Sima Cunningham has had two albums released this year: Not God from Finom, her band with fellow Chicago singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Macie Stewart; and a long-gestating solo project, High Roller. With Finom kicking off a tour this weekend and a solo album launch and a Roches-themed show coming up, Cunningham is enjoying the culmination of a lifetime of music-making and collaboration. Here she recalls growing up in a musical and artistic household; tells of her sibling-like connection with Stewart and how they find their beautiful, surprising, distinct harmonies; recounts their history with Jeff Tweedy, who produced Not God, and her work with Chance the Rapper, Richard Thompson and Waxahatchee; emphasizes the importance of community; and explains as best as she can why the band had to change its name from Ohmme. Plus, she sings snippets of songs she wrote when she was 11. (Photo by Shannon Marks.)

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of fantastic songwriters in a sweet conversation about craft and life in general: Sima Cunningham and Roberto Lange. Lange has been making fascinating, lovely music under the name Helado Negro since 2009, mixing breezy indie-rock with electronic sounds, frequently with more than a passing nod to his Ecuadorian roots. His sonic world is always inviting, even as it's sort of otherworldly, and he often matches those sounds with cool visuals—which is no wonder considering his background in computer art. Earlier this year, Lange released the eighth Helado Negro album; it's called Phasor, and it's among his best, mixing tranquil sounds with his searching spirit. You might be lulled and puzzled at the same time, which is a great feeling. Check out the song “Colores del Mar” right here. The other half of today's conversation, Sima Cunningham, is best known as half the core of Chicago band Finom, originally known as OHMME. Finom released its Not God earlier this year, and it's full of unexpected pop turns tied together by the harmony between Cunningham and her longtime musical partner Macie Stewart. But the occasion for today's conversation is actually Cunningham's second solo album, just out on Ruination Records. It's called High Roller, and it explores a more personal side to her songwriter. For example, there's a great song written for Cunningham's brother Liam Kazar, himself a musician and one-time Talkhouse Podcast guest as well. Check out “For Liam” right here. In addition to that song, which Lange points out as a favorite on High Roller, these two chat about Cunningham's adventures in Ireland, what it's like to create an on-stage persona and interact with your audience, and how Cunningham's new album was a 10-year journey that was worth the wait. Enjoy. 0:00 – Intro 2:40 – Start of the chat 5:56 – Sima's mom is the most punk-rock person in their musical family 14:58 – Roberto on getting to a certain age in music 15:39 – Finding new ways to have a love affair with your audience 22:39 – Sima on figuring out how to be honest and vulnerable with her solo material 29:59 – Sima on playing new Finom songs and trying to figure out where to play solo Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sima Cunningham and Roberto Lange for chatting. We're revisiting some of our favorite music interviews from 2022. Today, we're featuring the art rock duo FINOM, formerly known as OHMME. The band is made up of Macie Stewart and Sima Cunningham, who are veterans in Chicago's DIY music scene. They test the boundaries of their voices and their instruments to create a strange — yet spellbinding — sound. Reset sat down with FINOM to talk about the name change and break down some of their music.

Get ready to shred! Joy and cohost Buddy are building the most epic guitarchestra (aka guitar orchestra) in this week's episode — so they're auditioning some of history's most notable guitar players. Jazz innovator Charlie Christian shows off his strumming solos, which made scores of people want to buy electric guitars. Les Paul not only plays the electric guitar, he updates the look and sound, paving the way for rock and roll. And musician Sima Cunningham from the band Ohmme stops by to show off the special pedals she uses to push the boundaries of what a guitar even sounds like. Of course, the biggest question is: will Joy's air guitar chops earn her a seat in the guitarchestra? All shredding aside, see if you can put this First Things First in the correct order: record players, headphones and pianos. Also, why do movie trailers come at the beginning of movies? Didja Know makes sense of it all! This episode was sponsored by: Fabric Insurance (Meetfabric.com/forever - Apply today in just 10 minutes at meet fabric dot com slash forever.

