Despite the steady increase in annual sales of vinyl records since 2008, record stores across the country have been closing — except in Denver! The Mile High record store scene is as strong as ever. We've got new shops popping up and old favorites like Wax Trax expanding to new locations. Record Store Day, aka Black Friday for music lovers, is this Saturday, April 12, so host Bree Davies is sitting down with Denver Post arts and entertainment reporter John Wenzel to talk about how Denver is bucking the national trend and where you can get all the special releases.  For a full list of participating record stores across the state, see Record Store Day's official roundup. Bree mentioned Wax Trax's “rules” for Record Store Day. For more on the Vinyl Me Please saga, check out John and Bree's previous conversation on City Cast Denver.  What's your favorite record store in Denver? Are you going to be there on Saturday? Folk music of the 1960s and 1970s was a genre that was always shifting and expanding, yet somehow never found room for so many. In the sounds of soul-folk, Black artists like Terry Callier and Linda Lewis began to reclaim their space in the genre, and use it to bring their own traditions to light- the jazz, the blues, the field hollers, the spirituals- and creating something wholly new, wholly theirs, wholly ours. Soul-Folk (Bloomsbury, 2024) traces the growing imprints of soul-folk and how it made its way from folk tradition to subgenre. New treat for you Buddies on this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts. On our 100th episode of VCP, we feature a conversation taking us behind the music: specifically, I'm speaking with Cicely Balston of AIR Studios in London. Earlier this year Cicely was awarded the 2023 Music Producer's Guild "Mastering Engineer of The Year" honor - and for good reason! With over a decade in the field, she began to develop her trade back in 2013 at Gearbox Records, an all-analog shop known for cutting on a vintage Skully lathe. She moved on to AIR Studios in 2016, with a detour at Alchemy Mastering (later acquired by AIR) in between her return to Sir George Martin's enterprise in 2020. She's been involved in some terrific releases of late courtesy of Vinyl Me Please, including the exciting recent release of Chalino Sanchez' "15 Exitos 15". She's been part of working on projects from artists like David Bowie, to Young MC, Busta Rhymes, Witch Fever, Sun Ra and a litany of artists across many genres and styles. We touch on that, as well as navigating mastering from digital files and analog both for today's hungry vinyl consumers. As the "vinyl resurgence" continues to go full speed ahead, the mastering side of things is in great hands with Cicely and other mastering engineers taking the baton from their predecessors. This episode has it all: science, music, laughs, and some name dropping (mostly by me). Let's jump into this terrific conversation now on Vinyl Community Podcasts!   For more information on host Concert Buddie: https://www.youtube.com/@ConcertBuddie   For more information on guest Cicely Balston c/o AIR Mastering (London): https://www.airstudios.com/cicely-balston/   For more information on Vinyl Community Podcasts: https://vinylcommunitypodcasts.com/

On this trip around the turntable, Souldisco (Nadine) hosts a fun and insightful conversation about Vinyl Me, Please - the U.S. subscription vinyl service and independent record label. Founded in 2013 by Cameron Schaefer, VMP was initially established as a record of the month club, offering curated vinyl selections delivered straight to the doorsteps of it's members. Since then, it has evolved into a comprehensive music platform, encompassing record releases, online content, and an active community of music lovers. Vinyl Me, Please has carved out a niche in the music industry by combining the joy of vinyl collecting with a curated listening experience and a vibrant community. It's dedication to quality curation, attention to detail in packaging and presentation, and commitment to supporting artists have endeared the label to vinyl enthusiasts around the world. By bridging the gap between past and present, mainstream and obscure, Vinyl Me, Please continues to play a significant role in preserving the art and appreciation of vinyl records while championing the power of music discovery. Joining in this conversation is Sr. Manager of Customer Care at VMP Paul Bass (or Paulium for VMP members in the know) to share details from the perspective of a longtime employee of VMP. Rounding out the panel is Rocco (Pieces of Vinyl) - a fervent VMP champion, and Michael 45 - a longtime customer of VMP who frequently reviews the