In advance of their show at Cobra Lounge on Sunday, 2/21, I’m joined by members of the Effigies and the Evictions at Cobra! Paul, Steve, and Andy from the Effigies and Johnny from the Evictions jumped in the car to preview the show and talk about the long history of Chicago music and punk. We also were treated to new items from Cobra’s pizza menu, thanks to Chef Jason: Dragged Through the Garden - poppy seed crust, sliced hot dogs, onion, sport peppers, dill pickles, green relish, mustard and celery salt Louie’s Pizza - Pepperoni, giardiniera, and calabrian chili oil Both pizzas were spectacular, but I think the hot dog pizza was really something extra special. See you at Cobra on Saturday! Apologies for not also having the Bollweevils on this episode - looks like I’ll have to have Daryl on again soon. Cobra Lounge (235 N. Ray Russell in conversation with David Eastaugh http://tartaruspress.com/ray/fifty-forgotten-records.html Ray Russell was not at the crossroads when Robert Johnson met the devil, and he didn't see Elvis Presley perform live. He wasn't at Woodstock, or Altamont, or on the roof of the Apple Building. To his enduring frustration, he didn't get to see The Sex Pistols in Manchester at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976, because he was only ten years old. There will be many others who are just as passionate about music as Russell, who also failed to be in the audience at seminal moments in music history. But, like him, they own records that mean the world to them, and have seen bands play who blew them away. The point is, we all treasure our own personal musical histories because they enrich our lives. This book is a celebration of being a committed music fan. He formed a band at seventeen and discovered he couldn't sing. Close friends released a record which used his lyrics, but John Peel played another of their songs. He ran a record label for a month, worked in a record shop and has released a few records of his own music.
As I head toward the end of my appendectomy/ileocectomy recovery, I jump back into podcasting with an obvious guest: Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils. Who better to talk through the past 2 ½ months of medical madness than a celebrated ER doctor with decades of experience? We talk through my experiences, from the moment my appendix burst through my current recovery, all discussed with a requisite amount of dark humor (and insight). If you ever wanted to know what the most vomit-inducing experience was during this period, we don't hold back (spoiler: the colonoscopy doesn't even come close). After Daryl "clears me" to return to podcasting and we put a bow on my appendix era, we get into Daryl's new band, Pressure Set. It's surprising, brand new, and something you'll want to look out for in 2026. And don't forget the Bollweevils: They have big plans for '26, as well. I'm grateful to have a friend like Daryl, and I think after listening to this episode Daryl will feel like a friend of yours, as well. So yeah… I'm back. As Daryl says in the episode, I'm "big back." Thank you for your support, positive vibes, and kind words. Let's have fun this year. -JVO ### Let's talk about merch. Mark Johnson in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLE9mfb6eZU https://dontsleepdream.bandcamp.com/album/life-is-just-a-ride Although first formed in 1985, The Bollweevils did not come together properly as a live act until 1988. The first full line-up included Sarah Griffiths (vocals), Mark Johnson (lead guitar), Steve McKevitt (bass guitar), Dave Lloyd (rhythm guitar) and Chris Coyle (drums). From their first gig The Bollweevils received favourable reviews. However, it was not until late in 1989 that the band signed a recording contract with the Vinyl Solution. In March 1990, their first single was released on the Decoy label, the self produced and critically well-received four track Talk To Me EP. ABC's Stephen Singleton agreed to help record the second single, but it was not finished until 1991 and neither the band nor the record company were happy with the results. The tracks were re-mixed in June with the punk/dance producer Alan Scott, but the Life's A Scream EP was never released in that form.
