WARNING! All ye who put your ears toward this episode should know that it is the final installment of Third Gear Scratch, which appropriately features one of my closest friends and bandmates, Mr Chris Metcalf of our band, The Life and Times. But before that Chris had done much wood-shedding with crazy great bands like Stella Link , SImple Lines and Lafayette. The latter one here Lafayette has in fact reformed since Chris has returned to KC after an almost 10 year run in Chicago, and has recently made a new record with Paul Malinowski, Shiner bassist that is due for release. We recount our time together in TLAT through 5 records and 3 more EPs and so many live shows and tours with bands like Russian Circles, Mono, Pelican, Murder By Death, Appleseed Cast, Sparta, Nueva Vulcano, Magnetic Morning and so many more. It's a fantastic way to close out this podcast that I've been so greatful to host and get to meet so many hugely talented artists who've inspired me and Chris is among the most inspiring. There's new Life and Times in the pipeline, so pour one out for Third Gear Scratch podcast but don't weep for me or us. We'll continue to make music as long as our bodies will let us. Thank you all so much for the support and for your ears and for all my amazing guests. ONWARD and Keep on making stuff. All the love!

In the eighth episode of Season 10: Dealer's Choice, Kyle is joined for one-on-one conversation with musician David Sanders to discuss the comedic duality of parody as it both fondly appreciates its influences while also intentionally subverting them into mockery as we turn to Neil Simon and Robert Moore's skewering of the tropes and convolutions of the classic, novelistic murder mystery in Murder by Death (1976).
Welcome to our penultimate “What's So Funny?” episode; this week we've got a Neil Simon-penned (or more likely typewritered) little number, the spiritual sequel, sort of, to a movie both Mike and I really enjoy, “Murder By Death,” another Neil Simon creation. This one focuses more on one genre: the hard-boiled detective movie, more specifically, … Continue reading "Episode 276 – The Cheap Detective (1978)"

Before there were flames on the side of Madeline Kahn's face in Clue, Peter Sellers was doing full-on yellowface in the Robert Moore's whodunit? Murder By Death -- and we talked to singer, dancer, actor, and RuPaul's Drag Race icon Peppermint all about it! Set up as a send up of the "old dark house" genre, the film had an incredible cast including the aforementioned Sellers in yellowface; the OG Obi-Wan , Alec Guinness; queen Maggie Smith; Columbo -- I mean, Peter Falk, the Bride of Frankenstein Elsa Lanchester; Eileen Brennan, who also starred in Clue as well as literary legend Truman Capote and James Cromwell in his first feature role! It's a stacked cast -- and the movie is super-duper fun -- but the way they lean into the yellowface of it all makes it problematic, obviously. The movie also handles its female characters very interestingly and the real Asian who stars in the movie, Richard Narita, deserves some sort of award for having to act opposite Sellers' yellowface. There is also some queerness that manages to find its way in there as well as bizarre representation of people with disabilities. Murder By Death is wild and Peppermint and Dino had a grand ol' time unpacking all of it! == Peppermint Instagram: @Peppermint247 Twitter: @Peppermint247 Dino-Ray Ramos (@dinoray on Twitter and Instagram) serves as host and producer of Problematic Fave. CW: This discussion on One Tree Hill S3E17, Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them, features themes of gun violence and grief. Please take care while listening. In the aftermath of the school shooting, the students of Tree Hill High grapple with the stages of grief (Or do they? This episode's structure is v. messy!). Brooke (Sophia Bush) is feeling insecure about Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Peyton (Hilarie Burton Morgan), while not having a clue about the Leyton kiss in the library. Meanwhile, Rachel (Danneel Ackles) confesses to Mouth (Lee Norris) that she was the one who opened the time capsule. And Lucas and Karen (Moira Kelly) grieve over Keith's (Craig Sheffer) death and Lucas grapples with the decision to go to Jimmy's (Colin Fickes) funeral. Not all is grim though because Nathan (James Lafferty) and Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) decide to move back in together and Brooke moves in with Peyton! Our chat on this episode includes: The episode's namesake, the Murder By Death album, Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them Connections to Brittany Ashley's podcast Don't Tell The Babysitter Mom's Dead and the stages of grief, courtesy of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross' On Death and Dying The weird framing of this episode around the stages of grief. Is this supposed to be about Keith's death, Jimmy's death, or both? And would this episode be better if it dealt with the statement of how everyone grieves in their own way and there is no invalid way to grieve? Peyton and Lucas' conversation in the library. Is it a little mean? Why would