POPULARITY
Asher White is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, visual artist, and writer whose prolific creative practice began in her early teens. She started releasing music on Bandcamp at 14, and by her mid-20s, had self-released more than a dozen albums. Her pop vision marries disparate sounds—skittering noise with swooping strings, lively banjo with blasts of feedback—across genres including drone, folk, Tropicalia, noise rock, and chamber pop. Deeply informed by her trans identity, and Jewish spirituality, White's work is both intimate and expansive. White's 2024 album “Home Constellation Study” was praised by Pitchfork for its “imagination, complexity, and feeling.” Her sixteenth LP “8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living“ was released in 2025 by the Indianapolis label Joyful Noise Recordings. White will perform at State Street Pub on October 1.

Let's celebrate, “Hi, How Are You Day”, an annual event honoring the late singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston. Joyful Noise Recordings will be hosting a special “Hi, How Are You Day” event in Indianapolis on January 24, featuring an exhibition of Daniel Johnston's visual artwork. The exhibit was curated by Johnston's friend and former road manager Don Goede.
Let's celebrate, “Hi, How Are You Day”, an annual event honoring the late singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston. The Indianapolis-based label Joyful Noise Recordings will be hosting a special “Hi, How Are You Day” event on January 24, featuring an exhibition of Daniel Johnston's visual artwork. The exhibit was curated by Johnston's friend and former road manager Don Goede. Listen to interviews with Goede, and Joyful Noise Recordings' founder Karl Hofstetter, as they discuss the significance of Johnston's music. Daniel Johnston was born in Sacramento, California in 1961 and he grew up in West Virginia. As a teenager, Johnston began obsessively creating music and art, often recording his songs on cheap consumer tape recorders. Throughout his life, Johnston faced serious mental health issues, struggling with schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder. In his music, Johnston wrote about his life and troubles with disarming honesty. While living in Austin, Texas in the mid 1980s, Johnston began distributing his homemade tapes by hand, passing cassettes out to friends and strangers. By the late 1980s, Johnston's tapes had fallen into the hands of high-profile indie rock musicians, including members of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr., who championed his music. In 1992, Johnston's name was thrust into popular culture, when Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain appeared on MTV wearing a Daniel Johnston t-shirt. Johnston died in 2019 at the age of 58, but his legacy remains stronger than ever. Johnston's music has expanded beyond the world of underground rock, with artists including Lana Del Rey, Beck and Tom Waits performing his songs.
Karl Hofstetter grew up hating Christmas music. But through his label Joyful Noise Recordings, he's produced a fascinating archive of experimental holiday music. Listen to selections featuring Jad Fair, Deerhoof, Sound of Ceres, Dale Crover (Melvins), Kishi Bashi, Danielson, Sedcairn Archives, WHY?, David Yow (Jesus Lizard) Thor Harris, and more.

It's always fun to interview two songwriters who have a history together! Before his solo career, Kishi Bashi was a member of Kevin Barnes' band of Montreal. Kishi Bashi's new album Kantos is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings, and of Montreal's Lady on the Cusp is out on Polyvinyl Records. Kishi Bashi's “Omoiyari: A Song Film” has been nominated for an Emmy with the winners announced in September.
