Logan and Aaron unpack one of the most powerful but underused sales strategies in remodeling: assignment selling. Originally coined by Marcus Sheridan, this method bridges the gap between marketing and sales—by arming prospects with the right information before they ever get on a call. You'll learn how to apply this approach in your own sales process—whether it's sending project walkthroughs before a meeting, using content to pre-qualify leads, or walking clients through your website in real-time. If you've been creating great content but aren't sure how to use it to actually close deals, this episode will show you how.  What You'll Learn What assignment selling is (and isn't) Why content belongs in your sales process, not just your marketing How to reduce unqualified leads and shorten the sales cycle What kinds of content work best at different sales stages How to personalize resources based on each prospect The difference between automations vs one-on-one communication How to ask clients to consume content—without sounding pushy  Key Timestamps 00:00 – What is assignment selling (and why does it matter)? 03:00 – Mapping your sales process to identify content gaps 06:30 – The difference between marketing automation and sales enablement 12:30 – Why production quality matters in sales content 18:00 – Examples of content that actually move the sale forward 25:00 – What happens when a prospect doesn't do their assignment 32:00 – Using your website like a live sales deck 37:00 – Emotional buy-in vs logical overload 43:00 – How to map your process and assign content that supports it 48:00 – How CGN uses this strategy in their own sales calls

EP259 - How to Attract Endless Customers Into Your MSP with Marcus Sheridan and Ian Luckett

IT Experts Podcast with Ian Luckett

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 16, 2025 46:44

In this episode of the IT Experts Podcast, I sit down with the brilliant Marcus Sheridan to unpack one of the biggest questions on every MSP owners mind how to attract endless customers into your MSP in a world that has completely changed the way it buys. This conversation is all about practical action. Marcus and I explore what is really going on in the heads of your buyers, why they now arrive eighty percent of the way through their buying journey before they ever speak to you, and how you can position your MSP as the firm that AI tools and humans are both recommending. If you are serious about growth and you want to understand how The MSP Growth Hub thinking lines up with the They Ask You Answer and Endless Customers approach, this episode will keep you thinking for a very long time.    Marcus starts by calling out what most MSP owners already feel, even if they have not put words to it. Your prospects are now digital first buyers. They want to feel informed, confident, and in control long before they ever book a call. They research on their own, they consume content at volume, they use AI tools, and they are desperate to avoid making a poor decision. The key insight is simple. You need to win the eighty percent of the journey that happens before the contact form. If that learning happens on someone else's site, or inside someone else's content, then that other provider will gain first contact, first conversation and very often the client. At The MSP Growth Hub we see this play out all the time when owners tell us that new clients feel like they already know us, because they have listened to the podcast, downloaded the Ultimate MSP Growth Guide, or spent time inside our content before any sales conversation takes place.    From there Marcus shares the five subjects that every serious buyer researches and that very few MSPs address clearly enough. Pricing and costs, problems and fears, comparisons, reviews including the negative ones, and who is the best at solving a particular problem. Every time a business leader searches for things like best MSP for professional services or reviews of local IT providers, AI and search tools are looking for helpful, honest content that actually answers the question. The MSP Growth Hub approach lines up with this perfectly. Your content has one main job. It needs to educate, de-risk and build trust. We spend time in the episode on the topic that makes most MSPs uncomfortable, the money conversation. Marcus explains that the first question any buyer has is roughly what is this going to cost and that this question acts as the gateway to the rest of the journey. When a website hides pricing, visitors feel frustrated, click away within seconds and carry on searching until they find a provider who will help them understand the drivers of cost and value. That insight alone, if applied with a bit of courage, can transform how your MSP generates leads.    Marcus then shares examples from his own swimming pool company, where a single pricing article that explained what affects the cost of a pool, without giving a rigid one size fits all number, has generated tens of millions in revenue. The lesson for MSPs is clear. You do not need to publish a fixed price list for everything, you need to educate. Explain what drives the investment up or down, why some providers appear cheaper, why others charge more, and what a typical client might expect over the life of the relationship. When you do this openly, you stop commoditising your services, because somebody who reads that kind of content now understands value properly. Tools like pricing estimators and self-service assessments are going to become standard in the MSP space. Marcus talks about how adding a pricing estimator to a site can multiply inbound leads and why early adopters in our industry will gain a massive advantage before this becomes normal. Inside The MSP Growth Hub, we are already seeing appetite from MSP owners to build these types of tools into their marketing and sales funnels, as they realise that buyers expect to get useful answers without needing a call every time.    We also explore how AI will shape who is recommended and who gets ignored. For years the game has been about keeping Google and the human buyer happy. Now AI tools are becoming the layer that sits between the question and the supplier. If your MSP is not producing clear, honest, useful content that addresses the real questions buyers are asking, there is a risk that AI simply does not see you as the expert to recommend. Marcus shares a practical tool at aitrustsignals.com that scores how likely AI is to recommend you, and this lines up perfectly with The MSP Growth Hub philosophy that your digital presence is no longer optional. It is a core asset in your valuation and your growth plan.    For MSP owners who feel overwhelmed at the thought of producing content, Marcus strips away the complexity. He explains how his custom tools inside ChatGPT can generate powerful customer focused titles for your blogs and videos and then gives a very simple rhythm. Take one title a day, pull out your phone, open with a natural question that your client would ask, and answer it in the same way you would if you were sitting with them in a cafe. One take, no over editing, then hand it to someone who can upload and post it across your platforms. Ten minutes a day used in this way can position you as a trusted voice in your niche. At The MSP Growth Hub we are always reminding clients that they do not need television studio production to build trust. They need consistency, clarity, and a focus on the questions that actually keep their clients awake at night.     We round off the conversation by talking about team involvement and the link between content, sales, and leadership. Marcus reinforces a message that we share regularly inside The MSP Growth Hub. Everyone in the business is part of sales and marketing. Subject matter experts on the service desk, in projects, security and account management all hold knowledge that your buyers need to see and hear. A simple monthly rhythm where marketing interview these experts, record short sessions, and turn them into articles, videos, and posts can transform your authority in the market. We also touch on the health of sales cultures in MSPs and why regular sales training, strong discovery skills, and a consultative approach will always matter, even as AI and self-service tools advance.    If you want to take the ideas from this episode and apply them to your own MSP, The MSP Growth Hub has a suite of resources designed to help you build trust, educate your market and generate more of the right leads. Start by grabbing the Ultimate MSP Growth Guide which helps you decide what type of support you need and when. Then take the MSP Mastery quiz which will give you a rapid scan of your business and highlight the one or two areas that will unlock more time, more engaged people, and more high-quality opportunities. Okay, so I took last week off, as some of you may or may not know. And one of the things that I've decided, if you saw the email that goes out on Friday, is that I'm gonna start going to every other week. Now, that doesn't mean that there's not going to be a podcast or I'm not going to be still feeding you guys. What that means is in the off week, since we have 451 podcast episodes, what I'm going to start doing is serving you up like series. So let's say you're starting with employees. And I'm gonna say, "Hey, if you're starting with employees and you want to learn about employees, listen to these 3 episodes." Or "Hey, you want to learn some content marketing hacks? I have 3 episodes on it here." And so that's kind of how we're going to do this on the off weeks, and it'll also give you guys a little bit of a chance to catch up, because I know some of you are in the middle of a major... Something else I want to talk to you about before we actually get into the topic today, which is about blogging with a strategy — which I do not see a lot of people doing — I want to share with you a clip and let me set this up for you. I alluded to it on the last episode. This is a coaching session with Becky from Paws Around Motown. And she wanted to take her entire phone script, and she wanted to build it out — and build it out with like, why are we saying this? What is the impact psychologically? You know, like, all of it. So it's not just a bullet point script that her office staff follow and they don't know why. So we really went into it, and it ended up being more than 30 pages. And what I said to her was, I wonder if we can get AI to do this with us to role play? Because guys, you want to role play, or you say you're gonna practice, but do we ever really practice? No. What are we gonna do?

