Happy Satiated Saturday! I've gone out to eat sushi many times. Several years ago, when I had to go to a sushi restaurant for a work meeting, I thought, "Sure, no problem."On this particular afternoon, the restaurant was loud and bustling. I could barely hear anyone down the table, and I was there with people who didn't necessarily put my body at ease. By the end of the meal, I was doubled over in digestive pain. At the time, I didn't want anyone to know how much pain I was in. So, I used the excuse that my then-boyfriend (and now-husband) had texted me and I needed to go home. I went home and immediately got into an epsom salt bath and as an experience of safety returned to my body, the digestive pain dissipated and went away. This was one of those powerful experiences where I deeply felt, this was not about the food. This was about the context in which I was eating the food in.The context surrounding your meals—the environment, emotions, beliefs, nervous system states, and inner narratives—shapes not only what you eat but also how much you eat. Your interactions with food are a reflection of both the world around you and the world within you. Your internal and external landscapes come together shaping the food choices you make.In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Josh Hillis, coach, author, and creator of Eating Skills about: Importance of understanding personal valuesRole of self-determination theoryNecessity of context in making food choicesSignificance of practicing self-awarenessLearning to recognize hunger cues Impact of emotional states on eating behaviorsYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/how-context-and-personal-values-influence-what-you-eatWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Josh: Website: https://joshhillis.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joshuahillis/Book: Lean & StrongSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

This 20 minute acceptance and commitment therapy inspired meditation gives you a healthy way to process emotions. So often, we tend towards avoiding and hoping to eliminate challenging emotions. In this meditation practice, we instead will turn towards our emotions, allow them to be present, begin to understand them and ride out the wave of any actions (urges) they are leading us towards. Taking a mindful approach to processing emotions, as experienced in this meditation, allows us to reflect on what is most important to us and to act in alignment with the values we hold so we can live our most authentic life. The author of No Willpower Required tells me about strategies that worked for him after years of alcohol dependence. (hardenbrook.com/no-willpower-required)The HAPPY BRAIN PODCAST helps you spark your happy brain chemicals in healthy ways. Your host is Loretta G. Breuning PhD, founder of the Inner Mammal Institute and author of "Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels.” Details at: https://innermammalinstitute.org. Check out our new video course, Train Your Inner Mammal to Feel Good Now.(https://innermammalinstitute.org/course — 10% off with the code ReaderDiscount at the checkout.) You will learn to rewire your happy chemicals with small simple steps! Our dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphin are inherited from earlier mammals. We control them with the limbic brain we've inherited from animals. The verbal human part of the brain doesn't understand what makes the animal part feel good, and that's why we do things to feel good that we later regret. When you understand the job that each happy chemical evolved to do, you can find healthy ways to spark them.Dr. Breuning's new book, Why You're Unhappy: Biology vs Politics, shows why unhappiness comes so easily to our brain. Why do they tell us that happiness is the natural state and unhappiness is a disorder? It's politics. The kind of politics that all mammals have. Find out more at: https://innermammalinstitute.org/why See video clips from this episode and others at:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1hyR2RHXp04OmVhFUKNh81FT5gffvplq If you like The Happy Brain Podcast, please rate and review it to help others make peace with their inner mammal. Our happy chemicals evolved to reward survival behavior, not to make you feel good all the time. Your brain chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, which wires you to repeat behaviors that spark good feelings and avoid behaviors that spark bad feelings. That's why we keep repeating or avoiding things without quite knowing why. To change these patterns, you have to blaze a new trail through your jungle of neurons. It's hard because it takes so much repetition. The Inner Mammal Institute shows you how to design and build the new neural pathway that's right for you, and motivate yourself to do the repetitions. Rewiring your brain is like learning a foreign language: we all know it's possible, but most people don't. You can be someone who does! You can build new paths to your happy chemicals so you flow there more easily. The Inner Mammal Institute has the resources you need to do that. It offers free resources, including videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. Dr. Breuning's books explain the big picture and help you plot your course step by step. No matter where you are right now, you can enjoy more happy chemicals in healthy ways. Get the details at https://InnerMammalInstitute.org.