The Dollar Bin hosts Alan Brostoff (Dr. Disc of Record Store Recon) and Rev (singer of The Drowns) invite huge record collector, The Bollweevils' frontman Dr. Daryl Wilson, on the podcast. Wilson talks about how record collecting (and collecting in general) influenced his own passion for music and life. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Whatever stormed through the ‘90s and early 2000s with a relentless barrage of punk rock anthems fueled by disillusionment, isolation, and raw fury. Now, nearly 25 years later, original members Ben Wrecked (vocals/guitar)and Matt Fish (drums) are back, louder and sharper than ever, joined by Brett Moore (guitar) and Peter Woodward (bass/vocals) to resurrect one of the Midwest's most fierce punk acts. Their latest album, Into Darker Days, marks the band's first full-length release since 1997's Youngsters (DSR 69), delivering 12 new tracks that hit with the same melodic urgency and unapologetic edge fans have always loved. Leaning into the existential unrest of today's world, Whatever channels decades of frustration into a sound that's both familiar and freshly ferocious. This isn't a reunion. It's a reckoning.Check this one out, and don't miss them on tour!September 18, 2025Marky Ramone plays the Ramones and Whatever...Beachland BallroomCleveland, OHhttps://app.opendate.io/e/marky-ramone-plays-the-ramones-september-19-2025-598040October 18, 2025Whatever... and The GluttonsFive O'Clock LoungeLakewood, OHOctober 22, 2025Decry, Whatever.., The Situations, and Future ConfusionThe RedwoodLos Angeles, CAOctober 23, 2025Rhythm Collision, Whatever..., For Closure, and The Heart RaceThe SardineSan Pedro, CAOctober 24, 2025Dr. Strange Records Freaky FridayThe Radolescents, The Bollweevils, Whatever..., Rhythm Collision, and The MaxiesThe GlasshousePomona, CAhttps://dice.fm/event/nvbgq9-dr-strange-37th-with-radolescents-the-bollweevils-24th-oct-the-glass-house-pomona-tickets?pid=a1331df1&_branch_match_id=1475983283770168345&utm_medium=partners_api&_branch_referrer=H4sIAAAAAAAAA8soKSkottLXz8nMy9ZLyUxO1UvL1a9ITTI1TE02MTZLMbUvyEyxTTQ0NjZMSTNUqytKTUstKsrMS49PKsovL04tsg1OTEssygQAK4FHYkgAAAA%3DThis episode, like all episodes of If This Is True, brings forth what drives creatives to do what they do. This one is arguably best enjoyed in its video form (YouTube/Facebook). Over another delicious dinner from Byron's (1701 West Lawrence), I'm joined by hypnotist Chris Jones and returning favorites Dr. Daryl Wilson (the Bollweevils) and Stubhy (Lucky Boys Confusion). Chris is performing at Zanies (Wells) on 3/18 and Zanies (Rosemont) on 3/30. As a preview of his shows, he convinces Daryl and Stubhy to try and get hypnotized on camera/mic! This was definitely a first for the podcast. If you're curious, definitely see what Chris is all about when he's at Zanies in March! (Special shout-out to Chris's videographer Calvin, who got tucked all the way in the back of the car and only briefly seen and heard during the episode.) Welcome to the second part of the three-volume Episode 1000 anniversary episode, recorded at live events held at four locations throughout the greater Chicagoland area. My original idea was to combine all the interviews and performances into one single release. As fate would have it… it's just too much content for one single episode, so I decided to break it up and make it more digestible. For this episode, recorded at Skeleton Key Brewery in Woodridge, Siren Records in McHenry, and Liar's Club in Chicago, you'll hear (and see): Theme song creator Josh Caterer from Liar's Club. An interview with returning favorites wht.rbbt.obj from Siren Records. Comedian Mike Stricker with a comedy set from Skeleton Key. Herb Rosen, owner of Liar's Club. A blistering performance and fun interview with Bellhead from Liar's Club. And a rock and roll story from author Steve Silver. In between segments, you'll also get to enjoy messages from former podcast guests, sharing their Episode 1000 greetings. This time around, that includes Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils, Sincere Engineer, Todd Sucherman of Styx, Take the Reins and award-winning journalist Charlie Meyerson. ## CCC is sponsored by Easy Automation. Red Scare Industries celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The new compilation, "20 Years of Dreaming and Scheming," includes contributions from Laura Jane Grace, Sludgeworth, the Brokedowns, the Falcon, Won't Stay Dead and the Bollweevils. I'm out of the car for this one … Toby Jeg and Brendan Kelly of Red Scare joined me at the Q101 studios in downtown Chicago for this recording. I mean, if I'm going to have a partnership with Q101, I may as well take advantage and use their facilities. We talk about the turbulent music business, and how Red Scare has managed to endure well into the 21st century. We get into discussing some of the tracks on "20 Years of Dreaming and Scheming," and dive into topics like Fernet, Jon Bon Jovi and Toby's favorite stage banterist. I wrap the conversation by sharing an audio clip of an interview I did with Brendan in … 2002! Our voices both sound pitched up, but … that's just how we sounded 22 years ago. Every now and then, I do an interview that feels less like an interview and more like a casual conversation that just happens to have been captured on