Terrie Cooper spent 25 years working on the forever-protection of Door County land with the Door County Land Trust, co-authoring $30 million in state and federal land acquisition grants and helping the organization grow from 1,000 protected acres when she began to more than 10,000 today. She retired in October 2024 and, in May 2025, received the 2025 Harold “Bud” Jordahl Lifetime Achievement Award from Gathering Waters, Wisconsin's Alliance for Land Trusts. She talks with Debra Fitzgerald about her career, how growing up on the peninsula shaped that career, and what we all need to know about this beautiful yet fragile land we call home.

The Peninsula Pulse's annual Sustainability issue, out on April 18, contains the stories and voices of people across Door County who are working in some aspect of the climate-preparedness realm, whether through observations, data collection or actions. One of those voices and stories comes from Charlie Henriksen, a commercial fisherman for 50 years, owner of Henriksen Fisheries since 1987, and Henriksen's Fish House, a retail operation, since 2022. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Pamela Kyel, author of the book Charm City Spouse's Club. Award-winning author Pamela Kyel was born and raised in Edgewood, Maryland—north of Charm City. It's kind of a running joke that when you live near a large, well-known city, you tell people that's where you're from. So, unofficially, she's from Baltimore! She followed the drum of the Air Force for 25 years. She joined her husband on six assignments—OCONUS (Outside Continental United States), aka overseas, and CONUS (Continental United States). Along the way, they added two children and numerous pets, not counting the half-a-dozen cats that came with their house in Italy. She has traveled extensively across the states and Europe, with her favorite overseas locations being Paris and Slovenia, among stateside favorites such as Rocky Mountain National Park and Door County, Wisconsin. Family is important to her, and nowhere is that more evident than in her Charm City Mystery Series. When you've lived across the world from mothers and brothers, you adapt and overcome. You create family—and they stay with you long after the career ends. Her military family resides in Virginia, Texas, and North and South Carolina—with many still on active duty worldwide. Writing came out of their duty station in Illinois. She picked up her computer while sitting with her elementary-age child through covid classes and thought, I can write a book. And the rest is history. While her original novel will never see the light of day, she grew and expanded her confidence in what she was doing. She was good at this, and she would have something to show for it one day. In a little over three years, she'd trod the agent querying circuit and amended her goal. Now, she just needed to hold her book in her hand. It was necessary. With that in mind, she sent out three queries to small publishers, and for her, the third time was the charm. The Wild Rose Press picked up her book and offered a contract. Less than a year later, she now held all those years of hard work in her hand. In my book review, I stated Charm City Spouses Club is the second installment of the Charm City Mystery series. If you loved Special Agent Laci Duvall, AFOSI in the first book, you won't be disappointed in the second! This time, Laci is at a friendly baseball game between the Air Force and Army's Special Investigative Teams. However, the friendly game turns deadly when the president of the military spouse's club turns up dead in the bathroom. The list of potential murder suspects is long - from jealous women who wanted to be president to unhappy club officers who hated the president's cruel nature, to unhappy neighbors and everyone in between. But Laci isn't just trying to solve a murder. She is figuring out how to work in tandem with another military agency all while fighting the new agent in her own office who wants to make a name for herself by taking over the investigation without Laci's direction or approval. Once again, we see Laci's humor, charm, and insights into the world around her. This is a book you won't want to miss. For 55 years Jim Ingwersen has been one of Door County's most-acclaimed and prolific artists, painting portraits of Supreme Court Justices, contemporary artists and hundreds of other commissions from his studio on Old Stage Road outside Sister Bay. As he nears his 96th birthday, he has reached an agreement to donate his gallery, hundreds of paintings and home to the Peninsula School of Art to serve as a dynamic home to creativity for generations to dome. Adam Erickson, director of Pen Art, joins Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about Ingwersen's gift, his legacy, and what the future holds for the property.