Urge Surfing is an Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Expansion Practice designed to help for when emotions feel too big to carry. Oftentimes our default response to these types of emotions is an urge to avoid, distract, eliminate or control. Acceptance & Commitment Therapy shows us another approach to managing these emotions so we can lean to live with them rather than being in a constant struggle with normal human emotions. Once we become aware of these emotions and the impact they have, we can then decide how we'd like to proceed, instead of being swept away by behaviors which are not serving our values or the life we'd like to be living. Would you believe me if I told you that a world of entirely new possibilities is available if you can learn to ride out those waves? Today we talk with Dr. Luke Sniewski, a somatic therapist trained in Gabor Mate's therapeutic approach, Compassionate Inquiry. Luke trains and mentors other practitioners in this approach and strives to reconnect clients to their bodies so they can listen to and care for themselves, and from this place, leave behind old stories and patterns. Listen in to hear about the relationship between the body and mind in healing, the innate wisdom our bodies hold, how Compassionate Inquiry can help us bridge our past and present experiences, and more! Topics We Discuss: [3:18] Healing the body and mind, which comes first? Depends who you ask, but you can't argue with your body's physiological response to something. For example, how do you feel while following a specific diet, regardless of how someone else says you should feel? Paying attention to our body's cues helps open the door to choosing differently. [9:09] The mind and stress. Our minds react to somatic stressors, such as experiencing anxiety after drinking a lot of coffee. The mind tries to come up with explanations outside of the body to explain the stress and anxiety. If the body is stressed, the mind is too. [13:19] Responding to a thought, whether in a “healthy” way or “unhealthy way”, engrains reactive patterning in our minds. Stillness is the key. Return to your breath. [18:51] Integrating insight in the body. Noticing not only our psychological patterns, but also the way our bodies feel in these patterns gives us another layer of understanding and an opportunity to choose differently for ourselves. Pausing before reacting allows us to make changes. [21:56] Compassionate Inquiry- Gabor Mate's method- bridging the present-day suffering to what happened in childhood. Avoidance, repression, and numbing are the common coping mechanisms developed in childhood. [25:25] Urge surfing. Riding out uncomfortable experiences until they pass, without responding to the experience. Everything eventually passes. We can't fight the wave, but we can learn to surf. [30:14] The body has wisdom the mind doesn't understand. Fever and vomiting are two healing processes of our bodies that feel alarming to our minds. [33:05] Luke's journey as a somatic healer and experience with Compassionate Inquiry. The CI approach calls for the practitioner to see the patient as the expert and remove their own assumptions. It puts you in relationship with the patient's mind and body, which helps the patient see their own mind-body connection. [36:35] Most people are disconnected from their bodies, because this disconnection helped them survive in childhood. One way to get around this is by imagining someone else going through the same situation and how that person must have felt. The goal is to bypass the mind's defenses to connect the patient with their felt experience. [40:58] Someone being present with us without reacting to pain we are experiencing allows us to connect with and move through emotions. Parents often rush to calm their children because they are uncomfortable with their child's emotions instead of just witnessing them. Healing ourselves improves our capacity to be present with others. FOLLOW DR. LUKE SNIEWSKI: Find Dr. Sniewski and his Somawise programs at his website. When you get that urge to binge, do you feel like you just can't fight it and give in very easily? Maybe you've been trying to fight the urge but you still keep on binge eating and it seems that you are a 'slave' to your intense urges? Well in this episode, I discuss the DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) skill of Urge Surfing on how to 'surf' the urge and weaken the urge the more you 'surf' it. ⭐ How I can help you end binge eating:
In this snippet, I interview a Meredith O'Brien, an eating disorder therapist with a lived experience with recovering from anoreixa. In this snippet, Meredith touches on the DBT (Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) skill called Urge surfing. #48 - Meredith's Recovery Journey from Anorexia to Anorexia Recovery Coach with Meredith O'Brien ⭐ How I can help you end binge eating:
before typing this out i sat for a whole five minutes in total silence. it was an accident. i didn’t mean to do it. but i’m realizing i don’t do that enough these days. and that maybe i should do it for longer sometimes. i’m in my bedroom and no one else is home right now. i can hear some quiet bird sounds from outside. i know the highway is only a few hundred feet away but i can’t hear it. there’s a low hum from something. probably the fan in the bathroom? the half bath doesn’t have a window so keeping the fan on in there helps keep it from getting too stuffy. the refrigerator makes sound but it’s mostly easy to tune out. i wonder if my lamp is making a sound right now. i just heard a motorcycle for a second. and now it’s gone.the heater just came on. in 15 seconds the fan will kick in and in another 20 second it’ll reach my bedroom. sound waves move through air. the heat moves through air to my body. i baste in it so my fingers can defrost and so i can finish this message to you. and then i’ll silence my fingers for five minutes.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Kate Davis “Daisy” Trophy03:14 Little Angry “Green Mountain” A Cup of Tea06:51 ratbath “the devil” cold golden boxes09:01 Chris Weisman “Yeah You” Romantics10:22 Friendship “You Might Already Know” Dreamin’14:02 Fern Mayo “Goddess Under Exclusions” Week of Charm17:53 Moor Mother “Passing Of Time” Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes22:05 Ganser “Motivational Speaking” You Must Be New Here26:22 False Advertising “Reading it Wrong” Brainfreeze30:30 Sharks’ Teeth “Face the Grove” Broken Trust in Satan32:44 Romantic States “Mike’s Property” Ballerina36:28 Sarchasm “Deadname” Beach Blanket Bummer Pop39:43 James Kochalka Superstar “Tape Hiss” Eggs40:56 Mono Lisa “Comment Party” Vision Engineering44:22 Joy Cleaner “Bad Advice” You’re So Jaded47:17 Parlor Walls “Spinning Gold” Lunchbox / Spinning Gold50:18 Rachael Dadd “Palaeontologist” FLUX54:38 Yawzea “Slaw” Zoning Demos57:06 Shutups “Almost Won The Lotto” Every Day I’m Less Zen60:10 Dead Little Penny “Out Of Body Experience” Urge Surfing64:01 Squarehead “Maybe” High Time67:46 WOOLWORM “Dogman” Awe69:45 LACKER “HEAVENS” TWO-FACED GAG71:44 thanks for coming “clue” the back of my knee74:29 22 Halo “Big Fire” 22 Halo

