Fogo Island blacksmith Marc Fiset sets up his workshop at the Central MinEx Conference in Gander
Send us a textIn this episode we investigate a strange artifact from Maine's past, a horseshoe supposedly forged by a blacksmith in Wiscasset in the 1860s. The horseshoe, made from a strange, unknown metal was said to bring either good luck or terrible misfortune to the owner, and ended in total tragedy for the man who made it. What is this strange object? Is it really cursed? And how is it changing after one hundred and fifty years?Content Warning: mysterious metals, obsession, addiction, animal cruelty and abuse, domestic violence, assault, slander, curses, misfortune, aliens, living metalsHost: Chris EstesWriter: Chris EstesSenior Investigator: Mark MercierSound Design: Chris EstesSupport the showFollow us on social media:Instagram: MalevolentMaineFacebook: MalevolentMaineTwitter: @MalevolentMainePatreon: Join the Malevolent MobDon't forget to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts by scrolling down to the bottom our or show page and tapping "Write a Review".
Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every single day. A shout-out today goes to David and Patti Fredrickson from Lake City, MN. Thank you both for your kind email, for be grateful listeners, and for becoming month partners. We cannot do this without you. Be like the Fredrickson's and listen daily with your spouse! Today we premiere the next lesson in my newest study for men, titled Blacksmith's Discipline. If you'd like to join me for this click the link to receive notifications and purchase the study book that accompanies the study today. We have four more weeks to go. Today, we're reading Mark 1:12-13: The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.— Mark 1:12-13 The moment Jesus is baptized—He's launched into battle. No time to bask in the glory of that voice from heaven. No pause. No pat on the back. The same Spirit that descended like a dove drives him into the wilderness. And what waits for him there? Satan. Temptation. Wild animals. Isolation. It's easy to think that following God should lead to peace, comfort, clarity. But here—obedience leads Jesus into hardship. Before Jesus ever preached a word, He had to fight a war. This wilderness moment matters. Jesus steps into the mess of temptation not because He had to—but because we do. He willingly walks into the fire so He could stand in it with us. He faces Satan head-on, not as a show of power, but as a statement of solidarity. The Son of God chose to suffer first. And Mark tells it fast—just two verses. No dialogue. No breakdown of the temptation. Just this: He was tempted, He endured, He was not alone. God doesn't abandon us in the wilderness—He strengthens us there. You may feel like you're walking through your own desert right now. Maybe you're facing temptation, loneliness, or attack. But take this to heart: Jesus has walked that road, and He's walking it with you now. #WildernessFaith, #JesusFightsFirst, #Mark11213 ASK THIS: What “wilderness” are you currently facing? How do you typically respond to spiritual battles? What does this passage teach you about God's presence in trials? In what ways can you rely more on the Spirit during temptation? DO THIS: Walk into your wilderness today with confidence—Jesus has already been there, and He's walking with you now. PRAY THIS: Jesus, thank you for walking into the wilderness before me. Help me to see your presence in my hardest moments and trust your strength in my weakness. Amen. PLAY THIS: Battle Belongs.
Have we found the oldest profession in the world? Yes we have... our guest today is Ian, who is a Blacksmith, a job which first dates back to over 5000 years ago. He is a master of his craft, who spends his days at his forge, heating metal to ridiculous temperatures, and shaping them into beautiful and practical things. He also makes random things like medieval guillotines, metal flowers, and ornate iron gates. The good news is, Ian still has all 10 fingers, which after listening to this episode, will surprise you. ☀️Come and see us at Pub in the Park on 18th May (Marlow) or 1st June (London)! 4-22-25 Tonight we're talking with Arne Defurne, owner and head meadmaker of Clockwork Bee Mead in Antwerp, Belgium. Arne has a nano-meadery that is growing, and makes some pretty ‘ok' mead, producing mostly dry and off-dry meads, which is uncommon. We will dig into this and see what Arne is up to over there. Back in 2019, Arne came to the 2 first European meadmakers conferences and at the end of the second one was told to bring his own mead next time. Little did they know he had started making first batch right before leaving for EMMAcon. Arne is one of the people behind European meadmakers Association and worked on the just launched realmead certification program in Europe. It was 2019 and Arne did not have a pico meadery but a shower meadery (see photo to the right). He had a separate spare shower where he installed a rack where all fermentation was done. In 2020 he entered in the Mead Madness Cup home competition in Poland, but due to covid EMMcon was canceled and the Mead Madness Cup was an online medal ceremony and Arne won 2 gold medals. From then on the hobby became too expensive (he made more than 15 different meads in 1 year) and he started as a gypsy meadery at the Blacksmith's Meadery. From a mead enthusiast to home meadmaking spiraling out of control, and two years ago launching the first Belgian gypsy meadery under the guidance of the Blacksmith's Meadery. Driven by a passion for intricate flavor combinations, Arne's goal is to reintroduce this ancient beverage to modern audiences with a fresh twist. As a mead maker, he focuses on crafting what he loves to drink. He's deeply intrigued by how different flavors interact and how to blend them effectively. This curiosity leads him to explore methods that allows him to elegantly and fully integrate these flavor profiles into his meads. As a result, his products are uniquely positioned as semi-dry and dry meads, setting them apart from the more typical sweeter options. As a certified Belgian craft producer, Arne uses only the finest local ingredients and honey sourced from controlled European origins, resulting in high-quality meads that have already earned several awards. Send us a textThis is a disjointed ramble about some stories from the Isle of Wight, mainly from the 1960s. A murder at the Blacksmith's Arms, A murder at Carisbrooke, some possible paranormal stories, some local history and some aircraft crashes on the chalk Downs.I usually read up on the stories making a few notes beforehand and then write them and post them in a day so I am afraid they are not that well produced or professional. This is a one person attempt to create a podcast and I do not have time to edit or record more than one take.

