Two favorite pastimes, whiskey and sports, come together for a unique event—the Whiskey Battle Edition. All while reminiscing about collegiate sports with former USC defensive lineman Bobby DeMars, now the founder of Blind Barrels. Join us as we embark on a spirited journey through whiskey and sports. The Blind Barrels Whiskey BattleThis special episode explores the world of whiskey through Blind Barrels. Blind Barrels curates a quarterly subscription service delivering blind taste-testing kits of curated craft American whiskies. Bobby DeMars unveils the concept behind further engaging whiskey enthusiasts with a unique competitive element—a Whiskey Battle. Participants are challenged to identify whiskey types, proofs, and ages, adding a gamified edge to the tasting experience. The LineupIn this episode, our hosts and guests venture into a blind tasting session comprising four select samples from the "Heat" lineup. Each pour showcases American craft whiskey distilleries, offering varying complexities and flavor profiles.Sample A: A surprise to many, this whiskey from Louisiana's JT Melon impressed with its caramel and spicy undertones, unveiling itself as a rice whiskey—a treat for the adventurous palate.Sample B: Bringing in flavors of banana and herbal tea, this whiskey tricked several into thinking it was a lighter drink, only to be revealed as a potent, high-proof example of bourbon from Ben Holladay.Sample C: A complex myriad of fruity and spicy aromas, the Rock Town whiskey excited the senses with its long finish and notes of cinnamon toast, solidifying its place as a standout craft selection.Sample D: The finale, hailed for its smooth leather and cigar box outlines, offered a sophisticated tasting experience, genuinely embodying the high-proof category with a surprising subtlety. The CompetitionThe gamified tasting spurred lively competition among podcast participants, testing their ability to discern specific whiskey characteristics based on their sensory observations. Despite the competitive spirit, fun and camaraderie underscored the experience. In the end, Ryan Kramer narrowly won the battle by a hair, showing a knack for hitting close to the mark with his guesses.Reflections and RevelationsAs the episode unfolded, the discussion expanded beyond the tasting notes. The guests spoke of their personal experiences with whiskey tasting. Bobby shared tales of college football and highlighted the significance of the craft whiskey scene. Blind Barrels emerged as an enriching curation of whiskey culture. Makers, Not Fakers: Phil Brandon on Craft Distilling in Little Rock, Arkansas In this episode of the Whiskey Ring Podcast, I am thrilled to welcome Phil Brandon, the founder and distiller of Rock Town Distillery in Little Rock, Arkansas. As the first legal distillery in the state since before Prohibition, Rock Town emphasizes the importance of local sourcing and building a distillery that reflects the character of Arkansas, despite the challenges of being a pioneer in a state not traditionally known for distilling. We delve into the craft distilling renaissance and how the landscape has evolved since Rock Town's founding in 2010. Phil discusses the significance of their unofficial motto, "We're makers, not fakers," and the commitment to quality and authenticity that drives their production. He also highlights the historical context of distilling in Arkansas, the challenges of sourcing local ingredients, and the meticulous care that goes into their distillation process, including proofing and filtration techniques. Finally, we explore Rock Town's future, including a collaboration with Bardstown Bourbon Company which began during the pandemic and has allowed Phil and the team to expand production while maintaining the integrity of the brand. He candidly addresses the differences in flavor profiles between the distillate produced in Little Rock and that made at Bardstown, emphasizing the creation of a separate product line to distinguish these offerings. This episode is a deep dive into the world of craft distilling, showcasing the Rock Town team's passion and commitment to quality in every bottle. Shining A Light On The Independent Spirit Lost Lantern - Adam, Nora, and their team - are bar none the best independent bottler of American whiskey working today. They have a serious claim to my favorite IB period. More than anything, you know that they've done the work and can talk about the barrels, brands, and distilleries they choose to work with, which for whiskey nerds like I (and probably you!) is just *chef's kiss*. Join me as I sit down with Nora and Adam from Lost Lantern Whiskey to uncover the magic behind their Summer of Bourbon 2 series. We'll explore the rich tapestry of nine distinct bourbon releases, each chosen from twelve distilleries across twelve states, including the rare gems from a ghost distillery in Mississippi. Discover