On today's episode, I talk to musician Isabel Olive AKA Half Gringa. Originally from Carbondale, Illinois, Isabel has been playing as Half Gringa - a nod to a childhood term of endearment as “la Gringa” in her Venezuelan family and her bicultural experience growing up in the United States - since the late 20-teens. Her first album Gruñona was released in 2017 and her second Force to Reckon in 2020. Earlier this year, she released the Ancestral Home EP, and this summer she'll be on tour supporting Iron & Wine!

Rosie discusses how a seemingly simple question from one of her boys led her to think that really there was a deeper/bigger question being asked - essentially, “what do I have to do for attention, praise, or love?” In spotting that, and nipping that incorrect conclusion in the bud, it struck on an incorrect conclusion she had carried through her life from childhood, and only recently corrected herself. Listen along as Rosie talks to and comforts her younger, former self (Tiny Psycho Roise) and stays on alert with her own children to try to beat them to their own (incorrect/false) conclusions, so that they don't carry those misunderstandings or "child deduction" into their adult life. Parenting is already a tall order - raising them, teaching them, trying our best to answer their questions, but what about the questions they don't ask? The underlying questions they may not even know they're wondering, and the wrong conclusions they come to trying to put things together. Admittedly, that's a toughie, but let's try to be on the lookout for those, and try to cover things just in case. Just in case they're getting the wrong idea of what they have to do to get love, or to be loved, because what we want more than anything is for them to know that they are loved unconditionally. - Send Rosie your questions to have answered on a future podcast! - AskRosieLFP@gmail.com Brought to you by: Lullabies For Parents Vol 1 on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music Featuring guest appearances: Sufjan Stevens, The Shins, Iron & Wine, Alexi Murdoch, William Fitzsimmons, Audrey Assad, Charity from The Head & The Heart, Kanene from The Lone Bellow, Dawn Landes, Denison Witmer, and many more. Anxiety, depression, panic attacks. Generally dreadful stuff that we understandably try to avoid, do whatever we can to be free of, or just get past, but what if some anxiety was actually there to help you? Stay with me now! Why is it showing up? What if it's trying to get your attention to tell you something needs to change? What if you are coming undone because something new is emerging, because you've outgrown the old you, and the new you is trying to be re-born? What if you have to let some things go to make room for the new you? New found joys? New inspiration? What if that anxiety is actually you being transformed? It's uncomfortable and unknown, but it could be leading you to something new. A fuller you! Your true self. Let's talk about it! - Rosie touches on her own bouts with anxiety and panic attacks, and how something Richard Rohr said helped her unlock and identify some necessary changes she needed to make in her life and in her career. (the book mentioned - Falling Upward) *This episode certainly applies to parents, but is much broader and should be of interest and encouragement to anyone - parent or not* ***Of course there are many causes of, and many ways to deal with anxiety, depression, or panic attacks and this will not apply to all scenarios obviously, but an idea to consider and be curious about and investigate. Particularly entering, or in, the second half of life.** - Send Rosie your questions to have answered on a future podcast! Being a parent is really hard, and unfortunately it's really easy to get caught up comparing ourselves to other parents - Parents that seem to have it all together. Could be our friends, our own parents, parents we see on social media, even strangers at the store, at school, on a playground, wherever... But beware, it's a trap! Don't fall into that trap! Don't compare! Be yourself! Rosie walks you through how to do that by first identifying who you really are, and always have been. We need to lean into our strengths, and be our true selves, and by extension teach our kids to be their true selves too - wonderfully confident and self assured. Give your kids the unique adventure that only YOU can give them by being you, and let other people have their own by being them. Today's episode is a doozy! I sing one of my favorite AM tunes, a sprawling iron & wine track, and get carried away by Leonard Cohen's poetry. God love ya for listening, I love doing these and I appreciate you a lot. Happy Thanksgiving!
