Erika and Paul have covered a lot of films on this podcast…films they loved, films they hated, films upon which there will never be agreement betwixt them. However, every once in a while, a film comes along that they both are so unabashedly delighted by that they devolve into their base selves. The smoky summer of 2025 has produced a near record number of air quality alerts for Minnesota. Most of this summer smoke has drifted in from these massive Canadian wildfires where more than 16 million acres of forest has burned in Canada this year.MPR News chief meteorologist Paul Huttner talked with Matthew Taraldsen, a meteorologist with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), about poor air quality and reason behind the state's smoke-filled summers. The following has been lightly edited for clarity. Listen to the full conversation by clicking the player button above or subscribe to the Climate Cast podcast. First, some good news. The smoke has drifted away, and there's the possibility of rain in some Canadian wildfire zones. Can that possibly limit our smoke over the next week or two? Yes, it definitely can. The areas that have been on fire have also been extremely dry, and so it likely isn't enough to put out the fires, but it will definitely kind of dampen down the fire activity and limit the amount of smoke that the fires do emit. This has been quite a summer when it comes to air quality alerts. How close is the state to hitting record? We've had 19 alerts this year so far. Our current record is 53, so we're not quite to record, but we're above record pace. We're higher than we were at 2023 at this point in the season. No matter how you cut it, it's a very high-impact wildfire season. Most of our smoke this year is coming from Canada. That was also the case in 2023 when over 45 million acres burned in that country. What can we say about wildfire trends in the U.S. and Canada, and smoke in Minnesota, in the past few decades? The short answers is, it's definitely on the rise. There's been plenty of research out there in the western U.S. that the wildfire trends are growing as our climate warms. In Canada, the data until last year was a little bit more ambiguous. But there's definitely a signal that what we're seeing is likely being influenced with climate change.I think what what we're seeing this year is likely still going to be an outlier. But I do think going forward, we're likely to see at least some smoke impacts every year. We've also been having volatile, organic compounds inside the smoke that have also been serving as a pretty powerful base for ozone formation and seeing higher ozone days in ways we haven't seen before. It's kind of a one-two-punch. We hear a lot about climate change and wildfires versus forest management and fire suppression. How do you extinguish fire in 1.2 billion acres of boreal forest in remote areas with few roads? You don't, is the short answer. In Minnesota, we think of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area as being remote, and it is to an extent. But Canada takes it to a whole new level.Canada has remote areas the size of the state of Texas and when you get a fire that starts there, there is no easy way to put that fire out, unless you air drop in firefighters who will then hand dig fire lines. This year, you have fires that are burning roughly the size of the state of South Carolina — think of how long it would take to hand carve fire lines around an entire U.S. state. On the other side, when those people are out, far away from civilization, if something were to happen more locally, they're no longer on the field and you have to bring them back. So they're letting them burn just because they don't have the manpower to extinguish them all. It's a multifaceted problem, but I think people lose sight of just how incredibly large this area is with no roads, no water lines, nothing out there. Your tools to control those fires are very limited. I know you're in the air quality business and not in politics, but people are complaining about forest management, both the build up of fuels by suppressing fires and the let-it-burn approach. Now people are blaming Canada for not putting out fires. So what is it?The other point is that this is not just impacting the U.S. In Flin Flon, Manitoba, the air quality last month was over 500 for the entire month. So this is impacting people in Canada as much as it's impacting people the United States, and no one's happy with it. What's your overall message to Minnesotans about our summer air quality and climate change going forward? I think the big thing to take away is to be vigilant. We've heard from a lot of people that checking the air quality has really become of part of their daily routine — just like you would check the normal weather forecast. That's probably the most prudent thing. Check the air quality, have a plan to deal with smoke, wear a mask. It will protect you. Be prepared if you are outside in the smoke, and listen to your body.

