After World War II, Germany was destroyed…the country was divided…the east was under the control of the USSR…the west was in democratic Europe…and then there was berlin, sitting in the east but cut into different zones dominated by the Russians, the Americans, the British, and the French. Most history books look at the political and military side of things…what we don't hear about nearly as much as how Germany society was rebuilt…imagine being a young person who is too young to have been in the military…what prospects did you have growing up in a divided country ruined by war. This is where art comes in…art is always downstream from whatever is happening in society…and in the case of West Germany, many artists wanted things to be different. Young German musicians had some very serious ideas of what needed to be done…many were into rock…but they were determined to create rock that was different from what was being made in the UK and America. And they certainly didn't want anything resembling traditional German music…it had been tainted by the nazi legacy…it was time for something new, different, and away from the status quo. There were experiments in the 50s that were pretty radical and, frankly, all over the place…but the results of these experiments began to coalesce into something by the end of the 60s. Within a few years, something distinctly German had emerged…it rocked (in its own way)…it had elements of psychedelic music…things could either be extremely structured or open to wild improvisation…it certainly wasn't from any blues tradition or normal rock conventions upon which British or American rock was built. The structures of some compositions weren't exactly what you could call normal—at least not in the context of rock…and occasionally, things got political, but not necessarily in a protest sense. By the middle 70s, we had a new distinctly German sound…the scene was very diverse in terms of sonics, but there was a Teutonic purpose underlying everything. The Germans just called it “German rock”…the British, however, gave it another name…it was supposed to be a joke, but the name stuck…and looking back, this sound, approach, aesthetic, and name can be found throughout many different corners of the rock. This is an explanation of thing that has become known as a “Krautrock”…and believe me, you've heard it more than you realize. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This podcast may give you an existential crisis when we Marching Dice a John Philip Sousa song on your face and become the best podcast about Kraftwerk and 238th greatest album of all time, Trans-Europe Express. Before we get to the music, we let our haters become our motivators for some discussion of dominatrix dreams, one-arm pushups, and concert posters. We also celebrate a mental health day with another pack of Boston Baked Beans. Good luck trying to do a carpool karaoke version of this part of the pod with Chicken James Cordon Bleu. Then, at (1:13:00), these four showroom dummies cover the 1977 electronic album, Trans-Europe Express. We discuss Krautrock music, sequencers, and Kraftwerk's influence on Dr. Dre. Next week's episode will feature a dope beat as we become the best Boogie Down Production podcast and cover the 1987 hip-hop album, Criminal Minded.
SEQUENCES No270 A brief update on the latest new names for this month's first edition. On the modular front, Anders Jakobsen aims to create a balance between noisy and harmonious sounds. We are in a live session with Danielle Nia. Thierry Holwerk is using a Serge Modular Synth, paired with field samples recorded from his source of inspiration. Mansur's sound journey navigates the realms of musical fantasy and reality, merging traditional instrumentation with contemporary electronica. Nettaiya is a groundbreaking New Age music project that fuses Eastern and Western influences into an ethereal sonic experience. Influences from Kraut Rock emerge on the track ‘Trippin With The Birds', with Stereo Lab and Nurse With Wound contributing to this fusion. After switching labels to Groove, Otarion's latest album release is undoubtedly his best yet, kicking off our session. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Secretary of Health and Human Services, has been undermining public trust in vaccines and overseeing crippling cuts to research across American science. And yet his “make America healthy again” highlights themes more familiar in liberal circles: toxins in the environment, biodiversity, healthy eating. Kennedy has put junk food at the center of the political conversation, speaking about ultra-processed foods and their established links to chronic disease—despite President Donald Trump's well-known reverence for fast food of all kinds. Marion Nestle, a leading nutrition researcher and the author of “Food Politics,” has written in depth on how money and politics affect our diet and our health, and about the ways that American science research has been hampered by limited funding. She tells the physician and contributing writer Dhruv Khullar, who's been reporting on the American diet, that “it would be wonderful if R.F.K., Jr., could make the food supply healthier. I just think that in order to do that, he's going to have to take on the food industry, and I don't think Trump has a history of taking on corporations of any kind. . . . I'll believe it when I see it.” Kraftwerk—the pioneering electronic music group that débuted more than half a century ago —has been touring the U.S., with stops planned in Europe this year. The staff writer Kelefa Sanneh calls them one of the most influential bands of all time, playing a formative role in hip-hop, techno, EDM, and much of popular music as we know it. Sanneh picks tracks from Kraftswerk's repertoire and demonstrates how those sounds trickle out through music history, from Afrika Bambaataa to Coldplay.
