Ascension of the LordThere can be a temptation to think Jesus' ascension into heaven was his way of distancing himself physically and spiritually from humanity. Instead, Jesus reminds his disciples that he must go otherwise the Paraclete (Holy Spirit) will not come. Our Catholic Christian faith is rooted in the hope of both the Resurrection and the Ascension of the Lord. May the ascended Lord renew us in our quest to soar like eagles.Scripture Readings for June 1, 2025Acts 1:1-11Psalm 47:2-3, 6-9Hebrews 9:24-28; 10:19-23Luke 24:46-53

Sixth Sunday in EasterGod is revealed in three stages throughout human history. First, God the Father is revealed in the Old Testament as above His creation. Next, God the Son is revealed in the New Testament by becoming human. Finally, the Holy Spirit is revealed through the Church within the heart of man. Fifth Sunday of EasterToday's Gospel is one of Jesus' last earthly life discourses. He installs a new commandment: "Love one another as I have loved you. Love is an act of the will, demonstrating both one's care for another's wellbeing, while also reinforcing one's connection to Jesus as his disciples. Just because life is difficult does not mean we are not living life correctly. As our first reading from Acts reminds us, "it is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God" (14:22). Jesus death on the cross is a vivid reminder, that he loves us to the very end.Scripture Readings for May 18, 2025  Acts 14:21-27Psalm 145:8-13Revelation 21:1-5John 13:31-33, 34-35

Third Sunday in Ordinary  TimeJesus is back home in the synagogue where he grew up. Many of the people there were those who knew Him, his father Joseph, and his mother Mary well. Why do the people of Nazareth and all of humanity have a hard time accepting Jesus? Because the God of the universe is closer than we want Him to be. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. The Baptism of the LordOne of the most important moments in the life of a Christian is their baptism. Yet, for most people their baptism took place when they were weeks or months old with little to no personal recollection of the event. Gratefully, our parents knew better and acted on our behalf. Baptism can be seen strictly as a membership card to Church or rite of passage. Yet, baptism is more so the beginning of our new life in Christ.Baptism marks the beginning of the journey for the rest of our lives, our on-going responsiveness to the Gospel, which aligns with our sole identity as God's beloved sons and daughters. Fourth Sunday of AdventIn today's readings as in our daily lives, the presence of God is recognized in the little things. Does not each of us know how a small gesture of greeting can transform someone? Not a word from Mary is recorded in today's Gospel but her gesture of familial love speaks volumes. We have probably been busy with the hustle and bustle of the Christmas shopping season, placing Advent on our to-do list for the holidays. It is not too late. We know that Christmas is only hours away but there is still time to prepare. It takes just a word to do what we should have been doing since the start of Advent if not the start of our lives of faith... say Yes to God in small ways. As Mother Teresa once said, God does not call us to be successful, He calls us to be faithful. This approach is at the heart of Christianity. Scripture Readings for December 22, 2024Micah 5:1-4Psalm 80:2-3, 15-16, 18-19Hebrews 10:5-10Luke 1:39-45

2nd Sunday in AdventIn our second reading, St. Paul is writing to the Philippians encouraging them that, he is "confident, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus." Biblical scholars would call God the "hound of heaven." We love God because God first loved us (1 John 4:19). Here is how Jesus acknowledged this truth, “You did not choose me, but I chose you” (John 15:16). With these Bible verses in mind one, Francis Thompson described God as “The Hound of Heaven.” God is always in search of his creation and that whatever God begins, He intends to finish. First Sunday of AdventThe season of Advent is a time of waiting, properly understood as preparation. During the hustle and bustle of the holiday season it is normal to focus on menu planning, shopping for gifts, and writing Christmas cards. These are the usual ways to prepare for Christmas. One important part we left out though is found in today's Gospel. Jesus tells his disciples, “Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man” (Luke 21:36-38). Advent provides us the opportunity to reflect on the reason for waiting...the arrival of Jesus Christ into our hearts. We also learn how we wait... Anxiously? Lonely? Curiously? Thankfully? Joyfully? As we begin this holy season, let us ask the Lord to open our hearts in prayer to receive the gift of his ever abiding presence. Scripture Reading December 1, 2024Jeremiah 33:14-16Psalm 25:4-5, 8-10, 141 Thessalonians 3:12—4:2Luke 21:25-28, 34-36

We can find this message in the parable of the wedding feast, urging us to extend God's invitation of love and salvation to all. Before we are to engage in the worldwide mission of evangelization, the spreading of faith, we ourselves need to be evangelized. As St. Pope John Paul II said many times throughout his pontificate, "open wide the doors to Christ!" Through prayers, sacrifices, and contributions on this day, we share the joy of Christ with over 1,100 Mission Dioceses under the Holy Father's care across Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Pacific Islands, and the Middle East. Twenty Seventh Sunday in Ordinary TimeThe God of Israel wants his people to be fruitful and to multiply. In our modern times, the breakdown of marriage and family life comes from a tendency to define one's own life on one's own terms. This kind of philosophy represents the breaking apart of the biblical vision of God's intentions for mankind. As Jesus referenced in the book of Genesis, "It's not good for man to be alone" (Genesis 2:18), this mutual self-gift and love between man and woman gives rise to children. This is the biblical vision which is under assault today, but as faithful followers of Jesus Christ, we must stand up and defend this beautiful vision. Scripture Reading for October 6, 2024Genesis 2:18-24Ps 128:1-6Hebrews 2:9-11Mark 10:2-16

