This episode could be called "The Wisdom of Rob Crow," Mr. Crow has a lot of wise and insightful observations to share. Regardless, Rob Crow joins Dwyer to talk about fatherhood, how not everything needs to be a reaction to horribleness, sobriety, how at the age of fourteen he already had a proclivity for original music and if someone is promoting art it's probably garbage. PLosives will be playing at Alex's in Long Beach November 5th and QUartyard in San Diego November 6th. Toward the middle of the 1990s, the shift away from loud grunge, post-hardcore, and punk resulted in a wide variety of more introspective sounds. Some bands were tagged with emo, some with slowcore, others with simply indie rock. From Death Cab for Cutie and John Vanderslice to Elliott Smith and Iron & Wine, the late 90s and early aughts were full bands turning down both the volume and tempo. San Diego's Pinback, comprised of veteran scene musicians Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV, utilize a wide variety of instruments and approaches on their self-titled debut from 1999. A simple drum preset can carry an entire song, mixing a variety of analog keyboard and guitar sounds, while occasionally introducing samples, guitar-mimicking vinyl scratching, or vocal loops. It's a melancholy but charming debut that presents many interesting ideas that sometimes lack a second or third gear to make them truly inspired. Songs in this Episode: Intro - Hurley 17:34 - Tripoli 20:20 - Rousseau 25:33 - Crutch Outro - Lyon Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. This episode contains discussions of addiction and suicide. Episode #115: The stereotype of “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n' roll” is pervasive in music. The music business often fosters an environment where addiction is the norm, but many artists and industry professionals who are in recovery have successfully stayed in the industry. Today, we talk to a few of those people about their experiences, advice for those who are struggling, and resources like MusiCares. We hear from Gene Bowen, founder of Road Recovery, Slim Moon, founder of Kill Rock Stars, and Rob Crow of Pinback. In Episode 54 of the “High Regard Show,” “Everything's OK," we talk to Ace Salisbury, whose "post-apocalyptic cardboard punk" web series of the same name premiered at this year's Cannes. The show follows Artemis, who searches for her long-lost father (with the help of the revived head of Orson Welles) in New York 10 years after fracking brought upon the apocalypse — and all the water's dried up. Ace tells us how he got Rob Crow of Pinback involved to do the incredibly fitting soundtrack and what he'd need to survive such a disaster. In the new "Roly Poly Roarty," Tom gives us an update on how he's feeling and his thoughts going into last week's bariatric surgery (or at least what he can remember from all the dope he was on). Ace Salisbury interview: 09:47:30 "Roly Poly Roarty" segment: 47:05:09 Episode 4 of "Everything's OK" premieres Wednesday, Oct. 12. When you write an open letter on your Facebook page about quitting the music business forever, it’s bound to be the opening line of every review of your next record. It’s just the way of of the world. Rob Crow looks great, for what it’s worth. He quit drinking and started running (losing a considerable amount of weight as a result) — as we make our way to the Knitting Factory green room, he asks somewhat distractedly how long the whole thing will take, as he has to fit some exercise in ahead of the evening’s show. But the prolific Pinback/Heavy Vegetable/Goblin Cock frontman hasn’t necessarily quit quitting music. The prospect looms large over his latest, Rob Crow’s Gloomy Place, along with practically every word he utters about the tour, a sometimes indecipherable mix of dry humor and melancholy, not so subtly hinting that he just can’t keep doing this forever. It’s a good talk, and tough one at times. It’s a reminder of the difficult touring life of an indie musician casual listeners so often takes for granted. As we finish and I begin winding up my cables, Crow strips off his clothes, throws on some neon exercise gear and takes off for a run down the Brooklyn streets.