Today: In 1979, Nurse With Wound entered a UK recording studio with no musical training whatsoever and created an album called Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella, which promptly was awarded a rating of five question marks from Sounds Magazine. Since then, NWW has confounded critics and listeners alike, both pioneering and mining the areas of improvisation, Krautrock-influence, electroacoustic experiments and more, with unparalleled sense of invention and quite often humor. Today, Brian Turner reflects back on the massive body of work by this shifting ensemble, digging out a rare interview he did with its central figure, Steven Stapleton, from his Irish goat farm.NURSE WITH WOUND - Rock N' Roll Station - Rock N' Roll Station (United Dairies, 1994)NURSE WITH WOUND - Fragments I - Who Can I Turn To Stereo Etc.
Today on Line Noise, something of a Krautrock special as we speak to Wolfgang Seidel, the former drummer in Eruption, a group founded by (former Tangerine Dream and Kluster member) Conrad Schnitzler, that was once described as “a thinktank for the then explosive Krautrock scene”. Seidel is also the author of a new book: Krautrock Eruption – An Introduction To German Electronic Music 1970-1980, which I thoroughly recommend. Obviously, we spoke about Krautrock, its influences today, about alternative histories, Kraftwerk, capitalism and more. Enjoy it and just remember - Line Noise comes to you with the support of Cupra.

Welcome to Line Noise. Today our guest - on what is the 200th episode of Line Noise (kind of) - is Mr. Wolfgang Voigt one of the most important producers in the history of German electronic music and the cofounder of Kompakt Records. On this episode, though, we are largely taking about GAS, his sublime ambient / psychedelic techno project, under which name Voigt had come to Barcelona to play a live gig. We talked about dub, forests, LSD, Krautrock, gabber hits and so much more. I hope you enjoy it. Line Noise is supported by Cupra.

Smooth...chilled...and mysterious: the electronic orchestrations of the late German electronic music pioneer KLAUS SCHULZE — just one of the new styles to emerge from the hyper-creative incubator that was Berlin in the 1960s and 70s. Electronic synthesizers ultimately fueled dozens of new genres, the most famous being “Kraut Rock.” But the confluence of cosmic electronic soundscapes and the classical music of Europe led to a widely popular genre that came to be known as “spacemusic.” It was well-suited to the winter months, when listeners could easily make the perceptual leap from the new sound to the frigid vacuum of interstellar space—a natural conjunction that was recognized by the first generation of academic electronic musicians, like German composer KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another interstellar flight on electronic wings, on a program called WINTERTRONIC 4. Music is by KLAUS SCHULZE, MARK DWANE, ANDREW LAHIFF, DREAMSTATE LOGIC, ISOSTATIC, OXIA PALACE, and HOLLAN HOLMES. [ view playlist ] [ view Flickr image gallery ] [ play 30 second MP3 promo ]

Today, the Spotlight shines On author Christoph Dallach, who joins me to discuss his book Neu Klang: The Definitive History of Krautrock.Christoph has spent years tracking down the pioneers who spent the late 1960s in West Germany's basements and practice rooms, creating sounds unlike anything else in rock and roll.Through conversations with members of bands like Can, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream, Christoph uncovers how these artists shaped a distinctly German sound in the shadow of World War II. Welcome to Mona Lisa Overpod, the show that asks the question "What is cyberpunk?" On each episode, hosts Ka1iban and author Lyda Morehouse dive into the genre that helped define sci-fi fiction in '80s and they break down its themes which remain relevant to our lives in the 21st century. Pull on your mirrorshades, jack into the matrix, and start your run with us today!Cyberpunk, culturally, is as much about style as it is about theme, and every good scene needs a soundtrack. But what exactly constitutes cyberpunk music? What BPM correctly communicates "down with the corpos"? Can you make cyberpunk music with analog instruments? And how does Michael Sembello fit into all of this? In this episode, we discuss the evolution of electronic music and the "cyberpunk sound", its roots in the punk movement and early electronica, the balance between composition and theme, the importance of "feel", defining an art form through constraints, and we ask whether or not "cyberpunk music" is a living genre. We also talk about dead Aibos, Dexy's = not cyberpunk, tapepunk, the trans history of synthesized music, Krautrock, how Blade Runner DIDN'T influence cyberpunk music, cyber-meetings with Timothy Leary, the Suck Fairy, synthwave and the Desert of the Real, the non-cyberpunk Matrik soundtrack, and how cyberpunk music looks back to look forward."If you have exceptions, you do have a rule." - Lyda MorehouseThe new edition of Lyda's book, Ressurection Code, is out