Last week we revisited our conversation with Usher to celebrate his Super Bowl performance and the incredible career resurgence he's had over the last couple of years. In thinking about our catalog, I thought there was another conversation worth revisiting - Malcolm Gladwell speaking with Ziggy Marley about the cultural influence the tiny country of Jamaica and Ziggy's dad, Bob Marley, have had over the last half a century. The Bob Marley biopic One Love was released in theaters yesterday. I hope anyone familiar with Bob Marley will go see it at some point. If only to keep the conversation about his songs and his political thinking alive and to guard against his legacy becoming further whitewashed and commercialized. So listen Malcolm's conversation with Ziggy from a couple of years back, see the movie and then spend some time with the Marley catalog and with some of the other great music to come out of that era from Prince Buster to Alton Ellis and beyond.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Join us for an unforgettable night of music and conversation as we welcome reggae chart-topper Marcia Aitken, veteran artist Carl Meeks, and promoter extraordinaire Kevin “KP Roots Man” Prunell to the show. Hear the stories behind the music and get up close and personal with some of the biggest names in reggae. Don't miss this chance to feel the love with Marcia's timeless classic “I'm Still in Love with You Boy” and much more!Marcia Aitken is a reggae singer best known for her recordings in the late 1970s, produced by Joe Gibbs along with Errol Thompson. She concentrated on lovers' rock and recorded a popular version of the Alton Ellis song “I'm Still in Love With You” (as “I'm Still in Love with You Boy”, recorded while still at Excelsior), which was a number one hit in Jamaica and successful UK and US reggae charts. Is there anything else you would like to know about her?
Love Sunday Oldies but Goodies: Jamaica Ska, Rocksteady Trending all night.Jamaican Oldies music featuring Ken Boothe, Delroy Wilson, Gregory Isaacs, John Holt, Alton Ellis, Dennis Brown, Derrick Harriott and Freddie McKay We're independent” is the joyous refrain heard on Derrick Morgan's “Forward March,” which conveys the exuberance felt by Jamaicans when their island, a British colony since 1655, became a sovereign nation. Ska was developed in the late 1950s in Kingston studios, and the emergent sound on “Forward March” is still tethered to the R&B shuffle that influenced it, though it is slower than the ska beat heard on recordings made in the next few years. In 1960, Morgan occupied the top seven positions on the Jamaica charts and is regarded as the King of Ska; on Aug. 6, Morgan, now 82, will be honored by the Jamaican government with an Icon Award at the Independence Grand Gala in Kingston. #giveback #jamaica #trending #love #reggae #ska

June McDoom - "On My Way" from the 2022 June McDoom EP on Temporary Residence Ltd. Singer/songwriter June McDoom taps into her family history for her music: her parents relocated from Jamaica to New York City in the 1970s. As an adult, she began listening to folk artists from that era, like Joan Baez and Judee Sill, vintage soul from The Delfonics and The Supremes, and reggae artists her family listened to, like Alton Ellis and Phyllis Dillo. On her self-titled debut EP, she infuses these influences through a mix of analog and digital recording techniques. “‘On My Way' is about making my way through life while sharing it with another person," she told Beats Per Minute. "About how grounding and scary it can be to share a life with someone, while both working to fulfill life's passions and dreams. Living in NYC always feels like a journey just getting from one place to another and life can feel just the same.” "I recorded several versions of this song, with earlier versions at a slower tempo. Then one day I had an idea to try recording it one more time from scratch a little faster, after continually feeling like it needed something more/dragged a bit and it ended up fitting a lot better so we followed through with that final arrangement. With the tempo change of the final version, I wanted to also texturally mirror the message of traveling and working towards a destination with low and high moments." Big up!! Escuchar audio

In the late 1950s, Patricia Chin – aka Miss Pat – abandoned a career in nursing and, with her husband Vincent, started selling old jukebox records out of a grocery store. Their business moved to downtown Kingston and would grow into Randy's Record Mart, Jamaica's most famous record store. Upstairs, Vincent set up Studio 17 and worked with some of reggae's biggest stars – Bob Marley and the Wailers, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Alton Ellis and John Holt. But political instability in the 1970s would force them to flee their beloved home. Miss Pat, with just a few dollars, had to rebuild her life and her business. Now, her family runs VP Records, one of the world's largest reggae and dancehall labels. Her book is called Miss Pat: My Reggae Journey. As broadcast June 11, 2021 with bonus mega miles on the tunes for you podcast listeners. We welcome veteran singer-songwriter Kevin Mark Trail to the show tonight to open up about his younger days and influences, the difficulty of being oneself growing up in England, and his recent works with Sola Rosa along with his new album Heart Strings, which dropped last month. Just an incredibly perceptive guy to talk to about music and the movements that have gone on all around culturally, and it was an honor to get a chance to speak with him about his music and influences on the show.
