Riding Shotgun With Charlie #138 John Crump Black Swan Media    John Crump is one of those content creators that is just about everywhere. Our paths must have crossed somewhere. Regardless, John was up for being on the show when I made a trip to Virginia. He says he does his shows from his mother's basement. She was nice enough to offer me some cookies and milk.    John, often known as Crump, or even Crumpy, has lots of things going on. He tells us that he grew up in a house full of Democrats and he was the only Constitutionalist in the family. So he's been consistent throughout. Once he gets into something, he's ALL in.  When he got into firearms, he ended up starting one gun store and buying another just to have the inventory. He submitted something to Ammoland and it was published.  The next week, he sent another article to them and that was published.  Then a third the next week. Eventually, Ammoland just said John should write for them.    He's got his hand in some other content, too.  He's got a daily YouTube channel, John Crump Live.  There's a variety of guests and topics, covering just about anything that is firearm or freedom related. Then there's John Crump News. Like the title says, it's where he puts out news of what's going on. He's also helping other content creators, too.  Folks like DLD After Dark, Flying Rich, Trench Work Chronicles, Shooting Gallery New England (RSWC #106), and 2A EDU.  Plus he creates t-shirts and patches.  All of this is under the Black Swan Media brand.  There's a story behind Black Swan Media that he shares with us.  One of the things that keeps John going is being an insomniac and not sleeping much.    John also tells us a bit about buying firearms in Virginia.  He also talks about his connection to Gun Owners of America (GOA) and their involvement with Virginia Citizens Defense League. I was a little surprised that an 18 year old can buy a handgun and carry it openly. Much of northern Virginia is ‘occupied territory' and the rest of Virginia is ‘free America' as I often call regions like these.    With all of the interviews he's done, he did a compilation of sorts.  He took some transcripts of the best interviews and turned it into a book called Speaking With Giants. Some of the interviewees are RSWC passengers! Riding Shotgun With Charlie   #080  Aaargo Jay & Rhonda Ezell   (Adult Language Warning: There are a couple offensive words used in this episode. The words were used as a quote from someone who isn’t on the show.  The words used are offensive to the speaker and the host, but they were used to make a point). This is also an extra long episode, so you need to dedicate time to watch it.    In Chicago September 2018, Aaargo Jay and I met at the Gun Rights Policy Conference. He told me that his son is a big fan of my GunGram videos!  We saw each other again at the GPRC in Phoenix in 2019 and Aaargo Jay asked if I would come to Milwaukee to film a show during the DNC in July 2020.  How could I say no?  But the DNC was cancelled due to the virus that shall not be named. I had some personal business to tend to in Illinois, so I set up a date with Aaargo then contacted Rhonda Ezell to see if she wanted to join us.  So I picked up Rhonda and headed to Wisconsin.    We spent about an hour and a half shooting. Aaargo brought 2 of his signature Bravo Oscar Rifles made my American Defense Manufacturing, which were really fun to shoot. (I love the 45 degree safety selector).  He had a 60 round drum magazine and a suppressor/silencer. Then we headed out to film the show.    Aaargo plays down that he’s an instructor.  He’s more known for making AR 15s. As a kid, he found his grandma’s .25 handgun and took it apart.  It took 2 days to get it back together.  That’s when he fell in love with building firearms.  He also used to go shooting squirrels with his grandpa.   From there, his plans were to become an air marshall, but for various reasons that didn’t happen. It's ok because his life would have been very different if he had taken that path. He’s spent time working at a gun store where he was able to teach beginners and build AR 15s.    Our conversation gets deep into racial issues about firearms and society.  The way the world is now, how some folks in the gun community treat minorities.  We also talk about the impact of rioting in black and minority communities, while we drive through an area of Milwaukee that was destroyed by riots a few years ago.  Some of it has been repaired or replaced.  Some of it is still boarded up.   Aaargo takes us through the area that was destroyed by the riots, but then we also drive through some diverse neighborhoods that are just blocks from where the riots happened. Nice homes, nice cars, trees in the yards.) Milwaukee is a little/big city. There’s a lot going on there in development but it has a smaller, old city feeling to it, too.    After we were done filming, we headed out to eat in the Historic Third Ward District of the city. We had a great conversation while we ate and enjoyed the city. What I really like about Aaargo, isn’t just that he’s a great man who is fun and knowledgeable.  But he really loves Milwaukee.  He was always looking at things he wanted us to see.  He’s very proud of his roots and where he makes his home.    After we dropped Aaargo at Brew City Shooting Supplies, Rhonda and I headed back to Chicago, where she was able to speak up about the goings on in her city.  Thank goodness we had the time! Riding Shotgun With Charlie #071 Daniel Easterday Sued Deerfield, IL with IRSA & SAF   I was headed to Chicago for some family events. I had one morning to squeeze in a possible RSWC interview.  I messaged Rhonda Ezell and asked if she knew anyone who would be around that morning. She set me up with Daniel Easterday. When he was older, he started to get into training. He learned that people aren’t as good they think they are with a firearm and he wanted to learn more.    After the Supreme Court decided that since Illinois was the last and only state to NOT allow it’s law abiding, background check passing citizens to be able to carry a concealed firearm outside their homes, they needed to change that. However, the anti-gun crowd gave towns time to make their own laws before the state laws took over.    Daniel and his family were living in Highland Park, which also did an ‘assault weapon ban’. He owned items that the town ‘didn’t like’ and had a friend store them so he complied with the laws, so he moved to Deerfield. Highland Park and Deerfield took their ordinance similar to the Cook County assault weapon ban. But Deerfield called it ‘safe storage’, but the state doesn’t have storage laws.    After Deerfield decided to change the laws and legal opinions, they amended the ordinance, it was the same as it was before. They used many of the same old cliches always used about weapons of war on our streets. With the help of the Illinois State Rifle Association and the Second Amendment Foundation, they were able to hold off the so-called-assault-weapon-ban in Deerfield.    We talk about some of the ridiculous laws and things that have to be done in the state of Illinois to get a firearm concealed carry permit. One is where the police can see who is applying for a permit, and can deny anyone the license. After 14 months of delays and the police chief of Highland Park abusing his power, Daneil finally got his carry permit.    Daniel shares that with Clarion Concepts, he is starting a “So You Think You Can Carry” course!  They emphasize that just because you have a gun, doesn’t mean it’s always the best tool. It sounds like a great course that pushes the limits of the comfort zone of the course attendees. Riding Shotgun With Charlie RSWC #037   Rhonda Ezell Chicago Guns Matter DC Project   Chicago Guns Matter, Distinguished Service, & Boom   All the planets lined up in Chicago!  I spoke at the Gun Rights Policy Conference, made many new friends and passengers, and got to interview Rhonda Ezell in her hometown!   She made the news suing the city of Chicago after the MacDonald SCOTUS ruling. She wanted to be the first one to get a concealed carry permit in Illinois! But the state had other plans in the works.  They made it difficult for Rhonda and other Chicago residents to be able to comply with the new laws by not allowing a shooting range within city limits.   She and her team of lawyers from the Second Amendment Foundation were victorious in defeating Chicago and their unclear, anti-gun laws. So, they’re currently pursuing it again!   In the process, Chicago Guns Matter was also born.