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeOnce again we are in the middle of a contentious election cycle, which presents challenges and opportunities to proclaim our Catholic faith. This year in Missouri we are voting on Amendment 3, a proposal to radically change out constitution. Jennifer Brinker, archdiocesan columnist wrote, "Amendment 3 would eliminate legal protections that currently safeguard the pre-born and well as their mothers, fathers, families and society from the harm of abortion." One could say that Church should remain out of politics, sure, but life is not a partisan issue. To this end in our Gospel today Jesus speaks powerfully to our current culture, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.  Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! If Jesus' "marketing campaign" began today he may not last long as he spoke about people eating his flesh and drinking his blood, rejection, suffering, and even death itself. Nonetheless, Jesus does not back down from the truth of what it means to be a Christian nor how one is able to acquire and live a life according to Godly values. The excitement and anticipation has been tempered though when Jesus and the twelve arrive at their intended place of rest, and the crowd has arrived there first. Our human tendency is to roll the eyes, get frustrated, and remove "distractions" as soon as possible. Instead, Jesus rolls up his sleeves and gets to work as they were "like sheep without a shepherd." Pastoral ministry can be challenging and exhausting at times. Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Imagine, with your restless hearts and minds, are in the boat with the disciples in today's Gospel. You are surrounded by a violent storm with waves breaking over the boat, you are filled with fear as the boat fills with water. Picture these waves as the worries, problems, concerns, and stressful issues that are overwhelming your peace. You have now reached the point where you became angry enough to cry out to Jesus as the disciples did, “Wake up! Don't you care?” Can't you see what I am going through? I'm beginning to drown in pain.” Everything now is coming to a climax. Can you take it? Jesus heard the cries of his disciples, as he hears your cries. Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea calmed with three simple words, “Quiet! Be Still"! Are you listening to Jesus carefully? Quiet, Be Still. The storms of worry and stress have ceased because you trusted in the Lord Jesus. You gave control to Him just like many others throughout human history. You are not alone! This is not a one time storm as you know. Enter the storms with Jesus Christ and allow him to lead you to the other side.Scripture Readings for June 23, 2024Job 38:1, 8-11Psalm 107:23-31 2 Corinthians 5:14-17Mark 4:35-41

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary TimeSometimes we fail to appreciate the glory that God has in store for us. We can become overwhelmed with the daily struggles of our lives and be stunned at the way of the world with all its problems. But the Scriptures this week remind us that great things can happen when we let go and let God's power transform us.Jesus uses images of the sower and the mustard seed to explain the kingdom of God. Although seemingly small or insignificant, these examples demonstrate that great things can happen through the work of God. All of our efforts in building the kingdom, even if they seem small, will be blessed by God. Scripture Readings for June 16thEzekiel 17:22-24Psalm 92:2-3, 13-162 Corinthians 5:6-10Mark 4:26-34

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeKintsugi, also known as "golden repair", is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. As we age and mature, we continue to identify areas of personal brokenness. An important area to pay attention to is unforgiveness. Jesus is quite clear in speaking with the scribes, the greatest sin of all is the sin of blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Jesus desires to help humanity put back the broken pieces of our lives and in so doing we tap into the power of the Holy Spirit. Scripture Readings for June 9, 2024Genesis 3:9-15Psalm 130:1-82 Corinthians 4:13—5:1Mark 3:20-35

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ         St. Maximilian Kolbe once said, “If angels could be jealous of men, they would be so for one reason: Holy Communion.” This Sunday we celebrate Corpus Christi. From the Catechism, the Eucharist assists Catholics in many ways: an increase of union with Christ; forgiveness of venial sins; preservation from future mortal sins; strengthening of the Church; helping the unity of the Church."O Christ, let my greatest delight be to see You loved and Your praise and glory proclaimed, especially the honor of Your mercy. O Christ, let me glorify Your goodness and mercy to the last moment of my life, with every drop of my blood and every beat of my heart. Would that I be transformed into a hymn of adoration of You. When I find myself on my deathbed, may the last beat of my heart be a loving hymn glorifying Your unfathomable mercy. Amen." -St. Faustina