I remember after doing TV news for 25 years, I think I was in something of a rut. I wasn't getting the joy I would get in the early days of TV news, and I finally had to leave TV news to start this public relations firm and podcast network. I'm so overjoyed that finally, maybe God pushed me and I took that leap. It's dangerous to take that leap, but my next two guests can talk about getting Zesty. Dr. Alex Golden and Megan Blacksmith are in the studio.
Vocalization of Blacksmith tree frog near a river source in the early morning of a full moon, in Votorantim, Brazil. Recorded by Angélica Felício da Costa.
This composition reimagines the call of the blacksmith tree frog as illuminating the night sky in an ecological park in Brazil, as if the night were otherwise silent, and the frogs were painting the sky like a canvas with their calls. Four channels of heavily-effected, sparkling frog calls interplay with one another, as the "real" frog calls periodically fade up and down, adding a dreamlike rhythmic pulse into the piece. The piece was composed entirely on a Torso S-4 sampler, and every sound is derived from the original source recording. Blacksmith tree frogs in Brazil reimagined by Cities and Memory.

Continuing to avoid human men, we're talking about Kidnapped by the Krampus by Emily Shore this week. Journalist Twyla is sent to Krampus World to see if she can uncover whether or not the elusive millionaire is actually real. Even when Krampus kidnaps her, she's not convinced he's real. She just thinks he's dedicated to that costume. Krampus, on the other hand, is in a bind (and not the kind he likes to put Twyla in). Twyla seems to be his last hope to break a curse slowly turning his heart to ice. Also Discussed: the new Superman trailer and all the Cleveland shots (exclamation point!), Veronica's upcoming interview with MIT, and how we're not exactly in the Christmas spirit. At this point you've probably heard Andy Williams say it 500 times…it's the most wonderful time of the year and in the spirit of Christmas Camp we've gone into some deep cut low budget yuletide filmmaking that isn't without some imagination alongside some tediousness. Maybe it felt so dragging because we're moving so fast in our technological world, man. Maybe René Cardona's 1959 film “SANTA CLAUS or SANTA CLAUS VS THE DEVIL” starring José Elías Moreno and José Luis Aguirre is a gift from Mexico to the world in the name of goodness and good cheer and we all need to take our time and soak it in and admire the patience required of peace on Earth and good will towards men. Santa Claus, from his space cloud town antagonizes a demon called Pitch. With the help of enslaved children as well as his live-in lovers, Merlyn and Mr. Blacksmith, Santa attempts get Christmas handled before the demon corrupts all the children. Pitch does corrupt three kids but you completely understand them and are on their side. Santa should truly be shot in the streets like a health insurance CEO for all the child enslavement he's doing in this movie. It doesn't matter that he has super computers with big luscious lips on them. Lips that can do lots of things. While working for the Treasury Department, Ely S. Parker met someone who would become a big part of much of the rest of his life – Ulysses S. Grant. It was through this connection that Parker gained a good deal of power, and cemented a controversial legacy. Ely S. Parker was instrumental in both the creation of President President Ulysses S. Grant's “peace policy." Parker was Seneca, and he was the first Indigenous person to be placed in a cabinet-level position in the U.S. and the first Indigenous person to serve as Commissioner of Indian Affairs. David and Tamler share a few brief thoughts on the election and then raise some questions about Tucker Carlson being attacked by a demon as he slept in the woods with his wife and four dogs (still don't believe in ghosts, people?). In the main segment we talk about one of the most popular measures in social psychology – the cognitive reflection test (CRT). Originally designed to identify differences in people's ability to employ reflection (system 2) to override their initial intuition (system 1), this three-item measure has mushroomed into its own industry with researchers linking CRT scores to job performance, religious belief, conspiracy theorizing and more. But what psychological attribute is this test supposed to measure exactly, and how can we determine its validity? And has the dual process system 1/system 2 framework outlived its usefulness? Tucker Carlson was totally mauled by a demon and not scratched by his dogs [youtube.com] Frederick, S. (2005). Cognitive reflection and decision making. Today, the Hong Kong Philharmonic is one of the world's great symphony orchestras. But when John Duffus landed in Hong Kong in 1979 as the Philharmonic's general manager–its fifth in as many years–he quickly learned just how much work needed to be done to make a Western symphony orchestra work in a majority Chinese city. John Duffus's memoir Backstage in Hong Kong: A Life with the Philharmonic, Broadway Musicals and Classical Superstars (Blacksmith: 2024) charts his life from running the Philharmonic, bringing acts like the Three Tenors and Cats to Asia, and his thoughts on the Hong Kong Cultural Center and the West Kowloon Cultural District. John joins the show today to explain what the general manager of an orchestra actually does, the trickiest problems he had to solve in Hong Kong and China, and his thoughts on whether Hong Kong is truly a “cultural wasteland.” You can find more reviews, excerpts, interviews, and essays at The Asian Review of Books, including its review of Backstage in Hong Kong. Joshua Miller from Proofpoint is discussing their work on "Best Laid Plans: TA453 Targets Religious Figure with Fake Podcast Invite Delivering New BlackSmith Malware Toolset." Proofpoint identified Iranian threat actor TA453 targeting a prominent Jewish figure with a fake podcast interview invitation, using a benign email to build trust before sending a malicious link. The attack attempted to deliver new malware called BlackSmith, containing a PowerShell trojan dubbed AnvilEcho, designed for intelligence gathering and exfiltration. This malware consolidates all of TA453's known capabilities into a single script rather than the previously used modular approach.
