“If we, as a part of a community, want to move forward — this requires a large conversation.” As Sharon & Raman embark further into our sixth season, we continue exploring bringing more friends to the microphone as guest hosts. One of those partners on our shortlist has always been longtime FrieMMd of the Pod, podcaster and mindfulness advocate Steven Wakabayashi. Steven joins us for a candid conversation about doing the work - on and off the mic - and trying to stay in the moment without always commenting on the moment. In the weeks to come we'll start featuring some of Steven's conversation from his own podcast, Yellow Glitter, and from time to time Steven - among other FrieMMds - may join Sharon & Raman for conversations with many new friends. Harmonie Coleman is a Senior Community Engagement Manager at IDEO.org. In this role, she collaborates closely with design teams, partners, and local community members to advance equitable practices in design research and community co-design methods across the organization. She specializes in designing transformative experiences, healing-centered facilitation, participatory design methods, and recruiting community members with lived experience. Her past experiences as a teacher and community organizer both deepen her expertise and ground her current work and interests. Harmonie has a Master of Education from Harvard University and a Bachelor in Psychology and Race and Difference Studies from Emory University. In this episode, Harmonie shared her views on community and intentional relationship building, and stressed the need to move from transactive interactions to intentional relationship. She illustrated the value of intentional relationship building by sharing two projects she worked on with families and youth who have been impacted by the child welfare system. She discussed how the distinctions between participatory design, community design and co-design were not necessarily generative. Instead, she invites us to focus on the "how" and practice, rather than the labels. Last, we discussed adrienne maree brown's work and how the notion of emergent strategy informs Harmonie's work. Co-founder and Director of Operations Chris Baily saw a need in the local Portland community for offering co-packing along with the expertise to guide food entrepreneurs through the gauntlet of successful commercialization. Coincidently our guest, Hannah Kullberg, Business Development Director, was at the SBIC seeing the same gulf between food startups and becoming successful food companies. The need was definitely there to assist these fledgling companies and help guide them over the hurdles. They met, decided on a strategy of offering entrepreneurs co-packing, the first step between the entrepreneur's kitchen and the grocery shelf, and additionally the experience of Hannah and Chris to fill the knowledge gap to success. Hannah had the background for certain. While co-founding and scaling The Better Bean Company from farmers markets to national distribution, she intimately experienced the barriers to success. Over nine years building Better Bean Company she held all roles in the business including business development, sales, marketing, HR, basic accounting and operations. While operations manager, Hannah implemented a HACCP program and supervised three-fold growth in production, adding equipment, new filling lines and hiring new team members. She took the business through Non-GMO and B-Corp certifications. As sales and marketing manager, she launched the product into several new regions growing sales and velocity. They applied for a grant from Business Oregon to launch and even talked about that on our show on Episode #29, January, 2020! And so was born Community Co-Pack, or COCO as those on the inside call it. Currently with about 10 clients, Hannah and Chris have worked out the kinks of their startup and are producing entrepreneurs. Hannah fields inquiries in a very efficient manner. Inquirers fill out a form which also links to a mutual NDA and her calendar to schedule a call. Then begins the screening process. Criteria are pretty simple, as COCO's equipment and resources don't fit everyone's needs. However, referrals are a big part of COCO's services, as they believe in helping everyone build a strong food community. COCO has a fryer for snacks, a pouch packer, a blender for beverages, can do light vegetable processing and can do fresh also. They want to offer more services, but they also stick to their knitting for the present. And they want to focus on their local community, even though they have been approached by potential clients from out of the area. Hannah stays true to her calling and her mission to collectively build an equitable, regenerative, resilient, regional food system. In this episode we explore key issues that intrigue us, with an emphasis on hearing what people think in their own words. Let's turn the microphone over to you, our listeners!    We will hear people's thoughts on such questions as: What are the things in your Orthodox community that most bother you … the “pain points”? Is there someone you go to for spiritual guidance? Who and how is this working out for you? Are you and your spouse “on the same page” religiously? Thinking broadly, do you have any questions, issues, or thoughts relating to sexual attitudes, behaviors, practices, halachot, etc. as they affect you? Are there aspects of Orthodox practice where you find yourself being more machmir/ stringent or more meikil/lenient compared to other people in your religious community, and what are they? And more. This episode is also being presented on the Franciska Podcast. Orthonomics is produced by Scott Kahn of JCH Podcast Productions (http://jchpodcasts.com). Music: “Rumble” by bensound.com