Author and sports columnist Dave Zirin of The Nation joins us to delve into the Muhammad Ali psychedelia of A.K.A. CASSIUS CLAY (1970), possibly the trippiest sports documentary ever conceived. In this amazing conversation, Dave explains how Ali linked the civil rights movement to growing antiwar protests as well as giving us the lowdown on director Jimmy Jacobs and narrator Richard Kiley, a Broadway legend who looks like a handsy college professor here. Cory and Bob talk about the movie's funkified jazz score by Teo Macro, who scored this movie the same year he produced Miles Davis' fusion opus BITCHES BREW! And Dave sticks around long enough to tell us about the time that George Foreman (RIP) sang Bob Dylan to him. You'll never guess which song Big George sang, so you'll have to listen. Bob and Cory also talk a little bit about the new SUPERMAN movie and speculate if David Zaslav is the greatest studio chief of all time with Super and SINNERS coming out during his watch. We promised Dave Zirin talking Ali and Foreman back in PhilenApocalypse III and gave you THE BIRDS instead. And in THE BIRDS ep, we promised horse movies with Philena's partner Sage and you finally got Zirin and Ali. So the next episode will be Sage joining us for horse movies, but there's yet another programming change. Instead of Smoky and Francis the Talking Mule, you'll get HOT TO TROT (1988) with the great Bobcat Goldthwait plus Elizabeth Taylor in NATIONAL VELVET (1944), which Cory says is the least stony movie of all time but Bob promises is kinda pervy in a disturbing way, so there's that. Alyona Smoky - A Beautiful LiberationCW: War in UkraineAlyona Smoky was born and raised in Ukraine, where her mother joined a high-control, conservative evangelical church when Alyona was young. Netflix has a Hitchcock series going right now so--gasp--there are actually movies on the world's biggest streamer that are from before 1980! I know, it's hard to believe but because of The Master of Suspense there are even movies from the 1950s and 60s--and they're being promoted on Netflix's landing page like they're a big deal and everything. We couldn't and shouldn't pass this opportunity up, so Cory and Bob talk about Hitchcock's apocalyptic chiller THE BIRDS from 1963. Cory even gives this movie his stoney medal of approval as he talks about meeting the classic film's star Tippi Hedren in Bodega Bay, where the movie was filmed, and talking to her about her bizarre passion project ROAR (1981), a film she made where even more people were mauled by animals during the filming than they were during THE BIRDS. Life goals. We had a couple of guests fall through here, so this is a bit of an emergency episode, so just one movie this time, but as Bob says, "it is epic." Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss our next episode where Philena's partner Sage joins us to have Bob torture them with old HORSE MOVIES with Fred MacMurray in SMOKY (1946) and FRANCIS JOINS THE WACS (1954). This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit chadcrouch.substack.comMore than once in recent conversations I've revealed I'm not all that fond of Summer. The response has been interesting: incredulous laughter; a bemused disbelief. Why? Explain, they seemed to say.Maybe you recall the sleeper hit “Heatwaves” by Glass Animals that was ubiquitous in the Summer of 2022? There's a line that I always misheard: Heat waves been fakin' me outCan't make you happier now…Well, I always thought it was heat waves been freakin' me out, because that made perfect sense to me. The year before, in late June 2021, the US Pacific Northwest experienced a Heat Dome event that shattered all kinds of records. It reached 116 degrees Fahrenheit here in Portland, Oregon. It sparked wildfires, warped train tracks, and contributed to a heat-related death toll of over 1400 people in the greater geographic area including Canada. Over 70 heat-related deaths occurred in the county I live in.I rarely enjoy feeling hot. The smell of forest fires provokes an adrenaline flight response that requires distinctly modern reasoning to suppress. The cabin fever that settles in after multiple bad air days due to wildfire smoke produces a profound feeling of disassociation. Smoky skies were until recently thought to be a western US state phenomenon, but that seems to up for debate now.The anticipation of these sensations as markers of Summer, often arriving earlier in the season each year, just makes me wish I could skip to fall. These are a couple of the reasons I don't entirely look forward to summer.Nevertheless, apart from two days with temperatures in the 90's, it's been a mild and dry June here. Temperature-wise, it's felt more or less in line with an average end to spring in the Pacific Northwest, which is to say, lovely. Highs have hovered in the low 70's.Back in Forest park, baby bird voices can be heard seemingly around every other bend along the trails. Baby bird sounds are imbued with so much joy, new life, and vulnerability. You'll get better looks at the parents too, as they dart through the shrubs and understory defensively. American Robins can be seen hopping along the trail in front of you in an apparent defensive distraction behavior to protect a nearby nest. In this way, it is a season of being on guard for the birds too. The trills of Pacific Wrens overlap at intervals. Their effusive song is sweetened by the columnar structure of the conifer woodlands. I picture the frenetic notes of their song like pinballs bouncing off bumpers, scattering through the understory, arriving at my ears in a wash.At the 16-minute mark we hear a Stellar's Jay practicing its Red-tailed Hawk imitation. It must be a youngster because it calls again and again, not quite getting it right. Summer officially starts on June 21st, the day after this recording is released. All but the deepest creek canyons have already dried up in Forest Park. A wildfire 75 miles east of here destroyed 56 homes in the Columbia Gorge community of Rowena, Oregon last week. As I sit here writing this, it's 34% contained. This news is just one of many developments in that time span to absorb, consider, and file away in my mental model of the world.I was out near where this soundscape was recorded last week, doing some plein air sketching and recording. It was so serene. When the world can feel overwhelming, it's nice to just have something to do with your hands, something to focus on in the present, something to contemplate with a sense of wonder.Happy Summer Solstice. Thanks for being here; for listening and reading. Forest Spring Suite is available under the artist name Listening Spot on all streaming platforms Friday, June 20th.

Here at Fuse 8 n' Kate, I'd like to clarify a few points before we start to discuss today's podcast. First and foremost, this podcast was recorded approximately two weeks ago, well before the events in California right now started to occur. It would not, in a million years, have occurred to us that a discussion of the events that take place in Smoky Night would have had any bearing on the current political situation. To be perfectly frank, more than anything else I wanted to talk to Kate about the book within the context of #MeToo. After all, with the recent discussions of Neil Gaiman and whether or not to strip him of his Newbery Medal following his own recent allegations, it seemed timely to consider our other cancelled children's literature award winner. In this podcast we attempt to delineate, as clearly as possible, the difference between a riot and a protest. We discuss whether or not this was a book that was trying to be Do the Right Thing for kids, and whose lens this story is shot through in the end.