Dairy farmers are waiting to witness the impact of revisions to the Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMO) beginning in June. How can you best prepare your farm for some of the risk that comes with these changes? Leonard Polzin is a dairy economist with the Division of Extension. He’ll be walking us through the what-ifs of 2025 wiuth Stephanie Hoff. But first, he reminds us that the Dairy Margin Coverage enrollment is open now! He used to milk cows, today he raises beef along with selling real estate. "Wine is bottled poetry." - Robert Louis Stevenson Guest Introduction: Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan, and it's an absolute joy to share this adventure with you. Travel isn't just about where you go—it's about who you become along the way. And I'm so glad you're here, ready to start this journey together. If you love today's episode, I'd be so grateful if you shared it with your friends, spread the word on social media, or left a quick rating and review. Your support means everything—it helps us reach more travelers and dreamers just like you. Let's keep inspiring meaningful journeys together. Thanks for being part of the Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition community! Now, it's my pleasure to introduce today's guest, Karen Gregory. Karen Gregory is a lover of travel, good food, and great wine! Her wine travel adventures have included Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, California, Oregon, and Washington, as well as little hidden gems in Rhode Island, the Ozarks, and Door County. Through her travels, her passion and appreciation for culture, ambiance, and wine experiences have grown and she's here to share that with us! Here's a glimpse of our conversation: 3:22 I've developed a deep appreciation for a wide variety of wines. It wasn't something I grew up around or knew much about in my twenties. Even in my thirties, I was just beginning to explore and try wines from different regions. 6:34 Five years later, most of my go-to wines are either from biofarms or biodynamic producers. They're organic, and many are even natural, which is considered the highest standard if you're looking for completely clean wines. 9:45 You've probably heard me mention Chateau Ste. Michelle many times. I'm not paid to promote them—I just genuinely love their wine. Even though they're conventional, I enjoy them, and I feel good when I drink them. 10:37 Here's the deal with Old World and New World wines. When I think of Old World, I automatically think of Europe—places like France, Italy, Spain, and naturally Portugal. Those regions just embody what we consider Old World. 16:01 Everyone loves the idea and ambiance of drinking wine in Tuscany—it sparks so much imagination. But Italy has so many incredible wine regions, and Tuscany is just one of them. That said, it does produce some truly great wines. 19:27 Here's the big takeaway for anyone listening: get out there and try some wine! If you love a good Cabernet Sauvignon, start by buying bottles from different regions. Try at least two to compare, then maybe add a third or fourth. Keep experimenting and refining your preferences, because every Cab is unique, and this process will help you discover what you truly like and don't like. 21:32 I'm probably not the best person to ask since I'm not a certified sommelier. BREAK: We're going to take a quick 30-second break—don't go anywhere! I have something truly special to share. Picture this: a magical winter wonderland where enchanting Christmas markets come alive. Join us December 3rd to 9th, 2025, for an unforgettable festive getaway to the Christmas Markets of Montreal and Quebec City with Collette. And here's a highlight you won't want to miss—on Day 6, we'll visit the breathtaking Montmorency Falls (maant·mr·en·see faalz), a true winter masterpiece. It's the perfect blend of nostalgia and holiday magic, ideal for friends and empty nesters alike. For all the details, visit PangeaWorldTravelAgency.com. Don't miss out—this is a holiday adventure you'll treasure forever! 27:00 What really clicked for me is that most people familiar with Willamette Valley, Oregon, know it's renowned for Pinot Noirs. But what stood out is that the region also produces some excellent whites, particularly Chardonnays, as well as other varieties like Syrah and Gamay. You can find Karen Gregory at: TheWinederer | Instagram Thank you for joining me on Exploring the Seasons of Life: Travel Edition! I'm Cindy MacMillan—your host, travel advisor, and transformational coach. It's been an absolute joy to share this adventure with you today. Dr. Greg Kleinheinz, director of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Environmental Research and Innovation Center, has overseen beach-water testing in Door County for more than 20 years. For the past five years, he's also worked with the County of Door on a well-testing program designed to learn what's in private-well drinking water. He talks about the hot spots for certain pollutants like nitrates, and what a new tracer program is turning up, and touches first upon how the data-driven beach-water testing program has evolved.
Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, Wisconsin (courtesy photo) Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, established in 1868, is on a 76-foot bluff in Peninsula State Park in Door County, Wisconsin. The square tower, constructed of Cream City brick from Milwaukee, is connected to the keeper's house. The light served to guide shipping through the Strawberry Channel. In its active history (1868-1926), there were only three keepers. William Duclon served an impressive 35 years (1883-1918). He and his wife raised seven sons at the light station. When the lamp was automated with acetylene gas in 1926, the era of resident keepers and their families at Eagle Bluff came to a close. 1905 view from the water (courtesy photo) Keeper William Duclon and his wife Julia lived at Eagle Bluff for 35 years (courtesy photo) The Door County Historical Society in Wisconsin operates two historic sites: Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park and Heritage Village at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay. Restoring and furnishing Eagle Bluff Lighthouse began in 1960 and took three years to complete. Since that time, the society has maintained the site and offered tours during the summer and fall months. Interviewed in this episode is Amy Frank, executive director of the Door County Historical Society.
A new documentary about Wisconsin's lighthouses premiers on Wisconsin Public Television on Dec. 2, and as you'd expect, Door County's lights feature prominently in the episode. The film's producer, Jeff Pfeifer, joins Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about why these structures have such a pull on our psyche and shares some of the stories he used to bring the historical subject to life.
