Antoine Arvizu is the studio owner and manager, recording and producing most of the artists that come to us for that “Compound Sound”. Some artists and producers of note include:  Chicano Batman, Ryan Bingham (Grammy and Oscar winner for Crazy Heart), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes, Ben Harper, Booker T. Jones), Ikey Owens (Free Moral Agents, Jack White, The Mars Volta), Jay Buchanan (Rival Sons)… Arvizu began his music career as a drummer in the late 70s/early 80s as punk rock morphed into an alternative art rock. A founding member of Dr. Dream Records recording artists National Peoples Gang, he toured internationally before disbanding in the mid-90s; sharing the stage with such iconic bands as The Flaming Lips, Nirvana, Soundgarden, fIREHOSE and many more during those early days of "indie rock". A recording career began in 1991 at the now defunct The Toledo studio in Long Beach engineering for Sublime, Rocket From The Crypt, Big Drill Car and many more. Later in the nineties he was a founding member of the Delta Blues group Bourbon Jones, earning the moniker Two Drum Tony, famous for simply playing the 26″ Radio King bass drum and cowhide snare, digging deep into the second line style of New Orleans blues and swing. It was in 1998 that Antoine had the opportunity to engineer at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. The list of fine artists that come through those studios is staggering, to name a few: Paul McCartney, The JB's, Richard Carpenter, Elliot Smith, Faith Hill… and the list of world class engineers and producers is outrageous; education through osmosis. In 2003, happy to finally have a studio to truly call home, Antoine joined The Compound Studio to help create “An Organic Recording Experience". as you might've read over the last few days, nearly 10,000 people have agreed to legally change their name to “Subway” in exchange for a lifetime of Subway's yoga-mats-for-bread sandwiches.  Putting aside for a moment no one has learned anything from the Rocket From The Crypt tattoo deal a few years ago,  Subway's scheme is as unoriginal as it is nefarious  — I should know because I was paid a generous fee after advising Pennsylvania / WV chain Eat'n Park to introduce a similar offer several years ago.  Though only a handful of hungry persons took them up on the offer, we are now faced with the possibility of someone named Eat'n Park Subway essentially eating for free 24/7, 365 (until the yoga-mat bread takes it's inevitable toll, anyway).

This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This band is a true treasure from the Great White North that plays mean power chords and punch-you-in-the-mouth rock n' roll! The lead singer and guitarist is a swaggering rock n' roll force to be reckoned with… Twenty-Seven years into their career at this point, but most Americans don't know him or his amazing band. That is a travesty. Guess who's back??? Say his name and say it loud like it's a hit song… DANKO JONES!!!This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. We are starting with Part 2 of a 2-part episode because Kevin just wanted to do so… It's his show and he's an idiot, so let him have it. Hopefully, we can turn you on to this “other” amazing Canadian power trio. What is it with Canada and power trios anyway? Have a listen and find out for yourself! Vi snackar om Oasis eventuella återförening, Tina Turners bortgång, den generella Way Out West-publiken, en nostalgisk Hultsfred-dokumentär, Festival of the midnight sun och ägnar en lång stund åt avsnittets huvudämne, bra låtar med artister som vi aldrig har fattat grejen med. Dessutom har Ricky Holmquist nostalgilyssnat på Llojd, Fink och Breaking Benjamin medan  Mikael Mjörnberg lyssnat in nytt från Terra och drömt om gammalt liverus med Rocket From The Crypt. I segmentet "listan" lyfter Mikael Mjörnberg fram tre smala akter som måste ses på Sweden Rock. Toronto and Montreal based trio, American Lips, have just announced the release of their latest 3-song maxi-single Waste of Crime on Ancient Fashion Records. American Lips features Death From Above 1979 drummer Sebastien Grainger and prolific producer Adrian Popovich, also known for his time in legendary Canadian rock act Tricky Woo. In explaining their newest offering the bands' latest one-sheet asks you to ponder, “Ever wondered what it would sound like if The Art Of Noise produced a Plastic Bertrand record?” To clear up that question Popovich explains, “I spent a good chunk of 1988 listening to the Colors OST and the“Kiss”cassingle by The Art Of Noise and Tom Jones. This older kid Rob on my street who was into punk rock said “the Colors soundtrack is pretty cool but that Art Of Noise song is garbage!” As a nine-year-old, I'd yet to be called out on my questionable musical tastes. Rob made me a mixtape with songs by The Ramones, Misfits, Motorhead, The Buzzcocks and a bunch of other essentials. I'd never heard any punk music before and the impact it had on me was huge. Ffwd to 2022, when Sebastien unilaterally decided to add Fairlight sample horn arrangements to two new American Lips songs, the simultaneous feelings of glorious discovery and deep shame I felt in 1988 came flooding back”. Inspired by Wax Trax! Records, Shep Pettibone, Art Of Noise, and a hot cut from The Ghostbusters OST, American Lips shed the punky garage-wave of their 2017 debut LP “KissThe Void,” and take a hard-drive dumpster-dive, emerging with a kind of “sample-bank pop” -at once danceable, but stylistically hard to pin down (don't call it dance punk!). Double A-sides “Waste Of Crime” and “Labor Of Hate” are backed by extended dub remix“Labor Of Dub.” Fans of mid-80s Cabaret Voltaire, Ghostbusters OST, Decadent Dub Team, Rocket From The Crypt and Plastic Bertrand will rejoice in the exquisite peppering of influences in these new compositions.  WebSite: https://ancientfashionrecords.com/ D I S C O V E R Twitter: https://twitter.com/american_lips Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/americanlipsss Bandcamp: https://americanlips.bandcamp.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/americanlipsband Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5srNG8oK8FdG7qe9jiH7p7?si=mkAMZTuzQnO2CWxt4nrmpQ Brought to you by AIXdspShop now and get up to 50% off on all plugins.Website: HEREPledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca

One of these things is not like the other ... Author,
Band Manager, Photographer,
Record Label Employe…… Insurance Agent?? In 1980, during high school, I was swallowed up by punk rock in Southern California. That scene was a creative incubator where I developed my vision and passion. It started with photography and expanded from there. Later in the 1980's, I worked at several record labels (SST, CRUZ, Enigma, Cargo and even Capitol for 1 day). Throughout most of the Nineties I took a hiatus from photography – I moved to San Diego, had a book published (Hell On Wheels 1994) and was managing bands (Rocket From The Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Big Drill Car, Supernova), then in 2001, it was over. I moved to Long Beach, CA, and got a straight job. Bored with my straight job, (yet maintaining it) I started photographing live music again. I started contributing my photos to a few magazines, record covers, websites and music videos. And, in 2020 I started working on a revised version of my book Hell On Wheels. Working on the book during the pandemic was a great distraction and I found that many of the musicians I was trying to connect with were available since the pandemic left them unable to tour. I'm very proud of this book and can't wait for others to read it. The fan-boy in me wants to list all of the bands right here and now ...But I guess I should wait until we are closer to the release date. There are 50 new bands and 54 new stories. The book will be released by University of Hell Press in the Spring of 2023. From the list of jobs above, I still consider myself active in all of them except “Record Label Employee” but who knows what the future may bring? Drive Like Jehu was an American post-hardcore band from San Diego active from 1990 to 1995. It was formed by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rick Froberg and lead guitarist John Reis, ex-members of Pitchfork, along with bassist Mike Kennedy and drummer Mark Trombino, both from Night Soil Man, after their two bands disbanded in 1990. Drive Like Jehu's music was characterized by passionate singing, unusual song structure, indirect melodic themes, intricate guitar playing, and calculated use of tension, resulting in a distinctive sound amongst other post-hardcore acts and helped to catalyze the evolution of hardcore punk into emo. This week's guest is Atom Willard. Atom played with some of my favorite bands growing up including Rocket From the Crypt, The Offspring, Social Distortion, and Angels and Airwaves, but he is the current drummer for Against Me! and Laura Jane Grace and The Devouring Mothers. As I often do in the days leading up to these chats, I went down a rabbit hole of Atom's drumming and I was blown away by how much of my OWN playing can be attributed to Mr. Willard...like...it's actually embarrassing. This one meant a lot to me and I hope you enjoy my conversation with Atom Willard as he dissects his biggest musical influences that made him into the drummer he is today. Cheers ya'll. Jalacy J. Hawkins, better known as Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, was one of a kind. His voice? Have you ever heard a volcano sing in the middle of a tsunami, while frogs were raining down from the sky? That’s close to the strange, powerful and goddamn charming beauty of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and that magic voice of his. He’d pop out of a coffin, sing a song about not being able to poop, strutting about the stage with a skull on a stick smoking a cigarette. If you think that last sentence was strange, wait until you hear the story of how “I Put A Spell On You” was recorded! That story is included in this episode, by the way. A brief history of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins from birth to death, the stories behind a couple of his more well known songs and more! The music of the bands in this episode bring something special - a shock-rock connection via Alice Cooper covers, that’s Sloppy Seconds and BL’AST. Then we have Rocket From The Crypt, because ROCK N ROLL, that’s why. The originator of “Shock-Rock” would be proud.