latest and greatest products offered by VMP on his influential YouTube channel. Great to be back, Buddies! Thanks for tuning in to this latest 'sode of Vinyl Community Podcasts and the series "Mind of The Record Collector". For this latest trip around the turntable I'm joined by fellow record collector Rocco Richardson, host of the YouTube Channel "Pieces of Vinyl". Rocco has done an OUTSTANDING job of launching his channel and providing his audience with not only terrific vinyl news, tips, and music variety, but his production value is second to none - arguably the best out there. Though this conversation I learned there is a distinct reason behind that, and we explore his 15 month+ journey so far in the trenches of the YouTube algorithm and Vinyl Community at large. We learn about Rocco's own collecting journey, including where his wide palate of taste in music comes from, and we touch on a new opportunity that has presented itself here recently for Rocco to collaborate with the subscription service Vinyl Me Please. Big doings, Buddies! All this and more coming up on this latest conversation on Vinyl Community Podcasts! Welcome back to another episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts! This spin on the dance floor sees our friend Nadine c/o Souldisco return to our airwaves to share a splendid conversation with Jared "Jay B" Boyd on the recent boxset reissue effort from Vinyl Me, Please titled: "Truth Is Where It's At -- A Gospel Truth Collection". The Gospel Truth Label (aka Stax Records Gospel Label), was an imprint of the famous Stax Records label from Memphis, Tennessee. The Gospel Truth series debut in 1972 and produced over 20 albums until 1978, featuring some of the biggest names in Gospel music: The Rance Allen Group, The Staple Singers, The Soul Stirrers, The Pilgrim Jubilees, and The Mighty Clouds of Joy. These albums featured a wide range of Gospel music styles including traditional Gospel, contemporary Christian music, and Soul Gospel.  The Gospel Truth series was known for its high-quality production and arrangements, with some of the most talented musicians and producers in the industry working on the albums. Lauded for it's powerful and uplifting messages, this series featured songs + albums touching on themes of faith, hope, and love. Although Stax Gospel and The Gospel Truth series had a relatively short lifespan, they made a significant impact on the Gospel music industry and helped to popularize Gospel music outside of the church. The legacy of Stax Gospel and The Gospel Truth series lives on, with their influence felt in the music of contemporary Gospel artists and the continued popularity of Gospel music worldwide. Jay B authored the special 20-page Listening Notes booklet included in this boxset. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, the box set includes 6LPs on 180g black vinyl, with AAA lacquers cut from the original tapes by Ryan K. Smith of Sterling Sound. We trust you'll find this conversation informative, interesting, and fun! We had the pleasure of interviewing WILSN over Zoom video!Australian vocal powerhouse WILSN is thrilled to announce her debut album, Those Days Are Over, out February 3 on Ivy League Records/Universal MusicAustralia (Rolling Blackouts C. F., Hatchie). She also revealed a US headline tour (dates below), following her run with Allen Stone. A fusion of pop, soul, Motown and jazz both classic yet contemporary, WILSN's unbelievable voice & honeyed sound on the record are showcased on single & video debuted today on Under the Radar – “Hurts So Bad” featuring Josh Teskey, lead singer of award-winning Melbourne blues-rock band The Teskey Brothers (even Chris Hemsworth is a fan). Built from a trumpet melody by friend & acclaimed horn player Billy Aukstik (Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley), the heart-wrenching break-up song is accompanied by a video from Triana Hernandez, where the masterful performers are in full flight. “Right before Covid hit, I toured through Europe and the UK with The Teskey Brothers,” WILSN explains. “I was already a fan before this but seeing their show every night and occasionally getting up to sing with them in their set really solidified my love for the band. Josh is one of my favourite singers in the world and I feel super lucky he's singing with me on my debut record.”Studying at Melbourne, Australia's prestigious Victorian College of the Arts and playing shows there, WILSN – real name Shannon Busch - was soon noticed by international publishing juggernaut Pulse Music Group (Kehlani, Yebba) / Native Tongue (Courtney Barnett, Aldous Harding) - even going on to play the Melbourne Grand Prix. She