Kishi Bashi is a singer, songwriter, film maker and multi-instrumentalist currently based in Santa Cruz, California. His latest full-length Kantos (out now via Joyful Noise Recordings) is multi-genre exercise in duality: a fun, party album that address's the current humanist role in art, life, and culture, all inspired by a mix of the sci-fi novel's series Hyperion Cantos and philosopher Immanuel Kant. Kishi shares the initial motivation behind making a “party' record and why a significant life change facilitated the work. Joe and Kishi question that role of fast-moving technology in music making, the hopeful notion that humanness will ground us despite tech advances and whether tech will outpace creativity. Kishi hints at a new film project and we hear a few tunes. Kishi Bashi Joyful Noise Episode supported by Izotope Episode supported by Distrokid
Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week on the pod we're joined by Lou Barlow. We talked about the 1980 Rough Trade compilation, "Wanna Buy a Bridge?" We honestly chat mostly about the comp and its influence on Barlow's taste early on and throughout his time in Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh and Folk Implosion. And -- If you weren't aware Folk Implosion is back together and they just released their first new album since 1999, twenty five years ago. Well 20 years ago if you count The New Folk Implosion, without John Davis, his writing partner on the project. The new album, "Walk Thru Me," is out now on Joyful Noise Recordings. Pick that up direct from the band or wherever you stream music. https://thefolkimplosion.bandcamp.com/ Lou also does a podcast with his wife, Adelle Barlow, called Raw Impressions, so check that out too. https://open.spotify.com/show/5H0j91I0qabIiBqv9nX0yy?si=11dba4166ff44cd6 Subscribe to our Patreon here: www.patreon.com/spinningoutpod Follow us on social media -- twitter and instagram (@Spinningoutpod)
The band Danielson started when Daniel Smith worked with his siblings to satisfy a requirement for his senior thesis three decades ago. If you're not familiar with their music, one thing you'll notice throughout today's show is that nobody else sounds anything like them. Daniel and I are talking today about the thirty-year evolution of the group, why he sings the way he does, how the group incorporates visual art into their work, producing records for others (including friends of the show Soul-Junk and Hermit Thrushes), creating the soundtrack to the film Electric Jesus, a new album in the works via Joyful Noise Recordings, collaborations with Sufjan Stevens, Half-Handed Cloud, Kramer, Jad Fair and so many others. Since recording this interview, Danielson has released a short film for their song “Come and Save Me” directed by Chris White that stars Fred Armisen and features previously unused lyrics by the late Larry Norman. Daniel spoke to me from his studio in New Jersey. Tall Tall Trees is the musical id of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Savino, a pioneer in the realm of experimental, DIY banjo music. Accompanied by his trusty Banjotron 6500, a highly customized, electrified banjo and effects pedal setup, Savino has wowed audiences since the 2009 debut of his self-titled album with his eclectic and innovative blend of psychedelic folk, rock and world music. His work seems to actively evade comfortable definition, upon first listen one will recognize the tenderness of Cat Stevens, the melancholy introspection of Elliott Smith, the anthemic psychedelia of Pink Floyd, and a deep abiding respect for Earl Scruggs. Savino often performs solo, showcasing his fleet-footed loop pedal mastery, as well as alongside long-time collaborator and fellow innovator, Kishi Bashi. He has recently collaborated with fellow psych-banjo maestro JD Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers, releasing Ponder Machine, a psychedelic banjo opus on the Shimmy Disc label. Tall Tall Trees latest release and 5th LP, Stick to the Mystical I, featuring a collaboration with Josiah Wolf of the band Why? is out September 8th, 2023 on Joyful Noise Recordings.SITEHOLOCENE Magazine + StoreTall Tall Trees IGRob Auchincloss IGSHOW NOTES Hosted on Acast. On the show this time, it's the experimental-noise meets classic-rock-that-really-rocks, of the legendary Deerhoof. Deerhoof has existed in its current incarnation since 2008, a four piece with Greg Saunier on drums, Satomi Matsuzaki on most vocals and bass, John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez on guitars. Every member can and does sing, and also write. The original version of the band started in 1994 in San Francisco! They are beloved by fans and fellow musicians alike. They are a prototypical DIY band. They are original, playful, thoughtful, and political. They should be in the dictionary under the word “band.” Their latest album “Miracle-Level” is available on Joyful Noise Recordings. If you've been wondering what it might sound like when two alt-banjo giants join hands & strings and sell their souls at the crossroads, Ponder Machine is an essential listening experience. In August of 2022, Kramer parachuted into Asheville, North Carolina to record a mysterious LP of collaborative banjo studies by JD Pinkus & Tall Tall Trees. Pinkus is best known as the bassist