As the year comes to a close, we look back on the most-read stories of 2025 and the news that defined 2025 in Door County. Debra Fitzgerald and Myles Dannhausen Jr. also discuss the stories that readers should have read more of that will continue to make waves into 2026.
In September, Executive Director Cindy Trinkner-Peot celebrated the expansion and renovation of Northern Door Children's Center's facility in Sturgeon Bay, increasing the center's capacity by almost 30%. She joins Myles Dannhausen Jr. to discuss what the expansion means for meeting the demand for child care in northern Door County and the many challenges that remain. Hump Day is here and we're once again digging out. Feels like we've gotten some snow almost every day for the last week. It was that heavy, wet stuff last night. Yuck. In the news this morning, an update on tonight's Powerball drawing, some new license plates in WI, a person in Door County was trying to use a flashlight for a headlight on their vehicle, and a social media ban for kids in Australia. Lots of stuff going on this morning! We let you know what's on TV today/tonight and we talked about how movie theaters can help increase attendance in the future. Plus, we made our Week 15 Pigskin Picks! Speaking of Week 15, we took a look at the NFC North schedule for this weekend's action. And also in sports, the Badger men's basketball team takes on undefeated Nebraska tonight, the Bucks are at home against the Celtics tomorrow night, Philip Rivers is officially on the Colts again, Trey Hendrickson had surgery earlier this week and is done for the season, Kyle Schwarber gets a deal from the Phillies and Edwin Diaz is moving to L.A. Talked about some "Soft Skills" that can help you get a job in the new year. And a list of common tropes in Christmas movies and how to avoid them. This time of year, it's important to remember that you should try to shovel out the fire hydrants in your neighborhood, like this 9 year-old in Iowa. And a NYC doorman is going viral for collecting toys & warm clothing for people in need during the holiday season. Elsewhere in sports, the White Sox scored the #1 overall pick in the upcoming MLB draft, the NHL players might skip the 2026 Olympics if they don't think the ice is safe enough, and the Notre Dame AD is getting called out by the Big 12 Commissioner. New term for people who aren't quite a full introvert or extrovert. We're supposed to call them "otroverts" now. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy in Oklahoma who tried to rob a liquor store with an interesting weapon, a 64 year-old man who's known for playing Santa Claus that just got busted for kiddie porn, a #FloridaWoman who got arrested for DUI and tried to hide a bunch of pills in her vagina, a deer that broke into a Christmas store & got stuck in a chair, and the results of GameStop's "Trade Anything Day".See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to the spooky edition of the Civic Media Spotlight! First up is Nite Lite, where things got spooky as host and storyteller Carl Sarecki of the Door County Ghost Trolley Tours spun eerie tales from Wisconsin's peninsula. From haunted happenings in Fish Creek to mysterious sightings in Peninsula State Park, Carl shared the chilling history behind Door County's haunted past — including the infamous “Murder and Mayhem” tour that keeps even locals on edge. On The Maggie Dawn Show, guest Rachel LaCasse-Ford joined to discuss how political games are leaving families like hers struggling with unaffordable healthcare. While Republicans blame the Affordable Care Act, Maggie and Rachel exposed the hypocrisy of offering no real alternative — leaving everyday Americans to shoulder skyrocketing premiums and uncertainty about their future coverage. Former U.S. Attorney James Santelle stopped by Matenaer on Air for an in-depth conversation about justice, accountability, and the rule of law. They explored the work of Judge Sara Ellis in holding ICE to task in Chicago, and the broader importance of maintaining legal guardrails when government agencies overreach. It was a powerful reminder that standing up to intimidation is essential for protecting communities and democracy itself. On Mathew P. Kennedy, journalist Ruth Conniff from the Wisconsin Examiner tackled a double-barreled discussion — the mishandling of misconduct investigations within the Department of Public Instruction, and the political hypocrisy fueling it. Ruth pointed out how Republican grandstanding has made it harder to address real problems in education, while also breaking down the ripple effects of the GOP's government shutdown, including rising ACA premiums and farm labor challenges.
