Today's podcast features our Content Strategy for Digital Creators from WIBS 2021. Moderated by Ash Eliot, who you likely know from Women of the Bevolution and Brave Noise, our speakers Sarah Flora and Natalya Watson share with us how they got into beer and the road to being educators in that space. Nat chats transferrable skills to get into the industry, Sarah gives some tips on how to get started in homebrewing and then we dive into the content creator strategy. They discuss the importance of goals when crafting content and each breaks down how they approach content strategy for different platforms and audiences. Ash inquires about staying engaged when there is so much content out there already and the two of them discuss the benefits and inevitable pitfalls of podcasting. This is then followed up with some great Q&A from that day's attendees. So, as always, sit back and enjoy this episode of the Craft Fermentation Podcast. Who says you need a reason to saison? Saison is all the reason you need. On this landmark episode, we again drink five different takes on our favorite style of beer - but we pepper this one with some interviews. You'll hear from Sarah Flora from Flora Brewing on how she ended up releasing a saison with Chicago's Pilot Project, in addition to how the art world brought her to be one of the most popular homebrewers on social media. Then we hear from Sway Brewing and Blending's Matt Sampson on how a side project of a side project ended up releasing exquisite saisons in 16 ounce cans out of Door County, Wisconsin. And Afterthought's Mike Thorpe phones in briefly to talk about his Revolution collab. As a bonus, you get to listen in as Ryan experiences a beer as he never has before: blasted through his nasal cavities at an extreme rate of propulsion. If that's not enough, there's brewery theme parks, heavy bubbles, and a popcorn-based TikTok challenge. It's episode 450 - something had to explode. Interview with Sarah Flora - (00:10:11 - 00:23:35) Interview with Matt Sampson - (00:43:15 - 00:53:37) Interview with Mike Thorpe - (01:13:44 - 01:15:32) Beers Reviewed Flora Brewing/Pilot Project Brewing - Blossom Tonic (Saison w/ tart cherry juice, rosemary, and coriander) Young Blood Beer Company/Fair State Brewing Cooperative - Death, Taxes, and 1-94 Construction (Dry-hopped Belgian-style saison) Sway Brewing + Blending - A Lovely Place to Be (Foeder-fermented mixed-culture spelt saison) Seedz Brewery - Green Bottle Saison (Whole leaf hoppy saison) Revolution Brewing Company/Afterthought Brewing - Foreknowledge (Dry-hopped saison)

Expertise is an easy thing to pin down … or is it? There's the oft-cited 10,000 hours that it takes to become an expert. Or there's a dictionary we could pull from a book shelf or mobile device to look up a definition. Or maybe we just know it when we see it in action. There are all sorts of experts who share all sorts of expertise with the world, and whether they know it, like it, or claim it, it's inspiring. We could turn to Google any time we want, but there's something special—and perhaps necessarily human—about not relying on a manual or book and finding expertise from another person. In this conversation, we hear from Sarah Flora, a homebrewer with a large following across social media and YouTube, an award-winning podcast, and by all means, an expert. She connects people across the globe with tips and insights on the homebrewing process, beer reviews, and light-hearted reflections on what it means to exist in the beer and homebrewing worlds. Throughout this chat, we connect these things to how Sarah approaches educating herself and others, the value of taking risks, and why it's valuable to have loved ones giving you a little push when you need it. Sarah was part of Good Beer Hunting's 2021 Signifiers—an annual collection of people GBH celebrates who shape the future of the beer industry. It's Sarah's expertise that puts her in that position, and a drive to learn and improve that will help you understand the “how” and “why” she inspires others. The thousands of interactions Sarah gets on Instagram posts or YouTube videos every week are basic measurements of her impact, but as you learn more about her as a person as we talk, you'll likely find an even greater appreciation for how she uses her skills to make being an expert delightfully human.

During the pandemic, a lot of breweries were launched into all things digital trying to find unique ways to directly engage with consumers. Though this was in the works prior to the pandemic, I knew I had to talk to Great Notion Brewing about their new app and hear more about their direct-to-consumer strategy over this past year and a half. I chat with Paul Reiter, CEO & Co-Founder of Great Notion Brewing in Portland, Oregon, about what it takes to open a brewery...especially now that they have five locations, how the beer labels have now inspired this magical world they've created in their own app which now includes a video game component, and what beer style is the hottest trend this year. Also right before this episode, I celebrated 20K subscribers on my YouTube so what great timing for our episode on marketing & content. You can read more about each episode and get updated straight to your inbox by subscribing to the Substack: BrewingAfterHours.Substack.com For podcast updates, behind the scenes content, brewing tutorials and beer reviews follow Sarah Flora on Instagram at @Flora_Brewing, subscribe to the Flora Brewing YouTube Channel or sign up for her Patreon for ad-free content, merch and lots more!See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In part 2 of the science behind animals getting drunk off fermented fruit, we're exploring the jungle with biologist and Discovery Channel's Expedition X Host Phil Torres who also has a great YouTube series called The Jungle Diaries. Fermentation is magic. If you watch my brewing tutorial videos, you've probably seen me wearing a shirt saying that exact thing. I've always been fascinated by fermentation in not just beer, but food as well so I thought it's about time we talk about it with an expert and the King of Fermentation himself, Sandor Katz, author of "The Art of Fermentation," "Wild Fermentation" and several more titles you can order and learn more about at WildFermentation.com. On the show we discuss the process of fermentation in beer and food, the health benefits and connection it has with culture. I also talk a lot about chicha. You can read more on this episode at FloraBrewing.com/Podcast or subscribe to the Substack: BrewingAfterHours.Substack.com for updates straight to your inbox! For podcast updates, behind the scenes content, brewing tutorials and beer reviews follow Sarah Flora on Instagram at @Flora_Brewing, subscribe to the Flora Brewing YouTube Channel or sign up for her Patreon for ad-free content, merch and lots more!

"Sarah Flora is a Los Angeles-based homebrewer who wants to be the next Martha Stewart (pre-2004) of brewing. Two years ago, Sarah purchased a homebrew kit as a gift for her husband, but little did she know it would become her new hobby and the start of her next career. Running operations for an art gallery by day, on her days off she's brewing and documenting every stage while reviewing her brews in the process. Since, she's won numerous awards for her beers, grown an engaged following on Instagram and YouTube, and received press coverage nationwide. As she continues to share her passion for homebrewing, Sarah is also planning to open up her own brewery in Washington state. Also, Sarah is a current member of homebrew clubs SoCal Cerveceros and the Maltose Falcons." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dan-matthews2/message
