Fr. Brian and Fr. Matt dive into the Pixar universe to break down themes of anxiety and sense of self in this year's Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film of all time and sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out. Our hosts draw parallels between the other emotions' efforts to rein in Anxiety (the character) and the Christian understanding that anxiety (the emotion) is not from God. They also discuss the movie's assertion that a person's sense of self is rooted in core memories and beliefs, similar to the Christian perspective of our identity being rooted in our relationship with God.(0:28) Our hosts greet each other and talk about some of the films they've seen recently. Fr. Brian playfully teases Fr. Matt for being “on the jumpy side” when watching scary movies. Then, they introduce today's topic: Inside Out 2, the highest-grossing animated film of all time and sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out.(3:53) Fr. Matt provides a synopsis of Inside Out, the story of a young girl named Riley who is guided through life by five anthropomorphized emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. Both Fr. Matt and Fr. Brian liked Inside Out better than its sequel, which adds a few more emotions to the mix: Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, Ennui, and–for just a moment–Nostalgia. They discuss how the existence of these new emotions, and the ways they interact with each other, impact the world building set by the original film.(10:46) After a brief interlude to revisit Fr. Matt's tendency toward jumpiness in the theater, our hosts discuss one of the new world building elements introduced in the film: Riley's memories grow into her beliefs, which together form her sense of self. At the beginning of the movie, her sense of self is, “I am a good person.” With the arrival of Anxiety, this sense of self is lost and replaced with, “I am not good enough.”(16:55) Fr. Matt shares his 7-year-old cousin's take on the film's message: “We can't let anxiety have control.” This opens the door to a discussion about the Christian understanding that anxiety is not from God, a teaching that is reflected in the film as the other characters work to control Anxiety and prevent her from controlling Riley.(25:10) Fr. Brian talks about the movie's assertion that a person's sense of self is rooted in core memories and beliefs, comparing it to the Christian perspective of our identity being rooted in our relationship with God. He and Fr. Matt highlight some of the more clever world building elements from the film, including the “Sarchasm,” a chasm inside Riley's mind that transforms genuine speech into sarcastic taunts. (29:36) Fr. Matt says the film is missing the idea of virtue driving our actions. Both hosts agree that they'd love to see a film similar to the Inside Out franchise featuring characters modeled after faith, hope, charity, prudence, justice, temperance, and fortitude. Fr. Brian suggests the Prudence character would lead the way, like Joy does in the existing films.(31:58) Our hosts rank Inside Out 2 using their “seeds of the word” rating, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story. They conclude the episode by sharing their all-time favorite Pixar movies.
before typing this out i sat for a whole five minutes in total silence. it was an accident. i didn’t mean to do it. but i’m realizing i don’t do that enough these days. and that maybe i should do it for longer sometimes. i’m in my bedroom and no one else is home right now. i can hear some quiet bird sounds from outside. i know the highway is only a few hundred feet away but i can’t hear it. there’s a low hum from something. probably the fan in the bathroom? the half bath doesn’t have a window so keeping the fan on in there helps keep it from getting too stuffy. the refrigerator makes sound but it’s mostly easy to tune out. i wonder if my lamp is making a sound right now. i just heard a motorcycle for a second. and now it’s gone.the heater just came on. in 15 seconds the fan will kick in and in another 20 second it’ll reach my bedroom. sound waves move through air. the heat moves through air to my body. i baste in it so my fingers can defrost and so i can finish this message to you. and then i’ll silence my fingers for five minutes.