who replaced Kramer following his exit from the Butthole Surfers (and his years with The Melvins), and Joyful Noise Recordings artist Tall Tall Trees (aka Mike Savino) is a stunningly talented multi-instrumentalist, known for his work with Kishi Bashi, along with his pioneering excursions into the world of his Banjotron 5000.Within hours of Kramer's arrival, things got entirely out of hand (in exactly the manner he had hoped), and the results are sure to rewrite the way people see, hear and THINK about the banjo. Ponder Machine proves in a thousand ways that the possibilities are limitless, and the extra 30 minutes of music you get when you buy the Cassette version (or download the digital-only tracks) just hammers the point home. There is method to their madness. Listen closely and you will hear it.Think John Cage meets Bela Fleck meets Brian Eno. The banjo has never been chewed up and spit out so lovingly. JD Pinkus brought his mushrooms and effects pedals. Mike Savino brought his sourdough and his psychedelic street-smarts. Sweet dreams, y'all. Thanks for listening!!! On today's episode, I talk to musician Satomi Matsuzaki. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Satomi moved to San Francisco in 1995 to study film production, but within a week of immigrating, she joined the nascent rock group Deerhoof, and has been a member ever since. In the intervening years, the band has released over two dozen albums, EPs and live albums on labels like Kill Rock Stars and Polyvinyl, among many others, and their latest, Miracle-Level, was released at the end of March on Joyful Noise Recordings, and like everything they do, it's great! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. And the comedy podcast I do with my wife Naomi Couples Therapy can be found here!
Ed Rodriquez and John Dieterich are the guitarists for Deerhoof. Though they branch out with other projects, they have both been dedicated to the band for over 20 years and are celebrating the bands 19th album Miracle-Level (out March 31st on Joyful Noise Recordings). As standard with Deerhoof, the new record shimmers with newness and is full of sonic and lyrical surprises, but what stands out most is that this is the first "studio record" they've recorded in their long career. In this episode John and Ed share the recording experience and the motivation behind it. We also learn how John and Ed's artistic and personal relationship formed, how music brought them together and why this bond is so important them. John Joe and Ed discuss the path of their early influences and how they rear their head in the music and life. John tells us about Pond Hockey and we hear a couple tunes from the new record. https://deerhoof.website/ https://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/album/miracle-level https://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/collections/deerhoof

A menudo tenemos ideas y perseguimos ideas. Simplemente tenemos mucha fe en el proceso de avanzar con cierta ceguera y tratar de permanecer abiertos a cualquier caos que nos dirija. Creo que es divertido e increíble que parece haber resultado en un montón de música accesible, que suena como si estuvieras en un espectáculo de rock”. En la parte final del programa, viajamos al pasado en el copioso catálogo de la agrupación, para escucharlos con música del álbum “Secret Wars” de 2004.

Because I don't half love you lot, here's a bonus episode of this here podcast – an interview with Lou Barlow, of Dinosaur Jr, Sebadoh, Folk Implosion, one of my absolute favourite musicians of all time – that I did sometime in 2021. I actually spoke to him for a segment of episode 3 of The Spoook Podcast, which is another podcast I did/do/dunno yet, watch this space, but I just thought it made sense to republish it here. It's a good conversation once I penetrated the awkward veneer of a man whose written so many of my favourite songs. Speaking of which, if you haven't already, do check out Lou's most recent solo record, Reason to Live on Joyful Noise Recordings. It's got some of his very best songs to date on there. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Spoook is also a record label, a promoter, a shop, a Substack - it's many things. Whereas part one of this interview with Deerhoof touched on lighthearted subjects like stadium rock and DIY touring stories, part two delves into somewhat metaphysical territory... Today on the JN Radio hour, we will dive into one of the single most important bands making music today: Deerhoof. This interview occurred during the first time all four band members of Deerhoof were in the same room nearly 2 years. They had just finished filming their new live-stream (their first ever in the band's history - premiering on Bandcamp Dec 12 2021). This is not a typical "live stream", but also a mini-documentary of sorts in which the band documents their experience of traveling and meeting up for the first time in ages, and performs many of their new songs live for the first time ever. During the interview we discuss everything from practical DIY touring tips, the difference between stadium and arena rock, their experience touring with enormous bands like Radiohead and RHCP while traveling in a Prius or minivan, and what it's like to start playing again after 2 years of isolation.