now!https://wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/books-by-lyda-morehouse/resurrection-code/Join Kaliban on Twitch weekdays at 12pm for the Cyber Lunch Hour!http://twitch.tv/justenoughtropePut Just Enough Trope merch on your body!http://justenoughtrope.threadless.comMLOP is a part of the Just Enough Trope podcast network. We had to take a few weeks off, but we are back with an episode that is almost as good as the music featured in it - AND THE MUSIC IS VERY GOOD!The idea was to pitch songs that should be used in a sample. Such a fun thought experiment that we thought we should focus on a specific instrument so we could make this a series. So today we present the drums edition of this playlist-based concept.First we'll get into Danny's playlist, featuring 8 songs made up of 2-song pairings that exist in similar spaces. We'll cover country, gritty rock, swampy soulful country funk, and then a random pairing of songs that happen to work fantastic together. Then we'll get into Julius's playlist which covers grunge, Krautrock, and soul - a mix of songs that will have you dancing along while craving buttery chicken. With the last minute addition of a Bjork song it rounds out to 8 classic songs, old and new, that you can jam out to in any setting.Songs featured in this episode:Gettin' HappyHang You From the HeavensTulsa Turnaround (Tyler Childers Live at Farm-Aid)Melt Not My Igloo (Common Remix)Vitamin CTerrapin (Conductor Williams Remix)Links to our Playlists:Danny: Spotify - Apple Music - YoutubeJulius: Spotify - Apple Music - YoutubeCheck our Season 2 preview episode description to see what music we'll be discussing next!Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you! Rockshow episode 205 Can and FaustCan and Faust are two pioneering bands from the Krautrock movement, a genre that emerged in West Germany in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Krautrock is known for blending rock, electronic music, and avant-garde experimentation, influencing many subsequent genres, including post-punk, new wave, and electronic music. Can:• Origin: Cologne, West Germany (1968) • Members: The classic lineup consisted of Holger Czukay (bass), Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Liebezeit (drums), Michael Karoli (guitar), and Damo Suzuki (vocals from 1970 to 1973). • Style: Can's sound is a fusion of psychedelic rock, avant-garde, jazz, and funk with a strong emphasis on improvisation and minimalist rhythms. They often used repetitive grooves and layered textures, creating a hypnotic effect. Their music could range from delicate, ambient passages to wild, chaotic experimentation. • Notable Albums: • Tago Mago (1971): A landmark album known for its experimental sound, long instrumental jams, and Suzuki's unpredictable vocals. • Ege Bamyasi (1972): Featuring more concise and rhythmic songs, with hits like “Vitamin C” and “Spoon.” • Future Days (1973): A more ambient, ethereal record, often seen as a peak of the band's explorative nature. • Influence: Can was highly influential in shaping the experimental rock and electronic scenes, inspiring artists ranging from David Bowie to Radiohead.Faust: • Origin: Wümme, West Germany (1971) • Members: The core lineup included Werner “Zappi” Diermaier (drums), Jean-Hervé Péron (bass), Rudolf Sosna (guitar, keyboards), Arnulf Meifert (drums), and Hans Joachim Irmler (keyboards). • Style: Faust's music is more avant-garde and noise-oriented than Can's. They mixed rock with musique concrète, tape experiments, electronic soundscapes, and dissonant, atonal elements. Their sound often had an anarchic, confrontational edge, pushing the boundaries of what rock music could be. • Notable Albums: • Faust (1971): Their debut, an experimental and highly eclectic album, blending found sounds, noise, and fragmented song structures. • Faust IV (1973): A more accessible but still experimental album, with a mix of rock, ambient soundscapes, and odd time signatures. • The Faust Tapes (1973): Originally sold for a low price, this album was a collage of improvisations, studio experiments, and sound cut-ups. • Influence: Faust is seen as one of the most avant-garde bands of the Krautrock scene, influencing later experimental and industrial music, as well as bands in the post-punk and art-rock genres. Both bands were central to Krautrock's ethos of breaking free from traditional rock structures, emphasizing improvisation, and pushing boundaries with studio technology. While Can leaned more into groove-oriented, hypnotic rhythms, Faust embraced a more radical approach to sound experimentation. For Can:#CanBand #Krautrock #ExperimentalRock #TagoMago #EgeBamyasi #DamoSuzuki #HolgerCzukay #IrminSchmidt #JakiLiebezeit #MichaelKaroli #PsychedelicRock #AvantGarde #MinimalistRock #PostPunkInfluence #FutureDays #GermanRockFor Faust:#FaustBand #Krautrock #AvantGardeRock #ExperimentalMusic #FaustIV #TheFaustTapes #ZappiDiermaier #JeanHervePeron #HansJoachimIrmler #MusiqueConcrete #NoiseRock #GermanUnderground #ArtRock #IndustrialMusicInfluence #FaustExperimentation
