Makers, Not Fakers: Phil Brandon on Craft Distilling in Little Rock, Arkansas In this episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I am thrilled to welcome Phil Brandon, the founder and distiller of Rock Town Distillery in Little Rock, Arkansas. As the first legal distillery in the state since before Prohibition, Rock Town emphasizes the importance of local sourcing and building a distillery that reflects the character of Arkansas, despite the challenges of being a pioneer in a state not traditionally known for distilling. We delve into the craft distilling renaissance and how the landscape has evolved since Rock Town's founding in 2010. Phil discusses the significance of their unofficial motto, "We're makers, not fakers," and the commitment to quality and authenticity that drives their production. He also highlights the historical context of distilling in Arkansas, the challenges of sourcing local ingredients, and the meticulous care that goes into their distillation process, including proofing and filtration techniques. Finally, we explore Rock Town's future, including a collaboration with Bardstown Bourbon Company which began during the pandemic and has allowed Phil and the team to expand production while maintaining the integrity of the brand. He candidly addresses the differences in flavor profiles between the distillate produced in Little Rock and that made at Bardstown, emphasizing the creation of a separate product line to distinguish these offerings. This episode is a deep dive into the world of craft distilling, showcasing the Rock Town team's passion and commitment to quality in every bottle. This week on The Whiskey Trip Podcast, Big Chief chats with Phil Brandon, Founder and Head Distiller, of Rock Town Distillery . This craft distillery located in the heart of downtown Little Rock, Arkansas produces some great whiskey that has never been done before. Phil takes the Big Man on a journey through his distilling story while also introducing him to unique mash bills that make this distillery stand out. Brandon's whiskey trip has taken him from the big hardwoods of Arkansas so that he understands where his barrels will come from in the future, to the farms of Arkansas, so he knows the hard work of the farmers who grow his grains. In the first half Big Chief and Brandon start with the Arkansas Bourbon which has a mash bill of 82% corn, 9% wheat, 9% malted barley - right up the big man's palate. The second expression they taste is an Arkansas Rice Bbourbon. Arkansas is the number one state for rice production. The rice gives it an extra sweetness. The last expression of the first half is an Arkansas Single Malt. In the second half Phil introduces Mike to their Rock Town Column Still Collection. This collaboration with Bardstown Bourbon Company will help the company expand their reach across America. They sip on the small batch and then a toasted French Oak expression – a toasted, wheated bourbon to be exact! This ride on The Whiskey Trip highlights David Pickerel's legacy of craft distilleries he helped create across the American landscape. Cheers!

Phil Brandon stopped by the Heaping Spoonful studio to tell the somewhat far-fetched story of how an electrical engineer by trade ends up establishing the first legal distillery in Arkansas since Prohibition and the incredible boost to his business winning high-profile awards for Rock Town's bourbons has provided.
John and John jump back into the fires of Smoky whiskeys. John pours the Ron Swanson favorite, Laugavulin 16, a single malt scotch from Islay. He pairs Gjetost (Norwegian cooked goat cheese), peanut butter, KC style barbecue ribs, and a chocolate brownie cake. Josh stays closer to home with a locally produced whiskey, the Hickory Smoked Whiskey from Rock Town Distillery. The plate this week is a sweet, salty, and funky plate with fresh peaches, bacon, and Humboldt Fog cheese respectively. They, well John especially, have a great time with these liquors.
We went on location for this episode and visited with Phil Brandon at Rock Town Distillery. Phil is the owner and master distiller at Rock Town so he educated us on the various types of whiskey that he makes, his process, and all the products that he has developed. We got to taste the new Triple Sec and Ginger Beer Liqueur, as well as have some of the delicious cocktails they serve at the bar. Cheers! Listen wherever you like to listen to podcasts. What is love? Or better yet, what does being in love mean? In this week's episode, Seth and Crystal are on the road again and were able to visit the Rock Town Distillery and grab a bottle to sip on for the show and discuss what they believe the meaning is of being "in love". They had a listener reach out and ask about falling in and out of love with your partner, and thought what a great topic to discuss! Usually at the end of a relationship, people tend to tell their partner the age old saying, "I love you, but I'm not in love with you." Tune in and listen to them dissect this very statement and tell you their definition of love. Hope you enjoy, cheers!

Local breweries, local festivals. This week we kept it all in Arkansas, looking to Rock Town Distillery of Little Rock for the liquor to our lit. After hitting up the Author, Author! event of the annual Arkansas Literary Festival, held every April by the Arkansas Central Library, the L&L crew each chose a book by one of the attending authors, ranging from gothic paranormal to historical romance to nonfiction history. While not all the books were to our liking, the Rock Town bourbon and moonshine in our Ginger Snap and Lemonade Mint Julep gathered a five shot rating all around, and a Strawberry Gin Fizz made the perfect dessert drink to shut down this episode. Check out all our drink recipes on our Pinterest page, Lit & Liquor, and visit our Facebook, Instagram, or website for pictures of our drinks and books. Next week join us as we each pick two books that we feel are over— and underrated and discuss why all the hype!
It's Father's Day weekend, and we have two stories to share on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. Euan Henderson didn't want to work in the whisky business when he left school, but when your father is veteran distillery manager Iain Henderson, it's hard not to wind up in the family business. Euan's now a team leader at Aberlour, Glenallachie, and Tormore distilleries...and he'll share his story - and his dream to ultimately follow in his father's footsteps - with us. We'll also talk with Phil Brandon, who's beaming like a proud papa this weekend as his Rock Town Distillery in Little Rock, Arkansas celebrates its fifth anniversary. Like any toddler, Rock Town's had some growing pains, too...and Phil discusses them all with us. In the news, Nikka makes the tough decision to replace its entire single malt range with no-age-statement versions because of inventory shortages, a billionaire gets into the whisky business with a new Baltimore distillery, and Heaven Hill is bringing back a revered name in rye whiskies.
Phil Brandon of Rock Town Distillery talks about winning the title of world's best bourbon and overcoming a rocky grand opening, and I try his bourbon and give him my take during the interview.