Toward the middle of the 1990s, the shift away from loud grunge, post-hardcore, and punk resulted in a wide variety of more introspective sounds. Some bands were tagged with emo, some with slowcore, others with simply indie rock. From Death Cab for Cutie and John Vanderslice to Elliott Smith and Iron & Wine, the late 90s and early aughts were full bands turning down both the volume and tempo. San Diego's Pinback, comprised of veteran scene musicians Rob Crow and Armistead Burwell Smith IV, utilize a wide variety of instruments and approaches on their self-titled debut from 1999. A simple drum preset can carry an entire song, mixing a variety of analog keyboard and guitar sounds, while occasionally introducing samples, guitar-mimicking vinyl scratching, or vocal loops. It's a melancholy but charming debut that presents many interesting ideas that sometimes lack a second or third gear to make them truly inspired. The last time was at the socially distanced outdoor gig at Grove Studios over the summer. Which was our first time seeing Bobby in the band. To get things rolling, I asked the fans how they discovered Nina and the Buffalo Riders. Brenda became a fan after seeing the band open for the Steepwater Band at HopCat in Detroit. Within a song, the hairs on her arms were standing up and she was asking “Who is this band?”. It was a happy chance to be there that night, but it made for a lasting love for Nina and the Buffalo Riders.ShiAnn met Nina and the Buffalo Riders through other local Detroit bands. One time was all it took to become a fan. She has been supporting them ever since.Marie became a fan from the moment of Nina’s conception. She knew her beautiful daughter had the gift of music when she heard her singing at age 2 to Whitney Houston. Marie and Noel (Nina’s dad) couldn’t believe what they were hearing. Noel would bribe Nina for a dollar to sing songs at family get togethers when she was little. Eventually, she started playing guitar and wowed the family with a flawless rendition of “American Pie” by Don McLean. One of Noel’s cousins suggested Nina play at an open mic night. Nina at the young age of 13 and escorted by her dad, played that open mic night and it set her on a course to pursue a life in music.Xlo had been scouting out venues in Detroit for artists involved with Soundproof Detroit to perform. After stopping in at the Rusted Crow in Detroit, Xlo heard Nina on stage and dug the music. Reaching out to network led Xlo into becoming a fan and eventually working with Nina to produce a video. Be sure to check out the rap, dance, and nerdcore of Soundproof Detroit. On the Road with Nina and the Buffalo RidersIn order to keep playing music, Nina and the Buffalo Riders have had to migrate south for the winter. They have been posting short videos of some of the fun along the way. I asked Nina, Bobby, and Joe what have been some favorite moments so far.For Nina, a favorite moment occurred in Asheville, NC on the day that Biden won the election. The band setup on the streets to perform and there were people out celebrating the election. One overly excited woman nearly ran over other folks with her baby stroller trying to get closer to listen to Nina and the Buffalo Riders. As Nina and the Buffalo Riders are getting to the end of the song “Wish I Could Stay” a woman runs up out of nowhere and starts dancing. She dances into the street and ends up laying back on the hood of a car. The car then drives away with the dancing woman resting on the hood.Every single moment of being out on the road has been awesome for Bobby. If he had to pick one favorite it would be meeting actor/comedian Peter Dante in Key West. He took them to various bars and bought drinks. He even sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” with the band at karaoke. Joe’s favorite moment was the first night in Asheville. The band setup across the street from a park. Once they started playing people gathered around at a safe distance. Seeing the joy on people’s faces that day and each day since have been a highlight. The entire band agrees. Nina added that it is clear that people are starving for live music and being able to play music for them has been awesome.Questions from the FansWe flipped the questions over to the fans. Noel jokingly asked if Nina has enough strings and batteries. This brought a round of laughs. Noel then asked if Nina and the Buffalo Riders have any new gigs. Nina mentioned that they are currently in the Fort Myers area of Florida. They have played gigs at the Pink Piano in Lakeland and gigs at the Lani Kai Island resort.Maria wanted to know what has been most difficult about playing shows right now. The key issue is parking the RV and permits. Most cities require a permit for musicians to play on the street. In some cases, the requirements include background checks and insurance. All of which makes it nearly impossible to play unless you have a gig with a venue that will support live music during these times. This isn’t to say that Nina and the Buffalo Riders haven’t tried to work outside these restrictions. They were able to play in Miami for one day. They even tried performing in a cemetery, but this was shutdown by the police. Evidently