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Kate Davis “Daisy” Trophy03:14 Little Angry “Green Mountain” A Cup of Tea06:51 ratbath “the devil” cold golden boxes09:01 Chris Weisman “Yeah You” Romantics10:22 Friendship “You Might Already Know” Dreamin’14:02 Fern Mayo “Goddess Under Exclusions” Week of Charm17:53 Moor Mother “Passing Of Time” Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes22:05 Ganser “Motivational Speaking” You Must Be New Here26:22 False Advertising “Reading it Wrong” Brainfreeze30:30 Sharks’ Teeth “Face the Grove” Broken Trust in Satan32:44 Romantic States “Mike’s Property” Ballerina36:28 Sarchasm “Deadname” Beach Blanket Bummer Pop39:43 James Kochalka Superstar “Tape Hiss” Eggs40:56 Mono Lisa “Comment Party” Vision Engineering44:22 Joy Cleaner “Bad Advice” You’re So Jaded47:17 Parlor Walls “Spinning Gold” Lunchbox / Spinning Gold50:18 Rachael Dadd “Palaeontologist” FLUX54:38 Yawzea “Slaw” Zoning Demos57:06 Shutups “Almost Won The Lotto” Every Day I’m Less Zen60:10 Dead Little Penny “Out Of Body Experience” Urge Surfing64:01 Squarehead “Maybe” High Time67:46 WOOLWORM “Dogman” Awe69:45 LACKER “HEAVENS” TWO-FACED GAG71:44 thanks for coming “clue” the back of my knee74:29 22 Halo “Big Fire” 22 Halo
When it comes to East Bay punk stuff, Alex Botkin knows his stuff. As the person behind Lavasocks Records, Alex does his part to keep the history and radness of the East Bay sound alive with releases such as “The Thing That Ate Floyd” comp. “Floyd” originally came out on Lookout! Records back in the stone ages of 1988 and has pretty much every band from the Bay Area of the time on it. An incredible record that Alex felt needed a new lease on life. Coming soon from Lavasocks is a partnership with Sell The Heart Records and a rethinking of Rancid's classic record, “And Out Come The Wolves”. This version has a much better title, “And Out Come The Lawsuits”. Track by track, “…Lawsuits” features 19 bands covering ALL 19 songs on the original record and WOW. It's an amazing record! So, Alex and I talk about the records, a little music history of the Bay Area, Gilman Street, Lookout Records, Rancid and more! Music of the episode is two songs of of “Floyd” and “…Lawsuits” - Sweet Baby and Cringer off of Floyd, Danger Inc. and Sarchasm off of Lawsuits. This episode is brought to you by Thirty One Ten Printing and Hodad's.

This week, Mateo Campos and Alex Botkin of the band Sarchasm visit the show. Sarchasm, a self-described 'Bummer Pop' band from the East Bay area, met when they were still in junior high. Brothers Mateo and Stevie joined forces with Alex as teenagers, initially starting off as most bands do performing covers of their favorite bands, going to shows together, and slowly but surely integrating themselves into the scene. Fast forward 10+ years later, and they've now released multiple albums, been on several tours, and are starting to make quite a name for themselves in the independent music scene Their most recent self-titled album was released via Asian Man Records. As the band points out, becoming part of that roster of artists was both a surreal and validating experience, noting that it's a label that they grew up following and admiring. Along with other Bay Area upstarts Grumpster, Get Married, The Moore Family Band & Small Crush, Sarchasm represent the 'new guard' of artists on Asian Man, continuing in their tradition of working with great bands. Outside of the band, they keep busy as long-time volunteers at The Gilman Street Project in Berkeley, the storied co-op that has hosted just about any punk band you can name and then some. Along with that, they have their own label called Lavasocks records, who have released albums from the likes of Lousy Advice, Slumped and Danger Inc., and have also produced re-issues of classic Lookout! Records albums from Tilt and Corrupted Morals. To hear more from Sarchasm, visit their Bandcamp page here: https://sarchasm.bandcamp.com/ To check out Lavasocks Records, visit their online store here: https://lavasocksrecords.storenvy.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. 2020 was a year seemingly concieved in a Stephen King novel. Fascist leadership in the USA, a worldwide pandemic, economic disaster after disaster, did I miss anything? Well, at least the music of the Bobcast was great? Here is my ode to the songs that made 2020 a little more bearable for me and hopefully, you. This is what you’re getting, in order of appearance - The Anti-Queens, Ash Williams, The BellRays, Billy Liar, Black Breath, Danger Inc, Dear Boy, Future Of The Left, Houseghost, Iron Chic, Murder By Death, Nervosa, Parasites, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Sad GirlzClub, Sarchasm, TSOL, Turncoat, War On Women and Wolf-Face!