what makes this year's collection a step up from last year's and hear about the serendipitous journey that led them to acquiring Rich Grain Distilling's bourbon stocks. Ever wondered how the Gulf Coast climate impacts the flavor profile of bourbon? Nora and Adam share their groundbreaking techniques and insights, such as rebarreling bourbon into larger used casks to create flavor complexity without the tannin overload (a major sticking point that I thank them for, profusely). We'll dive into the unique qualities of Gulf Coast bourbon and why it's exclusively available through Lost Lantern's Mississippi Memory series. Additionally, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how blending bourbons from diverse distilleries across America creates a balanced and intricate final product, guided by a blend captain who ensures each batch is perfect. Curious about the challenges faced by regional distilleries and the innovative approaches they use? We'll highlight distilleries like Rock Town in Arkansas, High Wire in South Carolina, and the nuances of the Lincoln County Process in Tennessee whiskey at Lieper's Fork. Listen as we compare the unique methods, ingredients, and local climates that shape these exceptional bourbons. Plus, get a behind-the-scenes look at how Lost Lantern selects and maintains high standards for their releases, ensuring that each bottle tells a story and captures the essence of its origins. Don't miss this journey through the evolving landscape of American bourbon. There's also a unique discount code, one use only without any product limits, just for listeners of the Whiskey Ring Podcast! Aired 5/21/2020 Today on Up In Your Business with Kerry McCoy, you'll hear from a young man who is leading a double life, Mr. Samuel Ellis. Mr. Ellis is an environmental scientist by day, a fiddler in a country band by night and has turned his passion for rivers into a business by founding Rock Town River Outfitters, in Little Rock's River Market District, on the Arkansas River. Rock Town River Outfitters rents bikes and kayaks for experiencing the Arkansas River from above on the 15-mile River Trail or afloat in the Arkansas River's current (it is not as dangerous as it sounds). Today we're going to dive (LOL, pun intended) into the risks and rewards of kayaking on the big river, talk about the downtown tours his company offers, get his take on the environmental impact we humans are having on mother earth and find out where his band The Cons of Formant play.

In this episode, host Nate Disarro speaks with Phil Brandon, Founder, CEO and Head Distiller at Rock Town Distillery. When faced with a layoff during his corporate IT career, Phil took his passion for whiskey and transformed it into an iconic Arkansas operation and the first to ever distill Bourbon in Arkansas. Using his background in engineering along with his MBA, Phil has put his entrepreneurial talents to the test by creating the Rock Town brand, distribution process, manufacturing standards, and a whole lot more. He has been creating handcrafted, award-winning spirits that you can find in restaurants, liquor stores and winning contests around the world!Support the show
Phil Brandon stopped by the Heaping Spoonful studio to tell the somewhat far-fetched story of how an electrical engineer by trade ends up establishing the first legal distillery in Arkansas since Prohibition and the incredible boost to his business winning high-profile awards for Rock Town's bourbons has provided.
Dan and Erik talk to Rock Island Hip Hop performer and artist Aubs.
We went on location for this episode and visited with Phil Brandon at Rock Town Distillery. Phil is the owner and master distiller at Rock Town so he educated us on the various types of whiskey that he makes, his process, and all the products that he has developed. We got to taste the new Triple Sec and Ginger Beer Liqueur, as well as have some of the delicious cocktails they serve at the bar. Cheers! Listen wherever you like to listen to podcasts. Ep 193 | Aired 5/21/2020 Today on Up In Your Business with Kerry McCoy, you’ll hear from a young man who is leading a double life, Mr. Samuel Ellis. Mr. Ellis is an environmental scientist by day, a fiddler in a country band by night and has turned his passion for rivers into a business by founding Rock Town River Outfitters, in Little Rock’s River Market District, on the Arkansas River. Rock Town River Outfitters rents bikes and kayaks for experiencing the Arkansas River from above on the 15-mile River Trail or afloat in the Arkansas River’s current (it is not as dangerous as it sounds). Today we’re going to dive (LOL, pun intended) into the risks and rewards of kayaking on the big river, talk about the downtown tours his company offers, get his take on the environmental impact we humans are having on mother earth and find out where his band The Cons of Formant play.
