Další plnotučná epizoda podcastové revue Noty Vole nemohla začít jinak. Festival Rock for People odhalil své trumfy pro příští rok. A my jsme dopodrobna rozebrali, co na současné festivalové mapě znamená příjezd Linkin Park. A také se všichni (tedy krom pana Sága) dozvíte, kdo bude skutečný headliner!  Prolistujeme listopadový Headliner a doporučíme vám z něj super články. Vrátíme se ke konferenci a hudebnímu setkání Prague Music Week. A pak už tozačne nabírat grády. Franka Turnera, Billyho Woodse a Moor Mother, Miles Kanea i Mylese Kennedyho. Poslední koncert skvělých Met. I závěr největšího českého turné roku.

Meshell Ndegeocello with David Harrington (Kronos Quartet)

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we're diving deep into a chat inspired by two tribute albums to an incredibly influential musician, Sun Ra. Joining us are Meshell Ndegeocello and David Harrington. And oh man, do I have my work cut out for me in trying to introduce these incredible people and their careers—I won't even scratch the surface. Meshell Ndegeocello's biggest foray into the public consciousness, strangely enough, came on a duet with John Mellencamp in the mid-'90s, but that's not at all indicative of her wide-ranging career, which also includes everything from go-go music to neo-soul to jazz to rapping on a Madonna song. These days, the Grammys had to create an entirely new category for what she does: She just won the first-ever Grammy award for Alternative Jazz for last year's The Omnichord Real Book. It's no surprise given her musical serachings that Ndegeocello is also deeply inspired by Sun Ra, the legendary out-there jazz composer and performer who traveled through time and space until leaving our planet in 1993. His legacy lives on, though, and Ndegeocello recently released Red Hot & Ra: The Magic City, which features new compositions, old sounds, and a fresh look not just at Ra's work but his musical spirit. It's hard to explain, but check out “Bedlam Blues” from The Magic City right here. Today's other guest is David Harrington, founding member of Kronos Quartet, which has been expanding the music world for 50 years. I'd be a fool to try and sum up everything they've done and everyone with whom they've performed over the years, but do yourself a favor and Google them if you're not familiar. I'll just say that Kronos has pushed the envelope from just about every conceivable angle and expanded the scope and understanding of classical music, pop music, experimental music and much more. They've done film scores that you've definitely heard and deep dives into fringe classical compositions that you almost certainly haven't. So it's no wonder that they, too, like Ndegeocello, have found the wonder and mystery in Sun Ra's music, and that they've put together their own tribute in the Red Hot and Ra series. Theirs is called Outer Spaceways Incorporated: Kronos Quartet and Friends Meet Sun Ra. The friends on their volume of the series include Laurie Anderson, Marshall Allen, Laraaji, Moor Mother, Terry Riley, and more. Check out “Outer Spaceways Incorporated,” which features Georgia Anne Muldrow, right here. I should mention too that both of these albums are being released by the Red Hot organization, which has been raising money and awareness for good causes—initially AIDS research, and now that and more—since 1989. The Red Hot and Ra series is just the latest in a long line of albums that push musical boundaries while also serving humanity, so kudos to them—and to former Talkhouse host Elia Einhorn, who's been working with the Red Hot folks on these Sun Ra tributes. In this great conversation, Harrington and Ndegeocello talk, naturally, about Sun Ra, and they get granular with it, touching on MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech and its relationship to this music. They also chat about bringing more women into composition—a Kronos mandate since the beginning—as well as how finding Sun Ra changed Ndegeocello's musical path completely. Harrington also shares a great story about rehearsing with Ornette Coleman. Bonus! Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Meshell Ndegeocello and David Harrington for chatting. The approaching end of the spring semester at the University of Oklahoma signals the coming of an annual tradition in the college town, Norman Music Festival. Over the years, NMF has become the state's premier music festival for independent and up-and-coming bands, with several big national names sprinkled across its history of lineups. It is also the biggest in-state platform for many talented Oklahoma-based musicians. This year's festival is once again free for all, running from April 25-27, and features headliners like Alvvays, Moor Mother, Husbands, and more. To help set the stage for the event, the Oklahoma Today Podcast welcomes guests Shari Jackson, Desiree Yearby, and Evan Jarvicks to talk the names they're excited to see, the work that goes into putting on such a big annual event, and tips for newcomers. Also on the show, the editors discuss a hit Question of the Week prompt: What Oklahoma small town could also be a good band name? And podvents take us out to where the red fern grows. We hope you enjoy!