briefly moved to Nashville to work with GRAMMY-winning writers, which helped hone her craft for this full album. The influence of soul and powerhouse vocal divas loom large over her debut album, Those Days Are Over. Songs like “If You Wanna Love Me,” “Tell Me” and “Hurts So Bad” ooze with the sound, feel and all the emotion of classic soul. Yet while the album is steeped in the sounds of yesterday, WILSN and her partner and producer Stephen Charles (Blessed, Tyne James Organ) took care to balance those classic elements with modern production techniques, leaning on Charles' background in hip hop production to amplify the grooves, dialing up the bottom end and keeping a modern excitement in the mix to make sure the record stood up sonically to contemporary releases. The result is a masterful work, at once timeless and of the now. The album will also be on Apple Music Spatial Audio and vinyl via Vinyl Me Please. We want to hear from you! It's that sneaky second gifting season of the year (dads, grads, retirements, anniversaries…you get it!), and we're here to answer your calls for help. Ooh, speaking of calls: Want to leave us a voicemail at 833-632-5463 and share any thoughts/feelings that demand our podcasting attention?   If it's time to gift someone a watch: Max Bill for Junghans and Baume & Mercier Classima are classics and about $1k. Uniform Wares has minimalist vibes and top out around $500. Check out Fewer Finer for some vintage options! We also recommend looking into a sporty/casual vintage watch from Casio or Seiko—Foundwell and eBay are great places to explore (this one, this one!). Also: Swatch does custom. If you're looking for a watch for a little, Flik Flak's still got it (see: their recent Hodinkee collaboration), and Parchie and Mini Kyomo are cute for kids, too. For true watch experts, turn to Hodinkee and Dimepiece.   For men turning 40 whose watch taste is too $$$: We love the idea of a signet ring, and Kathryn Bentley does great ones. We also recommend a record player (and personally endorse Plus Audio and Technics by Panasonic Direct Drive Player System via eBay). To add to the record collection, maybe gift a subscription to Vinyl Me Please or round-up albums that came out during their birth year. Related gift: fancy speakers like the ones by Oda. Nice luggage is also a good call—we love Want Les Essentiels, Porter-Yoshida, and classics like Rimowa, Tumi, and Calpak. For hobby gifts, how about a surfboard, a film camera from Photodom, ceramics classes (s/o to Artshack near us!), or pickleball gear from Recess or Nettie (on the topic of pickleball, this New York mag profile of Connor Pardoe). Last but not least, NORMALIZE GIVING MEN FLOWERS!    For retirement gifts: Ask close coworkers to participate in something personal—maybe use Tribute or Padlet or go old-school and collect pictures and letters to make a scrapbook. We also love Storyworth! Or how's about helping them get oriented with a new hobby: For the dad in our VM, maybe a Backroads Bike Tour or a Bianchi bike (find them and other snazzy bikes used on Bike Exchange). There's also personal training: For a virtual option, check out Future (a good review).    When someone's having a baby but not their first one: Set the parent up with a massage (maybe an at-home one through Zeel) or food delivery from Ipsa, Three Owls, or The Culinistas. Treat them to a robe, slippers, a weighted blanket from Bearaby, or a bed tray (Chairish and 1stdibs for cool vintage ones and West Elm, and Offi for new ones) Or: Get something to keep the sibling busy! Non-messy craft projects like needlepoint/sewing kits (love Unwind Studio and LittleExplorersPlay) or a subscription to The Picture Book Club. For the new baby, what about a not-hand-me-down, home-from-the-hospital look from Makie or Lewis? Or something keepsake that second (and third and fourth) kids tend to get less of like a handknit blankie or a puzzle name stool from Damhorst Toys.   What to maybe, possibly ask for when you move into a new home: A return-address stamp from Paper Source or custom house numbers from House Number Lab or Casson. Outdoor stuff can be pricier than expected, so ask for plants from Fast Growing Trees, Plant Gem, and David Austin Roses, a local-nursery gift card, or gardening tools from The Floral Society or Terrain. What about a Solo Stove or a Barebones Living Portable 30" Fire Pit? Or a grill! We like the Weber Spirit II E-210 LP and the Lodge Sportsman's Pro Cast Iron Grill. Get into composting with an indoor bin from Bamboozle. Entertaining stuff is a good call—think an Insalata Serving Bowl or platters from Conran Shop, Bitossi Home, Christian Lacroix, Farmhouse Pottery, vintage