the groundskeeper was all for it, but not so much the city authorities.Get in the VanBrenda asked if Nina and the Buffalo Riders have any summertime gigs lined up for Michigan. Turns out they do. On June 19th at Campit Outdoor Resort in Saugatuck, Nina and the Buffalo Riders will be part of the annual Saugatuck LGBQ Festival. They hope that more shows will spring up as the warmer temperatures allow for outdoor shows again. In particular, looking to get some gigs at Tangent Gallery and in Utica. In the midst of a pandemic, a lot of folks don’t want to travel. And it makes sense; you may not feel safe at a motel or even an AirBnB. Xlo thinks the idea of hitting the road like NIna and the Buffalo Riders is inspiring. He wanted to know who came up with the idea to get an RV and head out of town.Bobby relayed that it was sort of happenstance. He was at a buddy’s house and his friend's dog jumped the fence. They ran to find the dog at a house with an RV in the driveway. Bobby mentions that he loves the RV and starts talking with the owner. Next thing you know, Bobby’s driving home with an RV.Maria and Noel hosted Nina and the Buffalo Riders at their house while the band worked on getting the RV ready for the road. They then set sail for the south in search of musical adventure. In mid-February, look for Nina and the Buffalo Riders to steer their van into New Orleans. Afterwards, they plan to head west into Texas, Colorado, and then back to Michigan. Eventually they would like to head out to Montana, then down south to New Mexico and Arizona. What Led to a Life in MusicI love to learn about the origin of an artist. I asked Nina and the Buffalo Riders what led them to seek out a life in music. Bobby was quick to answer that he has always loved music. The movie and the soundtrack to the Lion King was incredibly inspiring as a child. He would sing along to all the songs and loves them today. He never expected to be a musician. He attended Feral Fest in Michigan and that is where he met Nina and Joe. He was inspired by them and became great friends. Ultimately this led to Bobby becoming a member of the band he loves.Joe is fairly sure his great-grandparents met at a piano bar. His dad was a DJ and his mom played piano. Music has always been a part of Joe’s life. At the age of 14, Joe got to see Bob Weir live. The energy of the fans and the band was captivating. After dozens of failed projects, Joe joined a band that played at Feral Fest and Nina and the Buffalo Riders opened. He was completely blown away. He and Nina became fast friends. The project band that played at Feral Fest fell apart and Nina reached out to ask Joe to join. He had an opportunity in another band, but felt his passion stirred by the music of Nina and the Buffalo Riders. Today, Joe couldn’t be happier with his choice. When Nina was young, she loved the emotional power of artists such as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Selena. She wanted to share that power with people through her voice. Once she started to play guitar Nina found singer-songwriters like Michelle Branch, Damien Rice, and Iron & Wine. From an early age, Nina has wanted to write and perform music. That drive carries forward today.New Music on the HorizonNina, Bobby, and Joe have been working with Mike (keyboards) and Oscar (guitar) to record new music. They have a five song EP ready and just need to get album art completed. Three songs were written in 2020. The other two are older songs that have seen plenty of live rotation, but have not previously made it into the recording studio. Nina is particularly excited for this release as both Joe and Bobby add in vocal harmonies. Sounds like this new album will be stellar. To engage with fans and provide them with an inside scoop, Nina and the Buffalo Riders will be launching a Patreon page. This will help the band make their music while giving fans some unique content to savor. In addition, be sure to check out Nina and the band on Twitch.Rounding out with a DreamFor our last topic of conversation, I asked everyone what would be their dream concert. For Nina, that dream concert would have been to see Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and The Band when they toured by train on the Festival Express tour. Bobby would have loved to have seen Bob Markely. Ideally, Bob would have seen Bobby grooving on the djembe and invited him up on stage to jam with Wailers. Joe was super specific in wanting to see The Grateful Dead at the Springfield Creamery Benefit show in Veneta, Oregon on Aug 27, 1972.Maria’s dream concert is Aerosmith. Doesn’t matter if it's the current day or back in the 70’s. Rocking out with Steven Tyler and the boys will work. Noel would have loved to have seen Santana at Woodstock. Just talking about the power of that performance by Santana had us all wanting to be there.Prince and Michael Jackson in concert is the dream concert for Xlo. We all completely agree that it would have been amazing to see them both together on stage. Brenda had an incredible experience seeing Chris Cornell and feels the same about seeing Nina and the Buffalo Riders. So her dream concert would be Nina and the Buffalo Riders with Chris Cornell. Wow!