HELLLOOOOOO! And welcome in to the feast for the ears that is Episode 17 of Adventures In New Music! Kick back, relax, and settle down with your old muckers Chris and Andy and let them guide you through the world of new music! In Episode 17 we chat about:Jump Rope Gazers by The Beths (Chris's choice)The Beths are a four piece pop rock band from Auckland, NZ and Jump Rope Gazers is The Beths second album. The band met studying jazz music at university, but don't let that put you off them. EHH! JOKES AND MUSIC!! Chris picked this album after getting excited about album opener I'm Not Getting Excited and was interested to see what clever musical trickery lies beneath this seemly straight forward pop rock head nodder. Fantasize Your Ghost by Ohmme (Andy's choice)And for our second album we have another album with an opening track in 7! Ohmme are multi-instrumentalist duo Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, both classically trained pianists and regular accompanists in Chicago where they are based. Starting out in 2014, this is the bands second long player. Good Morning, Afternoon, Evening and welcome to Episode 16 of Adventures In New Music! Chris and Andy are back again to guide you through this weeks albums in their very own 'expert' way! After last weeks black metal fest we are back on more easy listening terrain this week!In Episode 16 we chat about:Our Two Skins by Gordi (Andy's choice)Andy picked this album after hearing the track Aeroplane Bathroom from this album. Gordi is the stage name of Sophie Payten, an Australian artist who is currently based in Sydney. As with her 2017 debut recording, Reservoir, this album was released on Jagjaguwar records, the home to acts such as Bon Iver, Angel Olsen and Sharron Van Etten. Described as Folktronica this album is a wonderfully personal affair inspired by and written during a fairly tumultuous period in Paytern's life. This is a real grower of an album and a mixed bag of genres which will reward you the more you listen to it. Life Drawing by Mr Ben & The Bens (Chris's choice)Self titled band leader Ben Hall begin this project back in 2012 in a barn in Lancaster in the North West of England. From there he's really put the time in and has self released seven albums as Mr Ben. Stylistically it's twee quirky indie pop (in a good way) along the lines of Belle and Sebastian, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci or The Shins. A “cloudy thread of narrative” is present throughout the album which Hall says is left open for listeners to map routes through it.Don't forget to check out our playlist to see which Gordi and Mr B&TB's tunes we've popped on there. Playlist available on the website or search Adventures In New Music on Spotify or Apple Music. Links to this weeks artists:Aeroplane Bathroom - Gordi (official video)Gordi (live) Digital Season at Sydney Opera HouseThe Wolves - Bon Iver (live at Glastonbury 2009)Danny - Mr Ben & The BensAny other business:Summer is well and truely gone and Autumn in upon us. Do you have any autumn albums? Andy's shout is Plans by Death Cab For Cutie. Get in touch and let us know your suggestions!Elton John's favourite band The Lemon Twigs are back with album number three 'Songs For The General Public'. 70/80's glam rock vibe, we love it.The National's Bryan Devendorf releases new album under the name Royal Green. Pop on a sweatband, listen to the album but don't offer him a hug. Andy's been digging the new Ruston Kelly offering, 'Shape & Destroy'.Oh, and do get it touch with us via the website or at adventuresinnewmusic@gmail.com and friend us up on the socials:InstagramFacebookAnd hit that subscribe button so we pop in your podcast inbox every Friday at 9am.Next Week...Next weeks featured albums are I'm Not Getting Excited by The Beths and Fantasize Your Ghost by Ohmme so get hold of those from wherever you get your musical needs and join us next week for another adventure. That was Episode 16, and it was Graham. This week I talk to Sarah Kucera, author of The Ayurvedic Self-Care Handbook: Holistic Healing Rituals for Every Day and Season, all about her book and what Ayurveda can teach us about taking care of ourselves. If you’ve followed this podcast for a while, you know that I think self-care is vitally important in order to live a happy, healthy life. (I even created an online course about self care!) You might also know that I dabble in Ayurveda, and I’m fascinated about what little nuggets of wisdom I can learn from yoga’s “sister science.” So, I was thrilled when I came across a new book that talks about Ayurveda from a lens of self care. We discuss:* How Sarah’s struggles with feeling low-energy and stressed led her to look for solutions from Ayurveda and write her book* The Ayurvedic clock--and why your bedtime and waking time is as important as the number of hours you sleep* Why self care can be accessible to all (even those who are short on time and/or money). She explains why it doesn’t have to be “all or nothing.”* Sarah's "pranic budget," and how can you use this concept to use your energy more wisely, be more efficient, and have more time to do the things you love Show notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode155SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORSOhmme is a company that makes yoga and activewear clothing for men. Bernie Clark on the Benefits of Yin Yoga