Welcome to your next dose of Awareness with Amandolin on this episode I spoke with Frankie Sunswept + Kimberly Haven about "Nostalgia" their upcoming record you can preorder a c copy of now! The record is exactly the kinda thing that keeps me fiery for the music scene. It combines the band's love of Ethio-jazz, Krautrock, 60s psychedelia, garage rock, African rock, South American folk music, prog, and even proto-metal into a distinctive time capsule dealing with themes of collective memory, climate change, mythology, science fiction, and loving kindness. Each song flows seamlessly into the next creating an infinite loop that echoes the album's theme of the circular nature of time.Watch the triple music video!Feels like a record made for me and likely you too listeners! THE ARRIVAL OF PRACTICAL ELECTRONIC SYNTHESIZERS in the late 1960s and early 1970s caused a sensation around the world, but nowhere more than Germany. Postwar German artists were restless, intent on leaving behind all forms of traditional German music, as well as the Rhythm & Blues roots and song structure of popular Anglo-American rock. An innocent feature of early modular synthesizers called a “step sequencer” provided a tool that led to the development of an original style called “Kosmische Musik” or "Cosmic Music" in Germany, and—more playfully—“KrautRock.” The step sequencer made it easy to create hypnotic rhythm loops with up to 32 notes or steps, set a tempo, and mix them over flowing electronic drones. The effect was to “float” the listener through endless terrestrial or cosmic space: it was addictive. Seminal groups and individuals like CAN, KLAUS SCHULZE, TANGERINE DREAM, KRAFTWERK, CLUSTER, ASH RA TEMPEL, HARMONIA and others, created an enduring style that has influenced genres from Minimalism, Ambient and Electronic Dance Music, to New Age and Techno. Today we call it the "Berlin School." On this transmission of Hearts of Space, another timeless flight on electronic rhythms, on a program called SEQUENCER AIRLINES. Music is by ALPHA WAVE MOVEMENT, STATE AZURE, STEVE HAUSCHILDT, STARTERRA, MARTIN STURTZER, SYNTH REPLICANTS, STRAY THEORIES, NILS FRAHM, and EDGAR FROESE. Google has spent the past year lustily rolling out AI features across its platforms. But with each launch, it is becoming more clear that some of these so-called enhancements should have simmered a little longer. The latest update to stoke equal parts excitement and ridicule is AI Overviews, the new auto-generated summary boxes that appear at the top of some Google search results. In theory, AI Overviews are meant to answer questions and neatly summarize key information about people's search queries, offering links to the sources the summaries were pulled from and making search more immediately useful. In reality, these AI Overviews have been kinda messy. The information the summary confidently displays can be simply, and sometimes comically, wrong. Even when the AI Overview is correct, it typically only offers a slim account of the topic without the added context—or attribution—contained in the web pages it's pulling from. The resulting criticisms have forced Google to reportedly dial back the number of search queries that trigger AI Overviews, and they are now being seen less frequently than they were at launch. This week, we talk with WIRED writers Kate Knibbs and Reece Rogers about the rollout, how Google has been managing it, and what it's like to watch our journalism get gobbled up by these hungry, hungry infobots.Show Notes:Read Kate's story about Google trimming the frequency of its AI Overviews. Read Reece's story about how Google's AI Overviews copied his original work. "What is it about my music that's touching other people?" One of the forefathers of techno reflects on his legacy, the state of techno music and the city of Detroit live from IMS. Most people in nightlife are familiar with the name Juan Atkins. One of the originators of techno, he grew up in Belleville, a middle-class suburb of Detroit, and would become one of the Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson. This first wave of Detroit techno artists was inspired by the late night emissions of radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo—a late-night presenter who famously mixed different synth music, like Krautrock and the German outfit Kraftwerk—and the writing of futurists like Alvin Toffler, who imagined a different, utopic vision of urban life and technology. In this keynote interview recorded live at International Music Summit in Ibiza, Atkins reflects on his roots and the musical movement that's grown from his first experiments with techno in the '80s. Returning to his adolescence, he unpacks the origins of his electro collaboration Cybotron, his solo project Model 500 (coming to Houghton this year) and his label, Metroplex, which became a blueprint for a hoard of techno imprints that would emerge in its wake. Now 61, Atkins also reflects on the broader impact music has had on his life—he has given lectures on the intersection of physics, music and spirituality—as well as the remaining stones left unturned as he enters the (very much still active) sunset in his career. Listen to the episode in full.