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Frances England over Zoom video! Frances England fell into the kids' music world by accident. In 2007, she wrote and recorded a little homespun cd called Fascinating Creatures as a fundraiser for her son's preschool. She had no intention of anyone outside her own circle of family and friends hearing it, but word got out, and within a couple of years Frances went from playing at nursery schools and libraries, to Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. With a gift for capturing the wonders, simple pleasures, and beauty of childhood, Frances frames her music in ways both children and parents can appreciate. Her sparkly, acoustic pop songs are both catchy and heartfelt. In a Parents Choice Gold Award review, Lynne Heffley enthused, "England is an original, an exceptionally creative and musically astute children's artist whose unique musical vision was apparent in her debut album. With the authenticity of her alt-rock and acoustic folk rhythms, her expressive vocals and gentle, slightly offbeat approach to what it means to be a child - and a parent - England proves she again and again, she is the real deal."Critics have been effusive in their praise for Frances' work. Fascinating Creatures was the sole recording to win the 2007 Oppenheim Platinum Award for Music. Two years later, AOL named the album one of the Top Ten Children's CDs of the decade. Her album, Family Tree, was listed as one of the Best CDs of the Decade by Time Out New York Kids, and was named Album of the Year by About.com. USA Today called her album Mind of My Own, “phenomenal” and Blink of an Eye was named #2 album of the year by the Fids and Kamily Awards, a yearly poll compiled from kids music writers, radio programmers, and others in the industry. All of Frances’ cds have had #1 hits on Sirus XM Radio. In 2017, Explorer of the World, Frances’ fifth album for children and families, received a Grammy nomination for Best Children's Album. Frances England’s new "Honey" EP is a soothing and intimate collection of new and reimagined acoustic, wind-down tunes for children and families. Sonically, the album has the feel of an old Iron & Wine record with lyrics that speak to children and parents’ experiences. Recorded on tape at Tiny Telephone Studio in San Francisco, the sparse instrumentation leaves plenty of room for England’s lush, layered vocals to work their magic as she sings about red balloons, best friends, home and Daddy-Os. The first single, "Glue," a corona-coaster family anthem, is about appreciating the people you're stuck with, in good times and bad. The album is newly available on the new children's label 8 Pound Gorilla Records.England is a Grammy-nominated artist with a gift for capturing the wonders, simple pleasures and beauty of childhood in ways that both kids and parents appreciate. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jocelyn Mackenzie over Zoom video! Jocelyn Mackenzie is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, artist, and psychic medium. Her conviction to craft creates music, art, and messaging that is sensual, personal, and powerful. Holding intimate balance between vulnerability and strength, the self-taught songstress delicately constructs bold melodies that weave universal stories straight to the heart. Her debut solo album PUSH is a chamber pop homage to healing through radical self-love, to be released on Righteous Babe Records. Written entirely for string quartet in collaboration with five talented composers, each song on PUSH bravely shines light on dark spots of her past. The fearlessness in her songwriting combined with the orchestral arrangements of each song alchemizes her pain into a poultice, making the album itself a testimony to hope, heartbreak, and what it means to be human. Likened to the sounds of tUnE-yArDs, Kate Bush, and Regina Spektor, her sonic world traverses diverse terrain, making no stranger of the pop earworm, the humble singalong, and the orchestral tearjerker. With a versatile library of influences including Sia, They Might Be Giants, and ambient soundscapes, her songs cure melody, meaning, and instrumentation into fine blends of the sacred and profane. In 2007, Mackenzie co-founded indie-folk trio Pearl and the Beard, with whom she enjoyed a rich national and international touring history over the span of their eight year career. Their infectious blend of soaring instrumentation, soulful harmonies, and genuine lyricism anchored their songs into their listeners’ bones with depth and longevity. Musicians’ musicians, Pearl’s powerful stage presence shepherded them to perform alongside legacy artists such as Ani DiFranco, Neko Case, Bastille, Iron & Wine, Ingrid Michaelson, Lucius, Dar Williams, Lady Lamb, David Wax Museum, and Sharon Van Etten. In the years since Pearl released their farewell album, Mackenzie continued to write and produce music independently, launching her solo career with 2016’s juicy pop offering the Unlovely EP. The release’s five songs, including “Centenarian,” co-written by Ani DiFranco, openly touched on intimate personal trials Mackenzie had endured. Her musical ability to reveal intimate emotional truths with an unwaveringly buoyant sound was the fertile ground in which PUSH was planted.PUSH is due out on January 29, 2021 via Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records. We want to hear from you! On today’s special episode, join the talented Johanna Warren near her home in Wales for a private concert. Enjoy her plant-inspired lyrics as she is surrounded by the sounds of the forest. Johanna recently lent her voice to Netflix series ‘The Midnight Gospel’ and released her fifth solo album Chaotic Good on Carpark Records. Beyond her musical artistry, Johanna is a mystic, herbalist, Reiki Master, and advocate for the healing powers of Nature. For more from Johanna, catch her upcoming livestream concert on October 1. Tickets on sale now! “I’ve been thinking of life as one big roleplaying game,” Johanna Warren offers when asked why she chose to title her new album after a Dungeons & Dragons reference. “There’s chance, there’s choice, and there’s alignment—what forces in the universe do I choose to align myself with?” Chaotic Good is Warren’s fifth full-length album and first for Wax Nine/Carpark Records. It represents a moment of rupture in the singer-songwriter’s career as she transitions away from the quiet, folk-adjacent work that defined her early solo albums with a bold statement piece that demonstrates the breadth of her ambition. Here, Warren flits between crushing