I've made it 1,900 episodes of The Sales Evangelist podcast. Not quite at 2,000 yet, but I'm close. But since I'm still going strong, I thought it would be a good idea to share the nine biggest sales lessons I've learned from hosting this podcast. Hopefully, one of these lessons will help you grow your sales pipeline too.1. There's No One Way of SellingEveryone is always asking me, “What's the number one method of selling?” If you want my honesty, there isn't one. From all of my interviews, I've found that it's best to focus on who you're going to sell to and how to break through the noise to grab their attention.I also recommend just testing out the different sales methods we share on this podcast. If it works for you, great; if it doesn't, then try another one.2. Always Be ProspectingI'm a firm believer that a seller should always be prospecting, even when you're closing deals. If you have options in the sales pipeline, great. But you should also always be figuring out how you can do a better job at sales prospecting to keep prospects coming to you.3. Accountability Moves Sales ForwardI've heard this over and over again from my countless conversations: sales reps need that one-on-one time so they can stay accountable.I share a story about how an old manager of mine stopped her one-on-one time with me. This caused me to slip up and make little mistakes from not receiving coaching.4. Be on LinkedInLinkedIn will always be a powerful tool in helping you find and close deals. I've found that when sellers aren't using LinkedIn correctly, they tend to struggle with prospecting.Connect, share, and engage on LinkedIn and see how your sales pipeline starts building.5. Address Objections FirstIf you don't handle the “nos” first, they'll be an issue later. Going back to episode 446, Tom Gates shares how easing a customer's objection can increase your win rate.Don't be afraid to bring it up; doing so will let you circle back when the prospect is ready to close a deal or prevent having unnecessary clients in your pipeline.6. Little Things WorkBob Berg shares details on how to get endless referrals, and he does this by just going the extra mile. Make yourself memorable by simply sending handwritten notes. The little things actually do work when trying to build your network.7. Sales Is About RelationshipsThere's so much information out there, and if you're not making things personal, prospects aren't going to connect with you.Go back to episode 1898; I share how relevancy and personalization give you a higher response rate. In the world of AI, no one wants robotic messages.8. Make Buying EasyTransparency is everything in sales, and people want to know what they're getting before they buy. Marcus Sheridan shares how giving the price upfront provides a mutual action plan that helps make it easier for prospects to buy from you.9. Understand Your ICPWhen you know who you're targeting, your message becomes clearer, and you have a higher closing rate. In episode 1625, I share why adapting to your ICP is important and how it

That's cute… Marcus Sheridan, author of They Ask, You Answer, joins us for a high-energy episode, he joins host Stephanie Postles to break down why the playbook most B2B marketers are still running is dangerously outdated. They dive deep into the collapse of traditional SEO, the rise of AI-generated answers, and why brands that aren't building trust through video, transparency, and self-service tools are already falling behind. Marcus shares tactical examples from the likes of Liquid Death, Shasta Pools, and his own viral pool pricing content that generated $35M+ in sales. He also drops a bold prediction: your YouTube channel will soon matter more than your website. Whether you're a CMO tired of playing it safe or a marketer trying to sell bold ideas up the chain, this episode is your permission slip to think (and market) differently. Key Moments: 00:00: Is Google Dead?