Happy Satiated Saturday! When it got to a point where I felt like something needed to change with my patterns of binge eating, one of the steps I took was when I felt the urge to binge I would put on music and move my body. At the time, I was living by myself in a small 1 bedroom apartment. I would put the music up as loud as I needed and move in ways that I probably would not do in front of other people. I would get down on the floor and throw a temper tantrum. I would cry and cry and cry. What I didn't know I was doing at the time was something called urge surfing. In this week's episode, I talk about what urge surfing is, how it can support you in healing patterns of binge eating, and what to do while you're urge surfing. You can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/urgesurfing You never need to be on this adventure alone. Dr. Josh King welcomes you to another episode of The Beyond Addiction Show. Today, Dr. King is accompanied by Dr. Andrew Tatarsky, one of the pioneers of Harm Reduction Therapy and the Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy developer. In this discussion, Dr. King plays the role of “skeptic” to really push Dr. Tatarsky on why Harm Reduction is the way to go over abstinence-only approaches, Dr. Tatarsky also provides some tips and skills on how you can try harm reduction now. Key Takeaways: [2:50] Dr. Tatarsky shares why this is the moment for Harm Reduction Therapy. [5:43] Does Harm Reduction encourage people to keep using substances? [6:52] Dr. Tatarsky explains the meaning of compassionate pragmatism. [9:15] Harm Reduction offers support to anyone who is ready to start a positive change journey. [10:33] Dr. Tatarsky shares the definition of addiction to explain why Harm Reduction is effective even though it doesn't stop the use. [12:52] What happens when we increase suffering for those struggling with substance abuse? [14:03] Dr. Tatarsky talks about the supervised injection sites as safe spaces that saved millions of lives around the world. [16:14] Some people believe that what works in Europe does not necessarily have to work in the U.S. Dr. Tatarsky dives deep into his work around the world. [21:01] Dr. Tatarsky shares some eye-opening statistics. [22:08] What happens when someone goes to a supervised injection site? [24:01] Dr. Tatarsky compares the harm reduction approach to the traditional. [25:33] Submit or rebel? Dr. Tatarsky talks about the consequences of assuming one or the other as a response to traditional treatments for substance abuse. [27:10] Harm Reduction opens a safe place, where people can feel respected and heard. [30:35] Dr. Tatarsky once said “I don't want to see anyone addicted to substances but that doesn't mean that if that is where someone is I can't accept it.” [32:04] Dr. Tatarsky shares an analogy that greatly exemplifies why serving each unique individual is a much better approach than expecting everyone to follow the same path in regard to substance abuse. [34:49] Why is it valuable to meet people where they are? [39:56] Offering alternative strategies is part of the Harm Reduction approach. [40:55] Dr. Josh and Dr. Tatarsky talk about the statistics on the effectiveness of the traditional approach. [44:44] There is no straight line to success. [46:16] We cannot control the people we love, nor our clients or patients. [47:10] Dr. Tatarsky explains what Integrative Harm Reduction Psychotherapy is about. [51:46] Assessment as treatment. [54:11] “Better is better.” [56:07] Treatment trauma is real, some people are ignored when seeking help. [57:42] Dr. Tatarsky shares some specific skills and strategies to empower clients to achieve the changes they want to make in their lives: Urge Surfing, Unwrapping the Urge, Find 18 Alternative Choices, and Game Planning. [1:11:24] Dr. Tatarsky shares why having a plan is crucial. On today's episode, the TITW are teaching the final set of Crisis Survival Distress Tolerance skills covered in Season 1 of the podcast: Distract using "ACCEPTS" and Self-Soothe. Before we get into it, Molly and Liza share how they practiced TIP and Urge Surfing over the last week. No surprise here, but Tipping the Temperature was immediately effective at changing the current moment and creating a new one. Liza points out that Urge Surfing can be used to ride out ineffective urges anywhere - even in the middle of a stressful Zoom call. We then introduce "ACCEPTS," which is an acronym of different ways to distract from life’s current stressors when addressing them head-on either isn't possible or wouldn't be effective in the moment. Using personal examples, we share different ways to distract from pain in the short-term with Activities, Contributing, Comparisons, (opposite) Emotions, Pushing away, Thoughts, and Sensations. Finally, we transition into teaching the Self-Soothe skill, which is about extending comfort to yourself during painful moments by engaging your five senses (vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch). Liza coaches Molly to use this skill in real time, and we share some tricks of the trade, including how to make and keep a "self-soothe kit" on hand at all times - in case of emergency. We hope you enjoy! *Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @TherapistsInTheWild, and Twitter @TherapistsWild. Email us with questions at TherapistsInTheWild@gmail.com.
