In this episode, Rex and Duff are tracking the pulse of modern metal. We start with a deep dive into the absolute best of the newest releases, breaking down the crushing weight of Immolation's Descent and the relentless thrash energy of Nervosa's Slave Machine. Then, the stakes get high as we kick off a new set of "King of the Mountain." We're putting our personal favorites on the line to see which tracks and live experiences can hold the peak. This leads us into a celebration of the masters of the stage: GWAR and Iron Maiden. We're discussing the chaos of GWAR's "Gor-Gor Strikes Back" tour and the massive, career-spanning energy of Maiden's "Run For Your Lives" world tour as well as why we love some of our favorite tracks by both bands.

Peter watches Mad Max: Fury Road for the first time in decades, and Eden — who has seen it at least a dozen times — watches the black-and-chrome edition alongside him. Peter finds the opening act almost too uncomfortable to watch, given its uncomfortable parallels to the current political moment, but gets fully on board the moment the sandstorm hits. They dig into what makes the film a masterpiece of practical filmmaking, why Furiosa holds up better than the prequel, and what it means that George Miller also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet.SHOW NOTESCheck-in / What we've been up to — Eden is riding their cargo bike in 35mph Iowa wind gusts; Peter is heading to Austin for an Intuitive Surgical robotics event. Eden vents about 18 months of accessibility compliance work being ignored by faculty who don't read their emails.Peter's picks — Finishing Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 6 (fun but disposable, and the online fandom's intensity baffles him); finished Season 2 of A Man on the Inside (Ted Danson and his real-life wife Mary Steenburgen falling for each other on screen — highly recommended); Taskmaster Series 21 has started, featuring Kumail Nanjiani. Big metal week — Peter covers a stack of new releases: Slave Machine by Nervosa (vicious all-female death-thrash from Brazil); Too Fast to Die by ArchSpire (potential album of the year if not for Neurosis); new Inferi album featuring departing drummer Spencer Moore; Descent by Immolation; and Master Boot Record's first live album Realtime Execution. Eden's picks — Eden is scrobbling again on Last.fm and shares a chaotic top-four week: Portishead, Rebecca Black (Salvation EP praised as a stone-cold classic), Neurosis, and new discovery Javiera Mena, a Chilean electro-pop artist. Also watched two bad movies with the bad movie crew: Firecracker (notable for a truly unhinged sex scene) and American Cyborg: Steel Warrior ("Children of Men with a $13 budget"). Currently reading a 3,500-page Chinese web novel called Long Awaited Feelings / My Feelings Can Wait. Why Peter struggled with the opening act — Peter found Immortan Joe's cult of worship uncomfortably familiar, given current events, describing it as George Miller predicting how "stupid and gullible people can be." He warmed to the film as it progressed, with the sandstorm sequence being the turning point."A perfect action film" — Eden's framing: not their favorite action film, but possibly a perfect one — no wasted frame, no wasted scene. They've seen it at least a dozen times, and this watch was the black-and-chrome edition, which Miller originally intended before the studio overruled him.Practical effects deep dive — 80–90% of the stunts were practical, shot on location in Namibia under miserable conditions. They highlight the pole-cat war boys actually swinging on moving vehicles, and the real flamethrower guitarist who was instructed not to hold the guitar too high.On the cast — Charlize Theron gets full credit for owning the film as Furiosa. Tom Hardy's near-silent, physically understated performance is praised. Nicholas Hoult's arc as Nux — going from zealot to sacrifice — is called out as the emotional hinge of the film.Frame rate trivia — Eden flags that 50–60% of the film was shot below 24fps, with Miller manipulating frame rates shot-by-shot to control tension and legibility.Furiosa comparison — Eden recommends the prequel but notes its heavy CGI and green screen make it feel cheaper and less embodied than Fury Road. Peter says he's now interested to watch it.The Babe 2 revelation — The episode ends on Eden's genuine disbelief that the director of Fury Road also made Babe: Pig in the City and Happy Feet, and a fun piece of trivia: Immortan Joe's actor, Hugh Keays-Byrne, also played Toecutter, the villain of the original Mad Max.

Nervosa, the Brazilian modern thrash and death metal, are back with their sixth album, ‘Slave Machine', out April 3rd, 2026, via Napalm Records. It's time to thrash… but with a fresh twist! Nervosa are back, settled (thanks to founding guitarist Prika Amaral establishing herself as the vocalist with 2023's Jailbreak), and in a riotous mood. Delivering an album that expertly blends old-school thrashy ferocity with modern death-infused technicality and anthemic focus. The result is a beast of a record, featuring a manic set of tracks that go varying degrees of hard.

