#84: This week we bring you a very special bonus episode featuring the story of Randy Beard, one of the attendees at the 2023 Mobilize Recovery Conference in Washington D.C. While at the conference, Bryce opened up a space for folks to share their stories and tell us what brought them to Mobilize. He was able to connect with Randy, a Maine native who was attending the conference, and capture his story. Randy is a person in recovery, who struggled with substance use disorder for 36 years and spent 25 years as part of the unhoused community. During this profoundly moving conversation with Randy, we discuss:- The two people who checked on Randy everyday and offered him solutions when no one else was interested in helping. - The celebration of life that turned into a 1,000 person event and eventually led him to attend Mobilize Recovery in Las Vegas.- The thought that there are 22 million people in recovery in the U.S., and if we could all save just one life, that's a lot of lives changed.- Why he goes back to the homeless encampments and shows people unconditional love: because not having that himself was like quick sand; the more you struggle the more you sink.- Being able to see the light come on in someone's eyes. For Randy, there is nothing more rewarding.- A message to the parents and loved ones of folks who battle substance use disorder.Check out the Recover2gether Facebook group, a group started by people in recovery to support each other and recognize the loved ones we have lost. The BYU-Idaho devotional speaker for Nov. 24 was Randy Beard. He is the information technology platform services manager at BYU-Idaho and has worked on campus since 1997. In the devotional, Beard focused on the importance of becoming. “A process of becoming leads us one step at a time to the end goal of being. When I speak of becoming, I’m talking about a transformation inside that makes us a different person, not just saying or doing. A person can say something without believing or meaning it. We can even do the right thing without that action being driven by righteous intent or feelings, but positive outcomes of words and actions will come naturally as we strive to become,” Beard said. https://www.byui.edu/radio/becoming-a-devotional-by-randy-beard

Before David became king, he had to deal with an authority that made his life very difficult. He had to wait more than twelve years from the time of his anointing to the time he was appointed king. David's example shows us ways to respond to the authorities in our lives.
We accept a shallow understanding of love too easily. God calls a husband and wife to unconditional love; without it a marriage will never be as fulfilling as God intends.
Not much is written of Enoch, but God smiled on him due to the nature of his walk with God. How will you walk with God this year, and will He be pleased?
A simple herdsman, Abel, brought a more acceptable gift of worship to God than his brother. Will there be growth in your worship of God this year?
Mary had a lot of questions in raising the Son of God, and He was her first child! Can you relate to feelings of uncertainty?
Not everyone will share your joys or understand what you're going through. We learn much from Mary about waiting on God.
The difficulties Mary faced in her future would be enough to take the song from many of us. But she chose to rejoice, which I find amazing.
You can see the passage on poster board in pertinent places wherever there is a crowd, and you smile knowingly at the truth of those words. You may even be able to quote the passage. But does the passage change the way you face life every day, and can you share its profound truth with searching people you encounter most days?
We are to be wise managers of the things we receive. When we do we please God, bring stability to our families, solidify our witness, and bring contentment to our lives.
God warns us about adopting the prevailing attitudes of our culture toward money. We are to make a conscious effort to follow God's counsel.
We live in the United States and follow the laws of our land. But as Christians our highest allegiance is to God, for we are part of His family and His kingdom. Strive to live in this reality every day.
Following Jesus doesn't remove temptations from us. So often things that tempt us seem to have our number. How do we find more victory in the realm of our weaknesses?
Forgiven...it's a treasured word to a follower of Jesus. We live in it and we practice it on a daily basis.
Prayer expresses our hearts: are we the subject or the subjects? Who do we live to please?
Praying begins with an awareness of the One we are speaking to. Everything we say in a prayer is impacted by our understanding of God.
We don't all have jobs in which we get to choose our coworkers. Most of us have fellow employees that are self-absorbed and/or unwilling to carry their load. What is a Christian in this situation to do?
People have some very different views about their jobs. Some say it's a necessary evil or just a paycheck. Some hate their jobs and count down the days until retirement. Others find their work to be very fulfilling. What is God's perspective on work?
The disciples watched Jesus minister to many people over the years. They knew He came to take care of others. But on this Passover they realized He came to minister to them. His hands on their feet spoke volumes. They didn't all respond the same.
Some people are always looking for something better than what they have. Contentment never remains. They are restless souls...always ready to wander and find the next great thing. Andrew was searching too.
These sisters had expectations of Jesus when their brother got very sick. In their minds, He came too late. Many people today have expectations of God/Jesus as well. He ministers to us in the midst of our expectations
Nicodemus was an analytical, scholarly type who came from a family of high achievers. Even with his educational, political, and spiritual accomplishments, he felt empty. He came to Jesus to have his questions answered, but left that night with far more.
The "disease to please" must be recognized for what it is, and God shows us how to overcome it.
There are occasions in any day to be offended by another person's words, actions, or lack thereof. The offense is felt, but what we do with it is our choice.
We don't say it out loud very often, but it's never far from our life core. All together now, "I like to be in control!" Why is this drive so strong? What does God teach us about this?
There are various things that contribute to our thoughts of not being able to measure up to a task. These can plague us for a lifetime without a "thought antidote" from someone we respect.
There are four essentials in using the gifts God gives us to serve Him.
God has given Jesus followers some incredible gifts to help us serve effectively in His kingdom and wherever we choose to live and work. Too few acknowledge these gifts, try to develop them, or even try to use them.
A look at Eve, the first mother.
We come to experience the presence of God together - to connect with God.
One of the things the first church was devoted to was prayer. Some of these prayers were in quiet moments alone and others were in group settings. Let's learn from some of the prayers in the early church.
The church is to be a place where in-depth friendships and life-long relationships are established. Romans 12:10 says that we are to be devoted to one another in brotherly love.
God is not interested in deeds of darkness because these are contrary to his very nature. The Bible says God is light and Jesus is the light of the world. Christians are called children of light. Just as the lampstand in the tabernacle gave light, we are to do the same.
Showbread literally means "bread of the face" or "presence bread". There is someone's presence that God enjoys. Can you guess whom?
God was very particular about the incense burned on His altar in the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle. The incense symbolized prayer - something God knows is to be treasured.
Most people would say there's not much to a tent. But God didn't design the tent they are thinking about. Several seemingly insignificant things made God's tent pretty special and teaches a valuable lesson about our Savior.
Not enough is said about finishing well in life. One man said, "Maturity is the ability to stay with a resolution long after the mood in which the resolution was made has left."
