The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Across Big Big Train's shifting line-ups, Greg Spawton's songs connect the earliest records to their latest album, Woodcut. Greg selects eight tracks from Big Big Train’s catalogue that help tell their story; songs about Winchester Cathedral’s medieval foundations, record-breaking steam locomotives, and stories plucked from newspaper headlines, transforming historical curiosities into explorations of human endeavour. In this episode of the Now Spinning Magazine Podcast, I am joined by Gregory Spawton of Big Big Train for an in-depth interview about the band's new album Woodcut. We explore how an accidental visit to a woodcut exhibition sparked the band's first full-length concept album, the creative shift that came with Alberto Bravin producing, the expanding role of Clare Lindley, and why Big Big Train insist on recording together in the same room. From philosophy and storytelling to guitar solos, restraint, and the power of active listening, this is a deep dive into one of the most thoughtful and rewarding progressive rock albums of recent years.Become a Patron (free trial -cancel anytime)https://www.patreon.com/nowspinningNow Spinning Magazine Storehttps://burningshed.com/store/now-spinning-magazineVisit the Now Spinning Magazine Merch Shophttps://nowspinningmagazine.co.uk/

My guest for this episode is Big Big Train vocalist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Alberto Bravin. Arriving from legendary Italian prog band PFM a couple of years back, Bravin discusses the band's new album (his second with Big Big Train), Woodcut. It's the 16th studio album for BBT but the band's first concept album. Alberto sat for the interview in early December 2025, but the album drops Friday, Feb. 6 from Inside Out Music. It was my honor recently to speak with music writer Andrew Wild, who has written books about the likes of Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits, and Pink Floyd, as well as about the iconic Live Aid concert festival. Andrew just released his second book about the 1980s "neoprog" era in England, chronicling six British bands that kept the progressive rock torch alive when the 1970s bands were either fading out or pivoting to more pop-oriented sounds. Those bands are: Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Pendragon, Twelfth Night, and Solstice. The book, A Playground of Broken Hearts: the Progressive Rock Revival 1984 to 1989, is a sequel to his A Mirror of Dreams: the Progressive Rock Revival 1981 to 1983. Andrew spoke to me about his music history, how he came to write about these six bands, how those groups kept the prog scene alive, and much more (including his upcoming book about Big Big Train!). Greetings, everyone! Welcome to Episode 11 of the podcast, where I'm joined by my bandmate in Big Big Train, Clare Lindley. Clare is not only my first female guest but also an incredibly talented musician with a wealth of experience. It's truly inspiring to hear her perspective on what it takes to make music your life. Her dedication, hard work, and passion are undeniable, and I've had the privilege of witnessing her professionalism and skill on stage time and time again. In this episode, we dive into Clare's journey — starting in Scotland, where she grew up and made a name for herself, before moving to London to take on the city's music scene head-on. Clare is also an educator, sharing her love of music with students of all ages, and—on top of that—she's a professional rock climber! Her passion and drive are contagious, and I'm lucky to be in a band with someone so talented. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Cheers! #nickdvirgilio #clarelindley #bigbigtrain #soyouwanttobeamusician #violin #fiddle #musiclife