you make a joke about a kiss when you have a history like Leyton's!? Whether Naley is too sappy or too adorable Mouth's weird portrayal of being considered as at the bottom of the totem pole…when he has SO MANY friends from various social circles. Plus, Lee Norris is not an unattractive guy. The downsides of toxic positivity A lot of talk about beds for some reason (Gen Z listeners, send us the proper emoji in response to our question we ask about flat sheets) How this episode aired 10 days (!) after the episode of Grey's Anatomy, featuring The Fray's How To Save A Life. Note from Pepper: This episode is special for me. J Robbins is my favorite producer and I never in a million years thought I would get the chance to have a conversation with him. Yay! Robbins began his career as a bassist for Government Issue, and has also led five of his own bands: Jawbox, Rollkicker Laydown, Burning Airlines, Channels, and Office of Future Plans. He was a touring bassist for Scream and played bass on the debut 7" from Jack Potential, which was issued by DeSoto Records in 1993. More recently he played bass in Report Suspicious Activity with Vic Bondi, which released two albums on Alternative Tentacles Records. In 2011, Robbins, along with Kerosene 454's drummer and fellow Channels bandmate Darren Zentek, bassist Brooks Harlan, and guitarist/cellist Gordon Withers, released an EP under the name Office of Future Plans. The band, who had been playing since 2009 and released an album on Dischord Records in November 2011, but as of October 2016, they are not together anymore. In May 31, 2019, J. Robbins released his first solo album, Un-Becoming. Robbins is also a successful producer and engineer for bands such as Ponytail, Clutch (and side project The Bakerton Group), Jets to Brazil, Hey Mercedes, Shiner, Mock Orange, The Pauses, The Life and Times, Miranda Sound, Time Spent Driving, Faraquet, The Dismemberment Plan, The Monorchid, The Promise Ring, Dwindle, Pilot to Gunner, Paint It Black, None More Black, Jawbreaker, Discount, Against Me!, Goodbye Soundscape, Modern Life is War, Stapleton, Murder By Death, mewithoutYou, Black Cross (hardcore), Lemuria, Caustic Casanova, The Sword, Debate (from Sao Paulo, Brazil), Coliseum, Hammer No More the Fingers, Small Brown Bike, Broadcaster, Noyo Mathis and Nakatomi Plaza. This is Vagrant Records: 25 Years On The Streets, where we tell the oral history of the label by the artists, fans, and insiders. In this episode, we will tell the story of Balance And Composure & Murder By Death featuring interviews with Jon Simmons & Adam Turla. Hosted by Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids. Produced by Jesse Cannon. Executive Produced by Fred Feldman & Andrew Ellis
Adam Turla is the guitarist, lead singer, and founding member of Murder By Death, a five-piece band from Louisville, Kentucky. They have a unique sound that's somewhere between folk, rock, and spooky western. Even more unique is their cult-like following that has supported them for the last 20 years. In this episode, we're talking about how Murder By Death has built such a loyal following. We talk about the early days on tour, how they accidentally got lumped in with the Emo movement, why they use Kickstarter, and how Gratitude has allowed them to keep this band going now, 20 years later. In this week's very nuanced Book and Film Globe Week in Review podcast, editor Neal Pollack and Canadian correspondent Jamie Mason examine the Joe Rogan controversy. You see, crime writer Don Winslow responded to The Rock issuing a statement of support for Rogan. Winslow pointed out that Rogan has a history of using the N-Word. Then Twitter pointed out that Winslow has a history of using the N-Word. Neal and Jamie both conclude that censorship is bad and we should ban no speech, whether people deploy it artistically or not. And then the conversation turns to Canadian politics, in a first for the BFG podcast. Apparently, there's a lot of liberal intolerance for opposing views in Canada. We stand on guard for there. Then following a charming musical interlude, Sara Stewart and Stephen Garrett stop by the ol' conversation barn to offer up their takes, along with Neal, on this year's Oscar nominations. Sara laments the lack of female directors nominated, despite the fact that Jane Campion is probably going to win. Neal laments ‘The Power of the Dog' in general. Stephen remains somewhat upbeat about the whole affair and defends the nomination of ‘Don't Look Up'. But mostly, Sara just finds it disappointing that ‘Barb and Star Go To Vista del Mar' has eluded the Academy for yet another year.Stephen sticks around to talk to Neal about ‘Death on the Nile,' which he really liked, particularly the origin story of Hercule Poirot's legendary mustache. Neal remains skeptical of the new version's star power, given that the old one featured Bette Davis and David Niven. Stephen points out that those actors were really long in the tooth by then and that the cast of the Kenneth Branagh version is quite a bit fresher. But they both agree that ‘Murder By Death' is the greatest whodunnit of them all. Or at least Neal does.Enjoy our marvelous show!
