On this episode of Women on the Line we chat with 44 Flats United (44FU) are a group of residents, former residents and supporters of public housing, organising against the Victorian State Government's decision to demolish the 44 high-rise commission flats and a growing number of walkups across Narrm (Melbourne). They are guided by the principle that not one person should be left worse off because of this government's decision to demolish their homes, that public housing needs to be defended and protected for current residents and future generations to come and that on the unceded sovereign land of First Peoples, no decisions should be made about the sale or leasing of public land until Treaties with First Peoples have been negotiated and finalised. We hear from R-Coo Tran, leader of 44 FU and Thi, a Vietnamese woman living in a housing estate in Richmond. We chat about the major problems with the estate demolition plan, what impact this is having on residents and how 44FU is organising on this campaign. Please note that parts of the conversation are in Vietnamese and have been translated and edited for brevity.

Students at the University of Otago say with the lack of jobs in the city, climbing rent prices and cost of power, they're struggling to make ends meet. The situation has got so bad, some are even leaving their flats altogether to move into vans and cars to sleep. The student's association has said a recent survey shows some students are resorting to sleeping rough. Bella Craig reports.
There are calls for a Rental Warrant of Fitness to ensure student flats in North Dunedin are actually complying with Healthy Homes Standards. Since July 1, the standards set out minimum requirements for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage - and all rental properties are supposed to be up to scratch. But some students at Otago Uni have said their flats are not only in appalling condition but issues like mould are making them sick, as some landlords carry out the healthy homes checks themselves. Bella Craig reports.
Vomit up the walls, buckets of faeces on the lawn and damp and mouldy inside. These are just some things students are confronted with in their North Dunedin flats. The local students association calls the area a "slum" and says some landlords don't even both checking if a property is habitable before they hand the keys over to the next set of tenants. Students have told Checkpoint the state of their accommodation has been having serious effects on their physical and mental health, and their studies. Bella Craig reports.
7:15 AM// Xen spoke with 44 Flats United (44FU), a group of residents, former residents and supporters of public housing, on this week's episode of Women on the Line. 44FU is organising against the Victorian State Government's decision to demolish the 44 high-rise commission flats and a growing number of walkups across Narrm (Melbourne). Xen interviewed R-Coo Tran, leader of 44 FU and Thi, a Vietnamese woman living in a housing estate in Richmond. In this interview they talked about the major problems with the estate demolition plan, what impact this is having on residents and how 44FU is organising on this campaign. Here is an excerpt from the episode that aired yesterday, 25 August 2025. 7:30 AM// Alexia Fuentes– Secretary General of Bayan Australia- a multi-sectoral alliance of progressive Filipino mass organisations campaigning for peaceful independence, speaking at the Pacific Peace Conference. Speaking on the panel 'Regional War Preparations: Talisman Sabre AUKUS and the Force Posture Agreements', Alexia discussed the rising militarism in the Indo-Pacific, focusing on the Philippines, as well as USA's strategic interests in the region, and the people's resistance against global imperialism. 7:45 AM// Tasnim Sammak is a Palestinian educator, researcher, and organiser gives a speech at a recent event “Radiance in Pain and Resilience: Public Lecture & Panel” organised by the Shifa project. The event brought together a number of Palestinian academics and advocates to celebrate the launch of Dr. Samah Jabr's new book Radiance in Pain and Resilience. Tasnim's work explores youth political subjectives and imaginaries through storytelling and community-based research. Her grandparents were displaced during the Nakba and she brings both scholarly and lived experience to her writing and advocacy. 8:00 AM// April Howard, film producer of the upcoming documentary Voices of the Pacific. April has recently attended the Plastics treaty negotiations in Geneva as an observer. She is here on the show to chat about the global threat of plastics in our oceans and the disprortionate impact on Pacific communities. We will also discuss the upcoming documentary and how it aims to spread awareness of plastic pollution in the Pacific. 8:15 AM// An interview by Indigenous Rights Radio, discussing bonded labour, which remains a widespread form of modern slavery in parts of Asia, particularly in countries like India and Bangladesh. The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, observed annually on August 23rd, honors the millions of men, women, and children who were subjected to the brutalities of transoceanic slavery, and commemorates the uprisings and resistance that led to its eventual abolition. It typically occurs when individuals are forced to work to repay a debt under exploitative conditions, often with little or no wages and no clear end to their obligation. Despite legal bans in many countries, weak enforcement and poverty continue to fuel this human rights violation.

For an estimated 5 million Americans, every beat of their heart can be heard in their ears as a constant "whooshing" sound making it difficult to sleep or concentrate and contributing to anxiety and depression. The condition is known as pulsatile tinnitus or P-T. Those who treat people with P-T say the condition can go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to its rarity and the difficulty in determining the underlying cause. On Wednesday's “Sound of Ideas” we will meet a local woman who developed the condition and the doctor who used a surgical procedure to help reduce most, but not all of the noise she was hearing. Also on the show, up first, we talk about the current labor dispute at a locally owned coffee chain and the recent closure of a café in Lakewood. Why are coffee shops currently flashpoints in the larger discussion regarding worker's and unionization? Finally, the Tennis in the Land tournament returns this weekend to the Flats. The tournament is now in its fifth year and brings to Cleveland some of the up and coming stars of the professional women's tennis tour. We'll talk to the tournament director about this year's event and plans.
