Fifth Sunday in LentToday's Gospel seems to touch on a delicate part of humanity which is that when things get bad God seems to abandons us. Instead, Jesus intentionally waits to visit Martha and Mary at the news of Lazarus' sickness and death so that something greater can take place. Some of us are not waiting for a miracle...we're hiding in our tombs. Today, Jesus stands before that place in your life and says: "come out." Easter Sunday "Roll away the stone.  See the glory of God.  Roll away the stone." What stones are still blocking the tomb of your heart?  This Easter, God wants to roll those stones away.   Christ doesn't roll it away to shame us—He rolls it away so that He can enter in.  Just as He stepped out of the tomb into the garden of new life, bringing into our world something entirely new — so Jesus wants to step into the tombs we've been trapped in and say, “Peace be with you, ” bringing His light and His healing, to clear out the old, musty, life-draining, stale air, and bring in a breath of new, fresh, moving, life-giving air! Happy Easter!

Ever feel like you're facing a giant stone you can't move? The women at Jesus' tomb felt that way. "Who will roll this away for us?" they wondered. I know I've had those moments – that piano felt like one! But just like that unexpected help with the piano, the story of Easter shows us that Jesus is the one who rolls away the truly impossible stones in our lives: sin, judgment, and even death itself. The hopes of His followers died when Jesus died. He was taken from the cross and Joseph of Arimathea wrapped the body of Jesus in a linen shroud and laid him in his own tomb. Mary Magdelene and Mary, the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. The women brought spices so that they could anoint his body. There only thought was "Who can roll away the stone for us?" We can ask the same question today. Who can roll the stone away for us? Who can break the power of death for us? Only Jesus can. How? "Who will roll away the stone for us?" the women ask. This is a profound spiritual question. Had Jesus not rolled it away, we would be stuck in our graves forever. But even now, that stone traps us in this life, a life filled with the fear of death and misery. The stone rolled away is a portal to a new life with Jesus.

This meditation was preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai at the end of a retreat for priests to the Manoir de Beaujeu, near Montreal, on February 3, 2023. Easter Vigil Gospel: Mark 16, 1-7 The women: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome, had an important task. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. “Don't be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'” We can think now what is the stone in my way to see the real truth about Jesus? What stone stops me from testifying? Stone could be our fear. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34 And he said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 36 So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37 But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?”38 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.” 40 Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”1.     Do you sometimes feel that Jesus should have done something more or differently in your life?   2.     What is the difference between revivification and resurrection?  Which do you go through life wanting?  3.     Does it seem contradictory to be sorrowful and angry about a world controlled by a good God?  4.     What stones need to be rolled away in your life?  What stones could you roll away in others' lives?  5.     Do you doubt whether bringing Jesus to the death and darkness in your life will do anything?  6.     What kind of glory will you see from Jesus if you trust him?
