. We find out what killed Patrick, well, kinda, sorta. It's some sort of infection that has also hit Karen. The prison is not safe anymore as anyone can turn into a walker at any time. The walkers are forcing down the fence and Rick sacrifices his pigs to prevent a collapse. In the end, Rick puts on his gun belt and hands Carl his old gun back. My favorite scene was the emotional breakdown of Michonne Our favorite disgusting scene was the walker face being squished against the fence. Two mysteries that still need to be unravelled: Who is feeding rats to the walkers. Who burned the infected bodies in the last scene. Reminder, we'll be at Walkerstalkercon this November 1st, in Atlanta. Stay tuned to our podcast to hear about our adventures there. Listen for free on iTunes. If you like the show, give us a rating there.
Don't forget to tune in this Sunday Oct 13 for the season 4 premier of The Walking Dead. Then listen to our show, The Walking Dead Girl podcast, right after for our walk through review, fun discussions and predictions. In this episode of our show: We give a summary of our trip to Universal Studios, Halloween Horror Nights. We had an awesome time and got sucked into the world of The Walking Dead. We read some fun listener email. We review season 3, episode 9 of TWD. We see Daryl leaving the group to run off into the woods with his brother - good luck! Rick is losing control of his mind and hallucinates images of Lori. This causes him to scare off Tyresse and his group. Even though we tried hard to finish our season 3 reviews before the start of season 4, we couldn't make it. Something to do with high school homework... No fear. We will continue our season 3 reviews and finish them over the next few weeks. Reminder that you can still buy tickets for Walker Stalker Con. We'll be there to bring you all the news from the event into our podcast. Like our Facebook page to see photos of the event, when they're available.
We have some great news. We're both going to the Walker Stalker Con! We'll bring you news from the convention on our show. In this episode 8 (the mid-season finale) of Season 3, we see the introduction of some new characters to The Walking Dead. Mainly Tyreese and Sasha. They arrive at the prison and Carl takes care of them just like Rick would. Rick and Daryl bring Michonne along to attack Woodbury and rescue Glenn and Maggie. They are successful, but in the wake of the battle, they lose Daryl and Michonne hits the governor where it hurts the most...