Do you ever worry that you’re ‘too quiet’ in class? Pray that a lecturer won’t pick you to answer the question in front of everyone? Die a little inside when you hear that word… “PRESENTATION”? Perhaps feel concerned about making friends? Or what your peers will think of you?It can feel hard attending college when we feel this way. Believing that we’ll never be as confident as those around us. We know. Because we experienced this too. And if you’re anything like the way myself and Hayley were, then I bet you feel like you’re alone in your struggles (we certainly did!).The truth is though, feeling panicked in social and performance situations, like those you face on a daily basis at college, is far more common than you might initially think! In fact, at least 12% of students are experiencing generalised social anxiety, and nearly 50% of students experience fear in specific performance situations, such as delivering a presentation. That’s a lot of you.So what can you do about it?In this episode, Hayley and Stacie discuss the challenges we faced whilst at college. Where to seek further support. And we share some simple steps to help you feel more calm, courageous and confident with speaking up and being yourself!ABOUT YOUR HOSTSHayley Stanton, Founding Director & Coach at Quiet ConnectionsHi, I’m Hayley. I was the red-faced one that didn’t speak. I would do anything to avoid being the centre of attention, or even talking to someone, because I believed that I was broken, not good enough & didn’t fit in. Drowning in self-hate, I was too afraid try something new or connect with someone for fear of criticism & rejection… until I learned that panic & awkwardness isn't WHO you are, it’s just HOW you have learned to be; which means that you can change. I struggled to scramble together 1 good thing to say about myself & I thought that I had nothing to offer. I now know this isn’t true. Ever wondered where the anxiety you feel in social situations came from? What we’re talking about today is often a missing puzzle piece in the journey from socially anxious to quietly confident. But it’s a key piece that you need right at the start of your journey, because it’s the foundation of the belief that you can change -that you have the ability to create change for yourself. This is important because the majority of us can’t pinpoint an event that first triggered those feelings of social anxiety and avoidance within us, and this can lead us to believing that it’s just who we are. We can end up feeling like we’re broken; thinking we’re the only one struggling with this; and believing that we can't make a change. But that's not the truth. So dive right in with us to discover why ‘how you are’ is not actually ‘who you are’... Then the duo chat all about local food systems and the permaculture-focused approach to gardening that Rod, Caitlin and Tiffany take in the community co-operative garden in the heart of Winnipeg. They discuss the history of the community garden, the types of plants they grow, their unique approach to soil rejuvenation and even touch a little bit on hugelkulture. For the 100th episode of Community Signal, we’re talking about the show itself. How it came to be, what drives it and how we make it each week. My guest is the producer of all 100 episodes, Karn Broad. Karn is my creative partner in the show, but if he does his job well, you never think about it. This episode really gives you a sense of the rapport than Karn and I have, and how we work together every week to produce Community Signal. Plus: How Karn and I met Why I ended the first community management podcast that I hosted The process of creating the show each week Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “If you do your job really well as a sound engineer, you almost become invisible. If that’s the right way to put it. People don’t think about you if you’re getting your job right. Same in live sound engineering. You’ve connected the audience to the live music, they’re not thinking about you at all.” -@WebKarnage “I don’t think about my job as a sound engineer while I’m playing [music] much because I’ve got to focus on being a player. Otherwise, the job I’m doing isn’t going to be 100%.” -@WebKarnage “It’s still not a shock if I’ve done six or seven hours of editing work on a podcast, maybe more. That can happen some weeks. It really depends on how it all clicks. Sometimes I can pull things together really quickly. Sometimes the episodes are long and I find the editing tricky. Some people that you think are going to be awkward for me, actually prove to be quite easy. People that tend to leave pauses, you can take the pauses out; with a blink, they are gone.” -@WebKarnage “One of the things that makes me happy … is that a lot of people we have on are first-timers to a podcast. Out of 100 episodes, we’ve had 98 unique guests. I really want to do a survey but I would hazard a guess that for 30-45% of those people, [Community Signal is] the first podcast they’ve ever been a guest on. I always thought that’s pretty cool. What I’m saying is, we don’t go after influential people. I don’t go after people who have Twitter followers. I just want people who I actually want to talk to.” -@patrickokeefe About Karn Broad Amongst a large variety of work, Karn Broad has spent over 20 years in the audio world, and has been involved in web design for over 10 years, making websites for small businesses and working in software support for a web design package called RapidWeaver for Realmac Software. He spent several years as the producer of the SitePoint Podcast, which is where we met and built