The thoughtful and articulate Bernie Clark joins us on the show this week! Bernie is perhaps best known for his influential Yin yoga teachings as well as his books, The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga, and Your Body, Your Yoga. When Jason and I shared our thoughts about Yin Yoga at the end of season 1 (episode 147), we hadn't expected it to be so polarizing. After seeing Bernie's response to the episode in one of his forums and after listening to you, our listeners, we asked him on the show.We covered a lot of ground in this episode: Bernie clarified Yin's origin story, he shared how Yin benefits him personally (and how he complements it with strength-training), as well as how he guides (even flexible students like Andrea) to discern their edge in poses. The big takeaway from the conversation? We landed on more points of agreement than points of difference. The one point of difference that remains is whether or not lengthening ligaments is a good idea. And if you'd like to research that further, check out the show notes.SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORSOhmme is a company that makes yoga and activewear clothing for men. The fit and function is phenomenal. This week, I talk to Bay Area yoga teacher Quamay Sams. Quamay grew up in New York, where he was a dancer before he enrolled in a yoga teacher training program (without ever having set foot in a yoga studio). He now considers teaching yoga a calling -- and a big responsibility. We talk about:* Why Quamay felt like a misfit (his word) growing up and how that impacted the course of his life.* Dance. He tells us more about a style of dancing called krumping, why he loves it, and how it became an outlet for him.* Stepping into the seat of the teacher and how he is coping with and embracing being a role model.* Yoga and representation. His take on why there aren’t more black people in yoga studios, who’s responsible for that, and how we can all work together to bridge that gap.* His experience as one of Jason's advanced teacher training students.Show notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode153SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORS1. And same goes with Brogan, or Brody, or whatever that clown's name is and most other things we certainly wouldn't even know at all if not for Hard Knocks. You couldn't catch a cold butter ass'd naked in molasses... Mike's preseason Cleveland Indians predictions are looking pretty accurate. Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Accident Prone” (begins at the 1:24:00 mark) Reviewing Cleveland's inaugural InCuya Festival even though we didn't go to it. Having fun with Minor League Baseball team promotions, Part 5 (the final chapter for 2018): Can we interest you in a hot wiener with special spicy meat sauce, or how about we just set this wiener dog on fire? Just when you thought mascots were nothing but fan hobos in full costume and scary enough, now we find out they're organizing! Urban Meyer. His name alone at this point should cause decent people to cringe, let alone how it should make Ohio State Buckeye fans feel. Trevor Bauer's bizarre treatment story turned out to be a bad Twitter joke gone awry, but wait until you learn who actually faced the most legal jeopardy in this saga. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred is choosing to only tell you the part of the story that makes him look accurate when he says there's no significant correlation between winning teams and big payrolls, and of course that bold statement couldn't be more untruthful and inaccurate. It may be time to remove Cody Allen from being Cleveland's closer, however, there's more to letting him continue on than most are considering, and the reasoning goes far beyond just that of Francona being loyal to his vets. Singer Jamila Woods and Ohmme's Macie Stewart and Sima Cunningham are ubiquitous collaborators working at the heart of Chicago's diverse and vibrant music scene. Between them they've worked with Wilco, Chance the Rapper, Twin Peaks, Vic Mensa and many more, and also release their own fantastic records. On the latest episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, the old friends catch up backstage at Pitchfork Music Festival 2017. Their wonderfully Chicago-centric talk takes in the city's vital musical infrastructure, free jazz, the Brown Girls web series, and how amazing sci-fi author Octavia Butler is. Oh, and Talkhouse Music Editor-in-Chief Amy Rose Spiegel gets me to revisit my pre-adolescent singing voice. Check it out, and subscribe now on iTunes or Stitcher to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. Today’s episode is sponsored in part by Shure. Big thanks to Pitchfork for hosting Talkhouse at the festival. — Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer @eliaeinhorn This episode was recorded, mixed and co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi.