Pipeman has an amazing interview with the band Gravewitch and discuss their music and philosophies on Blackened Thrash Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, and metal music genres in general. Great interview. Don't miss it!Social Media Links: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/gravewitch/photos Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gravewitchofficialBandcamp: https://gravewitchofficial.bandcamp.com/album/gravewitchBand Bio: Bend, Oregon — 2013. Chris Fleming and Andrew Ingraham first raised the banners of Gravewitch in the heart of Oregon's shadowed high desert; the world of blackened thrash metal wasn't exactly waiting for them—but it should've been. Their unholy alliance would go on to carve a jagged path through a decade of turmoil, triumph, and relentless performance, delivering a brutal fusion of thrash, black, death, and melodic metal that strikes with the fury of an avalanche and the cold precision of a blade through bone. From the very beginning, Gravewitch—born as a two-piece with Fleming on guitar/vocals and Ingraham on drums—laid the foundation for something far darker than their humble beginnings suggested. Their sound, a storm of buzzing riffs, blast beats, and unyielding growls, evolved with each release and performance, folding in elements from legends like Kreator, Testament, Amon Amarth, Emperor, and Vader. The chemistry between the founding duo is undeniable. The music, like the band itself, is unrelenting—a blend of old-school thrash's speed and aggression, black metal's cold, atmospheric darkness, and the weight of death metal's hammer. Fleming's lyrics are just as aggressive, each track an exploration of battle, rebellion, and darkness, all delivered with a razor-sharp edge. Gravewitch has long been a fixture on the road, expanding their reach with every tour. In 2017, they booked their own West Coast tour hitting California, hitting Arizona, & circling back through Southern California, through Northern California, & into Oregon. Later in 2017, they embarked on a much larger tour supporting Voltumna, a blackened death metal band from Italy, on the “Itinere Inferi West Coast Tour.” Their unrelenting performances took them across a wide swath of the U.S, carving a permanent mark in the underground metal scene. On the Rise Gravewitch's first EP, Soul Reaper, released in 2015, was the spark that set it all off, laying the foundation for their towering presence in the scene. Their debut full-length, The Summoning (2020), marked a defining moment in their sound, blending the harsh precision of black metal with the thundering force of thrash. Tracks like “Circle of Power” became staples of their live shows, songs that encapsulate the very soul of Gravewitch: fast, dark, melodic, and utterly crushing.Through the years, they've stood tall alongside legendary acts, opening for the likes of Warbringer, Flotsam and Jetsam, and Goatwhore. Their performances are nothing short of ferocious, a raw assault on the senses that leaves crowds battered, bruised, and begging for more. Whether playing in packed venues like The Domino Room or under the stars at The Capitol in Bend, they know no other way but to play with the intensity of a band determined to rise above.Unyielding and UncompromisingEven so, the band's journey has always been defined by their refusal to conform. Never signing with a major label, Gravewitch has remained fiercely independent, upholding complete creative control over their music. From the start, they've chosen the DIY path, with Chris Fleming handling the bulk of the instrumentation on their releases, ensuring that every riff, every growl, and every pounding drumbeat aligns with their unrelenting vision. This independence has been the bedrock of their identity, allowing them to remain true to their sound and uncompromising in their approach. As they gear up for their second full-length album, Gravewitch (2025), the anticipation grows. It promises to be the most ambitious record yet, one that will no doubt expand on their unique fusion of blackened thrash with all the melodic and guttural elements fans have come to expect. "Circle of Power," their anthemic fan favorite, serves as a testament to their unyielding spirit, always present in their setlists, a grim declaration of their musical fire.A Decade of Relentless GrindGravewitch's rise through the ranks of the Pacific Northwest's underground metal scene has been marked by a slew of impressive performances and accomplishments. Rivalries don't just crown winners; they expose identities. We kick off with Ohio State's statement over Michigan, tracing the arc from an early gut-punch to a slow, ruthless squeeze built on line-of-scrimmage control. An 18-play, 11-minute drive becomes the thesis: fewer snaps, higher efficiency, and a defense that turns games into long exhales. We walk through Julius Sayin's composure after a pick, Bo Jackson running angry with purpose, and receivers winning on leverage when it mattered most. Then we zoom out—why common-opponent comparisons mislead, how tempo inflates perceptions, and when a team should speed up vs. double down on its identity. The spectacle didn't end at the whistle. Brutus crossing out the block M turned into instant lore, reminding us that rivalry week is part chess, part theater. We separate playful mascot mischief from true disrespect, and we call balls and strikes on media noise—from Dave Portnoy's performative meltdown to Pat McAfee's showman's pick that actually respected the football. It's sports as culture clash, the joy of a fan base exhaling after years, and a nod to the details that make November feel larger than life.To celebrate our 200th, we turn the amps up. We highlight a local standout in Heartstomper, then relive a night with Spiritbox and Periphery—tight sets, heavy grooves, and the kind of live energy that sticks to your ribs. We talk the realities of ticket prices, festival fatigue, and smarter ways to enjoy shows without roasting in a field. Finally, we dive into female-fronted metal—Nervosa, Arch Enemy lineage notes, Crypta's menace—and why these bands deserve more space in your rotation. If you're here for football or for riffs, you'll leave with both.If you loved this, hit follow, share it with a friend who needs better game takes and heavier playlists, and drop a review with your favorite play or track from the show. This week on America's Podcast, we're diving into the darker side of music with our guest Kevin Tarrant, as we review an all-female trash metal band from Brazil, Nervosa, and their album "Jailbreak." Will Marc be a fan of their vocal style, or will it hit a sour note? No spoilers here, folks! Now, onto the tracks of the week! Kevin kicks things off with "Believer" by Ozzy Osbourne, a classic choice for those who like their music with a side of darkness. Mooger follows up with "Eyes Wide Open" by Kittie, a tune that will have you rocking out with your claws out. And finally, Marc wraps things up with "Walk" by Pantera, a song that's sure to get your head banging and your neighbors complaining. So, until next week, keep an eye out for evil, and remember to rock on! #nervosa #jailbreak #musicpodcast