A “Year In Review” for a year like 2020 was a rough thing to sort out. 2020 sucked. No denying that, right? Well, at least on the Bobcast, 2020 was a great year. Starting out with the conclusion of the Danzig Trilogy and ending with the Paul Tremblay interview, mix in a ton of incredible songs by incredible bands, I can’t complain about 2020 from the podcast point of view. Here’s what you’re getting in this fun-filled episode - Excerpts from the Danzig Series conclusion, the Joe Wood interview, the James Baldwin episode, the Katie Burr interview and the Paul Tremblay interview. A ghost story by Gared O’Donnell of Planes Mistaken For Stars from the very first Bobcast “Ghost Stories” episode. Songs by Lost Avenue, Sarchasm, Le Saboteur, The Bollweevils, Dillinger Four, Get Married and The Hybrids. Sense Field closes this “Best Of…” episode out with a cover of the song “Happy Christmas (War Is Over”. Happy New Year and here’s to a MUCH better year in 2021.
I Wanna Party With Sarchasm! I have kinda sorta done that? Via a show Tiltwheel played with them in December of 2019, a Bobcast interview and trivia contest in early 2020 and several songs that I’ve played on the Bobcast over the last several months. Let’s party a little harder with these fine folks in this episode with a presentation in full of the brand new Sarchasm full length record, “Sarchasm” or “LP4”. What a record this is, lemme tell you. Here’s the track listing - 1. Wither (In D) 2. Scorpio Texas Ranger 3. Us Too 4. Belong 5. I Hate It Here 6. Blacklist 7. Green Hornet 8. When’s My Right Time Kent? 9. Spy Vs. Spy 10. Song To Wash Your Hands To 11. Please Hold 12. Supertramp
Sarchasm, the band, not the attitude. Let’s be clear about that. But wait, are Sarchasm sarcastic? A double positive of a band? Yeah, I would say so. But! Sarchasm are lovely people, every one of them. Even Scout, the Dr. Doolittle of animal noises. Even Stevie, who has a hard time when around free water. Mari? Mari is a monster that can’t eat pizza like a human. Alex can’t listen to music. Which is weird when you’re in a band? Quirks aside, Sarchasm are the nicest, funniest and rocking-est bunch of people from the East Bay. The music, ohhhh the music. So good. Toe tapping, do-si-do-ing, dance til your shoes fall off good. This episode has an interview with Sarchasm, 4 songs by the band and a Simpsons Trivia Challenge!!!! Alex is damn good at Simpsons trivia, by the way. Join the fun, join Team Sarchasm.
Grumpster, Sarchasm and Get Married, oh my! Three of the nicest and bestest bands playing music and doing rad stuff on the DIY punk circuit these days. If this episode was an awards ceremony, here are the awards each band would win - Grumpster - Best Pop Punk of the 21st century. Sarchasm - Nicest People On Earth. Get Married - Most Members For A Non-Ska Band. All the bands on this episode appear on the Asian Man Records release “Friendsplit” and the other thing they have in common? They all bring the ROCK in the best possible way. Short interview questions I did with the band (read by me) and two songs per band is what you’ll find in this episode. Listen.
Podcast #503 is pure Too Much Rock with music from Racetrain, Beach Slang, Big Eyes, Big Baby, Speedways, Rubinoos, Marshall Crenshaw, & Sarchasm.

This week on Episode 95 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #39), Bobby Pickles welcomes Chris Fox (Vampirates,Boss’ Daughter, and four other bands) “in-studio” (straight from Reno, NV via the interwebs) to guest co-host the show. Recorded on Saturday, January 9th 2016, one day prior to post-punk provocateur David Bowie losing his 18-month battle with cancer, this week’s episode should remind us why it’s so important to do what we love. This may be a punk rock podcast, but Bowie paved the way for punks like Laura Jane Grace, only, Bowie’s androgynous, don’t-give-a-fuck persona was propelled in a time when Bruce Gender wasn’t Glamour Magazine’s “Woman of Year”. Another one bites the Stardust. Our thoughts and prayers are also with Long Island musician Rob McCallister, best known as the guitarist for Iron Chic. He passed away on January 10th, as well, from undisclosed causes. He leaves behind a daughter. News of his untimely demise will most probably be overshadowed by the news of Bowie’s. Now, I’m gonna do what I love - I’m gonna podcast. And, in the words of GG - “LIVE FAST DIE!” R.I.P. David Bowie and Rob McAllister With special commentary from Brazilian progressive punk act Malvina, windy Wyoming punkers Shocktroopers, Bay area punk band Sarchasm, and hardcore supergroup World Be Free.