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on Transmissions: Camae Ayewa, better known as Moor Mother. As one-half of the Black Quantum Futurism collective, a creative project she founded with Rasheedah Philips, Ayewa has focused her considerable energies on “the manipulation of space-time in order to see into possible futures, and/or collapse space-time into a desired future in order to bring about that future's reality.” As the front-person of the incendiary jazz punk group Irreversible Entanglements, she's let it rip on a series of albums released by International Anthem & Don Giovanni Records. Last year's Protect Your Light found the band moving to the legendary Impulse! Records.   Along the way, she's released records under the Moor Mother banner, like 2021's Black Encyclopedia of the Air and 2022's Jazz Codes. Her latest is The Great Bailout, a record that functions at times like a sonic horror movie, while also possessing tremendous passages of beauty. Joined by guests like Lonnie Holley, Kyle Kidd, and Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty—past Transmissions guest Angel Bat Dawid delivers an absolutely breathtaking clarinet solo out ‘South Sea”—the album finds Moor Mother transmuting jazz, noise, rock, folk, gospel, classical music—melting down genres in a poetic churn. Moor Mother plays history and time like a science fiction story, bending temporal moments in a psychedelic flurry. This conversation flows in similar way. Join us to jump through timelines, ponder the Mandela Effect, and untangle histories with Moor Mother on Transmissions. This week on Transmissions, author, producer, archivist, and musician Pat Thomas. In the late '80s, he helped take the Paisley Underground overground with his label Heyday Records. Later, he helped bring out reissues by artists like Judee Sill, Sandy Bull, PiL, and more. And as if all that wasn't enough, he's the author of a number of essential counterculture histories, including 2012's Listen, Whitey! The Sights & Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975, 2017's Did It! Jerry Rubin: An American Revolutionary, and most recently, 2023's Material Wealth: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg. As you'll hear at the top of this episode, he was also the first guest we ever asked to be on Transmissions, only host Jason P. Woodbury hadn't quite got the hang of properly recording interviews. While that ill-fated talk was lost to time, this one isn't. Tune in for more on Ginsberg, the forthcoming Judee Sill documentary Lost Angel, and much more on this all new episode of Transmissions. Video animation by: Big Flowers Intro/Outro beat by: BLOODBLIXING The Plug (0:21). The Interview (3:14). "I'ma keep it real with you, it's the things you can't undo/The past, the black Rubik's cube" "Payback always inexact but I be squinting over measuring spoons" For most artists, lyrics like this would universally be regarded as their all-time best moments. But for artists like billy woods though… lyrics like this are a dime a dozen… they're literally just Verse 2 off of a song called "Hangman". The praise being thrown the way of NY-based rapper, label head of Backwoodz Studioz, and 1/2 of Armand Hammer… are plentiful, and growing in their fervor. After a string of releases that involved high-profile names such as Moor Mother and The Alchemist in late 2020 / early 2021, billy woods rode this surging wave of acclaim surrounding his music, and delivered two legacy-defining works back to back in 2022. This put the finishing touches on what is, in my humble opinion, the greatest 5-year run in hip-hop history. From 2018 onward, we got Paraffin, Hiding Places, Terror Management, Shrines, BRASS, Haram, Aethiopes, WHT LBL, and finally, Church. And if that wasn't enough, his Backwoodz Studioz camp has added to the flurry of incredible forward-thinking art during this time period, through the emergence of E L U C I D, ShrapKnel, AKAI SOLO, SKECH185, and more. Yet here we are, in May of 2023… and billy woods has done it again. Teaming up with Kenny Segal for a second time, woods has released his latest masterpiece, Maps... and he's here today on the show, to talk about his experience creating this record, his writing style and the frequent themes found in his work, Armand Hammer, the legacy of Backwoodz, and so much more! If you're familiar with me and this show so far, you know how I feel about woods. You know I had to make the most of my opportunity speaking with the GOAT. You won't wanna miss this... Staying grounded amidst growing acclaim (4:52). The concept of ‘survivor's guilt' as it relates to woods' career and life in general (9:41). The legacy of Backwoodz Studioz (16:18). Working with E L U C I D as Armand Hammer (19:50). New Armand Hammer album later in 2023 (24:49). woods' writing process and a breakdown of “No Hard Feelings” (25:46). The key ideas underpinning the creation of Aethiopes (33:10). Love and relationships in woods' music (47:44). woods' mind state creating Maps (53:13). How Maps differs from Hiding Places (59:34). Working with Kenny Segal (1:01:48). Breakdown of the ending to Maps, and how fatherhood has impacted woods' music (1:19:42). Upcoming work to expect from woods and Backwoodz Studioz (1:30:07). Nappy Nina - "Prayer Posture (feat. JusMoni)" from the 2023 album Mourning Due on LucidHaus. On her latest LP Mourning Due, Nappy Nina, as she puts it, "considers grief a currency and questions who is owed what." The Oakland-born/Brooklyn-based artist delivers vulnerable lyrics in her distinctive rapid-fire style, like a conversation with a friend who's had too many cups of coffee.  Mourning Due features a plethora of guests, including Moor Mother, Mavi, lojii, maassai, Cavalier, Stas Thee Boss, and on today's Song of the Day, JusMoni. The track is produced by Nina's frequent collaborator, Nelson Bandela. "Prayer Posture" explores the uncertainty of life. As Nina raps "Shit won't last on some quarter notes / I may laugh but I'm hoarding hope and reading my homies' horoscopes," JusMoni coos in a following line, "I feel like the worlds on fire / none of us know how to swim." It's a relatable emotion, that resonates throughout the whole reflective album.  Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