After 2 weeks away in Australia we debrief the tour with our 'Man of the series' Jamie Garland Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

What was supposed to be a triumphant border crossing and final push from Niagara Falls back to the starting point became something entirely different when family health concerns required an immediate pivot. Hold onto your Fendi tags and your Zaddy energy, because Reza Farahan is in the boutique and the tea is steeped in Persian opulence! On this glitzy, hilarious, and wildly unfiltered sit-down when the Shahs of Sunset icon turns up the charm—and the shade. From BravoCon buzz to Beverly Hills realness, no subject is off limits. We kick things off with a love fest over interior wellness drinks and a lunch at Novikov that blossomed into a newfound friendship. Reza spills about Persian parties, being raised in a house filled with constant entertaining, and why he avoids some Beverly Hills events—something Pol' totally relates to from his Armenian background. And the chumps? Yes, Jeff Lewis gets a name drop, and the Billboard moment in NYC lights up the convo. The fashion talk hits hard when Reza reveals he's got racks of unworn designer looks (hello, $1500 silk shirts!)—but no, he's not donating them, honey. Those pieces are headed to BravoCon. Sorry, Pol', no couture hand-me-downs this time. They also reminisce about Yours, Mine & Ours and the hilarious, never-picked-up Persian Home Conversion pitch, complete with dead taxidermy and diamond water yoga. And yes, we want that show! Then it's all about SnowWhite90210 and the upcoming SnowBuBu dolls—yes, changeable bows, crowns, and even a recorded growl. The merch madness is real, and Patrik's hoping it'll buy him a house in the Flats. The convo dives deep into relationships: Reza shares about his decade-long marriage to husband Adam (14 years total!), their love of travel, and plans for a milestone anniversary trip or bash. We find out Adam's a chill, homebody Gemini while Reza is the social butterfly (and low-key Zaddy to their adorable dog, Marty). The episode explores balance in relationships, how opposites attract, and what it's like to be in the public eye with a partner who isn't about the spotlight. Then… the infamous coffee reading. Pol' picks up on some seriously spooky truths: Reza's planning a massive home renovation, which—shockingly—he hasn't told anyone publicly. He's floored as Pol' accurately senses energy shifts, spiritual anchors, and even a mysterious, sacred presence tied to the longtime previous homeowner. It's not a ghost, but it's definitely a vibe. Reza confirms it all—including a hidden hook with a “key to the safe” he found under a vanity drawer. Wild! The real estate talk turns educational as Reza drops wisdom from his Iranian family legacy and gives two golden rules: never lease and never pay credit card interest. Patrik confesses he's breaking both. There's also a juicy story about selling his husband's G-Wagon behind his back. (He thought it was just in for service. Spoiler: it wasn't.) From Gemini exes to Cartier rings, Van Cleef to juice cleanses, and even Patrik & Pol's 22-year love story and 89-country travel tradition—this episode is equal parts glam, LOL, heart, and hustle. And yes, Reza may or may not be filming for a top-secret show (Valley Persian Style?), but his wardrobe's ready for the spotlight, even if he can't confirm a thing. BravoCon, dolls, coffee grounds, and home makeovers—it's all happening. ✨ Don't miss Part 2—it only gets juicier.
He's the new leader on The Flats and he already has a plan. Yellow Jacket fans should be excited after hearing that plan from the new AD at Georgia Tech, Ryan Alpert. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In a new exhibition, Chicago's Floating Museum pays homage to Bronzeville's Mecca Flats through its Floating Monuments series. Built in 1892 as a hotel for visitors to the World's Fair, the Mecca Flats was later converted into apartments that served Chicago's African American community on the South Side. But by the 1950s, the building was demolished to make way for the Illinois Institute of Technology's S.R. Crown Hall. Now, the Floating Museum is honoring the Mecca Flats' contribution to Chicago's culture with an inflatable replica of the apartment building. Reset examines the history of the Mecca, the legacy of urban renewal and the displacement of Black residents with Faheem Majeed, artist and co-director of the Floating Museum, and Rebekah Coffman, curator of religion and community history architecture at the Chicago History Museum. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
Across the country in late June and early July, mulberry trees fruit, producing tasty berries enjoyed by humans, birds, and squirrels alike. You'll often see evidence of this on sidewalks in suburban neighborhoods stained purple by the fallen berries. But if these mulberry trees are hanging over water, fish are able to enjoy the fruits of their bounty as well. On today's episode we join guide Luke Annear of Freshwater Flats on an unnamed river in Southern Wisconsin in the search of carp and catfish. If you've ever wanted to catch a carp on the fly, and particularly on a mulberry fly, you can find Luke Annear on Instagram @freshwaterflats or on his website www.freshwaterflats.com. Many thanks to Patagonia and their improved Swiftcurrent waders for helping make this possible. We'll be back in two weeks with another episode.