Holy Trinity SundayOn this great solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we boldly celebrate and affirm the Mystery of our God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one of our most basic, core beliefs as Catholics that we fail to grasp completely. Men and women mirror God's image and likeness, whose core purpose, identity, and mission is to live as God's beloved sons and daughters. Given our culture this way of knowing and living can be jeopardized.  Therefore, calling upon the Blessed Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we are renewed in mind, body, and spirit that God's will may be done now and forever.Scripture Readings for May 26, 2024Deuteronomy 4:32-34, 39-40Psalm 33:4-6, 9, 18-20, 22Romans 8:14-17Matthew 28:16-20

Sixth Sunday in EasterJesus, looking at his disciples, pronounces one of the most revealing and empathic statements in all of sacred scripture: “You are my friends”. It is much easier to think of Jesus as a rabbi, political leader, or military leader. These types of relationships are rooted in authority. Incredibly, Jesus does not want to simply rule over our lives, but commune with us at the deepest level. No greater love than for one to lay down one's life for one's friends, proving Jesus will love us to the end.Scripture Readings for May 5, 2024Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48Psalm 98:1-41 John 4:7-10John 15:9-17

Fourth Sunday in EasterJesus is the the model shepherd and guardian of our souls. He makes it clear that a good shepherd lays down his life for the protection and guidance of the sheep. The bad or hired shepherd, is merely utilitarian. When trouble (wolves) arrive, this shepherd flees as he is only interested in the self and self-preservation. St. Peter, unfortunately, was like the hired shepherd at one point who denied Christ three times in his moment of need. Yet, St. Peter emerged as the leader and shepherd of the Universal Church. Thus, there is hope for all.One of the quintessential qualities of being a sheperd is courage. The main source of our courage is knowledge of God and of his constant care for us. Many people who are plagued by fear are really suffering from a problem of truth. They have not grasped through wisdom and understanding who God really is and how he orders his world. God wants to shepherd his people and in so doing lead them home.Scripture Readings for April 21, 2024Acts 4:8-12Psalm 118: 1, 8-9, 21-23, 26, 28, 291 John 3:1-2John 10:11-18

Third Sunday in Easter"You are witnesses to these things." -Luke 24:48As human beings we witness many things ranging from good to evil. To witness means that one sees, hears, and knows by personal presence and or perception. It is the ability to testify to; to give or afford evidence of something or someone. The twelve apostles were witnesses of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Particularly, these post resurrection appearances made by Jesus remind his disciples and followers that death ultimately leads to life. As Christians, we have been commissioned by Christ to not only experience the power of God individually but witness to it by the holiness of our daily lives.Scripture Readings for April 14, 2024Acts 3:13-15, 17-19Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-91 John 2:1-5Luke 24:35-48

Divine Mercy SundayBlessed John Henry Newman once said, " 10,000 difficulties do not equal 1 doubt. To Blessed Newman's point, we face difficulties every day which can lead to pain and suffering. Suffering, if seen in light of faith, has the ability to purify the mind, intellect, and will. In today's Gospel, Thomas was not with the disciples when Jesus appeared to the disciples. When Thomas did arrive though, he made an incredible statement about not believing unless he sees the nail marks and places his hand into Jesus' side. We can all relate to Thomas. Sometimes words are not enough as our pain and suffering run deep. Therefore, seek and you shall find. He has Truly Risen!Blessed Easter to you!We do not hear much about Holy Saturday as we move from the tragic events of Good Friday to the Glory of Easter Sunday. Nonetheless, the stillness and great calm of Holy Saturday helps prepare the Church for a most glorious day!!!"What is happening? Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was in terror and was still, because God slept in the flesh and raised up those who were sleeping from the ages. God has died in the flesh, and the underworld has trembled. Truly he goes to seek out our first parent like a lost sheep; he wishes to visit those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He goes to free the prisoner Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, he who is God, and Adam's son." (Source: Ancient Homily)

Our focus has been and always will be Jesus. Palm Sunday invites the Universal Church to walk with Him as He endures His passion. Jesus' walk toward Golgotha can provide encouragement to humanity as well. Fifth Sunday in LentThe Scripture readings for this weekend remind us that God has formed an alliance or covenant with His people just as He has done throughout all generations. A covenant requires humanity to abide by God's established rules. Moses reminded the people about the covenant God established with Israel. Jeremiah reminded the Israelite people to stay faithful to the covenant. Jesus now simply does not follow the law but comes to fulfill it. Take some time to pray that this Lenten season may inspire you, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to follow God's laws which have been taught not as an ideal but as a lived reality. Third Sunday in LentSt. Paul, in his First Letter to the Corinthians, calls people to remember the heart of faith: "proclaiming Christ crucified.” Though we may focus on Jesus' teaching or his miracles, the core of our faith is rooted in this reality. From the cross Jesus reveals God's love to all people no matter who they are. Jesus proclaims God's forgiveness to all. Therefore, our lives are intended to model service and sacrifice. Putting now this belief into practice beckons a call to action as individuals and as a community. Proclaiming Christ Crucified eliminates divisions that may develop within local communities, the Church, and society at large. Scripture Readings for March 3, 2024Exodus 20:1-17Psalm 19:8-111 Corinthians 1:22-25John 2:13-25