microphone. This is one of them. ## DON'T FORGET: Thursday, 9/26/24 Skeleton Key in Woodridge CAR CON CARNE EPISODE 1000 Featuring AM Taxi, Ooozin' Ahhhs, the Black and Blue Hearts, Mike Stricker DJ sets 7pm FREE TO ATTEND ## Car Con Carne is sponsored by Easy Automation. Violet, Saffron and Tyler from horror pop-punk band Won't Stay Dead join me for food and adult beverages at DryHop Brewers (3155 N. Broadway). As we eat delicious DryHop menu items like the DryHop Double Smash Burger, Fried Pickles and the Marinara Pizza, we also enjoy DryHop beers (the beauty of recording outside the car). I had the seasonal Wolpertinger (festbier), and Saffron enjoyed Peaches Peaches Peaches. Since Won't Stay Dead is a horror-themed band, we talked about all the seasonal things, from candy corn to Wes Craven, Rob Zombie to the Driller Killer. See Won't Stay Dead as part of Red Scare's 20th anniversary celebration: They're playing at Beat Kitchen on Friday the 13th (naturally) with The Bollweevils, The Brokedowns and Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds. Today we begin our discussion with the man that brought us GAMEFACE, FACE TO FACE, BROWN LOBSTER TANK, THE BOLLWEEVILS, ZOINKS and MORE... Bill Plaster of Dr. Strange Records! He talks about about getting into punk/new wave music, starting the label with some advice from Ian MacKaye, and doing it all before the internet existed! The Bollweevils is a punk band from Chicago. They formed during the Naked Raygun era which was where the band members met and also, for whom they eventually opened. The group released a number of albums on Dr. Strange Records; though, their first, minor releases were on Underdog Records (Chicago). The group's current record label, Go Deaf Records LLC, is owned and operated by the band. The Bollweevils released a new album, "Essential," on Red Scare Industries in 2023. It was their first album release in 14 years. These guys have come up a lot in interviews so I thought it would be awesome to talk to Daryl, he agreed, and this is what we chat about: Playing with the Adolescents Making the newer version of Bottomless Pit Naked Raygun Getting on Dr Strange face to face Never playing the Metro again Getting kicked off Riot Fest The ABC7 appearance Why the latest record isn't on Dr. Strange And a ton more Feel free to support the podcast for as little as $1 a month through Patreon
Dr Strange Records is not a "company" or "corporation" making money off punk rock. Bill Strange has been into punk since 1980 and it is truly a way of life for him. Bill started Dr. Strange Records in 1988 in an effort for like-minded people to get rare punk records for FAIR prices. His "hobby" not only turned into the biggest mail-order for punk in all the world, but also a record label (in 1989) and a store in California (opened in 1997). Some releases from the label that you may remember are from such bands as Guttermouth, The Bollweevils, Rhythm Collision, face to face, Man Dingo, Schleprock, Brown Lobster Tank, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Gameface, Skankin Pickle and many more. I've been trying since Feb 2020 to make this happen and I am very happy that it finally came to fruition. I got Bill on the Skype and this is what we chat about: The 35 year reunion show How he started the mail order His thoughts on Guttermouth How he started the label His clientele at the record store face to face What happened to the Bullshoviks EP How the record store happened Skankin Pickle Voodoo Glow Skulls And a ton more Go follow their IG account and check out his Weds & Fri Instagram and Facebook LIVE at 4pm where he hosts a sort of QVC for records Link to their website - https://drstrange.com/ Check out my friend Jess Price's new instagram where she creates the letters of your kids names out of animals. Sunday, January 14 in the Chicago area was, by all accounts, miserable. The windchill dipped well below zero and it was the kind of day where no one wanted to leave the warmth of their home. I had a rescheduled podcast interview planned for the afternoon; so, weather be damned, I was going to make the trip to the west suburbs to get it done. Unfortunately, my guest forgot about the rescheduled date (after he had to cancel the previous one due to weather). That left me cold and bitter with a car set up for a podcast interview. I didn't want to shut everything down and call it a day; instead, I called my friend Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils, who happened to live 10 minutes from the interview location. Discussed in our unplanned and impromptu chat: *Daryl's recent appearance on NBC-5 to talk about staying safe in the weather. *I got a battery-powered snowblower. *2023: Great year for the Bollweevils *The band is recording a new song this month! *Daryl's creative process *Screen time and youths *Influencer culture *Banana bread Car Con Carne is presented by Alex Ross Art. Welcome to Episode 900, presented by Alex Ross Art. For this landmark moment, I hosted a roundtable of friends at Epic Deli (2616 Schaid Ct, McHenry, IL): Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer, Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes, Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils and Tom Higgenson of Plain White Ts. As we eat each others' signature sandwiches (an idea that came from Josh Caterer), we talk at length about food and music. No questions or topics were prepared for this episode… this is simply an honest, authentic chat with some of Chicago's most revered music makers. Thanks to Tom, Daryl, Josh and Deanna for joining me. Thanks also to Tyler and the team at Epic Deli for the hospitality. Video footage captured, edited and produced by Zach Spangler. With the Naked Raygun tribute album, “Godspeed,” coming out on 7/28, I thought I'd ask a few friends/"Godspeed" contributors to answer the question, “Why Naked Raygun?” The ad hoc panel includes Steev from Death and Memphis, Pete Mittler from the Methadones and Bollweevils and returning favorite Dr. Daryl Wilson of Bollweevils. Naked Raygun is one of the greatest bands to ever “whoa whoa” their way onto a Chicago stage, and their influence continues to loom large on the generations that follow in their footsteps. With that, a new Raygun tribute compilation is on the way: “Godspeed… A Tribute to Pierre Kezdy.” Scheduled for release on July 28, the album features NR covers from the likes of Face to Face, and J. Robbins. Also featured on the comp are a “who's who” of former Car Con Carne guests, including Josh Caterer, Pegboy, the Bollweevils, the Methadones, the Brokedowns and Death and Memphis. All proceeds from the project go to the family of Pierre Kezdy, who passed away in 2020. The guys behind the compilation, Curt Harrison (the Usuals) and Pat Mineau (Grey Trash Aliens), jumped in the car to talk about putting the project together, as well as the impact of Naked Raygun's music. Oh, and there's food in this episode … wonderful food from the recently-opened Rogue's Corner in Elgin (109 E. Highland). Owner Matt Habib shared a handful of his pizza originals, including Pipe n Wrench (Italian beef, sausage, giardiniera) and Jury Rig (Mac & Cheese + Sloppy Joe). Matt was also comfortable and happy to offer his thoughts on Naked Raygun; he's a fan just like the rest of us. Naked Raygun will do a rare signing event at Rogue's Corner on August 26 at 1 p.m., where they'll sign “Godspeed” records and merch. ### Car Con Carne is proud to be sponsored by Alex Ross Art (alexrossart.com). When you hear 90's punk bands from Chicago talk about their inspirations, The Bollweevils are almost always mentioned in some capacity. After 14+ years of not releasing music, The Bollweevils are back in action, with the record Essential coming out in May on Red Scare. Before talking about the new music, we jumped in a time machine and discussed being on Dr. Strange before Red Scare and the bands that were on the label - a list that includes Face to Face and 7 Seconds. Dr. Dr. Daryl Wilson was passionate about being on Dr. Strange, and has the same feelings towards Red Scare, calling them the band's ride or die. There was a lot of history in this episode. It was mostly the history of punk so if you like hearing about bands who paved the way for punk music - then this is the interview for you. But, we also deeply discussed his passion for comics and how frequent he is picking up new releases. Wilson got accepted into medical school and eventually had to start a residency. It was a big reason why he stepped away from the band for an extended time period and didn't tour with the band. He's now an emergency room doctor and has a ton of experience in the medical field under his belt. There is no better opportunity to put a big focus on the band again and see where it goes. The band released the new record on May 5 and have since hit the road. We talked about the new songs and how everything came together again. There was also a discussion about involvement in punk and there has been growth over the years.

Daryl Wilson is the lead singer of the seminal Chicago punk band The Bollweevils. Formed in 1989, the group has released many records and been through many iterations over the decades, but as Daryl shares in this interview with Features Department Co-Director Mick R, their latest album Essential is the best that the band has ever sounded. Tune in to hear how the record came together over the course of more than a decade, the band's awesome relationship with local punk label Red Scare, and why they'll never change their style. "It's our coming out party, to say 'Here's The Bollweevils!' ... it epitomizes how far we've come... and you can hear it now in how it sounds, better than before." - Daryl Wilson, discussing the decision to re-record thier classic song "Bottomless Pit" for their new record Essential. Essential is out on Red Scare. The Bollweevils will be playing a record release show with the Brokedowns on 5/27 at the Chop Shop. Produced by Mick R. Image Credit: Paul Catani

Sarah Griffiths - The Bollweevils, Sarah Griffiths & Duck - in conversation with David Eastaugh From their first gig The Bollweevils received favourable reviews. However, it was not until late in 1989 that the band signed a recording contract with the independent record label, Vinyl Solution. In March 1990, their first single was released on the Decoy label, the self produced and critically well-received four track Talk To Me EP. A Bollweevils compilation CD, Life's A Scream, was released in Japan in 1992, on the Toy's Factory label. It contained all the tracks from the first three recorded EPs.