"Makers of high octane, soulful garage punk... Get an early taste with smoking' stomper 'Battle Line'." -- BrooklynVegan "Their live show is a turbo-charged, bombastic display of true blue rock'n'roll chaos. It's not just a wild live show; the songs are fantastic too!" -- RazorCake (cover story) San Diego trio The Schizophonics announce their forthcoming sophomore album, People In The Sky today. BrooklynVegan premiered the first single "Battle Line" yesterday, which is available now to hear and share via BrooklyVegan, YouTube, Bandcamp and Spotify. The band takes its jaw-dropping live show on the road for headlining dates throughout North America this October. Please see current dates below. Over the last few years, The Schizophonics have built up a formidable reputation around the world as an explosive live act. Tapping into the same unstoppable combination of rock 'n' roll energy and showmanship that fueled The MC5 in the heyday of the Grande Ballroom, their wild live show is heavily influenced by artists like James Brown, Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Little Richard, and The Sonics. Singer/guitarist Pat Beers and drummer Lety Beers formed the band in San Diego in 2009 and have worked tirelessly since then, playing hundreds of shows around the globe and winning 7 (SEVEN!) San Diego music awards. In 2013 they were recruited as the backing/opening band for El Vez, which helped the band make a name for itself in Europe. Since then, they've played in fourteen countries, and supported tours by like-minded acts like Rocket From The Crypt, Little Barrie, and The Woggles and have opened for The Damned, The Hives and Cage The Elephant. Shindig magazine described their live show "Like watching some insane hybrid of Wayne Kramer, James Brown, and the Tazmanian Devil." "One of my favorite live bands ever," proclaims Tim Mays, who has run the Casbah in San Diego for 30 years and has seen literally thousands of live bands come through his doors. "The Schizophonics bring the goods every time they play," he enthuses. The band is more than just an outstanding live act, they're also committed to writing great, memorable songs. After releasing 2 singles and an EP over the last few years on Munster, Ugly Things, and Pig Baby Records, they put out their first full-length album in July 2017 titled Land Of The Living on the label Sympathy For The Record Industry with famed record man Long Gone John. In January of 2019 they started work on their second LP recruiting Da

There was a brief flicker of a moment at the end of the 90s, before the garage rock rival of The Strokes and White Stripes, before the post-post-punk of Interpol and Bloc Party, before Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional took emo to the mainstream, that the American underground punk of the New Bomb Turks and Rocket From The Crypt were going to have their moment. At the same time, across the pond in Scandinavia, it took the shape of The Hellacopters signing to Sub Pop and veterans Turbonegro refining their sound with the 1998 release Apocalypse Dudes. Maybe it was wishful thinking that those who previously embraced AC/DC, Motley Crue and Buckcherry would find common cause with the action rock crowd, one that favored Iggy and Stooges as much as Bob Seger and Lynyrd Skynyrd. While The Hellacopters and Gluecifer traffic'd in their own brand of riffage gymnastics, Turbonegro added an extra layer - social and political commentary via bombastic lyrics and outrageous stage presence. In retrospect, it may have all been too much, like the layer upon layer of guitar tracks that would make Billy Corgan crack a smile. Editors note: Make sure yer ears are nice 'n' clean before listening to this episode, cause your auditory senses are about to get filled to the brim with all kinds of jam! My good friend (and, I swear to Jah, one of the greatest stand up comedians ever) Mike Lebovitz joins me as we listen to the Silver Jews American Water LP. Mike's got great taste, so I was pleased as punch to get him on the show to BS, as we do. We stay on topic and talk 90s indie nuggets. I then proceed to play some assorted 90s hits at the end to fill things out. Last, but certainly now least, the show closes with the newest Rocket From The Crypt song, which I don't think is available on the internet at the time of the original air date. Go listen to that sucker in all it's glory cause RFTC fahking rules. Plug in, then when you're done, take the plug out. Just be safe when dealing with plugging.  Jam Sandwich can also be found at: manontop69.com || Twitter: @jamsandwichpod || Instagram: @jamsandwichpodcast

Welcome one and all to the newest podcast by the warped minds that brought you podcasts like the Dweller's Below, The LRDG and The Ghost Army Podcast. The LRDG II (or Inappropriate Interviews), Old Man Morin invites folks from near and far to discuss miniature wargaming in its many forms.   Episode one is largely about Old Man Morin's foray, as an experienced warmer, into Malifaux. In the first segment Brad chats with our old buddy on the top side of the world, CBax who is on a similar gaming path but is further along the road, experience wise. The guys talk Easter Sale, starting up Faux and discuss gaming in general.    In segment two, Patch joins in to discuss painting as he details how he painted the incredible Pertida Crew for Brad in the span of a weekend. He explains the tricks he used to get that level of detail onto the models in such a short period of time. He then hangs around for a bit and the guys briefly talk Team Yankee and wargaming in general. Look for more pictures of Patch's stuff on the LRDG Podcast's FB page.    I am joined in the final segment by, the one and only, Matt Stanley of Nova Open (in)Fame. Matt shares the highs and lows of his recent Adepticon trip, discusses gaming post apocalypse style, chats Malifaux highlights and shares new events scheduled for this year's Nova Open.    Be warned that the occasional naughty word was dropped here and there during the recording of this podcast. This is a new and slightly raw cast. If you have feedback that you would like to share and ideas that you would send our way, please contact Old Man Morin via the LRDG Podcast Facebook page.    *We would like to thank the bands Rocket From The Crypt for letting us use their fantastic tune "Pushed" as our intro music and The Red Elvises for generously letting use their tune "Love Pipe" as our outro music. We at the LRDG highly recommend that you check out the work of these extremely talented bands.