admissions set to spare piano solos and muscular declarations of independence that have more in common with grunge acts of bygone years than anything we’ve heard from Warren in the past. “The last few years I’ve had an urge to change my name, or create some alter-ego,” she says. “But I’ve come to realize that ‘Johanna’ is already just a character. We think we know who we are based on what’s already happened, but we’re allowed to make new choices.” The oceanic, soothing single “Bed of Nails” illustrates that realization perfectly when Warren sings: “I tried a little bit too hard to be myself/It turned me into something else.” Recording Chaotic Good was an exercise in self-reinvention. Warren decided to produce the album on her own, borrowing recording equipment from a friend to do much of the preliminary tracking alone in a garage. She enlisted a few key collaborators to fully enliven her vision, most notably former Sticklips bandmates Chris St. Hilaire and Jim Bertini. On the raucously resilient “Part of It,” Warren is joined by her musical brethren as she addresses a noncommittal narcissist and—a trademark of Warren’s work—the narrator’s complicity in her own suffering: “Don’t look at me like I’m the one holding you back/and I won’t look at you like you have something I lack.” Adding to the album’s dynamism is the fact that it took shape over the course of four years in studios across the United States while Warren was touring her most recent albums Gemini I and II. Warren uses words like “patchwork” and “scrapbook” to describe Chaotic Good; it is a collection of sonic snapshots that transport her to specific places in time with each listen. “This album is about learning how to be with myself after a lifetime of codependent relationships,” Warren says. You can hear that especially well on “Twisted,” which finds her confronting a former lover, and ultimately, letting them go. “I’m a warrior, but I give up,” Warren howls, the surrounding production warping and distorting as her raw vocal crests to an acidic scream. Though her lyrics are resigned, her delivery is anything but. It is a moment of total abandon, when the multitudinous aspects of a personality coalesce to form something at once dazzling and monstrous. “Chaotic Good is a metamorphosis,” Warren says. “It’s my phoenix moment. Everything I’ve done before was just building the funeral pyre.” Johanna Warren is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who began her career as a singer/songwriter in the Brooklyn-based psych folk band Sticklips. The group released two albums before disbanding in 2012, and after a stint performing backup vocals for Iron & Wine, Warren self-released her debut solo album, Fates, in 2013. The album prompted her to tour nationally under her own name, and since then, she’s led a nomadic existence, calling cities across the United States home for short periods of time. Over the past few years, Warren has toured alongside Mitski, Julie Byrne, and Marissa Nadler, but a life on the road hasn’t slowed her output. In 2015, she released her sophomore album nūmūn to acclaim, propelling her to the forefront of artists to watch in the second half of the decade. Warren dedicated the spellbinding collection of acoustically-driven songs to the phases of the moon and to the divine feminine — forces of great power and consequence that are all-too often overlooked. The following year, Warren announced a twin set of albums released on her own label Spirit House, which promoted a radically inclusive, artist-friendly ethos. Each of the songs on Gemini I corresponds with a song on Gemini II, which debuted later, in 2018. The two albums are in conversation with one another, offering up a character sketch of dueling personalities vying for acceptance. To contrast nūmūn, which was rendered using a simple palate of acoustic instruments, the arrangements on Gemini I and II integrated a wide array of instrumentation and more palpable percussion, furnished with help from a small cohort of Warren’s longtime collaborators. Following the release of Gemini II, Warren embarked on her extensive Plant Medicine Tour, during which she invited local herbalists, farmers, and activists to come and share resources with attendees about alternative remedies. In the spare moments between tour stops, Warren recorded her latest album in studios across the United States. Entirely self-produced, Chaotic Good is Warren’s first album for Wax Nine/Carpark and it is her boldest to date, finding her in a state of transition as she introduces listeners to a new phase of her artistry. In a relatively short amount of time, Matt Ross-Spang has grown from Sun Studio tour guide to one of the most sought-after producers and engineers in music. Having moonlighted behind the boards at Sun after business hours while juggling high-school, Matt helped bring the historic studio back to its analog roots and eventually stepped out on his own at the behest of Grammy-winner and Nashville studio staple Dave Cobb. This led to Matt engineering releases for John Prine, Jason Isbell, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amanda Shires and Josh Ritter, as well as helming records for Margo Price, Lucero and Iron & Wine's latest collaboration with Calexico. Recently, Amazon even plucked him to produce, curate and debut a unique digital audio series featuring Al Green's first new recording in nearly a decade. To sum it up best, NPR describes Ross-Spang as "a music history geek with a brilliant ear for blending studio precision with spontaneity," while Rolling Stone touts him as "one of the most trusted arbiters of the Memphis sound." That last moniker rings especially true this month, as Sony/Legacy celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of Elvis Presley's most pivotal years by releasing a massive 11CD box set and 2LP vinyl edition of performances from August 1969 at the International Hotel in Las Vegas. All originally recorded to 8-track and newly mixed to analog by Matt, this string of shows is especially notable for featuring a full orchestra and the live debut of one of the King's biggest hits, "Suspicious Minds." Recorded at Sam Phillips' iconic studio in Memphis, today's interview features Matt's insight on the psychology of recording, examples of records where the room acts as an instrument, his trajectory within the industry and how a career in documenting music has changed the way he listens. Matt's social media and additional information on his work can be found at southerngrooves.com. To learn more about Sam Phillips Recording Service, visit samphillipsrecording.com.