In 1976 a Neil Simon-scripted movie called Murder By Death was released which cleverly spoofed the detective fiction genre and featured one hell of a cast, including Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Peter Falk, David Niven, Maggie Smith and Truman Capote. Five world-famous ‘tecs accept an invitation to stay at the crazy house of the mysterious Lionel Twain and over dinner are informed that someone will be murdered! Hilarity ensues! While there may be some content which hasn't exactly aged well there are also genuine laughs to be had and joining Tyler this time round to discuss the film is Jon Morris - cartoonist, writer and one-half of the Just One More Thing podcast, which is all about Columbo and incredibly funny. You wanted it? You got it! This podcast is marked [EXPLICIT!]We know Tito from my husband's high school days… Tito very much enjoys the Dark Shadows 2012 film because he doesn't know the old show and frankly, doesn't care! He came over as my husband and I were playing dominoes. It was pretty cool!Instructions on how to differentiate real hate from “manufactured hate”. (It's actually pretty simple, fellow fans…) Then my consultation with Melissa about the “confusion” about the confusion itself. :DTito's 1960's Nostalgia is good enough for me. We begin with a “garbled” discussion between my husband, Tito and I. ^_^ Next we start with “The Kids In The Hall”, then “Clue: The Movie” (with a segue about “Murder By Death” that hopefully wasn't too long). Proceeding with “The Time Machine”, “The Golden Girls” and other cameos in The Pit narrative, a likely a too long segue explaining who Edward Mulhare played on “Knight Rider”. Then “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir”, a Prisoner cameo scene, “The Addams Family” (lots of conversation here including Charles Addams original drawings in The New Yorker) and “The Munsters”. (Bonus Points to Tito for knowing Fred Gwynne from another production!) M*A*S*H and Beetlejuice mentions. Almost neglected “Bewitched” but caught myself in time! (Some focus on Paul Lynde.)Finalizing in bringing out the “Dark Shadows” box set to place on Tito's lap. ^_^ Determining how one could ‘marathon' the whole of “Dark Shadows”. Darrin Stephens hanging-out with Roger Collins ideas… Then I wrap up with various potential scholastic pointers including:Don't focus on the negative and, dare I say it? Don't focus on the positive?Focus on the *NARRATIVE*.Themes for this show: “Katip Arzvhalim Yaz Yare Boyle” by Mogollar, “waltzinblack” by The Stranglers (a favourite band between Tito and my husband) and if one enjoys the background music on the stereo while we chatted? That was a compilation called “Beautiful Noise” by Sunday Records. BUY ‘EM ALL! *wink*

This is not a tense courtroom thriller about a hot-shot lawyer who goes on a deadly rampage after discovering he helped free a murderer. Definitely not starring Idris Elba, Sandra Bullock and Nicholas Cage.

"Get Ready for the Violence of the Lambs..." It is a fact that there are more sheep in New Zealand. This tidbit of truth makes the New Zealand-based horror-comedy BLACK SHEEP all the more delicious! Thanks to brilliant gooey, over-the-top gore and monster effects, the seemingly stupid concept of "killer sheep" becomes genuinely terrifying. Add a dryly hilarious script to balance out the bloodshed, and you've got one humdinger of a Kiwi horror-comedy! When ovinophobic Henry returns to his family's sheep farm for the first time in 15 years, little does he know that his brother Angus has been dabbling in some highly questionable genetic research on the flock. After a pair of bumbling animal rights activists break into Angus' secret lab, a mutant embryo escapes and infects the rest of the herd with a virus that turns them all from harmless herbivores into bloodthirsty murder machines. My extra special thanks to SuperScreamer Patron CHRIIS SCHAFFER for flexing her Patreon Power, suggesting this movie, saving the episode, supporting the show, and being an overall awesome person. BLACK SHEEP was written & directed by JONATHAN KING and stars OLIVER DRIVER, NATHAN MEISTER and TAMMY DAVIS. The MURDER BY DEATH episode featuring CHRYSTEN PEDDIE from KILLING YOUR DARLINGS has been postponed in light of the Atlanta shooting due to the film's anti-Asian humor. https://www.visibilityproject.org/ (The Visibility Project) is a national portrait and video collection dedicated to the queer Asian American women and transgender community.