Kate and Michelle discuss Ride the Wave, otherwise known as urge-surfing. They each share their personal experiences with this skill and effective strategies that can help when using it. TRIGGER WARNING: Material that may be triggering is discussed from 32:21-35:40. There are also brief references to self-harm throughout the episode. If there was ever a time to practice Distress Tolerance skills, it is now! Liza and Molly recorded this episode on election night, when they needed *all* the skills. After a quick review of the STOP skill, you will learn the skill of Urge Surfing, which is a mindfulness technique that helps you surf urges to engage in ineffective behaviors instead of acting on them, using your breath as your surfboard. After teaching the skill, Molly leads you through a guided Urge Surfing exercise, to help you put this skill into practice. Next, Liza and Molly introduce the TIP skills -- a TITW and DBT-fan favorite. The TIP skills include, 1) Tip the Temperature, 2) Intense Exercise, 3) Paced Breathing, and 4) Paired Muscle Relaxation. Molly and Liza practice Tipping the Temperature live on air, and Molly hilariously dunks her entire face in a bowl of cold water to help demonstrate how well this skill works. Finally, Liza leads you through a guided Paired Muscle Relaxation practice so you can relieve any remaining tension in your body before ending the episode. We hope you enjoy! *To see visual demonstrations of the TIP skills, we recommend you check out the DBT-RU YouTube Page: https://www.youtube.com/c/DBTRU/videos *Follow TITW on Instagram and Facebook @ TherapistsInTheWild, and Twitter @TherapistsWild. Happy Satiated Saturday! With my Satiated Podcast, I’m striving to break things down into manageable bite-sized action steps. I found on my journey of cultivating a more peaceful and accepting relationship with food and body that there were a lot of different guidance and suggestions. The bombardment of suggestions often left me with more questions of where do I begin and what steps do I need to take? In this episode, I’m so excited to share a personal story of a defining moment that altered my relationship with food. We will dive into how when changing any pattern with food, there can be a grieving process that needs to occur. Do you struggle with the urge to eat when you aren't hungry? Urge Surfing is a way of being with those urges without acting on them or resisting them. In last week’s episode, I introduced the practice of urge surfing. Managing those urges to eat is a key skill to have in your tool kit if you want to eat what you love and lose weight without dieting. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, make sure you do before listening to this one. Urge surfing is a great way to allow you to choose behaviors that bring you towards what you really want in life, rather than indulging in fleeting immediate gratification. This week’s episode is a guided urge surfing meditation. Download this episode and use it when you have the urge to eat but aren’t hungry. Do this in a comfortable place where you can relax. And don’t forget to grab the Think Sheet for this episode that will walk you through the urge surfing process.
Do you get the urge to eat out of habit? Like munching crunchy snacks while watching TV? Or eating your kid’s leftovers when you aren’t hungry? Or maybe you grab candy out of a candy bowl as you walk by. If you’ve struggled with your weight, chances are that you’ve been indulging your urges to eat when you aren’t hungry. And when you eat but aren’t hungry, your body stores that energy as fat. You keep gaining weight. Or you can't lose it. I’m excited to introduce a great mindfulness tool that can help you deal with those urges! It’s called “urge surfing.” The great mindfulness teacher Jon Kabat-Zinn very wisely said, “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” Life is full of waves, and learning how to surf them can help you manage your urges and lose the weight for good. It’s not about resistance. If you’ve watched Star Trek, you know that “Resistance is Futile.” When it comes to urges, resistance is not only futile, but it can actually makes your urges worse. Listen to learn about how urges work and how you can successfully surf them!
Today in Episode 2, we’re going to explore what almost every human being can benefit from, the power of urge surfing. Can you recall a time when you gave in to an urge that you had, resulting in you doing something that wasn’t in your best interest? We’re going to explore this, and Reuben will guide you through an experiential exercise that we hope will help you for similar encounters in the future.
Dr. Jennifer Taitz, clinical psychologist and author of the audiobook “End Emotional Eating,” offers a four step process to help you learn how to handle urges of any kind, followed by an exercise to help you “urge surf,” to minimize the amount of self-control you need.