Chris and Rifa dig into another week of arts, culture, tech and diversity. This week we're both blown away by Icelandic indie film Woman At War starring Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir. Chris is also watching Sky Atlantic's sobering true-life 1980s drama Chernobyl about the Soviet Union's great nuclear disaster – and we aren't convinced by buddy comedy Wine Country, directed by Amy Poehler, which is up on Netflix. We also have starkly conflicting reactions to Malian photographer and DJ Fototala King Massassay's exhibition Iron Men, about iron workers and smelters in Mali's capital city of Bamako, which is at Brighton's Pheonix Gallery this month as part of Brighton Festival. Rifa gets annoyed with the English edition of Flow magazine from the Netherlands, while Chris loves N J Stallard's short story The White Cat that won the Aleph Prize. Let us know what you think about all the shiz we discussed over on Facebook and follow us on Insta and Twitter @Refigurepod. Phew, we packed a lot in this week. Hope you dig it. If you do, please give us a 'like' / a nice review / five star rating, wherever you listen to your podcasts – that sort of stuff hugely helps us, without a marketing budget or anything. Thank you. XX
Today we have an interview with @MrPseu but first we check out the message of Manufacture of Consent by Twelve Foot Ninja. Isn’t this a book title? http://bit.ly/2URzBoC In I Heard This Happened: Noctiluca, a post rock album from Seattle artist Helms Alee. Nicky’s comments: : The album wafts from tight airy Harmonies to bludgeoning heavy guitars as deftly as a group can. It’s not quite lofi but feels purposefully minimalist at times. It’s dark and moody...albeit it won’t let you simmer in any specific mood too long, while never feeling jarring. http://helmsalee.bandcamp.com/album/noctiluca Kyle Meadows new record entitled Full Time Fever is my pock for this week. I wanted a record that would force me to slow down to listen. This record does that with falsetto vocals in a chorus of whispers with meandering loops of acoustic guitar. Lydia Loveless ia a singer-songwriter from Ohio known for her “blast it to the back of the room” voice. She sat with Rhett while in Boston to talk about her early life as a musician, grappling with writer’s block and self-imposed obstacles, and that time she tried stand up comedy. She’s been writing and playing music since she was 14, and at the tender age of 28, is learning how to slow down and get comfortable with herself. Lydia has toured with artists such as the Old 97s, Supersuckers, Jason Isbell, Iron & Wine, and Drive-By-Truckers. Her music has been praised by Rolling Stone, NPR, Pitchfork, SPIN, Stereogum, Chicago Tribune, and more. She was the subject of the 2016 documentary Who Is Lydia Loveless?, directed by Gorman Bechard.