In this special episode of Waypoints, host Jim Klug sits down with longtime friend, business partner, and fellow saltwater addict Ian Davis to talk about an incredible project nearly a decade in the making. Ian – a renowned angler, illustrator, fly designer, and global trip host – has just released his highly anticipated new book, A Passion for Bonefish. This landmark publication is the result of more than eight years of dedicated work, extensive travel, in-depth research, and conversations with some of the most legendary names in saltwater fly fishing. The book is more than just a technical guide or glossy photo journal. Rather, it's a heartfelt tribute to one of the most iconic fish in the sport and a celebration of the places, people, and culture that surround the pursuit of bonefish. As the co-owner of Yellow Dog Flyfishing (a sponsor of Waypoints), Ian brings a wealth of personal experience to the conversation - having chased bonefish across the globe for more than 30 years. In this episode, Ian and Jim dive deep into the evolution of the book, the insights it delivers, and the reasons why bonefish continue to capture the hearts of so many fly anglers. From gear tips and fly selection to destination highlights, conservation concerns, and bonefishing strategy, this conversation is a must-listen for anyone who love fishing the flats and those that plan to in the future. Whether you're new to bonefishing or a seasoned saltwater veteran, Ian's knowledge, stories, and passion for the species shine through in what promises to be one of the most engaging episodes of the season. After the success of the 2024 Belize and 2023 Baja Bluegrass events, we're excited to bring the experience back to Belize for 2025. Join us November 4–9 at El Pescador Lodge on Ambergris Caye for a five-night, all-inclusive fishing, beach, and bluegrass getaway—exclusively for 30 couples.Waypoints is brought to you by PatagoniaTo bring their gear to life, Patagonia is motivated by relentless curiosity and a passion for the wild. This portion of the trip was always going to be a question mark - what kind of biking will there be? Will it be fun? Will I be looking too much ahead to more obviously notable places like Toronto and Niagara Falls? Wolfe Island once again answers the call! So the ebike is a brick in the back of my Rav4, but it still works like a normal bike, so let's keep going! But a sudden realization may provide the solution to unlock all the battery goodness, just as another stunning discovery makes me realize, this trip's Plan B was all meant to be. Lake Ontario 2025 - Part 3 Hotel pack-up & quick diagnosis Morning in Oswego, NY. Realizes the motor cut-off is just a loose brake-lever magnet. Simple electrical/duct-tape fix brings the e-bike back to life. Route planning & launch Scraps the closed Cape Vincent ferry idea decides to drive the east shore of Lake Ontario, scouting state parks and quieter wildlife areas instead of sticking to busy parks. Lake-side stops Quick visit to Black Pond Wildlife Management Area (too restricted for bikes). Heads north to Westcott Beach State Park for a short beach walk, photos, and a quick battery test run. Drive to Canada Long detour to the Thousand Islands bridge (the only open crossing) because the south-end Wolf Island ferry is closed. Smooth Canadian customs stop; grabs ice cream and activates a Canadian eSIM for data. Kingston → Wolf Island ferry Misses the boat by two cars; 80-minute wait becomes a snack-and-people-watch session. Free ferry ride over; hotel is literally a block from the dock. Marysville check-in Rustic ground-floor room, lake view, no A/C needed. Drops bags, scopes dinner options (hotel café). Evening e-bike shake-down 14-mile out-and-back along Route 95 to the shuttered U.S. ferry dock on the south tip. Cruises at ~20 mph, marvels at wind turbines, farmland scenery, and micro-climates. Confirms minimal battery draw and re-affirms “twice the speed, half the effort” mantra. Wrap-up reflections Happy the brake glitch happened early—it forced a car assist and avoided being stranded. Wolf Island deemed a stellar, low-traffic cycling spot; sets intentions for next day's ride and keeps an eye on looming Toronto weather. We begin with controversy and farce over late trains, leading to accusations of international sabotage.Terry argues Calvin can't take a slagging and it almost goes completely out of hand as we have accusations of being a rat firing around the studio. We hear all about the Talking Bollox day out at an awards ceremony, from Terry arriving late due to a wardrobe malfunction of his own making, and him getting a fire exit confused with the jacks.Calvin has taken two holidays in everyone's book except his own, and it seems a few days in Spain no longer makes the cut as a holiday for podcasting's most travelled man.We wonder what's no longer acceptable over the age of 40, from tracksuits to avoiding crusts of bread, to saying yup.And we hear about the endless possibilities of being an identical twin and having a body double on hand to make life easier.Send all of your questions and comments to talkingbollox@goloudnow.com