before typing this out i sat for a whole five minutes in total silence. it was an accident. i didn’t mean to do it. but i’m realizing i don’t do that enough these days. and that maybe i should do it for longer sometimes. i’m in my bedroom and no one else is home right now. i can hear some quiet bird sounds from outside. i know the highway is only a few hundred feet away but i can’t hear it. there’s a low hum from something. probably the fan in the bathroom? the half bath doesn’t have a window so keeping the fan on in there helps keep it from getting too stuffy. the refrigerator makes sound but it’s mostly easy to tune out. i wonder if my lamp is making a sound right now. i just heard a motorcycle for a second. and now it’s gone.the heater just came on. in 15 seconds the fan will kick in and in another 20 second it’ll reach my bedroom. sound waves move through air. the heat moves through air to my body. i baste in it so my fingers can defrost and so i can finish this message to you. and then i’ll silence my fingers for five minutes.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Kate Davis “Daisy” Trophy03:14 Little Angry “Green Mountain” A Cup of Tea06:51 ratbath “the devil” cold golden boxes09:01 Chris Weisman “Yeah You” Romantics10:22 Friendship “You Might Already Know” Dreamin’14:02 Fern Mayo “Goddess Under Exclusions” Week of Charm17:53 Moor Mother “Passing Of Time” Analog Fluids Of Sonic Black Holes22:05 Ganser “Motivational Speaking” You Must Be New Here26:22 False Advertising “Reading it Wrong” Brainfreeze30:30 Sharks’ Teeth “Face the Grove” Broken Trust in Satan32:44 Romantic States “Mike’s Property” Ballerina36:28 Sarchasm “Deadname” Beach Blanket Bummer Pop39:43 James Kochalka Superstar “Tape Hiss” Eggs40:56 Mono Lisa “Comment Party” Vision Engineering44:22 Joy Cleaner “Bad Advice” You’re So Jaded47:17 Parlor Walls “Spinning Gold” Lunchbox / Spinning Gold50:18 Rachael Dadd “Palaeontologist” FLUX54:38 Yawzea “Slaw” Zoning Demos57:06 Shutups “Almost Won The Lotto” Every Day I’m Less Zen60:10 Dead Little Penny “Out Of Body Experience” Urge Surfing64:01 Squarehead “Maybe” High Time67:46 WOOLWORM “Dogman” Awe69:45 LACKER “HEAVENS” TWO-FACED GAG71:44 thanks for coming “clue” the back of my knee74:29 22 Halo “Big Fire” 22 Halo

This was one of the best years in music in recent memory. A lot of great albums didn't make the cut, which is kind of insane considering there are 100 albums listed here. And what a 100 they are. Dance bangers from across Africa, ambient bedroom projects, a ton of hip-hop, wild free jazz, midi-infused pipe organs, fiery hardcore punk, modular synths for days, ear-shattering electronics, the smoothest desert blues, a guy rummaging around in a box for an hour, and so much more. After the 1973 ruling on Roe, we saw grassroots activists doing clinic defense in the face of violent right wing protests that included assassination of abortion providers and clinic bombings. Now as we're looking at a time where Roe could be overturned, we're going to be talking over the next couple of episodes about what's next for direct action and mutual aid at the end of Roe vs Wade. This past week, demonstrations at the homes of Supreme Court justices led to ruling class and liberal denouncements of protests. The Senate immediately passed a resolution to give extra security to justices (there is no gridlock in protecting the ruling class). In our latest episode, Scott talks with Hope with Shutdown DC (@ShutDown_DC). Shutdown DC has been organizing actions at the Supreme Court, at the homes of Supreme Court justices and supporting the neighbors of these justices who have led regular actions at the homes for a long time. They also discussed the impact of the overturning of Roe, the future of direct action once it's happened and what's next in the coming weeks and months on this issue. Hope is a public health student in Washington, DC. Her areas of study include pregnancy, parenting and family planning as well as understanding and combating health misinformation and disinformation. She is originally from Southern Ohio and has been involved in defending abortion access since 2015. Hope loves skill building, training and storytelling and supports movements for climate justice, racial justice, healthcare access and of course, abortion rights as a communications team member, art builder and street medic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Outro// "End of My Bloodline (Remix) by the Screaming Females with Moor Mother and Sammus Links// National Abortion Funds: https://abortionfunds.org/ DC Abortion Fund: https://abortionfunds.org/ Shutdown DC: https://www.shutdowndc.org/ The Nation: F*&k Civility! Fetish Bones by Moor Mother delivers a powerful message via a sonically abrasive backdrop. Labelled by the artist herself as Black Girl Blues, Project Housing Bop or Slaveship Punk, it's an album that demands the listener's full attention. However, was it enough to hold Sadia Asmat's attention?