A troubadour, a poet with a guitar, a stage banter-conversationalist - all terms that describe Matt Wheeler's music & performance style well. Matt’s songwriting paints pictures with words, often drawing inspiration from classic works of literature or simply spinning new original stories in song. Lyrics & dynamics play a key role, as each song really means something, and each one is delivered with an honesty that is compelling. When playing solo, Matt draws audiences in with engaging stories and interaction, while shining the spotlight on the lyrical strength of his songs. When joined by his band Vintage Heart, the poignant lyrics meet expressive strings and driving percussion to make orchestral folk songs that rewards repeated listens. The result is a pleasing sound that recalls wordsmiths like Denison Witmer, Iron & Wine, and James Taylor.Visit his website: http://www.mattwheeleronline.com/
Eliza Hardy Jones is a musician, textile artist, and self-proclaimed “aggressive feminist.” From her current project transcribing women’s folk songs into sing-able quilts, to the making of her 2016 solo album, “Because Become,” she shares stories about synesthesia, textile as currency, running for mental problem solving, and synchronicity in the Russian Arctic. Throughout, Eliza celebrates the untold story of women as the progenitors of culture, and makes a deeply personal argument for the thorough investigation into who controls the official narratives of our national, social, and personal identities. You may have caught Eliza in the past touring with Grace Potter, Iron & Wine, or mewithoutYou, but you can always find her music and quilts online at www.elizahardyjones.com. In this weeks super long and strong 10th episode, to commemorate the 500th time our podcast has been downloaded by the WORLD, we go simply RED on your ass. No, nothing at all to do with Mick Hucknall, although we are treated to a special guest reporting on notable ginger Prince Harry. We're talking politics, baby! We start off with a tradional life update, and once we've got the standard niceties out of the way, we whip into Jono's recent trip to see Professor Harry Glasbeek launch his book Capitalism: A Crime Story. In traditional Jono form he doesn't really engage with the concepts, but has a lot to say about Harry's peformance. What a loveable dope Jono is. A class A dope! We then find out about Jono's own personal socialist utopian experiences, at the Burning Man festival. A particularly famous tent gets a through working over, as the boys unpack unprotected sex orgies for people with herpies. FUN! After Dorje brings the tone down a notch or two with his customary penchant for all things crass, we move into our review of the week, the excellent The Death of Stalin. Just when it looks like we will get through the week without a guest caller, Rupert from Riverview gives the guys a bell for his take on The Royal Wedding. Things go a little sidewise when he takes issue with the Socialist inclinations of the podcast and launches into a spirited attack on Jono and percieved hypocrisies. He finished with some decidely conservative view points, that sound a little too close to Breibart for comfort. Jono comes home strong with his Belligerent Burns for the week, a recent gig he attended featuring the rather disappointing performer Iron & Wine, who railed against his audience for being lacklustre and lacking in enthusiasm. Get your political fix this week, as the boys give you the REAL issues, with real DEPTH and very little clarity or maturity. Guaranteed.

Grab Some leftovers, take a break from Holiday shopping specials, and join the Boys of OUTSpoken “After Thanksgiving Show.” World Aids Day is now on our minds more so than other with the change in political front. Today we Talk with Gaye Weiss and Kaleb Ashby about AIDS, Spokane SAN and World AIDS Day. Camille Bloom CAMILLE BLOOM Seattle-based, Gibson endorsed musician Camille Bloom has performed at premiere venues in eight different countries including Canada, the U.S., Germany, Netherlands, England, Denmark, Belgium and Ireland. Combining percussive guitar and a voice that can “purr and wail” (Victory Review), “Camille’s music can make even the rain dance.” (Mike Galaxy – Indy Hits promotion). The powerhouse singer/songwriter has been said to sound ”like Ani Difranco dipped in maple syrup”. (Spokane Inlander). Once a high school teacher, Camille was lured out of her education career by an investor who promised her thirty to fifty thousand dollars if she would leave her job. Camille immediately applied for leave in the district and after successfully negotiating a contract set up a meeting date with the investor to sign all of the paperwork and make it official. Unfortunately, the investor never showed up to sign the contract and was never heard from again. Having already given notice at her job with a year’s sabbatical, Camille had nothing to do but give it her best shot on the road and see where it would lead. In the last eight years, Camille has had songs licensed for use in twenty one shows on a variety of channels including MTV, E! and Oxygen. Additionally, she has completed over 30 national / international tours and has had her music played on over 40 major and college radio stations throughout the U.S. and Western Europe. She also charted on the European FAR (Freeform American Roots) Charts in 2009 with other music greats Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and Iron & Wine. She won the “Best Female Indie Artist” at the Ladylake Music Awards in 2010. Camille’s last full length release Never Out Of