spongeware from The Six Bells, and vintage Limoges on Etsy. Ooh, and framing, c/o your local frame shop or Framebridge! Finally, stools: Artek, TipToe, Bed Bath & Beyond, Metal Lab, and ChezRai ones specifically. I talk with Chase Diamond. Well, how to leverage email marketing to grow your business. This is the business of eCommerce episode one 25 Charles (00:16): Today's episode is sponsored by drip, drip. It's a world's first e-commerce CRM and a tool that I personally use for email marketing and automation. Now, if you're ever in an eCommerce store, you need to have drip to try and. Here's why. Drip offers one-click integrations for both Shopify and Magento. There's robust segmentation, personalization, and revenue dashboards. To give you an overview of how your automation emails are performing, one of my favorite features of drip is the visual workflow builder. It gives you a super easy way to build out your automation world visually and see the entire process. It lets you get started quickly, but also build very complex automation roles. It's powerful, but also easy to learn. Unlike a lot of email tools that offer the same type of automation. To get a demo of drip today, you can go head over to drip.com/boe that's drip.com/b O E now under the show. Welcome to the business of eCommerce, the show that helps eCommerce retailers start, launch and grow their eCommerce business. I'm your host, Charles Polaski and I'm here today with chase diamond. Chase is the cofounder of boundless labs, a top email marketing agency since launching boundless labs in June of 2018 they have helped their clients and hundreds of millions of emails resulting in over a 25 million and attributable revenue. I asked chase on the show today to chat about how you can use email to help grow your eCommerce business. So, Hey chase, how are you doing today? Chase (01:38): I'm doing well, thank you. How are you doing? Yeah. Awesome to have you on the show. Charles (01:41): So email marketing. I kinda, we were talking before the show about this and this, it's a very wide world. We kind of talk about that. What do you usually, when you kinda start looking at initially the eCommerce business, right? What do you kind of focus on first? Are you looking at a kind of a transactional sort of thing? Marketing? Like what makes sense [inaudible] to begin with?

It took a great deal of time and almost as much disappointment in the process, but Andrew Winistorfer is finally making a living as a music writer. Since coming on as the editorial director for Vinyl Me, Please, Winistorfer spearheaded the record subscription service's music coverage and assembled a staff of skilled contributors to assist him. Along the way, he helped put together two ambitious coffee table books, including the just-released Best Record Stores In The United States, along with contributing liner notes to celebrated reissues and handling A&R for VMP's new "Classics" division. In many ways, it's a dream job for Winistorfer, especially when taking into account the long and uncertain road that brought him to this point. Shortly before the book's release, My First Band host Tyler Maas stopped by the Midwest office of Vinyl Me, Please in downtown Madison to talk about the exciting things Winistorfer is doing now and to take a trip down memory lane. The two reminisced about their time working together on their college newspaper (The Advance-Titan at UW-Oshkosh), compared horror stories about the difficult and ever-changing world of entertainment writing, and chronicled their separate paths to the ultra-rare distinction of making a career in modern journalism. During the extensive conversation, Winistorfer told the story of playing a college house party with his one and only band, admitted he came close to quitting music writing to become a manager at Target and talked about how writing about his record collection in alphabetical order would ultimately change the course of his life. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and Mystery Room Mastering. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and the title track from Vinyl Me, Please's Classics record for the month of December — B.B. He swung by the AD HQ to sit down with Justin and discuss the new record, recording with Dean Ween of Ween, the influence of Sonic Youth, working with Kim Gordon, and how collaborating with his “sister” Courtney Barnett helped shape the new album. The edited version of our talk is up now, but here’s the full spiel, uncut and undiluted. Then, we’re dive into the ECM Records vaults to discuss the first installment of the AD guide to the long-running jazz, classical, and experimental music label.