Baking is a science, according to Peninsula Pulse reporter Eleanor Corbin, who has a long lineage of bakers in her family, and was herself bit by the baking bug as a young girl helping in her mom's kitchen and pie shops. Eleanor offers some great baking tips, utensils she can't live without, how to roll the perfect pie crust – and so much more that will be helpful for this baking-mad season (and beyond). She also talks about her reporting on bakers around Door County and what it takes for them to meet the Thanksgiving demand for pies.

Hans Christian, classically trained as a cellist in his native Germany, emigrated to 1980s Hollywood to study bass guitar and pursue a career as a rock musician. More than three decades later, the performer, recording engineer, producer and multi-instrumentalist has lived a fascinating story (complete with famous people like Billy Idol, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Ram Dass, to name just three) – including his serendipitous meeting in San Francisco with Northern Sky's Doc Heide and Fred Alley, planting the seed about a place called Door County that Christian today calls home. Christian talks with Debra Fitzgerald about his career, his current work at his Studio 330 in Sturgeon Bay – and about being nominated for a Grammy in 2023 for his original music, Ocean Dreaming Ocean, in the category of New Age/Ambient/Chant.
When the Door County Trails group was formed, it turned to urban planner Sophie Parr to create inventory and vision maps for Door County's bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. Parr joins Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about the process she used to create the maps and how the future could look for non-motorized transportation in the county. They also talk about her love of maps and what inspired her passion for urban planning.
Despite historic investments in early childhood education in Door County, we continue to lag far behind the number of spaces needed for families in our community. Elliot Haspel spoke at the recent Door County Child Care Summit sponsored by the United Way, reminding local leaders that the struggle is not unique to Door County. The author of "Crawling Behind: the Child Care Crisis and How to Solve It" joins Myles Dannhausen Jr. to talk about why policy-makers have struggled to understand the problem and coalesce around solutions.

The Washington Roundtable discusses the avalanche of disinformation that has taken over the 2024 election cycle, including an A.I. video meant to slander Tim Walz and claims that the votes are rigged before they're even counted. Will this torrent of lies tip the election in favor of Donald Trump? Is there a way out of this morass of untruth? “I think the lies are clearly winning,” the staff writer Evan Osnos says. “But I would also say that that doesn't mean that we should abandon the tools that are available.” Osnos notes recent defamation rulings against Rudy Giuliani and Fox News over false statements about the 2020 election as cases in point. Reporting from the Appalachian Mountains, correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi surveys one of the hardest hit areas of Hurricane Helene, a category four storm that tore through six states more than three weeks ago. Alfonsi visits communities in rural western North Carolina where the search for the missing goes on as most residents endure life without water, electricity, communications, and passable roads. All are attempting to rebuild - most have no insurance. Months after anti-Putin activist Alexei Navalny died in a Russian prison, his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, now the leading figure of his political movement, speaks with correspondent Lesley Stahl in her first U.S. interview about her late husband's posthumous memoir. Navalnaya discusses the book, Navalny's last act of defiance against the Kremlin, which chronicles his final three years behind bars under often brutal conditions, believed to be ordered by Russian president Vladimir Putin. She details his clandestine operation for penning the memoir inside a high-security prison and then smuggling it out, why the couple decided to return to Russia after Navalny was poisoned, and her daring campaign for justice in the wake of his death. Correspondent Jon Wertheim travels to Door County, Wisconsin, a bucolic coastal community where political party loyalty is up for grabs and residents have successfully voted for the winning candidate in every presidential election this century. Door County is the only swing state county with this distinction. Wertheim travels to Door County to get to know its residents and look for the mystery voter who's voted both Republican and Democrat successfully in every election since 2000. Bill Whitaker reports from Germany's Baltic Coast on the bombing of the Cap Arcona, a little-known human tragedy in the closing days of World War II in Europe. Once a luxurious German ocean liner, the Cap Arcona was commandeered by the Nazis and, at war's end, turned into a floating concentration camp. Thousands of prisoners were killed in the aerial attack. Whitaker interviews historians and Holocaust survivors who witnessed the bombing to bring this largely overlooked chapter of history to light. As much as it pains Jonah to admit it, Steve was right about the magic of Door County, Wisconsin. After he adequately disparages a few more of Steve's opinions, Jonah cleans up after Tucker Carlson and his crackpot “historian” crony. He discusses the role of intellectual and moral corruption in the legitimization of dishonorable revisionism, negates the Zinn-ification of history, and namedrops some philosophers. Plus: the consequences of appeasing your fans, the incessant misuse of the word “regime,” and the goofy goober grifters of Tenet Media.