Time was released in 2011 and she enlisted the help of star producer Martin Feveyear, whose production credits include REM, Presidents of the United States, Rosie Thomas and Brandi Carlile. The album and the artist were lauded nationally by Music Connection, The Advocate, M for Musicians and more. Her new EP Big Dreams is scheduled for a November 2013 release. Known for her incredibly dynamic voice and edgy acoustic rock, Camille’s U.S. touring has included gigs at New York City’s Bitter End, Boston’s Club Passim, Seattle’s Triple Door, Tractor, and Crocodile, Los Angeles’ The Mint and over 150 other rooms spanning the nation. She has shared the stage with numerous acts including Smashmouth, SUGARCULT, Metric, Carbon Leaf, Brandi Carlile, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) and many more. The Seattle Gay News calls Camille “A dynamite performer who combines a mix of twisted acoustic funk rock with haunting melodies and soaring vocals.” In addition to touring full time with club dates and festival appearances, Camille takes time out of her schedule to direct a Rock N Roll camp for kids in Seattle – and she also makes regular stops at youth centers – performing and talking to kids about using positive outlets such as music to cope with life’s struggles. Camille has gained an avid and adoring fanbase with her high energy and intensely personal show. She loves touring at home and abroad and has booked herself on numerous European tours. Check out Camille’s website and learn more about her and the tours – www.hotmesssunday.com

Continuing with our theme of "Vaguely Folkish Alterna-Emo," I chat with Cahn about the bane of our 2006: Hey There Delilah by The Plain White T's. Cahn reminisces about being subjected to the song while on the clock, and I reminisce about hearing the song while buying alcohol in bulk. There's a story about an unusual phone-in request to the local radio station, Cahn adds a new bit to his routine, and we spend much more time than usual on music we actually like. Discussed on this episode: Jethro Tull, David Kauffman and Eric Caboor, Neil Young, My Morning Jacket, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, James Taylor Swift, Nirvana, and Iron & Wine
This mix grew out of a collection of vacation songs. I wanted to put some tunes together for relaxing on the pier or around the fire. Once I started finding songs I decided to make all of them vocal acoustic tunes and the rest just fell into place. The whole mix is nice and slow and quiet. And of course acoustic. There are a few great covers here, like the Sarah Jarosz & Phosphoerscent covers. I used some all-time favorite artists in here - Avetts, Sufjan, Andrew Bird, Iron & Wine, Paul Simon. Mostly this is a mix of older songs with some new-ish cuts. There's not much else to say other than I really like this mix, and I can see listening to it for years to come. Enjoy. Critics have compared Bad Bad Meow's style with the likes of Violent Femmes, The White Stripes, and The Pixies-all revolutionary artists in their own right, and an honor to be mentioned among. But where many artists fall victim to replicating their musical predecessors, Bad Bad Meow emulates only the vision and approach required of a Jack White to continue breaking boundaries. Using an array of auxiliary instruments coursing over hook after catchy hook, BBM straps the boots on once again to kick down a few more walls with their third release, EP "Run Through the Middle." Recorded at Chicago's world-renown Engine Studios (Andrew Bird, Iron Wine, Modest Mouse), this collection of tracks starts with a kick, downshifts and then kicks even harder. Bad Bad Meow has solidified its voice since bringing some Carolina twang to the Chicago scene, and it's not an inside voice.

An Arizona band led by singer-guitarist Joey Burns and drummer/multi- instrumentalist John Convertino, Calexico has spent a decade and a half as a go-to purveyor of atmospheric, even cinematic desert pop. With the aid of trumpets, pedal-steel guitars and piano, Calexico has become a festival favorite (playing a set at Bonnaroo earlier this summer), recorded high-profile collaborations (including 'In the Reins,' a tremendous album with Iron & Wine), and evolved into a consistent studio force (most recently releasing the well-received 'Carried to Dust'). Here, Calexico performs live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
It was bound to happen sooner or later, but a woman has been recruited to bring some class and intelligence to Couch Surfing. John is joined by Lisa Tobias from the Hypersensitive Podcast. They discuss the well roundosity (it's a word, now) of Lost and its fourth season. The both of them show some love for Indiana Jones & The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, and then John ruins everything by turning his nose up at Juno. Thankfully, Diablo Cody still comes out on top as generally awesome. Things go dark and depressing when The Mist rolls into the conversation, but childhood nostalgia brings the show back up, with talk of The Gate and Fraggle Rock. More Canadian mail gets answered, this time in regards to viral marketing. All the while, John searches for moral support from the audience. The following artists can be heard in this episode:Iggy Pop, Groove Armada, The Temptations, John Williams, Angels & Airwaves, Modest Mouse, Stars, Iron & Wine, The Moldy Peaches, Coldplay, Gary Numan, Dead Can Dance, Jon Brion, James Newton Howard, Michael Hoenig & J. Peter Robinson, Johnny Law, APM, Hooverphonic, The Fraggles, Arco, L7, Kathleen Edwards, Erasure and Boy In Static.