our working relationship. His direct experience in community is as a user of several forums and as a moderator for the RapidWeaver user forums. Currently, in addition to producing Community Signal, Karn works in education with children that have specific learning needs, plays bass (sometimes double-bass, sometimes electric bass) in three different live bands, and teaches both guitar and music production. A lot of value can be found for executives within an online community of their peers. That’s the focus of this episode with Adam Zawel, who built and managed executive-to-executive communities for more than a decade. Big Quotes “[When I started building INmobile,] I didn’t know anything about running an online community. I was pulled from Yankee Group where I was a wireless industry expert, to run this community, because I was a knowledge expert. The idea was they’ll come talk to me. They didn’t come talk to me. They came and talked to each other.” -@adamzawel “I’m always surprised when I hear of some tiny niche community – for example, for security professionals – some forum maybe on 1990s technology that they’re still using. It’s not about the technology. It’s really about the trust and proving itself over time. I think they have found their places, and it doesn’t need to be in many places. Really it just needs to be one place for each of them, maybe two if they’re in a converged space.” -@adamzawel “We had about 10 people in the community from an insurance company, and we’d see they were logging in all the time, but never posting. We finally reached out to them and found out that they had a policy at their company; they can’t post anywhere. They were super interested community members, dying to post. What we set up was a way for them to send in anonymous posts for the community. They got a lot of value of it and, of course, we did as well.” -@adamzawel About Adam Zawel Adam Zawel is a successful business community manager and an expert at member engagement and social business processes. Most of the members of the Alzheimer’s Society’s Talking Point community don’t have dementia. But 4% do. And that creates a unique challenge when it comes to designing an online community. Features that we might take for granted, like saved drafts, take on a whole new meaning when you are experiencing short term memory loss. Community manager Serena Snoad joins the show to talk about building a welcoming community for people with dementia, plus: How memory loss impacts how they moderate Debriefing sessions that Serena offers to staff members who have handled a stressful issue Why XenForo was the right software choice for them, in their recent relaunch Disclosure: Serena has kindly supported our show’s Patreon campaign. I’ve known her for years, and it has nothing to do with her being a guest on the show, but I felt it was worth mentioning. Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “If somebody says they have dementia, or if they’re a carer, we would then, as a team, be looking at the posts and the activity of members, particularly newer members, to see if they need any additional support. For somebody with dementia, if we feel that they’re using the community in a way that may not be very helpful, we’re not sure whether or not they’re understanding the terms and conditions or their behavior. We will take a much gentler approach with moderation. Generally, we’ll do that also for people who are undergoing quite a lot of emotional distress. We would also moderate in a slightly different way, in a way that’s designed to encourage them to post in a different way. So yes, it’s quite a delicate balance, and that’s one of the reasons why my staff and volunteers have training in emotional support as well as training in technical support. That’s been important for us.” -@serenastweeting “If you Google a health condition, it’s a horrible mess out there. To be able to get trusted information about what you need, and to be able to find people who know what they’re talking about, I think it’s really important to be in those [digital] spaces.” -@serenastweeting About Serena Snoad Serena Snoad is an online community manager, running the digital service at the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity in the UK. She lives and works in London and manages Talking Point, the Alzheimer’s Society’s 14 year old online community. Bob first became a volunteer at VAIN, then he was asked to be a board member.  He has since been the President/CEO now for the last 10 years. Bob was also the Community Co-chair for the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) HIV/AIDS Statewide Planning Group for over 3 years. He is also an avid national HIV/AIDS Educational Speaker, last year alone Bob reached over 2,700+ students of all ages in local schools and universities. He is also the On-Site Dean for Strength for the Journey which is an HIV/AIDS Retreat for up to 80 HIV Positive attendees, that is held every year in the beautiful mountains of Oregon. Anytime Bob has the opportunity he is educating the community and putting a face to this disease. Bob always thanks whatever group or individual he is talking to and tells them that since they have taken the time to listen to him and ask questions, they have just become advocates and that he hopes that all will share this information they have just received, to their peers, family and friends. He always asks them to please tell people that HIV/AIDS is not over yet and to know their status.  Yes, we have made some incredible steps in seeing the end of this disease, but we still have a long way to go. Bob witnessed the beginning of this disease, and his dream is to see the end of HIV and AIDS.