"It takes tine to grow what you hope is a quality company." - Tyler Barstow Tyler is a co-founder of Vinyl Me, Please and currently serves as their Head of Content. While working on the idea for, and early stages of, Vinyl Me, Please, he worked as a Support Agent at CoSupport in Chicago. Prior to that he worked with a non-profit in Raleigh, NC. "Vinyl Me, Please is a record of the month club. The best damn record club out there, in fact. Our mission is help people explore, experience, and enjoy music on a deeper level. A tall order, maybe, but it’s what gets us out of bed every morning with a thunderous shout. We do that both by sending you great music every month and by making sure you have a ton of fun each step of the way. Music is important, and so are you, and we work our asses off to make sure we do good by both. We believe in the power of the album as an art form. That music is a form of connection. That an album isn’t just something you own, but something that becomes a part of you. And we offer a full sensory experience that encourages you to deeply connect with the music you’re listening to. Vinyl is a tangible representation of the music you love, and brings with it a ritual you shouldn’t live without. What you listen to and how you listen to it matters. After a long break, it's the big 4-0 today, and I'm thrilled to have music industry guru Jim McDermott joining us for our fortieth episode! From Warner to PolyGram to Island to Universal to Sony, Jim's three decades of experience in marketing have seen him at the helm of album campaigns for the likes of David Bowie, New Order, Sheryl Crow, U2, Depeche Mode, Guns N' Roses, The Replacements and more. In July of this year, he began his own podcast -- How To Fix The Music Business -- where he chats with insiders and musicians to find out how the industry can survive and still fuel artists both creatively and financially. In this chat, Jim drops lots of great industry knowledge and we also discuss how ditching his vinyl in the CD era actually led to his career in music, his early and current vinyl obsessions, a funny backstage meeting with The Cure's Robert Smith and why sending fake dog poop in the mail can sometimes work wonders! If you heard my recent chat with Rocky Votolato, you may remember us discussing a new 7" he appears on as part of the Live On Lacquer series, where artists cover each other's work and do so without any overdubs or tweaking -- all sounds are directly recorded onto acetate as a lathe machine cuts the record's information in real time, before it's sent off for duplication. Today, Levi Seitz from Live On Lacquer as well as Black Belt Mastering joins me to discuss the 7" series, his iconic Scully Lathe, the art of mastering for both digital and vinyl releases, whether there's truth to some of vinyl's biggest buzz words and much more! Levi's résumé includes work with Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, Macklemore collaborator Wanz and even vinyl cutting for upcoming reissues of Mother Love Bone's first two releases as well as a forthcoming live Pearl Jam 3LP set, so this is a great chat for anyone interested in how sound is cut directly to vinyl. Visit blackbeltmastering.com to learn more about Levi's work, and make sure to enter our contest this week where you and a friend could both win the Rocky Votolato / Noah Gundersen Live On Lacquer 7", graciously provided by Levi for our listeners!   SPONSORS: Pinwheel Records, 1722 W. 18th St. in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood; KeepersRecordClub.com, where you can save 10% on all subscriptions with promo code VINYLEMERGENCY at check out.   If you like the show, leave us an iTunes review or donate to keep us up and running and you'll be entered into the Mint Condition Coalition, giving you entry into a gigantic giveaway at the end of 2016 for records and swag from Vinyl Me Please, Warner Bros., Topshelf, Wax Mage, Hey Mercedes and much more. Products of the Mind: A Conversation About the Intersection of Business + Creativity

Products of the Mind Episode 46: The Best Damn Record Club – Vinyl Me, Please    Welcome to Episode 46 of Products of the Mind. On this episode, I speak with Vinyl Me, Please founders Matt Fiedler & Tyler Barstow. “As things changed we always had this idea that it would be cool to build just the coolest … music club ever.” Today I chat with the entrepreneurial partners behind Vinyl Me, Please: Matt Fiedler & Tyler Barstow. The discussion is brief, but we get a great rundown from the perspective of the founders: these two discuss how they came together and discovered new music, and ultimately launched “the best damn record club.” We’ll hear about the challenges of being a part-time entrepreneur, as well as managing rapid growth. They’ll recall the logistical challenges they faced as a startup and how the challenge grew when their business expended. They’ll briefly discuss some of their solutions as well as their current philosophy on relationships between vendors and customers. Of course we’ll talk a little bit about music, as well as some of the history of vinyl and the role of online music providers like Spotify and Soundcloud. We’ll also hear a bit about some recent work with My Morning Jacket and Glass Animals. Thanks for Checking Out Products of the Mind!   When Seattle-based singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato began releasing solo albums in the late 90's -- at a time when vinyl was all but out of the mainstream consciousness -- it was important to him that every single release of his was pressed to wax. Fast forward to 2016, and he's now celebrating the 10th anniversary reissue of "Makers" on Barsuk Records -- his favorite in his discography, and viewed as his crowning achievement among his fans -- with a tour fronting a talented band that gives new thrilling dynamics to that album's intimacy. Downstairs at Chicago's famed Schubas Tavern, Rocky and I chat about his DIY aesthetic, the idea that music isn't truly real until it's on vinyl, sharing records with his brother and Waxing bandmate Cody (who later went on to form The Blood Brothers), motorcycle movie soundtracks, raising his kids on Neutral Milk Hotel, recording a recent seven-inch live directly to lacquer, recording stories with Chris Walla and Casey Foubert, bouncing around between some of indie-rock's most prolific labels, the differences between himself now and the Rocky who wrote and recorded "Makers," and much more!