Eric and Megan Schraedley - husband and wife food-loving team - bring you their comedic foodie podcast. New foods (and drinks!) each episode, they taste blind, guessing what they've been given. Taste and/or laugh along with them. Eric Schraedley has 15 years' experience working in restaurants across the US; at home, he brews ales and cooks a mean sausage breakfast wrap. Megan Schraedley has a PhD in Organizational Communication and tackles food security and food policy issues. She's on a sourdough bread-baking kick and enjoys milking goats, picking black raspberries, and hunting morels in spring. In Episode 9, Vodka Part 1 - Megan and Eric take a trip to Maryland to visit the Schraedley family for Thanksgiving (2018). They share the "blinding" concept and talk the family into tasting vodkas. The 4 Vodkas we try: Svedka, Tito's, Grey Goose, and Rock Town. Participants: Megan & Eric Schraedley; Pam Schraedley (Eric's older sister); & John Desmond (Eric & Megan's brother-in-law). Silent observer: Sharon Schraedley (Eric's mom). Eric's sister, Rebecca Palmer, blinds the vodka cups for the tasters.

Rollerblading may be a visual sport, but there are wonderfully rich sounds generated while doing it, from the ting and hum of skates locking onto a rail to the thunderous applause when a trick is landed. That's what this episode is all about. Local breweries, local festivals. This week we kept it all in Arkansas, looking to Rock Town Distillery of Little Rock for the liquor to our lit. After hitting up the Author, Author! event of the annual Arkansas Literary Festival, held every April by the Arkansas Central Library, the L&L crew each chose a book by one of the attending authors, ranging from gothic paranormal to historical romance to nonfiction history. While not all the books were to our liking, the Rock Town bourbon and moonshine in our Ginger Snap and Lemonade Mint Julep gathered a five shot rating all around, and a Strawberry Gin Fizz made the perfect dessert drink to shut down this episode. Check out all our drink recipes on our Pinterest page, Lit & Liquor, and visit our Facebook, Instagram, or website for pictures of our drinks and books. Next week join us as we each pick two books that we feel are over— and underrated and discuss why all the hype!
Yay! It's episode 50, but it's not all celebration: the Rock Town Garage is closing down. Well, it's moving at least. Krans talks about losing his house, where he's going, podcasting, and, of course, season two of Daredevil.
Brandon Ford is a staple of the Boston blading scene. He stopped by the Rock Town garage while driving across the U.S. for his moving company. We talked about blading in the Olympics, the Jenner effect, neighborhood crime, the power of good weed, conspiracy theories regarding Middle Earth, the mindset of mass shooters, and dogs. I had a good time hanging out with Brandon, so I hope you enjoyed the podcast. Don't forget to subscribe on iTunes or Stitcher so you don't miss out on future episodes of the Rock Town Podcast.
It's Father's Day weekend, and we have two stories to share on this week's WhiskyCast In-Depth. Euan Henderson didn't want to work in the whisky business when he left school, but when your father is veteran distillery manager Iain Henderson, it's hard not to wind up in the family business. Euan's now a team leader at Aberlour, Glenallachie, and Tormore distilleries...and he'll share his story - and his dream to ultimately follow in his father's footsteps - with us. We'll also talk with Phil Brandon, who's beaming like a proud papa this weekend as his Rock Town Distillery in Little Rock, Arkansas celebrates its fifth anniversary. Like any toddler, Rock Town's had some growing pains, too...and Phil discusses them all with us. In the news, Nikka makes the tough decision to replace its entire single malt range with no-age-statement versions because of inventory shortages, a billionaire gets into the whisky business with a new Baltimore distillery, and Heaven Hill is bringing back a revered name in rye whiskies.
Skookum is an all-blader rock band from Oakland, comprised of Sean Salazar, Patrick Calilung, Brendan Tidd, and Brian Shima. Sean and Pat stopped by the Rock Town garage to talk about the meaning behind their name, picking a rock star death, and blading before playing. This podcast features music from their live set on May 27, 2015, at the Stork Club in Oakland, Calif. Check out Skookum on Bandcamp and follow them on Instagram. In this podcast, he talks about how his experiences working in retail and newspapers blend together to create what's been called a "masterfully developed plot with more unexpected twists than a Quentin Tarantino movie."
